routes on sunday schedules and santa clara vta has limited bus service and light rail is not operated. and no trains operating on weekends. the death toll from the coronavirus here in the bay area is now at 90. one more than yesterday. the most recent fatality was reported in marin county. nearly 3700 cases are now confirmed across ten counties. santa clara county has the most with more than 1200 infections. for our viewers in lake and mendocino counties we're keeping track of cases there, and lake county had the first case of coronavirus, the patient had been exposed while on a job outside the county, and mendocino county is reporting four confirmed cases. santa clara has accepted its first coronavirus patients at the city's convention center. the center is serving as one of california's first active field hospitals. the site was converted and outfitted with beds, supplies and medical supplies by the national guard. >> current capacity seems to be normalized within our hospital

system today. but if for some reason we do surge up, they will have the ability to transfer low acute patients to this side, where they can then carry out their recovery. >> the convention center has the capacity to serve up to 250 people and will enable hospitals to maintain their capacity to treat patients who are more seriously ill. what was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime for a south sn francisco couple has turned into a family tragedy. 71-year-old wilson ma died overnight after contracting coronavirus on board the coral princess cruise ship which is now docked in miami. his wife is showing symptoms. late tonight, she was brought off the ship and taken to a miami area hospital. the couple's daughter spoke to us earlier today from new york. >> she has underlying conditions so it makes me more woerried an if this is just a replay of what happened to my dad, my dad

started with oxygen to keep him comfortable and within four hours they needed to put him on a ventilator. >> the couple set sail on their dream cruise vacation which started before the states began issuing shelter in place orders. three people on board the cruise line ver now died. contra costa county says a patient at the orinda care center has died. the county told the abc 7 news i-team reporter dan noys that the elderly resident had already been in hospice. 27 residents at the care center have tested positive and 18 others are waiting for test results to come back. officials believe the outbreak began with five people, three staff members and two residents and now efforts are to stop the spread and those employees who tested positive are now isolating at home. a number of other important coronavirus headlines impacting the bay area. in almeda county, the superior court has announced it will remain closed until may 4th and possibly longer than that. criminal trial dates have been

extended by 60 days. the situation at laguna honda hospital in san francisco is getting worse with 14 confirmed cases of the coronavirus there. 11 are among staff who looked after patient, and three are among residents. and benicia is cracking down on people who are gathering at city-owned parking lots and violating social distancing orders. those lots are now closed. a 4-year-old tiger at the bronx zoo in new york city is america's first coronavirus infection discovered in an animal. the malaya tiger named nadia is believed to have been infected by an asymptomatic zoo keeper. six other tigers and lions at the zoo have fallen ill, suffering from a dry cough and loss of appetite and expected to recover. many have asked though, how did a tryinger g, tiger get a coronavirus test when other humans have not been able to and veterinarians say the tests are different and you cannot send human samples to the veterinary lab and you cannot send animal tests to the human laborer tos

so there is no competition for testing between these very different situations. and tonight a bay area wildlife preserve is taking extra precautions in light of the tiger's covid-19 case in new york. safari west in santa rosa is closed due to the shelter orders but starting tomorrow will require keepers working with animals to wear masks. abc's jr stone has details. >> reporter: all animal keepers will be wearing these at safari west in santa rosa in less than 24 hours. cloth marches with filters inside of them. >> we have already pulled our keepers aside, and let them know that they're going to be able to deal with the changes. >> reporter: safari west doesn't have tigers like the bronx zoo. the wildlife preserve has nearly 1,000 other animals. >> hi, norma. >> definitely our primates and our carnivores, so we have cheetahs, hyenas, lots of different species that

potentially could be exposed. >> nicky smith has spent 14 years at safari west, and says those in the animal world are well aware of what is called zoo-notic deed, those spread from humans to animals and vice-versa which includes flu types and infections among other things. >> it is something that we actually train for. >> and it may look like just another day feeding the giraffes, but they have sprayed this area down, all of the handles right here, and the light switches, in an attempt to be extra cautious. they're also using gloves when feeding, sanitizer for handles and doors when entering and exiting habitats, using foot bath stations when going into or coming out of those areas. >> so we are taking every possible precaution. >> all in an effort to avoid the spread of a virus like covid-19. in santa rosa, jr stone, abc news. officials with the bronx zoo say there is no evidence that

cruise ship sailing under the golden gate. it is not leaving just yet. anchored off hunter's point for weeks. it is conducting routine operations and will come back to the port of san francisco this week to take on supply, and where it goes next is not clear. more than 060 crew members were released from a two-week quarantine this weekend. dozens of passengers and crew fell ill from the coronavirus after taking this cruise. many died. san francisco's palace of fine arts may be used as a temporary homeless shelter. an idea some marina district residents may oppose. supervisor katherine steafani sent her constituents a letter with the plan, calling for housing 162 people at the exhibit hall in the landmark. it is one of many facilities taking on a new role during the pandemic. >> all of our facilities have been made available, to help us respond to this emergency, not

different than illnesses you've had in the past? >> yes. >> or not really? >> yes, i will tell you it did, because i felt very tired. i mean i was sleeping 13 hours a night. and then during the day, i would sleep for five hours. >> when she was awake, joy was incredibly hungry. and equally determined to get well. while she felt horrible, she never had to be admitted to the hospital with the severe symptoms that so many coronavirus patients have faced. >> when you found out it was in fact, coronavirus, covid-19, you weren't scared particularly? >> no, i just wasn't, because i honestly, at that point, which was now 22 days ago, it was all just kind of getting going, and so i just, i didn't want to know a lot. which sounds funny, but yet, it kept me, you know, from not being frightened. >> calm. >> calm. yeah. my goal was to get better. >> and thankfully, she did.

