as we expected. here's a look at a cloudy sky where it is 51 degrees. pretty mild this morning. mid 40s to 50s and sun and clouds with mid to upper 50s at the coast. near 60 at noon for our bay and inland neighborhoods and then mid and even a few upper 60s possible at 4:00 and a very comfortable evening mid-50s to about 60. reggie? >> mike, thank you. you know, the last thing you want right now is to have essential workers showing up to work because they feel like they can't miss their pay even if they get sick. well, now some major bay area cities are providing some relief. abc 7 news reporter julian glover is live for us in san jose. julian? >> hey, good morning, reggie. yeah, this is really another tool in the tool box to help slow the spread of the coronavirus. the idea is to give essential workers like you mentioned enough sick leave. an additional two weeks off so if they do come in contact with

the coronavirus or they have it themselves, they don't have to worry about missing a paycheck. they can stay home and they also don't have to worry about spreading the virus to any of their co-workers. this was passed in two bay area cities. san francisco and san jose yesterday. rolling out these protections to any company with 500 or more employees. this does include gig workers and goes beyond federal policy. what does it cover? anyone testing positive for covid-19. anyone with symptoms of the virus. someone taking care of a sick family member and this also includes anyone required to take care of a child while the schools remain closed during this pandemic which we learned yesterday will be through the remainder of the school year for our bay area counties. >> what we have here is an extra two weeks for health or for child care and that's where it is going to be interesting because schools are going to be closed until the end of the school year. so, that's a whole period.

the question is, doe thell? >> think ofro t gcery the janit s. hopefully this is layering them the two additional weeks of sick leave. again, this does include gig workers like uber and lyft drivers and oakland could be the third city currently considering such emergency resolutions for sick leave. reporting live here in san jose this morning, julian glover, abc 7 news. >> julian, thank you. big news from governor newsom. he has been announced to secure a deal that provides the state with enough n95 masks. he made this announcement on msnbc last night. he will by 200 million masks on a monthly basis and enough masks to send to other western states. at 11:00 this morning mayor london breed will provide an update on the city's covid-19 response and more than 4,000 people have tested positive for coronavirus in bay area and

santa cruz county. 111 people have died. santa clara county remains the hot spot with nearly 1,300 cases. now on nbc 7 news live desk update. states across the u.s. worked to fight nearly 400,000 cases of coronavirus. california is flying a surplus of 500 ventilators to states in need. as these cases continue to rise, it's putting an increased pressure on personal protective equipment and ventilators. 13 overseas flights that landed on monday seek to alleviate the short shortages but send like east coast like new york and new jersey. >> those states where it's large populations because of the enormous work they're doing to prevent expansion and spread of the virus, it's allowing resources to go to these states and these communities and these counties that need more support. >> governor gavin newsom says

hospitals here have increased their collection from, 7,500 and oregon is also sending supplies to the east coast to help those states. reggie, i'll send it back to you. only on 7, we're getting exclusive access inside a san jose hospital that is bracing for projected surge. good samaritan hospital has dedicated several floors iust for covid-19 patients. each room is equipped with a hepa filter and outside each room is a full stock of ppe. even the location of the rooms is intentional. >> specifically chose this floor and some of the higher floors in the hospital, a, helps isolate them better but gives them a nicer view of everything that is happening and that light and ability gives them a better opportunity to heal. >> good samaritan has been preparing for the possibility of a surge in cases since tspit ha coronavirus patient at the end of january. students in six bay area

counties will officially not be heading back to school this academic year. those counties are alameda, contra costa, marin, santa clara and san mateo. it was widely expected. san francisco public schools says on monday students will begin teacher led dist deaant learning. this morning, an increased worry about house pets catching coronavirus because a tiger at the bronx zoo in new york city tested positive. kate larsen spoke with the president of the california spca and here's what all pet owners should know. >> reporter: more than 60% of american households have a pet, which is dat point en it comes t his huge sample se of pets livin transmission between pets and people. >> reporter: dr. jennifer

