the head of sfmta admits it is dpoeg to be a mess. good morning on this monday, april 6th. hopefully we're not a mess today. >> it's a monday. but i believe in all of us. it's good to see you, friends, in the boxes. everybody has their tea. mike, i see you have your cup, too. >> got my cup of coffee this morning. yeah. it's cold already. so, i got to get in there and freshen it up. yeah, let's talk about what is going on weather wise. remain cold outside, too. that's why i went with a coffee this morning instead of energy drink. storm impact scale a one with thunderstorms possible and that means hail, lightning, dangerous and snow level down to 3,000 feet. we have light rain moving through the south bay here on live doppler 7 and showers, what at one point were thunderstorms

encroaching at us from the south, that is the way the storms move today from south to north throughout most of the day. here's a look at the exploratorium where it is just cloudy and quiet. temperatures in the mid 30s to mid-40s at 7:00. as the rain gets heavier this afternoon, temperatures will steady if not fall a little bit. upper 40s to mid-50s and same thing at 7:00. we have nicer weather if you're tired of the rain coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. back to reggie. the man in charge of muni is telling its riders unless you have to ride its service, please don't board a bus. a lot of changes coming over the next couple days. amy hollyfield is live this morning for us. amy? >> hi, reggie. a look behind me. this station here is closed and caution tape blocking the gates there and they have station agents there and signs saying the station is closed. muni service is expected to be a mess and unreliable. they are reconfiguring their

service. they are cutting service but trying to make sure they cover the busy travel patterns of those who are still riding. the plan is to go from 68 lines down to 17 lines. so, big cuts coming. officials say they have to do this because so many of their employees won't be coming into work. they are in the vulnerable population or they are caring for someone and they are concerned about their safety. >> we're expecting between 30 and 40% of our workforce to not be able to show up to work in this coming week. and in order to be able to maintain essential service for essential workers delivering nurses to the hospitals and cooks and custodial workers to office buildings, we're going to have to concentrate our remaining service on our highest ridership lines. >> the advice from muni is to find another way to get around, if at all possible. they hope to iron it out today

and start the new reduced service tomorrow with a full service rollout planned for wednesday. they're asking for your patience and also asking for you to use another mode of transportation, if you can. and leave the space on muni for those who absolutely have to have it. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> amy, thanks for the update. 90 people here in the bay area have already died of covid-19 and there are nearly 3,700 cases in our area, the most still in santa clara county with more than 1,200 people infected there. a field center at the santa clara convention center has accepted its first patients. it has the capacity to serve up to 250 people. it's reserved for people with less acute coronavirus symptoms. alameda superior courts will not reopen until at least may 4th and extende criminal trials by 60 days. contra costa county says a

patient at the arinda care center has died. told dan noyes the held the eld resident was already in hospice. seven others tested positive and 18 others are still waiting for results. officials believe the outbreak started with five people, three staff members and two residents. now efforts are focused on preventing any future spread. the three facility employees who also tested positive are now isolating at home. if you do need to go outside, it is recommended that you wear a face mask that covers your nose and your mouth. today santa clara county officials are expected to give the public more information about this. jobina fortson has more from the live desk. good morning, jobina. >> good morning, kumasi. you can watch this briefing life this morning. it will be broadcast on facebook live and will feature the county's supervisors, as well. experts are warning that these face coverings are not a substitution at all for sheltering in place, hand washing and social distancing.

they do provide a layer of protection if you have to leave your home. dr. jennifer ashton talked about whether kids should be wearing them, too. >> so the cdc recommends not putting these masks on toddlers under the age of 2, but we do think that children can be infected, just not show symptoms and transmit the virus. ifthey're old enough to wear a little bandanna or a scarf, that might be a good idea. >> dr. ashton answers more questions from viewers coming up on "gma" at 7:00 right after "abc 7 mornings." that news conference with the santa clara county officials will be at 10:00 a.m. and to stream it on facebook, you just need to go to their page scc public health. kumasi. >> thanks, jobina. a new round of noontime updates including what the state is doing to secure thousands of new beds. over the weekend, governor newsom announced a new state task force to set up five to seven testing hubs to address

