from the south along the embarcadero where it is 51 degrees. milder this morning. 12 ee milder than this time yesterday with low 50s around 7:00. mix of sun and clouds and a stray shower across the south bay and temperatures will hit the mid to upper 50s at the coast and mid4660s at 4:00 else where and still a comfortable evening mid-50s to 60 degrees. reggie? >> thank you. relief could come to some essential workers in san francisco and san jose. leaders in both cities passed emergency measures widjaja give them paid sick leave. here's abc 7 reporter j.r. stone. >> reporter: these are essential workers busy at it in san francisco's fisherman's wharf. workers who are likely part of the 200,000 that would benefit from a public emergency leave measure that was just passed by the san francisco board of supervisors and is now on the mayor's desk. >> immediately provide two additional weeks of paid leave. >> reporter: 14 days of

emergency paid leave for anyone that works for a large company of 500 or more. it includes those who have tested positive for covid-19, have symptoms of the virus or someone who may have to take care of a family member. >> if you're a large employer, you have a greater amount of responsibility to your employees and that is a first step right now by providing those two weeks of paid public health emergency leave. >> reporter: travis dennen is an essential worker in san francisco. he is employed by work day, which already give employees incentives. he hopes the citywide ones aren't abused. >> i think it's a great thing that they're doing in san francisco and san jose. however, there's always going to be those people who will take advantage of the system. >> reporter: abc 7 news anle insider phil mater said a number of questions about this new emergency measure. >> an extra two weeks for health or for child care and that's where it is going to be interesting because schools are

going to be closed until the end of the school year. so, that's a whole period. the question is, does this cover >> rr:ll expected to sign this measure and oakland could soon be the third major bay area city to follow. j.r. stone, abc 7 news. >> and among the coronavrus headlines this morning, governor newsom announced a deal that will get california, he says, all the n95 masks that we currently need. on msnbc he made this announcement saying the state will buy 200 million masks per month. enough masks to send to other western states. also at 11:15 this morning. san francisco mayor london breed will provide an update in the city's covid-19 response. we'll bring you that later this morning. more than 4,000 people tested positive in the bay area and santa cruz county. 111 people have died. now on abc 7 news live news

update. >> as states across the country work to fight against the nearly 400,000 cases of coronavirus here in the united states, california will be flying a surplus of 500 ventilators to help states along the east coast. now, with these increases in cases, it's putting extra pressure on personal protective equipment and ventilators. 13 overseas flights that landed on monday seek to alleviate the shortages, but california will be sending ventilators to states on the east coast like new york and new jersey. >> and it's those states where there's large populations because of the enormous work that they're doing to prevent expansion and spread of the virus. it's allowing resources to go to these states and these communities and these counties that more >>overrewineatheiroll maines to

you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. we will start in the south bay with mostly cloudy conditions and that is better than the stray shower we had just a few hours ago that roamed through there. mid-40s to around 51 around santa clara warm spot. temperatures up in the north bay. you saw the least amount of cloud cover and fog around santa rosa. most of us in the upper 40s to mid-50s. definitely milder to yesterday morning. lead to a mild afternoon and go outside and remember the social spacing and also remember if you have allergies. here's a look at what is going on for the north bay. we have the fog quickly fading with a mixture of sun and clouds this afternoon and jump into the upper 60s and places in santa rosa could feel 70 degree warm. 50s through 11:00 and partly cloudy this afternoon and mid-60s for several hours and in san francisco, temperatures

mainly in the upper 50s but a few areas will hit the low to mid-60s and especially the closer you are to downtown in the financial district which probably not a lot of people down there right now. so, you'd be out there by yourself. speaking about being out there by yourself, jobina. how is the commute this morning? >> those lone riders out there, mike. is that what you were going to ask. pretty clear. a heads up to any of our essential workers passing through hercules following a crash on westbound 4 just before 80. it looks like a big rig hit the center divide. not clear on the blocking situation there. so, i will keep you updated on that if it progresses and becomes anything else. also, b.a.r.t. that's the other big news i want to get to today for everybody. big changes starting today. if you take b.a.r.t. as an essential worker, week day trains will only run every half hour. if you miss a train, you'll have to wait another 30 minutes. b.a.r.t.'s ridership has dropped

93% because the weekend service has remained unchanged. kumasi? in the south bay an assistant coach is accused of sending lewd pictures to two young girls. san jose police believe there could be more victims. police say the 34-year-old used instagram and snapkechat to private a 14 and 15-year-old girl. the victims contacted the school after they say the suspect sent them sexually explicit photos. fighting for sick leave and hazard pay. the action workers in one gig economy plan to take today. and some good news if you love a certain bay area coffee

about the coronavirus much earlier than we initially thought. just yesterday, president trump said that no one had heard of the virus until about two months ago. but according to abc news, american military and medical investigators overseas sounded the alarm in november about the contagion that at the time was sweeping through wuhan. concerns the virus could be devastated were detailed in a report. multiple sources described that report to abc news. there were also repeated briefings for people across the federal government in december and by early january they were y in the daily briefing. president trump didn't make his first public comments until late in january saying he wasn't worried about the virus and everything was under control. this morning, we do not have a response from the white house or the pentagon. >> thank you, jobina. in los angeles, all workers and customers at businesses that are still open have to wear masks starting friday. that's the order from mayorgaet.