scarlet is veterinarian and president of spca. she says the spca has not seen any cats or dogs come in exhibiting signs of coronavirus. she also cautions against putting too much stock in recent studies abroad. >> what we know is two dogs from hong kong and one cat from belgium. they have swabbed the nose and see the virus particles infected the nose. but those animals did not come down with the disease and they haven't been shown to transmit the disease. >> reporter: but those animal's owners were previously showing signs of coronavirus. exercise caution. if someone is sick in your household. >> you want to separate them and limit their interactions with pets, just as you would limit interaction with other family members in the household. if you walking your dog, probably not a good time to have it say hello to someone else. >> we have treats in our pocket. >> reporter: owner of jeffries natural pet foods. new distancing rules for people and pets at her stores. >> we're still allowing the dogs

to come in the store. do we pet them? no. >> reporter: vets agree. more research is needed on animal contraction and dr. scarlet is sure of one thing. >> no reason for anyone to give up their beloved pet. >> reporter: kate larsen, abc 7 news. the jewish holiday of passover begins tonight at sundown but the coronavirus outbreak means families will be celebrating differently this year. the celebration traditionally includes a ceremonial meal but because of social distancing, some families are changing up the tradition and the get together will either be through zoom or google hangouts. all right, take a look at this. time lapsed video shows the super pink moon lighting up the bay area. this is actually the biggest super moon of the year. i love to see it by the bridge. how beautiful. so, it reached peak illumination last night at 7:35. the next super moon is in about

a month on may 7th. so, mike you were saying, it would be brighter tonight so we can still see it tonight? >> yes, even brighter tonight. it's out there right now, kumasi, if you can get outside and there's no clouds. it sets about 6:51 and be back about an hour later tonight. it will rise at 8:43. yes, 99.7 illuminatioilluminati. about a percent and a half greater than what we're seeing right now. now, let's take a look at what's going on if you're in the east bay and the valleys. in and out of the clouds and temperatures running from about 48 in lafayette to 53 in antioch. and also in brentwood. let's look at some other neighborhoods. clouds not as prevalent in the north bay and that's why the fog is forming around santa rosa. pacifica and hayward and the warmest oakland 54. let's talk about what is fgoing

south, san jose and to lesser extent redwood city the clouds will keep you average while the rest of us a little warmer than average this afternoon. >> number seven. big changes to b.a.r.t. system wide starting today. trains will be arriving every 30 minutes. >> thank you, jobina. in the south bay an assistant couach is accused of sending pictures. they released this booking photo of the coach in san jose. police say the 34-year-old used instagram and snapchat to private message a 14 and 15-year-old girl and talk about his sexual experience. the victims contacted the school after they say the suspect sent them sexually explicit photos. day 23 of our shelter in place and i know a lot of you are wondering how are we doing here? are we flattening the curve? have we even hit the peak yet? here's a look at the total

number of cases in the bay area. this graph includes data for 14 counties in the bay area and beyond. liz takes a look at the closer projections. >> rept, - that we a on that flat curve that we've been talking about for a month or so. that's us. >> reporter: that good news comes from dr. bob watker the department of medicine. he's been chronicling the daily fight on twitter. updated projections from washington researchers about california's peak when the largest amount of patients will come through our state's hospitals. initially they projected california's peak at the end of april and now likely will be next week on april 14th. >> when you look at the peak, not only when it happens but how high it is. and just as importantly as a shift in the date is the number

of patients that they're expecting. it was about half of what they had projected a few weeks ago. >> largely in part to all of us and our early shelter in place efforts. so, what will it research outlined four key indicators to move on to phase two. one, a sustained reduction of cases for 14 days and, two, hospitals have capacity to treat patients safely and, three, that authorities are able to test everyone with symptoms and, four, they have the ability to monitor confirmed cases and trace those that are infected. but even phase two isn't a complete return to normalcy. >> we get to a new phase that is more nuanced. it's like, okay. some people can go back to work because they're immune. some people can go back to work because in that community or that state they've seen no cases. >> a lot of earlier projected peak than california. new york has a projected peak

that happened really large, really fast which has overwhelmed the health care system where in california our peak has been more gradual and slow which helped us not overburden our local hospitals. from home, liz, abc 7 news. all workers and customers at businesses that are still open have to have masks on starting fiday. this is an order from the mayor, eric garcetti. companies will have to provide the masks or reimburse employees who buy their own. if a customer does not cover their face, an essential business can refuse to serve them. everything from grocery stores to hotel and restaurants. we know a lot of you are already wearing masks and, of course, we want to see what you look like with your mask on. show us your face coverings by using the #mymask and we're seeing creativity with people designing and making their own masks. go to the website for tutorials on the proper way to make your

