80% of san francisco's buses are out of commission, making social distancing on board all but impossible. passover joining the covid-19 pandemic. how a digital connection is leading to what many are calling a deeper meaning. officials say six patients of this senior care facility have died from the covid virus and some family members are outraged at how it went down. >> announcer: now your health, your safety, this is abc 7 news. a cluster of coronavirus deaths at a senior care facility in the east bay. six patients are dead, dozens have the virus. >> this is happening at gateway care in hayward. abc 7 reporter j.r. stone has the latest. >> reporter: mortuary crews dressed the in full

>> something like this we should have been made aware of right away. >> reporter: his grandmother is a patient here. she doesn't have the virus but is in isolation. while pitino knew about one death, he didn't know about five additional ones until we broke that news wednesday. >> it's hard. i want to know who the hell's running the place over here because no one's told us. >> reporter: 35 patients tested positive for covid. 6 of those patients were the ones who died. gat lupe's wife is a employee of the facility who tested positive for the virus. she's okay, been in quarantine for a week. but her boss is already talking about a return that he says is not going topp why the boss told to come back to work. no way. >> reporter: neighbors say they knew something wasn't right and are now doing their best to stay

healthy. >> god help us, man. >> reporter: while 53 people from the facility are now battling covid-19, pitino's mom is holding strong covid-free. >> it's a trying time because my grandmother is up in age. she's doing well. she doesn't have a fever, just regular aches and pains an 85-year-old would have. >> i did reach out to management to get their side of the story but i have yet to hear back from them. in hayward, j.r. stone, abc 7 news. meanwhile another resident and two more staff members have tested positive for covid-19. that means at least five residents and 11 staffers now have the virus. another staff member at orinda care has tested positive as well. there are now 23 staff and 27 residents infected for a total of 50 cases at that fa icility. and an additional staffer at

laguna hospital. more than 14,000 people have died in the united states and there are more than 432,000 cases. in new york, the hardest hit state, officials tonight report the highest number of coronavirus-related deaths in a single day with 779. >> the bad news isn't just bad. the bad news is actually terrible. >> in california, more than 500 people have now died. tuesday to wednesday was one of the deadliest periods in the state so far and san francisco's mayor is cautioning people not to get complacent. s as you can see, those numbers are still going up. and we anticipate that they would be even higher, and the worst is yet to come. >> president trump meanwhile is looking forward, taking an optimistic tone. >> getting closer, you see the numbers getting much closer to getting our country back to the way it was.

>> and two major headlines tonight affecting workers on the front lines of this crisis. the cdc announced new guidance that attempts to get workers back on the job faster after being exposed. if a worker is symptom free, they can come back before 14 days. >> what cdc has done is looked at the essential work force and how to maintain that work force particularly at this time as we begin to get ready to reopen and have confidence in bringing our work forces back to work. >> the cdc director says employees should take their temperature before they go to work, wear a face mask at all times, social distance at work, and go home if they're sick. the strategic national stock pile is almost out of n95 masks, surgical masks, gowns, and other supplies. the house oversight committee

has released documents says 90% of the stock pile has been distributed to state and local governments. the remaining 10% is being held in reserve for federal workers. this allows states to come up with their own means of equipment. governor newsom pledged a billion dollars to buy 200 million masks a month. >> people with stock pile are asked to report to santa clara county under new order by the health department. county officials have a good supply now but are preparing for a supply shortage ahead. >> getting this awareness will let us know what we can source here locally so we're not as reliant on scarce state and federal supplies. >> anyone with a ventilator or a certain number of ppe including gloves, n95 masks, and surgical masks is asked to respond. an update now on coronavirus

numbers for the bay area which includes santa cruz county. in the last few hours sonoma reported increase in cases, 16 more than yesterday. the county says 52 of those infected have recovered. alameda reports 40 more cases from yesterday now at 674. three more people died in santa clara county where there have been a total of 46 deaths and 1,380 cases. farther north, today lake county reported its third case and cases are holding steady at 4 in mendocino county. three of those people infected have recovered. let's get a look at other headlines we're following. a warning against price gouging in marin county. the district attorney says she's getting complaints about it and violators could do time. a judge in the ghost ship case decided to release erik

