here's a look back at about 2:00 this morning when some of the light to moderate showers moved through the south bay. more than a tenth of an inch in the mountains and 400 in the valley. little slippery this morning, but you can see that has moved on and all of our neighborhoods are showing pretty dry weather right now even though we have pretty cloudy conditions out there still. temperatures in the low to mid-50s through 7:00 and stay at the 50s in the coast and we in h the low 60s at noon and mid 60s at 4:00 with more sunshine than yesterday and back into the 50s. grab a coat if you're heading out this evening. we'll take a look at the warmer weather coming up. here's reggie. >> thanks, mike. easter at home. that is the new reality for so many people in the bay area this weekend. so, let's go to our reporter at home and that would be julian glover live from the south bay this morning. good morning, julian. >> hey, good morning, reggie. yes. certainly unusual in times that are far from normal. we know president trump wanted to have the shelter in place order lifted by easter sunday

should be prepared for the worst economic fallout since the great depression because of coronavirus. california now has more than 20,000 confirmed cases with more than 500 deaths. the bay area and santa cruz county eclipsed 4,500 positive tests and at least 119 people have lost their lives. a group of activists, attorneys and public defenders are calling for the release of all inmates from alameda county jail. 11 inmates have tested positive and 600 others have been released to prevent overcrowding. civil rights activists say not releasing all the inmates could be deadly. ining inmates a dangerous. for crimes inclingxuassault,ris serious public concern. >> up to 56 more low-risk inmates will be released by

monday. alameda county district attorney released a statement. this office takes very seriously the duty to balance a defendant's right with public safety. governor newsom says there are plans to provide deep discounts on hotel rooms for health care workers. >> families that have been broken apart and not able to come back home. many cases sleeping in their cars overnight. in other cases, unwilling because they've been exposed to this virus. we need to do better. >> more than 150 hotels and motels are working with the state to provide vouchers and stipens to health care workers. in the south bay, volunteers are providing food for people in need. many of the serrecipients have never had to ask for help until

it appear there's is a power outage. that means the cameras are not working on the bridge and also no lights on the toll plaza for our essential workers that are making their way there. make sure to slow down because it is very difficult to see in the area because it is so dark. once again on the other side towards treasure island there, the lights are back on as you make your way into san francisco. i will keep you posted on how this progresses throughout the morning. i'll send it to you, kumasi. >> thank you. san francisco is taking more aggressive steps to slow the spread of coronavirus. the city with the help of ucsf is ramping up efforts to trace every case and contact each patient who tests positive for coronavirus will be interviewed. if they came into contact with anyone in the proceeding days ad offered a test. any positive test will trigger isolation. kristen zee talked about this with epidemiology at ucsf. >> some of the people who are helping us going forward are medical students, the city

warm sunshine in the forecast also as we head through the weekend. welcome to friday. let's take a look at the golden gate bridge where it's pretty cloudy and calm conditions as high pressure starts to take over more control of our weather as this is a transition day. we'll see a little more sunshine and feel just a touch warmer and get back to average tonight. clouds and fog when we wake up tomorrow morning and then the sunshine, those highs, they'll be hopping up into levels above average for today. we have mid to upper 60s in most neighborhoods. out at the coast and into san francisco, upper 50s to low 60s. tonight, mid 40s in our deepest inland valleys to upper 40s to low 50s around the bay. look at all that gray out there. it will go away a little bit quicker than the last couple of days where it's hardly gone around. sorry about those bad frames in there. what i wanted to show you was the water vapor imagery to give you an idea of how low the circulation is with that low. pushed it well down into and the jet stream usually moves our storms along, but not this one.

it is pretty stubborn. let's talk about a cloud forecast that will turn into a temperature forecast. you can see by the afternoon and early evening hours, we do break out in the cloud cover especially in the east bay and north bay. overnight, you can see the marine layer clouds come back. look at tomorrow, they are etreat ba retreat back to the coast. that's why the coast never warms up as the rest of us because more of a late spring early summer pattern. keeping you in the 60s while the rest of us hit the 70s almost 80 degrees inland by tuesday. hope you enjoy it. >> gosh, it's hard to believe that we'll get close to 80, mike, thank you. now, we'll turn to our other favorite meteorologist, ginger zee. >> what is coming up on "gma" at 7:00. good morning, ginger. >> mike got to say broad, low pressure system and i think he was looking at enhanced infrared. whatever it was, i just caught the end of it and i was very

jealous. let's talk about what i will be getting into it and that is a tornado outbreak for easter sunday and the coronavirus pandemic. you know the numbers. you have been reporting them. nearly a half million cases now in the united states and new york state is one of those places where we have more victims than any other country in the world. so, new york governor andrew cuomo is going to join us live from the u.s. epicenter this morning. also, we're going to get into the new cutting edge effort to test for coronavirus antibodies. myself and so many other americans are interested in this. as simple as a our answer. who will get the test once it's out. easter sunday being two days away and a bunch of places thatt are still planning to hold services. so, these places where the authorities are refusing to close their doors, we're going to tell you how you can worship at home and stay safe and also give you some ideas about how to make the holiday as good as it can be while you're celebrating this weekend. then a message of hope.