bay valley and north bay. most of us in the mid up toer r upper 60s. if you want to see the full moon and its brightest night when it rises about 8:43, you want to get out there before you go to bed and take a look at it. here's a look at future radar and the cloud cover and you can see just a few showers across the higher elevations of the south bay. overnight, you can see a rotation from west to east of some showers, again, trying to clip the south bay and that's just about it. rainfall amounts, if you get caught under a shower, a couple hundredths of an inch of rain at best. an accuweather forecast. wind shift and cloud cover in the afternoon tomorrow and shave a few degrees off our temperatures and then you can see friday we get back to today's levels and then we exceed those with all those extra sunshine and low to even some upper 70s as we head into next week. hope you enjoy it. >> now to abc 7 news live desk

update. despite the coronavirus outbreak, the state of wisconsin went ahead with their primary election yesterday. thousands of wisconsin voters were forced to break safety measures to cast their ballots yesterday while the state's democratic governor tried to postpone the election. republican lawmakers argued that elections are sels services. president trump deemed the democrats' request for a delay a political stunt. >> they had no problem with the election being today until i endorsed the republican candidate. >> trump also condemned mail-in ballots saying they're prone to fraud, even though he himself voted by mail in florida. a state supreme court race where a conservative incumbent was up. so, that really brought in a lot of bipartisan back and forth here. and wisconsin primary results are expected some time next week. reggie, i'll send it over to you. >> hopefully we didn't get a bunch of people sick.

okay. jobina, thank you. today's first look we're hearing from survivors of the coronavirus pandemic. here's kenneth moton. >> in this morning's "gma first look" recovery and release. a texas size send off from a woman back from the brink after heading home after ten days on a ventilator in boston. this mother of five from new york leaving the hospital and reuniting with her husband. video of coronavirus survivors a bright light during these dark times. we're seeing survivors like sharon allen who spent five days on a ventilator. the staff at this health center in shreveport celebrating when the 63-year-old grandmother was moved out of the >> i was just thanking them and praising them for the things that they had did for me. and they just seemed like they were so happy. you know, that i made it, too. >> and coming up at 7:00 a.m., a special family reunion you won't want to miss.

>> thank you, kumasi, reggie. hi, everybody. let's take a look at live doppler 7 and visibility on there 3 in santa rosa and down to one. fog forming down there. spinning off the so cal coast and pin wheeling moisture up towards us and the south bay had a shower just about a half hour ago and didn't leave much behind other than some sprinkles and that will be the area that has a chance, again. with those southerly winds, look at our temperature most of us in the 50s until you get into the north bay where we have a little bit more in the way of 40s. low 70s inland. kums sr kumasi. students and parents are waking up to a new reality. schools will be closed officially for the rest of the academic year and now school leaders have a request to make distance learning possible. amy hollyfield is live in walnut creek with more on this. amy? >> hi, kumasi, the learning is

no longer going to happen here, but officials say school is still in session and now the push is to make that happen at home. so, now they're working on getting everyone up to speed on distance learning. it has not been easy. and state officials are asking if companies or individuals could possibly donate laptop computers for students who don't have one. the state superintendent is calling this the biggest challenge schools have ever faced. >> while our school campuses are closed to students, school is not out for this school year in california. we have been working with our students through distance learning. and by distance learning i simply mean where the teacher and the student are in different locations. >> san francisco and oakland have not started distance learning yet. they are still working on getting laptops and wi-fi to all students. they are also working on

securing a deal with the union. the state says they are providing training for teachers on how to teach from a distance and then the parents, they're now trying to home school and many are also working from home. it's quite a juggle going on at home now. educators have said, be easy on yourself parents. do your best. don't beat yourself up. we are all in this together and we will all get through this together. amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. now on abc 7 news live desk upda update. >> a new development in california's fight against the coronavirus. governor newsom put together a deal to buy hundreds of millions of desperately needed n95 masks. >> the last 48 hours we have secured through a consortia of nonprofits and a manufacturer here in the state of california upwards of 200 million masks on a monthly basis.