the state's testing shortfalls. also a new website for people to donate medical supplies at covid-19supplies.ca.gov. this morning 1,000 medical experts are making their way to new york state which is feeling overwhelmed by this crisis. this weekend it surpassed more than 4,000 deaths from the virus. also today desperately needed protective masks, gowns are arriving in the u.s. on three planes and going to be given out to states by the federal government. but this morning one chicago nurse is joining the list of other health care workers who quit calling the risk too great. >> i'd rather be without pay for a couple weeks and have to look for another job than possibly lose my life or my family members. >> we've also seen other nurses who are choosing to live separately from their families for the time being. others are leaving town entirely to go help fight the virus in separate u.s. hot spots right on the front lines.

cupertino and los gatos right now with the light rain. temperatures down in the south bay 42 to 46 degrees also. cooler other areas where the cloud cover is not quite as thick like in the tri-valley and mid to upper 30s in the north bay valleys. here's a look at what is going to happen today. your activity planner. i know you're getting stir crazy after not being able to go outside and today is not a great day either because of the showers and thunderstorms and the threat of lightning. which mean physics if you hear , you need to stay inside until after the last clap of thunder. the least area to get wet until the afternoon hours, temperatures in the upper 50s. east bay where just about any time today we have a chance of wet weather and barely make it into the low 50s. we'll make it into the mid-50s in san francisco. but, again, just about any time today we have a chance of wet weather. we know it's wet down in the south bay and slick streets there. let's find out about the rest. >> thank you, mike.

flights a day leaving from laguardia airport. only three from jfk. this time last year, american had 170 daily departures from laguardia and 80 from jfk. other airlines like united and jetblue deeply cut new york city service because of the virus. a 4-year-old tiger at the bronx zoo in new york city is america's first known coronavirus infection discovered in an animal. this is a tiger named nadia believed to have been infected by an asymptomatic zookeeper. six other lions and tigers are sick with a dry cough and loss of appetite. the animals are expected to recover and many are asking how did a tiger get a coronavirus test when many people can't. the bronx zoo vet said the tests are different. he says you can't send human samples to the vet lab and you can't send animal tests to the human lab. so there is no competition for testing between these two very different situations.

now, because of all this happening in new york, a bay area wildlife preserve is taking extra precautions. safari west in santa rosa is closed because of shelter orders but starting today it will require its zookeepers to wear masks. the preserve doesn't have tigers like what you see at the bronx zoo, but it does have nearly 1,000 other animals that could potentially be exposed to anything humans can contract. >> we're taking every possible precaution that we can so that we don't get our animals sick or get any of our staff members sick. and any of our staff members that are showing any cold symptoms, we're asking that they stay home for 14 days just to be on the safe side. >> they're also using gloves when feeding, sanitizing and also making sure the doors are clean when entering and exiting habitats and using a foot bath when coming and going out of those areas. i don't think a lot of us are thinking about zoo animals right now and interesting to see that we have this first case in the

so. freezing cold up in the north bay, especially lake and mendocino counties and keep everything protected through 8:00 in the morning and here's a look at what is going on through our exploratorium. 48 degrees right now and showers today. thunderstorms also. they will taper tomorrow afternoon and then we've got a quieter pattern and medium range models say no more rain after today and tomorrow. two low areas of low pressure and the best chance along the peninsula coast into the south bay and trying to run up the bay on both sides. the east bay and the peninsula. so, expect slick conditions to continue to develop from that south to north trajectory throughout the day as you can see. and it gets kind of heavy. some yellows and oranges in there and that is the threat of thunderstorms with some downpours ponding on the roadways possible and some hail. you can see as we head towards 10:00 tonight, that all goes away. overnight pretty quiet and

doing well. are you feeling much better? >> i am feeling fantastic. i'm so grateful right now. that i got through it. >> what joy hughes of san ramon got through last month was 16 days of covid-19 misery. flu-like symptoms, bronchitis, off the charts coughing and constant exhaustion. >> joy returned from texas for a business meeting on the 11th. two days later, believe it or not, friday the 13th, she started feeling sick. >> i was really sick. >> was it a sickness that felt different than illnesses you had in the past or not really? >> i tell you, it did. i felt very tired. i mean, i was sleeping 13 hours a night. and then during the day, i would sleep for five hours. >> reporter: when she was awake, joy was incredibly hungry and equally determined to get well. while she felt horrible, she never had to be admitted to the hospital with the severe symptoms that so many coronavirus patients have faced.