companies will have to provide masks or employees purchase their own. this goes for everything from grocery stores to restaurants and hotels. we know a lot of you already are wearing your masks and we want to see them. show us your face coverings by using mymask abc 7. people creating and designing their own masks. you can go to the cdc website for a tutorial on how to make your own. target's delivery workers are staging a protest on the delivery platform called shipt. workers are protesting because a lack of safe guards. they are demanding $5 of hazard pay on every delivery they make. they want 14 days of paid sick leave whether that's related to coronavirus or not. they also want to be provided protective gear. organizers are asking for customers to stand in solidarity with them by boycotting the app

in the next couple of days. also phil's coffee will reopen 27 bay area stores and that starts this morning take coffee orders through the app and pick up your drink at the front door and go about your business. taking steps to limit social interactions between workers and customers. they open at 7:00 this morning and close at 2:00 this afternoon. facebook is launching a new tournament feature on its gaming platforms as part of its social distancing platforms. challenge your friends and live stream events. also part of facebook's play apart together campaign, which encourages people to socially interact through gaming. and i did a little extra work for you guys to see what kind of games we could play because i never tried this before. it looks like we have words with friends, solitaire, which kind of defeats the point, uno and i

elections are essential services. president trump deemed the democrats' request for a delay a political stunt. >> they had no problem with the election being today until i endorsed the republican candidate. >> president trump also condemned mail-in ballots saying they're prone to fraud even though he himself voted by mail in florida, wisconsin primary results are expected to come out some time next week. >> jobina, thank you. now day 23 of our bay area shelter in place and i know a lot of us are wondering, are we getting close to the peak? we're getting some answers now from dr. bob watker the share of the department of medicine and he's become a real twitter superstar. it appears california's peak will likely be next week on april 14th. initially researchers at the university of washington projected that our peak will be at the end of april. >> not only when it happens but

bay area and this is actually the biggest supermoon of the year. good morning, everyone. it is wednesday, april 8th. if you missed it last night, you still have another chance to watch it even more brightly tonight, right, mike? >> yeah, it will be 99.7% illuminated. that is the brightest it's going to be. come up about an hour later at 8:43. so, just like yesterday, clouds this morning and increasing sunshine and then clouds will increase during the overnight hours. try to get out there early in te evening. here's a look at what is going on. live doppler 7. i want to show you earlier where we had a few showers roam across the south bay. dehisreyt,thing measurable in the low still down to our south, we're on the top side of it which is still the weak side. it will be the south bay that has the best chance. temperatures when you step outside. 38 in santa rosa where it was clear until the fog formed and we have 40s for the rest of the north bay and upper 40s to

mid-50s. about 12 degrees milder this morning than it was yesterday morning. this afternoon, how about some low 60s along the coast and mid to upper 60s around the bay and upper 60s and even a few 70s in the east bay valley and north bay this afternoon. we'll take a look at the warm weekend coming up. here's jobina. >> all right, mike, i'll take it from here. this morning parents and students around the bay area are waking up to a new reality. schools will be closed for the rest of the academic year and now school leaders have a request to make distance learning possible. abc 7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live in walnut creek with more on this. >> good morning, kumasi. we felt like this was coming and this is official. you can never help but think of the seniors that will walk the halls of their high school again. school is officially closed for the rest of this school year and the state superintendent said the is this is the biggest challenge

that the school ever faced and he is calling on companies to donate laptop crs for students orege individu even in those who can't afford one so they can participate in distance learning. the state is providing training every week for teachers on how to teach kids from a distance. >> this is not easy, but our kids are worth it. and it can be done. the california department of education is providing standards and guidance. >> in antioch, high schools have distributed chrome books to their students and they're getting up and running and planning to get them out to the middle schoolers today. oakland and san francisco, they're still working on their digital home schooling plans. still trying to get laptops and wifi to the homes that don't have them. administrators in oakland are still working with the teachers union on a deal. so they don't have a date yet on when they will start the distance learning program.

this is not been as easy as you might have thought it would be. so, districts all trying to get this up and running because school is not over. they're just not coming here to the building any more. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. now on abc 7 news live news desk update. >> at the live desk. i'm looking at a new development in california's fight against the coronavirus. governor newsom says he's put together a deal to buy hundreds of millions of desperately needed n95 masks. >> in the last 48 hours we have secured through a consortia of monprofits and a manufacturer here in the state of california upwards of 200 million masks on a monthlysi >> he veal news o show last nig. newsom says california will have enough masks to meet demand. he says there may even be enough to send to other states. the governor says the state has

already distributed 41 million masks and 1 million of them have come from the federal government. back to you guys. >> thanks, jobina. people are still trying to cash in on the high demand for masks and other items. the alameda county sheriff office tweeted about price gouging. deputies seen n95 mask sold for 10 bucks apiece and hand sanitizer for $8. anyone caught price gouging faces hefty fines and even prosecution. the number of confirmed covid-19 cases in the bay area and santa cruz county has now surpassed 4,000. santa clara county is still the hot spot with nearly 1,300 cases and that is up by 61 from the latest report. marin county reported five more cases, so did sonoma county which is now at 120 cases. in the north bay, lake county is reporting two cases. mendocino county has four cases. jobina. >> thank you, ckumasi.

