ynow your health, your safety. this is abc7 news. >> i own that and i have a responsibility as your governor to do better. >> a pledge today by the governor who said he's disappointed in part of the state's response to the coronavirus pandemic and blames himself. hello, thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. we'll hear more from the governor in just a moment but first, let's begin with the latest headlines. there are more than 278,000 confirmed covid-19 cases across the u.s. and more than 7100 people have died. here in california, officials say more than 12,000 people tested positive for

covid-19. there are 265 coronavirus deaths in the state. >> and 11th staff member tested positive at san francisco's laguna honda hospital and increases the total to 14. the governor said california delivered more than 41 million n-95 masks to health care providers statewide. now, governor newsom announced today that labs across the state are beginning to catch up with the enormous backlog of unprocessed covid-19 tests. the state among the worst in the nation with 59,000 people waiting for their test results. >> 13,000 are waiting for results, so we have substantially reduced that backlog. a lot of that had to do with the commercial labs stepping up and we congratulate them for their good work. >> newsom ams announced a new task force to help ramp up testing in california. he said that stanford has developed a blood test for

covid-19. newsom also announced a new web site where people can post medical supplies that can be donated or sold to support california's response to the virus. governor newsom issued an p sellers from increasing prices on more than 10% on consumer goods and medical as well as emergency supplies. the order will remain in place for five months. they can charge vierolators wita misdemeanor. here's where the cases stand in the bay area. 88 people died from the coronavirus there, nearly 3500 confirmed cases. that's 286 more cases than we had last night. santa clara county leaves tds ty with more than 1,148 and contra costa jumped by 94 cases since yesterday. we're also tracking the number of cases to the north. mendocino county reports at least four confirmed cases, lake cunty remains unchanged with no

reported cases. we are learning about acts of kindness this weekend across the bay area. people are stepping up to help ease suffering and need as our world struggles to deal with this health crisis. abc7 news reporter cornell barnard has the story of two local efforts today that highlight the power and importance of humanki kindness. cornell? >> reporter: dion, kindness is something we all need in the bay area and we saw a lot of that today from students to ppe for health care workers to an amazing grocery store worker giving back to loyal customers. >> i got water, so it's a ye >> btyacksoner rune shoprite grocery shop, where she found lots of produce available and water. the most amazing part, it was totally free. >> i think this is a blessing. blessing to help those that need

president and congress to create a uniform policy, so not just for certain banks, but for all banks and deferment until this pandemic is over. >> david canapa announced the mortgage relief resolution this morning. the last thing they need is for the homelessness issue to spike. if passed, the resolution would apply to both residential and commercial mortgage payments. president trump said he's considering a second coronavirus task force focused on reopening the country's economy. abc7 news reporter devin dwyer with more details by the white house coronavirus task force. >> reporter: as the coronavirus death toll continues to climb, president trump and the white house task force briefing the nation on saturday afternoon. >> this will be probably the toughest week between this week and next week, and there will be a lot of death unfortunately. >> reporter: new cdc guidelines now recommend all americans wear

non-medical face coverings if they need to leave their homes. >> medical masks would be better, okay, but we know there's a national shortage, so these cloth face coverings may be the next best thing. >> reporter: the cdc also continuing to recommend regular hand washing and social distancing to help stop the spread of covid-19. the call for face coverings comes as health care workers are demanding more protective gear. saying they're unprotected as they fight on the front lines. >> we as nurses cannot do this on our own. we can't fight for the safety of our patients on our own. we can't fight for the safety of our community on our own. we need the community. >> reporter: as state leaders complain about bidding wars over medical equipment, president trump facing questions about the national stockpile. >> we've got nothing at first and then last week, we got the first distributions of anything to anywhere, but it's still a small percentage and i continue to push. >> reporter: the president said the states should have been more

prepared. >> many of the states were totally unprepared for this, so we had to go into the federal stockpile, but we're not an ordering clerk. they have to have it for themselves. >> reporter: new york's governor andrew cuomo said the javits center will act as the main federal assistance location. the white house agreeing to make it a covid-19 positive facility. >> the federal government will staff that and the federal government will equip that. that is a big deal because that 2500 bed facility will relieve a lot of pressure on the down state system. >> reporter: devin dwyer, abc7 news, washington. coming up on abc7 news at 5:00, as many face the struggles of unemployment. two essential businesses are ramping up hiring right now. and more big changes to your grocery store visits. we'll tell you about some of the new rules in effect today at major retailers. and i'm meteorologist drew tuma. a cloudy start out there.