alameda. and don't expect sports back in santa clara county until late november at the earliest. that's according to the county executive officer. the county is home to the 9ers, the sharks, and three big universities. >> in san francisco after the transit agency cut nearly all of its routes. only 17 of the city's bus lines are currently operating. abc 7 news reporter kate larson is in san francisco with the story. >> reporter: the streets may be empty, but what's left of san francisco's bus fleet is bustling. the social distancing that people are practicing at the bus stops is often undone once they get on board. these photos of people sitting side by side and standing shoulder to shoulder were taken wednesday at 4:00 p.m. on the 38. >> they're too grouded.epte sns going to maskng too much, i just get off and

walk. >> reporter: only 17 of the city's 79 bus lines are running right now which is just 20% of the city's transit lines. and with 100,000 people still riding every day, it means there just isn't enough space to social distance on the few buses that are left. director of transportation predicted problems when 40% of operators were unable to show up to work this week. >> many of our front line workers who are members of vulnerable populations or vulnerable people at home, they've increasingly needed to stay home in order to stay healthy and safe. >> still tum lynn says every san franciscan is near a stop. >> word was they were going to come up with alternatives, increase in parent transit or working with other agencies. >> abc news contributor phil mahathir points out another solution. >> like it or not, cars are

69-year-old man who was knocked unconscious. police today say they arrested a third suspect, christopher jefferson last wednesday in stockton. in the south bay the november election may be exclusively vote by mail due to coronavirus concerns. supervisors approved a plan to have the registrar of voters look into the possibility. she tells abc 7 news it wouldn't be a change for most voters. >> the march election we just had, 87% of the voters turned out cast a ballot already cast a ballot by mail. so, i feel confident most of our voters are familiar with that process. >> the registrar of voters began mailing every voter a ballot this year, so the county is in good position to go to all mail ballot election. many celebrating the jewish passover of passover -- happy passover -- are adding another

evacuated from wuhan china back in february. >> i could not imagin that would happen in the u.s. >> reporter: adjustments are being made. many temples in the bay area are providing passover kits. businesses like kay feen coe are dishing out free seder plates. >> we have the fresh baked mat sa over here. we're also doing roasted. >> reporter: for some the passover seder is not only bringing digital connections but deeper meaning. >> israelites were sheltered in place, so in some ways i feel more of a connection to that story and the connection to that hope for redemption that usually is kind of theoretical but this year feels real. >> abc 7 news. >> powerful perspective.

tonight marks the beginning of passovers. many families are celebrating in a non-traditional way. a bay area rabbi shared how to have a seder in place. worldwide more than 90,000 cruise crew members are stuck at sea because of the pandemic. some of those crew members were on board the "grand princess." in february, the ship sailed from san francisco to hawaii and back. the contamination began on a previous cruise to mexico. 19 crew members have tested positive and three people died from the virus including two passengers. the ship is heading to an undisclosed location at sea. >> we want to bring you a covid-19 survivor story tonight. you may be underestimating the seriousness of this illness. wayne freeman spoke with people you may know and they certainly tell different stories. >> even if you don't know

someone directly afflicted by covid-19 you've heard of others. john prine who died last night. tom hanks and his wife rita wilson who recovered. and british prime minister boris johnson. they're all public figures and proof that covid-19 can attack notable people. >> i underestimated how serious my illness would be. >> today a video, he is finally fever free after weeks. >> i am relatively healthy, but i've needed help for almost everything at home. >> which leads us to another class of victims, the home care gives. carmen can tell us all about it. >> i had with fatigue, very tired. >> family members became sick after vacations in new orleans last month. her husband had it the worse. he remains too weak to talk