a sobering milestone in the coronavirus cases here in the united states. the last 24 hours have been the deadliest yet in our country. more than 700 deaths were reported in new york alone. fema reports show new york city icu beds and hospitals are near capacity but there are encouraging signs of hope. rates of hospitalizations are going down. the president says stockpiles of ventilators are on the way. another major headline here. black americans are being hit disproportionately hard by the virus. dying at much higher rates compared to other americans in major cities. >> unfortunately, when you look at the prpredisposing condition the outcome with coronavirus the things that get people into icus and require intubation and lead to death, they are unfortunately disproportionally prevalent. >> dr. anthony fauci went on to

say this issue is shining a bright light on a, quote, real weakness in our society in reference to health disparities in the community. senator kamala harris with a handful of others asking the agency to collect data and release it on the racial makeup of people that are dying and getting sick from coronavirus. if you saw the press conference with preident trump yesterday, he noted that that data should be released in the next two to three days because that is a big part of the problem here because they do not have the numbers. reggie, i'll send it over to you. >> jobina, thank you. walnut creek police are responding to your calls about people not obeying shelter in place orders or keeping businesses open that shouldn't be. abc 7 news follow along with an officer yesterday and we watched as they went through heather farms park and they show people out walking and that was fine because they were keeping apart or they were part of the same household but wasn't fine was

what they found at this tennis court. a couple people playing even though officially those courts are closed. as you can see, the officer reminds them of that. this is the new normal for police patrols who are maintaining high visibility. >> we ask that the people reporting if they can come outside and meet our officer se is outside their home so we can avoid the confined spaces or in-person contact. if we do have to go inside a house, we are asking our officers to wear personal protective equipment. >> officers are not having to respond to as many calls from the public. volume is down about 25% since the stay-at-home order began. the constant fear for doctors and nurses right now is that they'll get the virus at work and come home and spread it to their family. but now there is a way to pair these folks with rvs so they can be at home but not actually be in the home. it's a really interesting idea and a bay area doctor has been staying at a hotel after work because of this concern but now

temperatures in the low to mid-60s there to fresno and monterey and 77 in chico and that is indicative of some of the temperatures headed our way this weekend. reggie? >> mike, thank you. new this morning, mill valley police officers will resume investigating the neighborhood for a possible missing child. the department posted these photos on instagram of 40 volunteers with marin search and rescue and yesterday at about 5:00 p.m. police received a report of 4 or 5-year-old boy blonde hair and plaid shirt unattended. but early this morning, police say search efforts didn't find any missing kids and they haven't had any reports of missing kids. the last thing we want to do is to have essential workers get sick, but still feel like they have to go to work in order to get their paycheck. now, two major communities here in the bay area have decided to create an effort to make sure that that doesn't happen.

abc 7 news reporter julian glover is live for us in san jose. julian. >> hey, good morning, reggie. big relief for those essential workers still required to go to work. so, if they do get sick with the coronavirus, they are guaranteed time off in the way of two additional weeks of paid sick leave. they also don't have to worry about potentially showing up to work and spreading the virus to their co-workers. so, now, they do have that leave to be able to stay home. this was passed in san francisco and san jose yesterday rolling out these protections for any workers who are employees at a company of 500 or more employees. anyone having tested positive for coronavirus, anyone who has symptoms of the virus, someone taking care of a sick family member and this also extended protections to anyone required to take care of a child while the schools remain closed during this pandemic, which we learned

let's talk about what is going on weather wise and you can see from the golden gate bridge. we have a little bit of a breeze less than 13 miles per hour. pretty cloudy out there. best chance of a stray shower in the south bay today. clouds will come back today and little fog in the north bay and then warmer and mainly sunny this weekend. temperatures today, look at those 70s. they stick out in the east bay valleys up in the north bay little more sunshine there. most of us in the mid to upper 60s. little bit cooler at the coast with the low 60s. tonight you can see the cloud cover take overnd us mild, once again. 48 to 53 degrees. now, looking at the radar and you can see the low to our south and continue with a counterclockwise flow pushing rain up to our neighborhoods. but we're on the top side, the weak side. you can see the chance is very minimal as we head throughout the day mainly in the south bay. and they will move mainly from east to west. you can see tonight, once again, another chance of wet weather and then the cloud cover remains dominant tomorrow and that keeps our temperatures down a little bit compared to today. we'll see a spike today.