>> he revealed the news on "the rachel maddow" show last night. california will have enough masks to meet demand. he said there may be enough to send to other states. the governor says he's distributed 41 million masks. 1 million of them have come from the federal government. back to you all. >> all right, thank you, jobina. people, unfortunately, still trying to casuh in on the high demand for masks and other items. price gouging. deputies have seen n95 masks being sold for 10 bucks apiece and hand sanitizer for $8. the tweet says anyone who is caught price gouging faces hefty fines and even prosecution. the number of confirmed covid-19 cases in the bay area and santa cruz county has now surpassed 4,000. here are the latest cases by county. santa clara county is still the hot spot with 1,300 cases increasing by 61 in the latest report. marin county reported five more

cases as did sonoma county. in the north bay, lake county reporting two cases and mendocino county has four cases. marin county is preparing for a surge of patients. it doubled the available icu beds. in san francisco, it's opened its first fieldclinic to the southeast center and limits the number of people going to the emergency room for urgent care. vta bringing back light rail service tomorrow. it was stopped for two weeks after an employee in training tested positive for coronavirus. jobina? >> thank you, kumasi. at the live desk, i'm looking at a sobering milestone in the fight against the coronavirus. the last 24 hours have been the deadliest yet in the united states. more than 700 deaths were reported in new york alone. fema records show new york city

icu beds and hospital beds are near capacity but encouraging signs of hope. rates of hospitalizations are going down. stockpiles of ventilators are on the way. another major headline, black americans are being hit disproportionately hard by the virus, dying at much higher rates compared to other americans in major cities. >> unfortunately, when you look at the predisposing conditions that lead to a bad outcome with coronavirus, the things that get people into icus that intubation and they are unfortunately pr prevalent. >> dr. anthony fauci said it is shining a bright light on a weakness in our community. senator kamala harris sent a letter to the department of health and human services asking

for the agency to collect and release data on the racial makeup of people that are getting sick and dying of the coronavirus because this is part of the problem here is that there is not data available for them to address this. president trump mentioned yesterday in the press conference, we should see those numbers in the next two to three days. reggie, i'll send it over to you now. >> jobina, thank you. in the east bay, police are checking up on calls s people out and about not following our social distancing rules. abc 7 news followed along with an officer yesterday. a park shows people out for walks, that's fine. they were social distancing. here's what's not fine. people continuing to play tennis even though they're down. they are reminded that the courts were, in fact, closed. you can see officer friendly telling them so. a new normal for police patrols that are maintaining high visibility. >> we ask that people reporting

if they can come outside and meet our officers outside their ed spaces. can avoid the and if we do have to go inside a house, we're asking our officers to wear personal protective equipment. >> the good news is, they have time to make these calls because right now they're not getting a lot of major crimes to respond to. they say volume is down 25% since the stay at home order began. now, here is a constant fear for those of us on the front lines especially doctors and nurses. they don't want to spread the virus to their kids or to their wives or husbands. now, there's an alteu alternati them. an effort to pair these people up with empty rvs. a bay area doctor has been staying at a hotel to keep his family safe, separated from his wife and young sons. that will change soon because of the facebook group rvs 4 mds.

students across the state connected in this strange age of social distancing. but, first, we check in with meteorologist mike nicco with a look at our wednesday. >> thanks for joining us this wednesdayeratures in the north bay because that allowed some fog to form and you can see the gray out towards the coast and bodega bay and back towards santa rosa where it's 40 degrees right now. temperatures in the upper 40s as you head towards vallejo. other neighborhoods where it's mostly cloudy and milder. temperatures in the upper 40s to even a few mid-50s out there like 53 around alameda and oakland. those temperatures up to 12 degrees warmer than this time yesterday. san jose where we are a few sprinkles likely. and tonight for our essential commuters, that is about it as

the clouds and the stray shower up towards us. as we head throughout today, right there in the santa cruz mountains, just a blip of green, which means a light shower. overnight, you can see another chunk of energy protating from east to west off the seeara and into the south bay, once again. as we wake up tomorrow, we'll have another chance of a stray shower in that same area and the cloud cover and little bit of a wind shift for tomorrow. we'll take a few degrees off of today's highs and we'll start to make that back as towards friday. look at this, rainfall totals if you even get a shower, less than 0.05 of rain. here's my accuweather and bump up today and drop tomorrow and we'll rebound friday and then we'll exceed average levels with low to mid-60s at the coast and mid to upper 70s as we head into the middle parts of next week. quite a stretch of dry weather and warmer than average weather. mike, thank you. have you noticed you're not getting the same number of robo
