ivy odom is here. how are you doing? >> hey, y'all. i'm good. how are y'all? so, this is oven baked buttermilk french toast. it's not done on your skillet like you would typically make french toast. you bake it in the oven, which is great because you can make it the night before. all you need are eggs, buttermilk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, salt, vanilla, bread slices and lemon. if you don't have buttermilk or heavy cream, you could substitute it with half and half, and increase the lemon if you want to. >> that sounds really decadent. okay, so show us how it's done. >> it is so easy. first you need to make your eg mixture. so in this bowl, i already have four eggs whisked up. and then 1 1/2 cups of buttermilk. like i said, if you don't have buttermilk, you can substitute with half and half or whole milk. this was one cup of heavy cream.

a half cup of granulated sugar, some salt, just because you have to have salt in all of your things to make them taste good and vanilla extract. whisk that up really well. and then lemon zest, so what i like to do for lemon zest, zest your entire lemon before you do the juice. it's really important. it's so much easier to zest a whole lemon than it is to zest one that has already been one that is cut up. i can't imagine having to do this. it's slipping and sliding and then the best trick, to juice your lemon, i like to not use a juicer. i just squeeze it so my fgech t. why dirty up more dishes when you don't have to. and then after you whisk it all up, you want to slice your bread and soak it into this mixture, so i'm working off and moving everything off to the side. this is sliced french bread. if you don't have that, you could use white bread or brioche

bread. we're all trying to make substitutions right now. really, whatever you have on hand is fine. soak it in your mixture and then layer it in a 9x13 baking dish. what i love most about this recipe is you can make it ahead of time, which is awesome, so you could do this the night before. fill your sheet, put it in the fridge, cover it with plastic wrap and then preheat your oven and while your oven is preheating, let it sit out at room temperature and then go ahead and bake it. it bakes at 325 for about 30 minutes. and then tv magic, here's what it looks like when it comes out of the oven, y'all. look at this. >> it looks so good. it also looks like you'll have a lot of french toast at your house this weekend. >> oh, my gosh. so much french toast. making stuff for tv, you have to do multiples so you can have one already plated and everything, but that's okay. we're not complaining over here. we'll have one for breakfast