boulevard getting wet. temperatures from freezing cold 32 in santa rosa to 46 in san jose. kumasi. >> thanks, mike. the field hospital at the santa clara convention center will open its doors to more patients after taking its first yesterday. julian glover is live there with more on what we can expect today. hi, julian. >> good morning, kumasi. over the last hour or so we saw a number of doctors and nurses show up to the convention center to start their shift. this makeshift field hospital is up and running and they already accepted their first coronavirus cases. one of the many temporary sites that will be allowing the state to take in more patients as they prepare for this surge of coronavirus cases. now, specifically, the patients who have tested positive for coronavirus but do not need intensive care, those are the folks who will be treated here. we know more serious patients will be treated in area hospitals still. now, the center is stocked with beds and medical supplies by the

national guard. >> the hospitals are doing fine at this moment. as far as i last saw, they were doing fine. but some of these patients just don't have a place to go to recover that is safe or isolated from other family members or other members of the public. >> so, this is a location where they can then continue that treatment. so, again, we do want to stress this facility is not accepting any walk-in patients. this is just for the less vulnerable coronavirus positive patients to finish their treatment here. those more serious cases of the 1,200 confirmed cases in santa clara county still being treated in area hospitals. reporting live in santa lara this morning, jewulian glover, c 7 news. the death toll from the coronavirus in the beay area is at 90. nearly 3,700 cases have been confirmed across these ten cases.

santa clara county has the most with more than 1,200 infections. for our viewers in lake and mendocino county, we're keeping count there. the first case in lake county the patient exposed while on the job outside of the county. mendocino county is reporting four confirmed cases. the alameda superior court will stay closed until may 4th. the closure could be longer, thoug. criminal trial dates extended by 60 days. the situation at laguna honda hospital is getting worse. it now has 14 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. 11 are staff who looked after patients and three are residents. benicia is cracking down on people who are gathering at city-owned parking lots and violating social distancing orders. those lots are now closed. jobina? good morning. at the live desk, i'm tracking the death toll here in the united states as those numbers continue to rise, more than

9,600 people have died from coronavirus here in the united states. health officials are warning the this morning that this week could be tough and be a defining week. the u.s. surgeon general said this is going to be our quote, pearl harbor moment, our 9/11 moment. but president trump has a different assessment for americans and offered a bit more of an optimistic look on the outbreak. >> but we see light at the end of the tunnel. things are happening. >> it seems to be inherently contradictory but it really isn't. what you're hearing about potential light at the end of the tunnel doesn't take away from the fact that tomorrow, the next day is going to look really bad. >> and the struggles continue for hospitals across the country. many states are in dire need of personal protective equipment. president trump says the federal government will have deployed 3,000 military and public health officials for the hardest hit states. by tomorrow he says more masks

and ventilators are on the way to those states. reggie, i'll send it over to you. >> jobina, thank you. it was supposed to be the trip of a lifetime for a south san francisco couple. instead, it's turn under to a horrible family tragedy. 71-year-old wilson maa died over the weekend after contracting coronavirus onboard the cruise ship docked in miami. his wife is now showing symptoms. she was brought off the ship last night and taken to a miami area hospital. the couple's daughter spoke with us from new york. >> she does have underlying conditions and it makes me more worried and this is just a replay of what happened to my dad. my dad they started with just oxygen just to keep him comfortable. and then within four hours, they needed to put him on a ventilator. >> the couple set sail on their dream cruise before states started issuing shelter in place orders. three people who were on that ship have now died.

