lauren martinez is live in san francisco to explain. lauren. >> reporter: the mt. davidson cross is lit up in blue to show solidarity with health care workers and other essential workers, putting their lives on the line right now. for the first time in its 97-year history, the easter service held here has been cancelled. since 1923, easter sunrise service has been held at the mt. davidson cross in san francisco. for the first time, that tradition is now cancelled amid the pandemic. >> something needed to happen for easter. so, i think illuminating the cross and showing there is still hope and light was pretty important to us. >> reporter: the counsel of armenian americans purchased the cross in 1997. they wanted to light it in blue this year to show their apprec dwriegz health care workers, first responders, grocery store clerks and other essential workers.

>> they're our saviors. without them, i think we would probably be a little bit lost as far as how we would survive ourselves. >> reporter: earlier in the day we caught catherine mcgehee picking up her ham for easter sunday. last week the mcgehees celebrated a family member's birthday on zoom. tomorrow they'll watch mass online. >> we're going to make a new easter memory and look forward to next year when we can really celebrate easter together. >> a long line could be seen outside the bakery. owner jack epstein says there's three high holy days for chocolate. christmas, valentine's day and -- >> i'm fortunate enough i can let people knock on the door and help people. although i don't sell what i was selling before this craziness, i'm selling enough. so, i can't complain.

deaths in lake and mendocino counties. covid-19 restrictions are making it hard for any hospital patients to see friends and family. video chats on ipads have become the new best thing. abc 7 news reporter has more. >> it's incredibly difficult for a family that can't be with their loved ones at the bed side. >> reporter: family members can't visit patients since new orders went into effect in midmarch. one way to help lonely patients has been video chats on ipads. >> i wish i could say interactions are on an ipad just by being in a room but nothing substutds the personal connection, even when you can't touch or hug your loved one, your presence is irreplaceable. >> reporter: she's the vice chair at ucs, if. she says she's witnessed first

hand the change in patients who have been able to connect with their family via video chat. >> we had one particular gentleman who was having trouble with deleerium and being able to see his family every day, hear the voices he recognized and the faces was incredibly impactful to his care. and i'm pretty confident led to him being able to get his normal mental function back and leave the hospital yesterday. it was really tremendous. >> reporter: she says using an ipad isn't new but it's never been implemented on such a large scale. she says 100 ipads have been donated. so, now each bed has an ipad. and each floor has five to eight ipads for patient use. some medical gofundme, hoping to raise money to buy more. >> we're thinking about what are the role of ipads for family

pass in concord killed a woman on highway 242 near highway 4. a 63-year-old woman from antioch died. a young man was driving. there was an 11 and 13-year-old in the backseat. everyone inside the car is related. but they don't think the family was targeted. officers say they found other bricks on the highway shoulder. >> we believe it was an sdntd. we believe it was a purposeful act that wasica catapulted, or however you want to say it. >> they're asking for information for anyone who saw someone at 9:30 last night on the overpass. of the 715 people tested, at least 37 had positive resulteyc. of those tested, 348 were

essential workers, primarily first responders and health care workers. to get a free test, you must have a fever and be symptomatic. the testing site on stevenson boulevard is open daily from 10:00 in the morning to 5:00 in the evening or until they max out of tests for the day. they've moved homeless people out of one shelter. small buses shuttle people out of the episcopal community services center. the agency hasn't said where it took the shelter's residence. they've been urging san francisco officials to find hotel rooms. also one homeless shelter is functioning as a recovery center after half its residents tested positive for covid-19. they housed 140 people at fifth and bryant.

but now they're living in hotel rooms rented by the city. a group of east bay volunteers hosted a drive for personal equipment. operation love collecting masks, and other items. and one of the organizers says this is just the beginning. >> we're going to keep out here until all the nourishes, all the retirement homes, meals on wheels, everybody has some protection. so, please come help operation love. because i'm a nurse of 34 years and we are here to help and serve. >> and you can help with donating supplies, including making masks by going to operation love on facebook. they'll hold another drive on friday and saturday. governor newsom decided to forgo his press conference and instead shared an easter message from him and his family. >> we're so thankful for

i think the holy days are the perfect paradigm for our time. holy thursday is about pouring out your love, good friday is about love lost, disappointment and betrayal. and easter sunday is about committing and doubling down to love again, in spite of all that's going on. the facts don't change but they're illuminated and they're illuminated with hope and joy. and so, to be a follower of jesus is to be an easter people. not an idealism but a hope that is born beyond all of us and to recognize that everything we have is pure gift. >> and on easter sunday,
