connection as well. but we want to start with the latest developments in the coronavirus outbreak, and for that we go straight to abc's stephanie ramos. stephanie, good morning to you. >> reporter: dan, eva, good morning. another 500 people here in new york city have died in the last 48 hours due to coronavirus. while hospitals here are at their max, now, the cdc is advising everyone across the country to use those face coverings while out in public. this morning, new guidance on face masks. the cdc and president trump advising americans to wear face coverings if they need to leave home in order to stop the spread of the coronavirus. but despite the cdc's recommendation, the president says he won't do it. >> i just don't want to wear one myself. it's a recommendation. they recommend it. i'm feeling good. >> reporter: the number of deaths surging in the u.s. deadliest day yet in the covid-19 outbreak.

the death toll up by 562. now standing at nearly 3,000 with more than 100,000 people now testing positive for the virus. the state announcing it's deploying the national guard to redistribute medical equipment including ventilators from institutions that aren't currently using them. >> we could have people dying because there are no ventilators, but there are hospitals in other parts of the state that have ventilators that they're not using. >> reporter: the surge also being felt in florida where confirmed cases have gone up by 20% in one day. and in louisiana, where the governor says they'll run out of hospital beds by next week. such a surreal time. and, guys, the cdc, we want to reiterate that they are asking people to use the cloth masks instead of theed tinction.u d't wan t be usingrks surgical masks because health workers need them, but you can tie a bandana or rag around your face. stephanie, you said it, it is surreal.

got allergies or covid-19? our deborah roberts has some answers. take a look. >> reporter: for so many these days, an ordinary sneeze or cough sets off alarm bells. could it be covid-19? but, remember, in the midst of this global pandemic, it's also allergy season. experts say between 20 and 40 million americans suffer from allergies every year, and the season could go through june. this map highlighting the parts of the country that are most challenging places to live with allergies. but there are distinct differences between covid-19 and basic allergies. >> about 90% of patients with covid-19 will present with a fever. the other main differentiating factor is sneezing. sneezing is very common in allergies. it has not been reported in covid-19. >> reporter: dr. madeline shawberg says the most common wlerj symptoms are itchy eyes,

runny nose and congestion. there are four differentiating factors. >> if you're worried or unsure of your symptoms, we would recommend contacting your doctor. but the main differentiating factors again are going to be fever. we never see fever with allergies. if you have any shortness of breath, difficulty speaking, walking up and down stairs, you should prompt a call to your doctor. >> reporter: the doctor says you should also look out for body aches and excessive fatigue. >> you can think of seasonal allergies as mild and prolonged. those symptoms tend to be mild and they're going to last for awhile. covid-19 is a very acute illness. patients will start presenting with symptoms between 2 and 14 days of exposure, and then those symptoms last between 10 and 14 days. >> reporter: as for that loss of smell that so many coronavirus patients are reporting, it may be a warning sign, but this can also happen with severe allergies. for "good morning america," deborah roberts, abc news, new york.

>> that was deborah roberts. thank you to her. now to another grocery game plan. last week we showed you how to make the most of your food shopping for the ultimate mealtime experience. this morning we're focusing on the senior citizens in your life and how you can help them stock up on supplies. here with some useful information is dietician and nutritionalist maya feller. first we want to start -- >> my pleasure, good morning. >> we want to keep our seniors nourished during this time when it's not as easy for them to get groceries. what should we be focusing on? >> all right, so hydration and nourishment are incredibly important for our older population. so when you go shopping, i'm going to suggest a whole bunch of items today to try to include those in your shopping list. >> okay, so -- >> first i'll start -- >> go ahead, sorry. >> no problem. first i'm going to start with hydration, right? as we age, our ability to sense thirst may be diminished, so for our older population we want to

make sure that they have access to hydrating beverages such as plain water. here we also have herbal teas, sparkling water with no added sugars. also hydrating foods like cucumbers and berries, those are fantastic choices for our older adults. >> okay. now take us aisle by aisle starting with produce. what should we pick up in the produce aisle? >> absolutely. so we're going to think about it with regard to nutrients. i'll start with vitamin d. vitamin d is really important for bone health and also how the body absorbs calcium. items like some mushrooms, fort fantastic choice. now let's move on to like a b vitamin, folate. so folate is involved in some metabolic processes as well as cardiovascular health. avocados are fantastic and eggs, as well. now, as we move through this produce aisle, we're going to move on to these packaged goods.

items like b-12 are really, really important. again, it works with folate in metabolic health and cardiovascular health. so i would suggest something like a fortified breakfast cereal that has b-12 as well as nutritional yeast. this is one of my personal favorites, and i love to have it with popcorn. it's like a really delicious crunchy snack. >> now, we've covered a lot of the fresh food. what are some of the other packaged foods we should be looking for in those aisles? >> yeah, absolutely. iron is another mineral of significance. really important for red blood cell production. i like things like dried fruits. this is some dried mango. really delicious. dried apricots. great source of iron. also pumpkin seeds. you can use these really on that breakfast cereal in the morning and it's pretty delicious. >> i see you have a plate there. that's i'm guessing a good example of what people should be putting on their senior-friendly plate? >> that's right.

the number of people in the bay area in santa cruz county testing positive for covid-19 has topped 30 to 100. nearly 1100 cases are reported in the south bay. sonoma county is reporting five new cases, pushing their total to 105. san francisco and san mateo counties are closing in on 500

okay. you have the dynamic, hilarious duo of will smith and martin lawrence, they both star in it. it came out in january in theaters. it has an extremely high audience rating on rotten tomatoes, 96%. that's really hard to beat that. that's pretty huge. i know it came out in in theaters in january but the action comedy is still available digitally. you can get it video on demand or buy it on itunes, prime video so you can still have your chance. and also if you're not familiar with this franchise, what are you doing? but you need to see the aptly titled "bad boys 1" and "bad boys 2" to prep you for this action-packed movie. the next movie i want to recommend if you need a good laugh -- >> sounds -- >> yes, go ahead, whit. >> me. give us the other recommendation. >> okay, the other recommendation i was going to say because we all need a good laugh at this point is "impractical jokers," the movie. it's available digitally and features the hilarious true comedy tv quartet. they're absolutely amazing. we have celebrity cameos.
