keeping kids learning. with the governor's announcement that schools will not be in session this year. many school districts across the bay area have been working out rolling out lesson plans to get students learning at home. getting students without internet access connected online and working to get computers to those who don't have them. >> how do we get those students connected who are disconnected when they leave our school district and we go home. so, you know, we're now looking at vendors to see how can we get hot spots and solutions at about how can we radiate the wi-fi that we have at different schools. >> that was the director of technology for the school district. his schools have handed out nearly 1,000 chrome books to students in need learnedmhe stet will be anline.

now, g yesterday.wii hotatn 4,000 chromebooks to get those students online, logged in and working. as the governor said, while the schools might be physically closed, class is still in session. that is certainly the message for all students and their parents across the bay area this morning. for now reporting live in san jose, julian glover, abc 7 news. >> thank you, julian. happening this morning, san jose mayor sam licardo will provide an update on how it is getting food to families in need. donations and volunteers are down but the need is growing. licardo and school leaders will have a map for seniors and young pe pickup restaurants. to the north bay bay area counties in santa cruz county eclipsed 2, 700 cases as we

enter the critical period in fighting the coronavirus pandemic. 69 people have died from covid-19. santa clara county remains a hot spot nearing 1,000 confirmed cases and 32 people died. san francisco surged with now the number is 434 in total. close to 400 cases in on the peninsula. mendocino is reporting four confirmed cases and lake county remains unchanged with no positive cases so far. we're plotting the case numbers on to a graph so we can see the trend. it uses data from the seven bay area counties and seven other surrounding areas. and we are still on an upward curve, so, that is definitely a challenge. there are more than 9,500 coronavirus cases across california and now the death toll has passed 200. the state added 1,000 new cases in just a 24-hour period between

tuesday and yesterday. $100 million will be distributed to california schools and child care centers and that covers the cost of school cleaning expen expenses. and starting today, savemart, lucky will dedicate special shopping hours for first responders. law enforcement, fire and medical personnel will be allowed to shop one hour before and one hour after post eed sto hours. costco will limit the number of customers it will allow into stores. only two people will be allowed to enter with each membership card and this is in response to the massive crowds that we've seen there since the outbreak. jobina? >> thank you, kumasi. good morning. more states are heeding the call to flatten the curve here as we fight the coronavirus pandemic. it looks like now 45 states are now imposing stay at home restrictions. more than 5,000 people have died with more than 200,000 infected. hospitals and health care

workers are overwhelmed. president trump says the next few weeks are going to be difficult. >> difficult days are ahead for our nation. we're going to have a couple of weeks starting pretty much now, but especially a few days from now that are going to be horrific. >> now, vice president mike pence says that he expects the worst of the pandemic will be over by memorial day. and that is two months away. dr. anthony fauci says social distancing orders will be removed when there are essentially no new cases or deaths. so, the good news here is that more than 8,500 people have successfully recovered from the virus here in the united states. everybody in los angeles is now being encouraged to wear a nonmedical mask. this is a recommendation from the city's mayor. and it comes the same day at the california department of public health announced that people are not required to wear masks, but said that they may be helpful when they're combined with other prevention measures.

volunteers from redwood city are busy sewing thousands of masks based on a kaiser-approved template and they will go to medical workers who face a critical shortage of n95 masks. sd >> within a couple days when we launched our effort, we had hundreds of volunteers signed up across the bay area and across the country to make these masks for, you know, for our health care workers. >> the cdc is reviewing its guidelines on who should wear masks. with the covid-19 pandemic hitting bay area businesses hard, some tenant rights groups are calling for a statewide rent strike next month. abc 7 news reporter has that story. >> all of our events through june canceled. >> reporter: a wedding floral deziper but all the spring weddings she was planning are now gone due to the coronavirus shelter in place order and now the rent is due. >> right now it's really a choice between making sure i

construction projects are suddenly on hold and some exceptions to the rule. but, first, though, checking in with mike from home on what the day is looking like. hi, mike. >> hi, kumasi, how are you? >> i'm well. how are you doing? >> i'm doing well, thank you very much. hey, let's get some sunshine in our forecast today because the weekend is looking wetter and wetter. good morning, everybody. you wouldn't believe it is going to be warmer this afternoon when you look at these temperatures and feel these temperatures. in san francisco we're in the mid to upper 40s with clear conditions and a little lighter breeze at the coast than we had yesterday morning, but that breeze will return as we head into the afternoon hours. in fact, it will go all the way over to the bay side. look at these temperatures in the 30s at palo alto and santa clara and pleasanton and american canyon and everybody else in the 40s with a 49 in downtown san francisco and about as mide as it gets. let's talk about the commute for those essentials driving through. 51 degrees and it's going to be pretty good all day today. we go from stars to sunshine.

