she is expected to recover. washington state is returning more than 400 ventilators to the national stockpile. officials say the machines could be better used in states facing larger outbreaks. and boston's mayor today recommended a curfew for bostonian, saying city residents should stay inside their homes between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. starting tomorrow. >> a man from south san francisco who was on board the coral princess cruise ship now docked in miami has died of the coronavirus. his daughter is now worried about her mother, who was also on the ship and has symptoms. abc7 news reporter cornell bernard spoke with the couple's daughter, and cornell, this is heartbreaking. >> eric, it really is. three people have now died on board that coronavirus-stricken cruise ship, including wilson maa. his wife now showing symptoms. her daughter trying to get her medical attention. and we just learned it appears that will happen. >> anything anyone can do. i'm asking for help here.

>> julie maa spoke to us from her home in new york, making an emotional plea for help. >> helping my mom. i have the try to save her. >> julie's mom is now showing symptoms of coronavirus. she is a passenger on board the coral princess, docked in miami. >> we have people telling us that three ambulances showed up, took -- potentially took other people and my mom still on the ship. i understand there is other people, there is other priorities, i just can't lose another parent today. >> sadly, her dad, 71-year-old wilson maa, died yesterday, after contracting coronavirus. julie says he died at a miami hospital after waiting four hours to be transferred off the ship. >> i don't know who makes the decision. everybody says it's not my fault. >> the maas from south san francisco were on their dream cruise vacation which started before the pandemic began. julie now begging anyone for help, even tweeting the mayor of miami, can you please help here?

i need to help my mom get to a hospital. >> she does have underlying conditions. so it does make me more worried. and this is just a replay of what happened to my da rched ou cruises several times, but they only told us this, it is our understanding that mrs. maa is high priority to be transferred to a local hospital. julie maa fears the time is running out. >> i just want my mom to be safe and get the medical care that she needs. > we do have an update. julie maa texted me within the hour, says her mom is off the ship, now awaiting care at a miami hospital. she says, yes, that is good news, but the situation still very critical, still very tense. we do know that five crewmembers, seven passengers have tested positive for covid-19 on board that cruise ship. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> still a long way to go. cornell, thank you. we are tracking the number of all coronavirus cases in the

bay area where 90 people have now died that is one more than yesterday. and there are nearly 3700 confirmed cases across these ten counties. santa clara county leads the bay area in confirmed cases with 1,207. to the north, lake county is now confirming its first case of covid-19 while mendocino county has four cases two. have since recovered. santa clara has settled its first coronavirus patients at the convention center. the center is serving as one of the first active field respite center. the site was converted and outfitted with bed supplies and medical supplies by the national guard. it was developed to serve people infected with coronavirus, but who have less severe symptoms. >> current capacity seems to be normalized within our hospital system today. but if for some reason we do surge up, they'll have the ability to transfer low acutac e

patients to this site where they can then carry out their recovery. >> the convention center has the capacity to serve up to 250 people. this will enable area hospitals to maintain their capacity to treat patients requiring hospitalization. san francisco's palace of fine arts may be used as a temporary homeless shelter, an idea some marina district residents may oppose. supervisor katherine stephanie sent her constituents a letter detailing the city's plan. it calls for housing 162 people inside a vacant hall at the landmark. recreation and park department head phil ginsburg said it is one of many facilities that is taking on a new role during the pandemic. >> all of our facilities have been made available to help us respond to this emergency, not just the palace, but all of our recreation centers, our emergency child care operations. we've got food distribution points. >> one marina resident says he is urging his neighbors to join him in taking legal action

against the city's plan. stephanie says the first people to come to the palace of fine arts possibly as soon as the end of the week. the u.s. navy captain who was fired after superiors detai outbreak aboard a warship has tested positive for covid-19. close friends of captain brett crozier said today he began showing symptoms on thursday. his letter details failures to provide what's necessary to curtail the outbreak. his bosses say they lost confidence in his ability to lead. the letter was leaked to the media. there are now 155 confirmed cases of the virus among sail owners the aircraft carrier. crozier is a native of santa rosa. medical military personnel are on their way to new york to help deal with the growing coronavirus crisis in that case. zachary kiesch brings us the latest from new york. >> military medical personnel are being deployed to new york as the coronavirus crisis deepens across the state. >> we will be sendin up over a

thousand medical profesionals today, tomorrow and the next day. we decided a few hundred of those would be deployed in new york city hospitals. >> governor cuomo says new york could be reaching the apex as the daily rate of deaths dropped for the first time, but also stressed there are still challenges ahead. >> so we have to adjust that patient load among all of the hospitals, which is a daily exercise, and it's very, very difficult. we're running short on supplies all across the board. >> in neighboring new jersey, cases topping nearly 35,000. the governor there saying it's now lost more people to covid-19 than it did during the 9/11 attacks. >> please let that sink in for a moment. >> the white house coronavirus task force is urging everyone in areas like colorado, pennsylvania, and the nation's capital to heed to warnings and stay home. >> this is the moment to not be going to the grocery store, not be going to the pharmacy, but doing everything you can to keep your family and your friends safe. and that means everybody doing

stanford undergraduate students start spring quarter tomorrow, all online and petit university leaders to lower the cost since they can't take advantage of in-person teaching or research labs, but the tuition won't be changing. the uc and csu systems are reportedly following suit. however. that will give refunds for housing and dining since students are no longer living on campus.

a south san francisco startup is looking to use its network of drones to deliver medical supplies and drugs during the pandemic lockdown. zip-line says their drones are ready to help deliver prescription drugs. their unmanned drones are already doing these deliveries, flying units of blood and protective gear to hospital and clinics in rwanda and ghana. now they want to do that right here in the u.s. >> the saa has the emergency powers necessary to kind of green light operations and get this -- bring this to the u.s. to save lives in the next few weeks. >> the faa says it has been inundated in recent weeks with requests from companies like zip-line, but the agency is concerned about issues, including drones running into each other and possibly hurting somebody on the ground. an east bay couple is mobilizing friends and contacts to provide food and money for people in need. they saw a news report on friday that shodonint th the number for food.

