during in his recovery and in a statement his office said he is in, quote, extremely good spirits. as johnson recovers the government wants to make it clear that it is too soon to pull back on restrictions for public activity. they can continue to slow the spread. reggie, i'll send it over to you. >> jobina, thank you. the death toll for the coronavirus has now neared 100,000 and with more than 1.6 million confirms cases around the world. the international monetary fund said the world should be prepared for economic fallout worst since the great depression. the bay area and santa cruz county eclipsed 500 positive tests and at least 119 people have lost their lives. a group of activists, attorneys and public defenders are calling for the release of all inmates from alameda county san marita jail and 600 others

released to prevent overcrowding. civil rights activists say not releasing all could be deadly. most of the remaining inmates are dangerous. >> 98% of those individuals are in here for serious, violent crimes including homicide, sexual assault, crimes against children and other crimes of serious public concern. >> deputies say more than 50 inmates may be released by monday. alameda county district attorney released a statement on the inmates' release. this office takes very seriously the duty to balance a defenda defendant's right with public safety. governor newsom says plans to provide deep discounts on hotel rooms for workers. >> families broken apart not able to come back home. many cases sleeping in their

co-director of this clinical lab at san francisco general where she and a team have tested 500 blood samples from 80 patients who were positive for coronavirus. >> so, we basically spent the last month validating the method. if you could see the increase and rise of antibody response over time because that has not been well characterized for this virus. >> reporter: they developed coronavirus antibodies 2 to 15 days after the onset of symptoms. next week, lynch's lab will start using it on patients and employees within san francisco's public health system. >> antibodies can show if somebody has had a previos infection and this is important because we are not able to do swabs on every single individual in the population. if a health care worker has the antibodies, then they would be at decreased risk of acquiring the virus, so, they could potentially be more on the front line of fighting this. the only risk is that we don't

know for sure if antibodies, the presence of antibodies means that someone is immune. we're hopeful because that is what happens with many viruses. >> reporter: to get an antibody test, it must be ordered by a doctor. more health care systems testing later this month. lynch does not expect a reagent shortage. kate larsen, abc7 news. the nfl is planning to go ahead with the regular season in september, but if the games are played at all, fans are not planning on attending sports fao to a game without a vaccine for coronavirus. most experts say a vaccine is at least a year away. in the south bay, volunteers are providing food to people in need. many of the recipienav ve tov t of people were stretching for blocks. one of the church passers said they distributed a month's worth

you run on sunshine, you're going to be energized by this forecast. today partly sunny and more sunshine than yesterday but not much and we'll transition to drier weather today. now, cloudy tonight and a little bit of fog and a little bit cooler than this morning. and then we see the temperatures hop up into the 70s and even near 80 over the weekend. for today, still a lot of mid to upper 60s along the coast and san francisco and upper 50s to lower 60s and here is a look at tonight's temperatures and you can see how gray it is just about everywhere. temperatures in the mid 40s to low 50s around the bay and out towards the coast. here's a look at our area of low pressure. today is actually day six and it is finally getting a little motivation to move away from us and let its grip lessen on our weather. let's take a look at future radar. just mainly a cloud and wind forecast. you can see the clouds break up a little bit, but the gray never completely goes away today. wake up tomorrow morning and you can see the increase in the cloud cover, but look what happens tomorrow afternoon. outside of the coast, we see a

covid-19 positive patient has onavirus symptoms.e pat w alread earlier this week the iteam dan noyes reported on the first death and more than two dozen cases that center. officials believe the outbreak started with three infected staff members and two residents. this morning, the number of confirmed covid-19 cases in the bay area and santa cruz county now tops 4,500. three more people died yesterday, including the first person to die in berkeley. at least 119 people have now lost their lives in the pandemic here in the bay area. santa clara county remains the hot spot in our region with more than 1,400 cases. both alameda and san francisco now have more than 700 confirmed cases. a little further north, lake county now has three confirmed cases and mendocino county cases held pretty steady at four and three of those patients have recovered. starting friday californians who receive unemployment

benefits will see an extra $600 in their checks thanks to the federal stimulus package. hundreds of san francisco educators are pledging to donate part of their stimulus checks to undocumented immigrants. "the chronicle" reports the money pledged totals $100,000. help is coming for 8,600 people signed up for the california health corps. let's go to jobina fortson for some of the national headlines. >> good morning. the trump administration is pushing to reopen much of the country as early as may 1st. health economists raised concerns over this and a possible resurgence of coronavirus if we were to do this and have americans return to normal. meanwhile, president trump is now requesting another $250 billion to help small businesses, but democrats blocked that measure insisting$.

we had 0.4 and that's our only issue really with the commute today. so, let's talk about some neighborhood temperatures and the temptation to head outside today because we hit the mid 60s in the south bay after being in the 50s through 9:00. we'll get to the 60s quicker and more sunshine today than we've seen most of this week. let's go to the east bay and we're looking at temperatures in the upper 50s through 9:00. and then low to mid 50s under a partly sunny sky. and here we have san francisco where our average high is about 62. we'll be pretty close for a couple hours this afternoon. mainly upper 50s. look at that, more sunshine, though, as we head into the evening hours. and sunshine will boost our temperatures this weekend. we'll talk about the 70s and where they'll sit and even some 80s next week coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. first, get back to jobina and talk more about the bay bridge. good morning, jobina.

for the past several weeks we had some conflicting information whether we should be wearing masks or face coverings and the it's clear the answer is now yes. a new abc news poll released this morning is looking at how many americans are actually wearing them sore so they say. here are the numbers, 55% of americans who left their home in the last week say they wore a face mask or face covering while 45% said they did not. when you look at it from a partisan approach, 62% of democrats say yes while 42% of republicans say yes. still, president trump's approval for his handling of the crisis continues to drop. this week, disapproval among americans is at 55% with only 44% approving. when you look at it as far as the concern from americans. the partisan differentiation there is much less stark, i'd say. 90% of democrats polled say they are concerned. and 82% of republicans polled say they are concerned.