about what i'd seen and what i'd done. i remember just thinking, man, the way i am right now, i don't want to live. i was discharged from the army, and i've been working with the wounded warrior project since 2007. warriors don't have to be severely wounded to be with the wounded warrior project. we do have a lot of guys that have post-traumatic stress disorder. being able to share your story, i guess it kind of helps you wrap your mind around what did happen over there. just because you've left the military doesn't mean your life is over, because when these guys are coming home, i'm kind of leading and training them, instead of for combat, i'm leading and training them to heal. and if i come away with anything from the wounded warrior project, it's them giving my life back. my name is norbie, and yes, i do suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, but i'm okay.

allowed inside. this type of setup becoming too familiar. public and event spaces once reserved for gatherings and celebrations now makeshift hospitals. this is the fourth set up by the national guard in california just this week. >> all of our airmen have made all of these beds to be prepared for when they're needed. >> reporter: you are looking at 250 beds for possible covid-19 cases that need care, but not necessarily hospitalization. empty now, but not if the surge that public health workers are so afraid of becomes reality. >> we hope that we never need this facility, but we want to be absolutely prepared because when that time comes and you need space, you want to have it. >> reporter: this place has changed almost overnight for this neighborhood. once home to the county fair, now a site for coronavirus testing. covid-19 cases and now hospital beds. changes that some residents at least on social media say they're not always aware of or comfortable with. >> we have to make sure that we

continue to be transparent. make sure that people know thatt what the event center is for is for saving lives. >> second only to santa clara and the number of covid-19 cases in the bay area. this media tour a way of being open with the public and also asking for their support. >> this is a different type of war for us and this is our generation's challenge. >> reporter: in san mateo, chris reyes for abc 7 news. a lot of construction projects around the bay area will sit unfinished for at least the next month. the new shelter in place restrictions will put a stop to commercial and residential work. brown construction is building this 193-unit affordable housing unit in bay point while trying to keep the coronavirus at bay. on tuesday, the contra costa county health department ordered a halt to all commercial and residential projects. exceptions allow certain projects to continue health care

facilities, affordable housing and public works projects and shelters, as well as temporary housing. >> it's better for us for what is essential and what is not essential. each one of these workers, yes, they want a paycheck, but if you asked any one of them, they're all trying to be as safe as possible and limit the spread of the covid-19, as well. >> but the new guidelines do mean that more people will be filing for unemployment. yeah, mike, so the construction project next to the station is still going on. i know you miss that. i have to keep you updated. >> i appreciate that. maybe we should put a time lapse camera on that so we can watch the progress or lack there of, as it should be. all right, ku am,masi, hopefullu get outside and enjoy some of the sunshine today and it's pretty sparse in san francisco and doing a great job of sheltering in place compared to what we've seen in other areas.

i want to show you the main players. an area of main pressure has broken off from the main low sitting over the pacific ocean and we still have that low moving through the islands. those two will come our way and tag team us this weekend. we'll get some light rain to moderate rain moving northwest to southeast across the bay area saturday morning into saturday afternoon. and then the stronger, more vigorous storm comes in sunday bringing us the chance of some thunderstorms and some downpours and ponding on the roadways along with hail, grapel and snow level down to 3,500 feet. we're getting closer to the events. this is a more high resolution model and you can see by the time why get into saturday late in the morning, that's when it comes in. but notice it kind of weakens as it heads to the south and falls apart and leaves us with just some light showers, or i should say some light rain into the evening hours in the south bay and that kind of dissipates overnight. in the second system, you can see it coming down and more wide spread in its shield of rain and

welcome back. let's talk about some of the temperatures today because it is fog to be a gorgeous day. just a touch breezy, especially along the coast and the bay shoreline. low to mid-60s along the coast and the bay and mid to upper 60s in our inland and that will down slope off the mountains and compress and heat a little bit more and that's why you're warmer than the rest of us. tonight we have the 30s inland and low to mid-40s around most of our other neighborhoods under a clear sky. we'll look at the weekend rain and just how chilly it is going to get. >> coming up. here's kumasi. here is a health warning from the 7 on your side. the fda is asking manufacturers to pull zantac and its prescription equivalence off shelves. there is a concern that the product could be contaminated with a possible carcinogen.