here she is taking a socially distanced walk. grateful and feeling better by the day. >> in san ramon. dan ashley, abc 7 news. >> glad to hear she's recovered. drew tuma has been checking the weather forecast for us. >> yes, and eric, we had a pretty wet weekend around here. a couple of cities had over an inch of rain the past two days. and tomorrow, we're tracking more showers moving through. live doppler 7 right now showing just a couple of sprinkles in the east foothills near san jose. otherwise, those cities are getting a break from the rain overnight tonight. look at the rainfall totals we had over the past two days. ben lomond and the santa cruz mountains, more than four inches. even san jose and the south bay got soaked. especially today. close to an inch of rain. that is almost a month's worth of april rainfall in the south bay in two days. san anselmo, .90. hayward, close to an inch.

oakland and san francisco, about two-thirds to half of an inch. live doppler 7 along with the satellite showing you the front, it has now pushed through, that brought the rain earlier today, but you look off the coast, and you can see that koi clockwise circulation, that will move onshore and bring us the next chance of showers. the good news it doesn't look to be as wet tomorrow as the past weekend. temperatures chloe, it will be a chilly night. down to the 40s in the north bay. 42 right now in cloverdale. 48 in novato. 48 san mateo. 50 the current temperature in hayward. we have frost advisories and freeze warnings going into effect early tomorrow morning for lake county and mendocino county so it will be a cold start to the day with sub-freezing temperatures expected in those towns. so overnight tonight, it is a mostly cloudy night, again, getting a break from a lot of the rain right now, and the temperatures will drop into the 30s, to low 40s.

and for our starting temperatures tomorrow. storm impact scale tomorrow, it is still a level one light storm, with scattered showers, and we do have the chance in the afternoon, of a thunderstorm, popping up. and we'll also see, likely a dusting of snow on our highest peaks, like mount hamilton. we've seen these types of storms before this season. future weather 7:00 a.m. tomorrow morning a lot of cloud cover, most cities are dry. but that changes as we head into the afternoon, and by about noon, you can see the showers moving into the south bay, again, there is that chance around mount hamilton of a dusting of snow, and as the day wears on, the showers kind of rotate north, so in the north bay, we would expect that rain to last probably about to 4:00, 5:00 in the evening before the system pushes out here monday night. so tomorrow, it is another cool day. temperatures stuck in the mid 50s. so below average for this time of the year. and 55 in the city, and 57 in oakland, and 55 in san jose. still have a winter storm warning in effect for the sierra until tomorrow morning. we have already seen one to two feet of snow and add some more

good evening, i'm eric thomas. and tonight's headline, the death toll from the coronavirus here in the bay area now stands at 90, that's one more than yesterday. the most recent fatality was reported in marin county. nearly 3700 cases have now been confirmed across these ten counties. santa clara county has the most, with more than 1200 infections. big reductions in service are on the way for san francisco's muni by the middle of the week. muni plans to only offer service on 17 of its 68 lines by the middle of the week. the system officials are still working out details. large numbers of muni operators are not coming to work due to safety concerns. and the south san francisco man has died after a dream vacation turned into a nightmare. 71-year-old wilson ma contracted covid-19 on the coral princess cruise ship. he died at a hospital in miami overnight. his wife is now being treated at a hospital in florida. tonight, new york's governor still says his state is in desperate need of crucial medical equipment and the mayor of new york city says they need

spain is also reporting more than 800 deaths in one day, a slight decrease for the second day in a row. but the country has now overtaken italy in total cases, with more than 124,000. the u.s. navy captain who was fired after he sent a letter to his superiors, detailing an outbreak aboard a war ship, has tested positive for covid-19. close friends of captain brett said he showed symptoms on thursday. the letter detailed the failure of providing necessary resource during the outbreak on the roosevelt. the letter was leaked to the media. he is a native of santa rosa. members of one charge were outraged they were locked out of palm sunday services because of social distancing rules being imposed in the sfrl valley. pastor john duncan greeted the

virtual baby rave for hospital families. bay area children's hospital in oakland launched it behind the beat, is the zj and dad, who normally spins the music, the musical magic at the theater company's in person baby rave. and since this month's event was canceled the theater company decided to offer a variation so families can enjoy music and dnce together in their own homes. an east bay couple is mobilizing friends and contacts to provide food and money for those people in need. they saw a news report on friday that showed the long lines at the monument crisis center in concord. the center had more than triple the number of people who usually line up for food. marilyn and mark weiss decided they had to do something. over the weekend, the couple collected an suv full of food and $3,000 in cash to help. >> there's people who live here on social security that are handing over a couple of cans or a bottle of jam. and i would say to people, find something you can do.
