the first health officials to sound the alarm about the coronavirus in our community, and now she says we should prepare for social distancing to be longer than any of us would like us to be. our efforts to slow the spread, she's restoring things to normal as we knew it before the coronavirus may take a while and we have to re-evaluate what that normal looks like. >> life right now is very, very different than it was at the end of the 2019, and part of our new normal and new life is living with a lot of uncertainty.

she would not comment if the new normal on the social distancing efforts would run into the fall and disrupt the upcoming school year, but she did stress our social distancing did appear to be working. >> thank you. here in the bay area we're topping 3,800 cases of coronavirus with close to 100 people who have died. statewide we now have more than 16,000 confirmed cases according to a tracker by johns hopkins, and it's a 46% increase by friday. los angeles county only saw a single digit increase in cases yesterday for the first time since march. to stay inside and not even go out to the grocery store if that's possible. espn reports major league

covid-19 cases peak over the next couple weeks, san francisco leaders say they are working to get more hospital beds in case of a surge. the sutter california pacific medical center will re-open to provide much more space. >> the site will need minor improvements before it's operational, but we anticipate opening it within the next ten days. >> the city also is postponing routine medical appointments and optional surgeries. the key is making sure not everybody gets sick at the same time. another reason why this stay-at-home order is so important. in the south bay there's not enough money to ease the monetary strain on renters in mountain view. rental assistance group community services agency already helped 76 families and could take up to $2,000 to help

in san francisco on piers 30 and 32. amy hollyfield joins us live with more. >> reporter: good morning. this site is not open to the public. san francisco's opening the site to test first responders, police officers, firefighters, health-care workers. that was also the focus of the test site in oakland but now that city is opening a second test site and is now expanding who they will test. they will now expanded that to the essential workers, like grocery store workers, restaurant employees and food bank workers and child care workers. oakland's new test site is at the kaiser convention center. it's by appointment only through designated organizations. the mayor says there's no plans at this time to open the testing to the general public. >> we still recognize that testing is a very limited commodity. we are hoping that will change any minute now. while it is still so limited, we