now an abc 7 news live update. >> this morning, british prime minister boris johnson is out of the intensive care unit after being placed there for complications from coronavirus. so, he's still in the hospital, though. i want to give you these updates. johnson had been at the icu since his symptoms worsened. he had been oxyntht beid off

he is in, quote, extremely good spirits. as johnson recovers, the government there is saying it is way too soon to ease up on restrictions for the public to return to their normal life. they want to continue to slow the spread there. reggie, i'll send it over to you. so, it looks like lizzo is going to be there, the strokes and this is according to a lineup that was briefly posteded app yesteineupvampire weekend and 1975. the information was reportedly only up for a few moments and then it was snatched away. outsidelands is still set to open in august at golden gate park in san francisco. we'll see if that holds.

>> hi, kumasi. some family members want to get their loved ones out of here especially as the death toll continues to rise. yesterday officials announced a seventh death that happened here at the gateway care facility in hayward due to the coronavirus. and the number of people here who have tested positive for the virus is now at 65. some relatives told us they can't move their loved ones because they can't afford in their homes. employees showing up to do what they can to help these people are also trying to keep themselves healthy. >> we're drinking hot water every 30 minutes. contraing .ere constantly having vitamins and stuff and taking vitamins and eating oranges. so, we're trying our best. i mean, as best that we can.

>> the facility has been cited in the past for lack of nurses. experts we have consulted with said facilities with low staffing are more vulnerable during this pandemic. the county health department has sent specialized teams here to gateway to help with this crisis. reporting live in hayward, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. >> thank you, amy. in the east bay, a second covid-19 patient has died at the orinda care center. the facility's owner told us the patient was already in hospice care and never displayed coronavirus symptoms. dan noyes reported on the first death and more than two dozen cases at the center. officials believe the outbreak started with three in thmoine bay area and santa cruz county now is topping 4,500. three more deaths were reported yesterday, including the first in berkeley. at least 119 people have now lost their lives in the pandemic. santa clara county remains a hot

spot in our region with more than 1,400 cases. both alameda county and san francisco now have more than 700 confirmed cases. further north, lake county now has three confirmed cases in mendocino county cases holding steady at four. three of those patients thankfully have recovered. starting sunday californians who receive unemployment benefits will see a wbigger checchec check. an extra $600. hundreds of san francisco educators are pledging to donate a part of their stimulus checks to undocumented immigrants. pushing to reopen much of the country as early as may 1st. health experts and economists have expressed concern over this. they say with this happening, it could really push for the possible resurgeance of coronavirus, if americans return to normal too early. meanwhile, president trump isil to help small businesses, but democrats blocked that measure insisting on another $250 billion for hospitals and states. meanwhile, as we mentioned, people in california will be getting an extra $600 in unemployment benefits from the first relief package. people in other states face delays. >> how long it takes will vary by states. some systems, some state's des willbell take getting some help. the department of education is releasing $6 billion in the emergency grants to help students with their debt. and also overnight, president trump said that he does promise to help farmers, as well.

so, just around 5:30 this morning or so the lights went out at the bay bridge all the way from the toll plaza through to the center anchorage and right around treasure island is when the lights came backen o. if you can visualize for me a normal traffic day as we take a live look at the area, if that were the case, that would have meant no metering lights and no lights for anyone to see on the bridge and really causing a big mess. thankfully because we have a few commuters making their way in this morning, it didn't cause too much of a problem. chp said it is a problem and they have a bridge crew out there working on it. oakland and less traffic in oakland because of the stay at home order. mayor libby schaaf is temporarily closin miles she calls the emergency measure, quote, oakland slows streets. it provides 10% of roadway in just about every neighborhood for people to safely walk, exercise or bike inrcthose clos. and we will be right back

you're never more than seven minutes away from your accuweather forecast. this is abc7 mornings. wanted to take a look, once again, at the exploratorium because it is a little deceiving. over the bay, the clouds have dissipated. cloudy in most neighborhoods and little more sunshine as drier air moves in and temperatures getting back to average levels. this is as comfortable as the snow pack is going to get. we'll add more to it today, but that's it. we're at 65%. that's about as healthy as its going to get. rr bsehaow little bit isti spinning across southern california bringing the policy for flooding and also some heavy snow up near the grapevine. also you can see temperatures in the 60s there. if you look towards chico and sacramento, see those 70s, that is coming our way for the weekend. up in tahoe, they'll be in the 50s with no more snow.