after a week on a ventilator. carmen had been caring for him. >> you know he's getting intubate. you can't talk to him. you're at home thinking the worst because you can't talk to him, knowing that your partner is sick and we can't be by his side. and knowing that other people have died from this. >> her husband of 29 years had been relatively healthy. in three weeks, chief has lost 20 pounds. >> he's very week. he still has a lot of pain in his legs. he's having to do physical therapy just to walk again. >> carmen talked today for one purpose to, deliver a message that if you're one of those people not social distancing, take covid-19 seriously before it changes your attitude. >> we are blessed. god heard our prayers. >> in marin county, wayne

freeman, abc 7 news. california is having early success flattening the curve and experts are trying to figure out why. new york a state with a population half that of california has faired much worse than the pandemic. here's a look at a graph including data from 14 bay area and surrounding counties so you can see the shape of our curve. one senior fellow thinks it's possible coronavirus has really been in the state since the fall. victor hansen says in the fall doctors reported an early and vicious flu season. and during that same time the state was welcoming as many as 8,000 chinese visitors daily at our airports. >> something is going on that we haven't quite found out yet. when you calculate as well there were people on direct flights to san francisco and lax from wuhan, ground zero, it would be naive not to think the california population wasn't exposed. >> the case, a portion of our

population may have already had covid-19 and those folks could have helped us build up herd immunity. a stanford study is looking into this. >> stanford university has created an app to protect front line responders. it's called the first responder covid-19 guide. it connects first responders with stanford medical experts who will answer their medical questions and determine if they should be tested. stanford health care is offering priority drive through testing in san mateo to emergency workers. >> attitude for everyone on the front lines of the covid-19 battle. use the hash tag better bay area to show us how you're saying thank you and we'll share the love. >> fremont is cracking down on visitors to the city's most popular park. starting tomorrow, several parks will be closed. it's an effort to decrease drive in traffic by 6 # otomaybe as

much as 9 o% and leave the park uncrowded for neighbors. parking restrictions at other parks are being evaluated. in less than an hour, all santa cruz beaches and parks will be off limits to reduce the spread of coronavirus. the order is set to end on april 15th. >> it was a breezy day probably at the beach today. >> breezy and maybe some sun coming. sandhya patel has the forecast. >> yeah, absolutely we're going to have breezy conditions tomorrow dan and ama and plenty of sun in the holiday weekend forecast. i want to show you something positive coming out of so many of us sheltering in place. the air quality is going to be good the next few days, fewer people on the roads. and our environment is actually benefitting from this. so, thursday, friday, saturday, sunday we're looking at good air quality across the entire bay

area. as we check out live doppler 7 i want to show you this area of moisture in the central valley, keeping an eye on it because as you see from the arrows there it is going to be heading in this direction. area of low pressure spinning off the southern california coast. same storm that soaked us. getting the rain and snow heading in our direction. we're not going to get all the energy. we will see a few showers out of this as we head into tomorrow. temperatures right now, they're comfortable because of the cloud cover in the 50s for most of you. live look from our camera. we have the fog around as you look at san francisco. so, morning fog and a few showers, looking at it turning a little milder for friday and sunny and warmer for easter weekend. here's a look at the projection with that area of low pressure snding up some of the moisture, we are going to see a few showers develop around 2:00 a.m. this is not a widespread event which is why the storm impact scale is not on there. at 7:00 a.m. if you have to run

out watch out for slippery spots. going into 10:00 a.m., scattered light showers, amounts less than a 10th of an inch and 3:00 p.m. those showers begin to taper. going into the evening clouds begin to part ways. temperatures in the morning, 40s, 50s, there will be a few areas of damp roadways. so, if you do need to drive because you're an essential worker definitely be careful out there. highs for your thursday cooler than today. low to mid 60s for most of you. certainly more cloud cover and a breezy afternoon. the accuweather 7 day forecast featuring that fog is a couple of showers tomorrow. it's going to be a hit or miss situation. and then we're going mainly sunday friday after the morning fog followed by rising temperatures. easter is looking fantastic. i know we're not allowed to gather, but definitely if you're doing something just with your own family and you're in the backyard doing a little egg hunt for your children it is going to be nice weather outside.