♪ come on let your colors burst ♪ >> you are looking at the first the bay area children's heater in oakland launched the event this morning. behind the beats is the dj and dad who normally spends the magic music at the families in person baby raves. since this month's in-person event was canceled, the theater company says it decided to offer a variation so that families can share the joy of music and dance together in their own homes. well, with millions of us working from home, the demand for many tech gadgets is surging, and that means shortages are emerging and that means prices are going up when people search online for a variety of items.

all of the sudden web cams and laptop docks have become hot items as people transform dining room tables into desks. san franciscans have found a way to share and keep their distance. residents are crowd sourcing sour dough starter. you'll find it pinned to trees or telephone poles around the city, all to help people make their own bread. a few weeks ago it might have seemed a little risky to take something left by a strange owner a pole, but now it's a way to help. and if you can't find sour dough starter on a tree near you, there is actually a google map with some location. >> so it does grow on trees. >> ah-ha. celebrities have been taking to social media to spread messages of self-care and health. supermodel naomi campbell is doing her part, tweeting a video about proper hand washing techniques. >> make sure you go in the top and under the nails because they carry the germs. >> well, the online campaign she is joining is called the safe hands challenge. many are doing it to promote

healthy hygiene.ws eve daytn e wee to the virus. here is one benefit to the statewide stay-at-home order, clean air in los angeles. this is the third straight week with reduced traffic because people are hunkering down at home. air quality agency says there are lower levels of dust, soot, and ozone which create all that smog. scientists are looking at the data to see if there is a link between deserted freeways and better air. officials say the recent cool wet weather is also having a positive impact on air quality. >> air quality should have been pretty darn good here in parts of the bay area. if you stepped outside today, you likely took your umbrella with you. either that, or you got wet. abc7 news was in san mateo catching some spring showers. a few cars out, even fewer people. someone who has been staying at home, drew tuma social distancing with more on our forecast and if we need to keep that umbrella, drew. >> yeah, i would keep it for the next 24 ydion.

we're tracking more showers for your monday. it won't be nearly wet as it has been today and yesterday. just soaked across the region. drive doppler 7 is still tracking showers in the south bay. we'll put this into loop over the past two hours in the south bay, and you can see the intensity and the coverage of the showers is dwindling as the evening wears on. so we'll start to dry out in a lot of spots. look right now. live doppler 7 showing you around mt. hamilton. see that white your screen? that's snow. dusting on the peaks not out of the question. stormy skies. some breaks of sunshine in the north bay and in the city right now. but we're still going to hang on to a lot of that cloud cover overnight tonight. here is the reason why we're seeing the rain. live doppler 7 along with satellite. we had a cold frontre ofowsse responsible for pushing it through is about to move through northern california tomorrow, and that will supply us with the additional chance of showers on

our monday. it's a whe they should be for april. 53 in the city. 51 in san jose. 54 in concord. 53 in santa rosa. and it will be chilly overnight tonight, especially in lake county and mendocino county. a frost advisory and a freeze warning going into effect early tomorrow morning. and what that means, we do expect subfreezing temperatures in these locations over the next 12 hours. so tonight it's a mainly cloudy night. we will get a brief break from the intense wet weather we've been dealing with. so we'll see a lot of 40s on the board around the bay shoreline. 30s in our coolest spots in the north bay. so the storm impact scale tonight and especially tomorrow. it's a level 1 light system with light to moderate showers. we'll find pockets of downpours here and there, and likely find a dusting of snow on the highest peaks like mount hamilton. by 8:00 p.m. tonight, you can see some showers focused in the south bay. there is that temporary lull we have overnight tonight. so first thing tomorrow morning,

it's cool and it's cloudy, and then as the day wears on, you can see by the late morning into the early afternoon, we're tracking more showers moving in from the south. so we'll track those scattered showers, those downpours through monday evening as well. once monday evening wraps up, we'll start to see this front get out of here and the storminess will wear down. but highs tomorrow again. it's a cool day with that limited sunshine. really hard to heat us up in the afternoon. so 55 in city. 57 in oakland. 5 in san jose. and about 57 the high in oakland. we still have a winter storm warning in effect for the sierra. this has been a great late-season snowstorm there. that continues through tomorrow morning. an additional 6 to 12 inches of snow is very likely on the 1 to 2 feet we have already seen. here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. scattered showers tomorrow. a very slight chance on tuesday of a shower along our coastline. otherwise, we'll bright up our skies as passover begins wednesday evening. thursday and good friday we're warming up.

and for easter weekend saturday and sunday, no rain in sight with sunshine and mild temperatures. now abc7 sports with chris alvarez. >> the sports world continues to be on hold as we wait for a new normal. last month the pga championship set to be at harding park here in san francisco was postponed. but good news. we may have a new date to look forward to. according to a golf week report, the pga championship is now set to be scheduled august 6th through the 9th. this isn't official, but it is proposed in the report. at harding park, it would be golf's first major of the year. however, yesterday, gavin newsom, our governor expressed concern for large crowds in our state into the summer that would make these early august dates very hopeful. the masters were set to begin this week. they're tentatively planned for the week of november 9th. espn is reporting that the nba and espn are working on televised horse competition that would involve several high profile players. the competition would involve