from all over the bay area to help get us through this pandemic. a woman in the south bay is making easter special for hundreds of kids and families. mariar martinez decided to use the toys she was going to ship to her grandkids to create a scavenger hunt outside of her home. now people are showing up every day to drop off even more toys. >> i lived here ten years. i met neighbors i never even met before that live four or five houses down. and then i see neighbors while some of them wait to see the display because this is a scavenger hunt, the kids can take up to 10, 15 minutes. the other neighbors are talking to the other parents. it's just awesome to see the kids so happy. >> i love that. she says now she's planning to make the scavenger hunt an easter tradition. we invite you to join better bay area project thanks and share your gratitude for everyone on the front lines of

the covid-19. we will share the love. governor newsom is defending the loan of 500 ventilators to the national stockpile. santa clara county and other communities across the state are still trying to secure more of the medical devices. >> we thought it was the right thing to do. but i also want you to know it was the responsible thing to do. when those ventilators are used to save lives in those other states, we have the firm commitment from those states to send them back to the state of california. and why? because, again, our curve is not bending like other states. we have stretched our curve. giving us a little bit more time. but we can't just sit on assets, when we could save lives. >> the governor says california hospitals are using only a third of the ventilators they have right now. he says the stay -at-home order is slowing the spread of infections. live desk update. >> we've had conflicting informationor over the past

several weeks whether we should be wearing masks or face coverings. it's clear the answer now is yes. abc news poll new this morning, just released, is looking at how many americans say they're actually wearing.. americans say when they left their home last week, they wore a face mask or covering and 45% said they did not. when you look at it from a partisan approach, 62% of democrats said yes while 42% of republicans said yes. still, president trump's approval for his handling of the crisis continues to drop. this week, disapproval among americans is at 55% with 44% approving. the partisan divisions become less stark when you look at how many people are still concerned about coronavirus. 90% of democrats say they are concerned while 82% of republicans say they are also concerned. very clear across the board,

reggie, that people are still worried. >> yes, as they should be, really. jobina, thank you. leftover fabric from the aids memorial quilt is now being used to make masks for the homeless and others who need them right now. this is such a touching story. volunteers with the aids memorial quilt are now mobilizing and making reusable masks for staff and clients of oakland-based bay area community services. and for the people who are making these masks, it is an emotional project. >> trapped at home and you can't, you know, love people. not love them, but hold them and be near them. and it's my on n n earth, so, i decided to start sewing masks. a way to help my community and help people whether i knew them or not. >> volunteers are working in isolation to sew these masks making more than 400 in the first week. how meaningful isthat, that two

horrible epidemics that have hit our country and the world come together in this way and this is a way to protect people. >> i like to see that. >> can't think of a better way. now, we have something kind of fun to show you. a central valley family are getting creative because they have a lot of free time on their hands. >> this is my favorite story. they, like so many of us, are missing their favorite stores, specifically target and starbucks. they decided to make their own version at the house. they are in bakersfield and they built these replicas and painted them, as well. orthe stcksas a f d with some r prteon the target has a check d stocked with real snacks like chips and juice. >> it may seem a little bit extra but for me at the end of the day watching them play and enjoy it and us knowing we put it together as a family means everything to me. >> it's definitely been something to help us out mentally.

not to be negative. they were sold out of toilet paper, too. >> true. >> i didn't see any wipes either. good morning, everybody. welcome to friday. let's talk about something fun. how about the weather for the weekend. we'll start off by taking a look at the golden gate bridge where we have calm conditions right now. high pressure is starting to take over. that is going to bring us more sunshine and no more chances of rain. we do have some fog the next couple of mornings, but afternoon sunshine that will have our temperatures hopping up the scale and even above average next week. let's take a look at today. we're pretty much back to average. maybe a degree or two shy with upper 50s to low 60s into san francisco and mid to upper 60s for the rest of us. tonight, you can see the cloud a togler tomorrow morning. mid 40s to some low 50s. there's our pressure. day six watching this thing. and it's time to say, bye-bye.