new developments out of miami. two passengers died aboard the coral princess. the ship with some bay area residents on board docked in miami this morning after it was turned away at port everglades. five crew and seven passengers have tested positive for coronavirus. two critically ill patients rushed off the ship and taken to the hospital. passengers well enough to fly are expected to begin disembarking tomorrow. those still recovering will remain on board until medically cleared by ship's doctors. we also have an update tonight on the grand princess that had been in san francisco bay. the on-board quarantine is ending. princess has permission to resume sailing. they will be on board when they head out to the pacific. princess said it will perform routine maritime operations for several days before returning to san francisco to take on

supplies. crew members will keep social distancing and wear protective gear and also work on sanitizing the ship. one grand princess grew membcre died at a san francisco hospital. during a time when many are looking for work after losing their jobs, two companies that remained open are looking to hire nationwide. ace hardware and its locally owned retailers hope to hire 30,000 new employees. hardware stores are considered essential businesses. integral senior living and solstice senior living also hiring. they operate three senior living communities in the bay area. happening today, walmart has begun limiting the number of customers in its stores. the chain now using one entrance for store and customers will be allowed in one at a time and counted on a one person out, one person in basis. stores will now allow no more than 5 customers for each 1,000 square feet. target is also limiting customers starting today with additional store entrance waiting areas. costco made similar changes that

began yesterday, while safeway asking shoppers to wait their turn through the aisles with one-way signs inside its stores. people are staying at home across the country as nearly everything shuts down but just about everyone has to brave the trip to the grocery store. diane masicedo with how we can protect ourselves. >> reporter: we can't avoid the trip to the grocery store. how do you stay safe while shopping? dr. bazia said bring your own bag. >> the bag you bring in, one less thing. >> reporter: wearing something to cover your face, which falls in line with new recommendations from the cdc. another tip, leave the family at home and your phone in your pocket. >> keep it down to you in the grocery store or designate one family member to do so. our phones, we are on them all the time, but they are a vector

weather moving through right now. zoom on in to where this front is, pretty much over the heart of the bay area, fallen light showers over the city, san mateo but the front is moving to the south. right now in the south bay, we're just dealing with mostly cloudy skies but we'll see this rain make its way into san jose around 7:00 p.m. later on this evening. the wider picture will show you this storm we're trackig moving into northern california as we speak. you can see another line of cloud cover offshore. that's another cold front that's going to move through here tomorrow and more rain for our sunday. right now though, temperature-wise, depending what you're seeing, you're either cool or you're warm right now. we're at 64 in palo alto. and rain cooled in the city. 58 in oakland. 55 in san ramone. 54, the current temperature in half-moon bay. overnight, in and out of the

showers. with the cloud cover overhead and a mild southerly breeze. numbers pretty much on either side of 50 degrees overnight tonight. not too chilly for this time of the year. on the storm impact scale, it is a level one system we have over the next 24 hours. light to moderate showers. we will find some downpours, especially tomorrow morning with gusty winds and there is the chance tomorrow afternoon of an isolated thundershower popping up. if one does, we may see some hail. future weather, let's walk you through it. later on this evening, 8:30 p.m. you notice the showers, scattered in nature. and then early in the morning on sunday, this is when our next front begins to move onshore, another round of rain enhancing. 8:00 and 9:00 a.m. in the morning, that's where we see the showers. the scattered downpours with yellow and orange on your screen. and we'll be in and out of the rain throughout much of the morning tomorrow. as we head into the afternoon, we'll see the front move through and by the evening, we'll begin the drying out process, some of us, especially in the north bay