and the grand princess cruise ship, the one that has been here in the bay area will spend some time off of our coast to conduct routine operations. you can see it here, it sails under the golden gate bridge yesterday after spending three weeks anchored off of hunter's point. more than 600 crew members were released from a two-week quarantine over the weekend. dozens of passengers and crew got sick from coronavirus. two passengers and a crew member died. the "grand princess" will return to the port of san francisco this week to take on supplies. in the south bay this morning, students in san jose unified will be able to pick up free meals that starts today. school buses will be visiting 33 different school sites every week day from 10:30 to 11:30 to distribute these meals. all part of the grab and go breakfast and lunch meal plan that is allowing more students to have these lunches. we also have a list of all the lcations on our website that is abc7news.com.

state of emergency in some of its regions as soon as tomorrow to help fight the coronavirus outbreak there. this news just anding coming in hours ago from shinzo abe they'll launch a stimulus package to help counter the economic impact of the pandemic for households and businesses. so far japan has more than 3,500 confirmed covid-19 cases. the order there is expected to last about a month. so, we will see how this progresses over time. i'll send it over to you, reggie. >> thanks, jobina. former vice president joe biden says the democratic national convention will happen, despite being in the midst of a coronavirus pandemic. >> well, we're going to have to do a convention. may have to do a virtual convention. i think we should be thinking about that right now. the idea of holding a convention is going to be necessary, but we may not be able to put 10,000, 20,000, 30,000 in one place and that's very possible.

>> the convention has now been pushed back to august. it was originally scheduled for mid-july. the decision to delay it came after biden suggested the date move back as the pandemic continues to keep the majority of us at home. and a heads up if you use mni for essential business. the head of mta says today in particular will be a mess. let's go to abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield live at the west portal station. amy? >> hi, reggie. good morning. this station is closed. we still do see buses coming through here. you can see this one sitting here empty, waiting for anyone to climb onboard. muni employees will be out putting up signs announcing which lines will be affected with this new reconfiguration that they're doing. muni going from 68 lines down to 17. it will be a big service change. they are still carrying about 100,000 riders a day, mostly

essential workers. but, they have to trim the service out of concern for the safety of their workers. and muni officials expect 30% to 40% of their workers to not show up for work this week. >> this is in response to the reality of our operators' lives. we have a lot of operators who are members of vulnerable populations. we also have operators who are caring for vulnerable family members. so, we've been seeing a dropoff in our operators and mechanics who are able to show up for work. >> they are expecting service to be a mess and unreliable today. the advice is to find another way if at all possible. they hope to iron it out and start the new service tomorrow with a full service rollout plan for wednesday. so they're asking for your patience and they're asking for you to leave muni to those who absolutely need it. if you could find another way to get around, please, do.

them in your freezer. >> reporter: as for the constant staple bread. >> you want to take out exactly what you need. >> those are some good tips. you can watch the full report coming up on "gma" at 7:00. now, some people in san francisco have come up with a really interesting way to share while also keeping physically distant. neighbors are crowd sourcing sourdough starter. you'll find these pinned to trees or telephone poles all around the city. the aim is to help people make their own bread. a few weeks ago, it might have seemed a little risky or just bizarre to pick up a bread starter from a pole, but now it's a way to help each other. you can find sourdough starter on a tree near you and because we do live in the year 2020, there is a google map with some of the locations so you don't have to waste your time because you're supposed to, you know, go out and do our business and go right back home. that will help you. i like this.

a spokesperson said johnson is still in charge of the government. there's a new mask decontamination system being used to help with the shortage of protective masks. the fda just gave rush approval to a system that recycles thousands of used ones every day. troops at ft. murray are filling up shipping containers with those masks and then vaporize them with hydrogen peroxide and alcohol. here's a warning, traffic may be light on our bay area highways but that doesn't mean the chp is not enforcing the law. shared this picture on facebook and shows an officer who pulled over a car. officers say they saw a spike in crashes over the weekend. now, part of that is because of the wet weather, but the other part of it is because they say people are driving too fast. the chp says wide-open lanes are, quote, not a license to speed. why are we doing too much? >> because, as you say, kumasi,
