popular spot and this is happening with a shelter-at-home order in place. they have have cited two people for not social distancing and one supervisor says more citations could be coming. they want to do what it takes to keep people healthy. >> we want to educate. we do not want to enforce. 95% of san francisco is getting that. to the other 5%, please, don't ruin it for everybody who's doing the right thing. >> here is a picture a viewer sent us from the crowded interrichmond faintener richmond farmers market. they are considered an essential business but they urged to keep their distance. meeting at the park or beach is not a good idea. it is hard to keep a social distance at gatherings like that and that's why the stay in place

>> reporter: several riders have reached out to us since this video was shot to say that social distancing is only getting worse as some drivers ask for more than just six feet of room. >> i understand six feet. but 15 feet. that's a little bit excessive because the bus isn't that big and now you're turning these buses into petri dishes for the corona. >> reporter: representing 2,300 drivers with transport union of america. he's not aware of any routes where drivers have demanded 15 feet, but addressed the concern. >> operators are saying, look, aside from six feet, i want more space because you're going to violate that to begin with and that's one of the reasons why we started putting the big x with red tape or yellow tape on the floor to symbolize and let people know, hey, don't stand i% ofhe riders.

he believes more needs to be done, whether that involves more enforcement to limit riders, mask requirements or a drastic change. >> i always tell everybody that the muni buses, we are the blood line that gives back to the city, but at the moment we have turned into the syringe that could potentially be infecting the city and county of san francisco by transporting this virus and we need to stop the spread of this virus and maybe shutting the system down for a couple of weeks might be the way to go. >> i did reach out to the high ups to muni and have not heard back from them. reporting in san francisco, j.r. stone, abc7 news. and workers in alameda will be disappointed to hear that the city may postpone the upcoming wage hike because of coronavirus. this is according to the "east bay times." the city council is thinking about delaying it to help businesses that are struggling right now. the current minimum wage is

>> good morning, everybody. hope you had a great weekend. a relaxing weekend. we had some really nice, comfortable weather. if you're waiting for spring warmth, it's here for a couple days and starts with this morning where we're mostly cloudy. we noticed that the last couple mornings and temperatures around 50 in our east bay valleys and upper 40s to low 50s everywhere and little warmer in oakland. san jose 53 and pretty cloudy right now and any outdoor activity revolves around saving yourself from the strong sunshine and the high amounts of pollen today. let's take a look at some neighborhood. here's a look at the north bay where we start out at 49 and already by 11:0 sunshine and hit the low to mid 60s for several hourses. 66 and sunny at 7:00. as far as the east bay, stuck in the 40s with cloud cover lingering throug 9:00 and look at the temperatures take off once the sun comes out. hitting the upper 60s this afternoon and last stop san

francisco where we'll see more sunshine even along the coast this afternoon. temperatures will hit the low 60s and that's pretty close to average for this time of the year. we'll talk about warmer weather coming up in the next few days. here's jobina with a look at the commute for our essential workers. >> we'll check in on a warning from the chp. over the weekend in southern santa cruz county they cited three people all for driving over 100 miles per hour. one person going 114 miles per hour. they posted the citations, they've had a lot of issues with people speeding because of our light traffic conditions out there. please, do not do that if you need to be out on the road. we're going to take a live look now 280 king street camera and light conditions out there. across the board, the chp has not reported anything this morning other than a wrong way driver in novata that they have resolved now. that is it for traffic this morning. >> thank you, jobina.

welcome back, everyone. 5:14 if you're just joining us. seven things to know this morning. number one, covid-19 may is been in the bay area as early as december. this is according to dr. jeff smith with the santa clara health department. according to "l.a. times" the virus was, quote, free wheeling in our community for quite some time. number two, more citations on the way for people who are not practicing physical distancing in san francisco. supervisor erin pescon says fines can reach up to $3,000. representing muni bus drivers in san francisco said a full muni shut down might be needed to keep riders and drivers safe. social distancing is nearly ipossible on buses right now. number four. make sure you keep an eye on

hear some songs working around the house or out in the backyard and kind of get away from the tv for a while. don't do that now. but every once in a while we have to get off the couch and move. let's take a look at what is going on if you want to see the golden gate bridge. a west wind at 15 miles per hour. that is keeping the cloud cover in our neighborhoods. that wind is going to come and the clouds are going away faster and a warmer afternoon, not only today, but tomorrow and wednesday. then we have cooler conditions this week and showers possible. let's talk about what is going on with the fog and just watch it melt away rapidly by mid morning except for along the coast and even there, some areas especially the north bay will see more sunshine than what you were able to squeak out over the weekend. and that's why we have low to mid-60s along the coast and 67 in santa cruz with the northerly wind more sunshine and warmer temperatures than the rest of the coast. san francisco 65. that is warmer than average. a lot of upper 60s around the bay and low to mid 70s inland.

concord 74 and 76 at santa rosa. our sheltered valleys will be in the 40s but wake up to clear conditions tomorrow and with the faster sunshine and that off shore breeze, temperatures will jump up another four to six degrees. a couple more degrees warmth wednesday out ahead of a dry cold front that will drop us 12 degree s thursday and coolest weather this weekend. i'm sold on the fact that it could rain. i'm not sold on the fact it is going to rain, if that makes sense to you. >> got it, thank you, mike. one of the largest pork processing facilities in the country is closing until further notice because hundreds of its employees tested positive for coronavirus. smithfield foods says it's preparing to fully shut down its south dakota facility tomorrow. the state's governor said smithfield workers account for half of the active cases in

temperatures this afternoon. you can see the 70s inland and mid to upper 60s from san francisco around the bay and low 60s at the coast. we'll talk about how long this will last coming up in the vey . morning news from kumasi. health officials are wurngiwurnorking to figure out how long covid-19 has been in the bay area. it could be much longer than officials have been looking for it. julian glover has more on this. good morning, julian. >> good morning, kumasi. in this article by "l.a. times" the chief executive who is also a doctor, by the way, suggests that covid-19 could have been in the bay area and circulating since late 2019. that data collected, dr. smith also said early detection of the virus lagged because of the severe flu season we were already having in the bay area

and the overlap in symptoms with coronavirus. then there were the guidelines that only travelers recently in wuhan, china, should be screened and by that point it was already spreading within the community. by late february when doctors finally tested a hospitalized woman who had been sick for weeks, she became the bay area's first case of spread of the virus and from there almost every positive test pointed to local spread. here's that quote for the article. when public health officials tried to track down the start of the disease, we were not able to find specifically a contact that means the virus is in the community already, not as was suspected by the cdc as only in china and being spread from contact with china. that was dr. smith being cited in the "l.a. times." now the article points to a late start to community surveillance of the coronavirus, which basically led to medical experts not able to catch the community spread of the illness earlier. now, researchers are looking at blood banks in l.a. and san

francisco and other major cities trying to detect any lingering antibodies in the stored blood there to see what could have been missed and what could have been detected earlier. for now reporting from home, julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you, julian. the bay area topped at least 5,000 confirmed coronavirus cases as officials began to suggest there are some emerging signs of optimism with all the social distancing that we've been doing. here is the latest. 140 people have died. santa clara county is still the clear epicenter in the bay area with more than 1,600 cases and san francisco and alameda counties are both approaching 900 cases. lake and mendocino couases say o new cases and no deaths reported so far. now some other local developments we want to share with you. in alameda county the santa rita jail is reporting no new covid-19 cases. the virus has sickened two inmates and 12 staff members

distraction from coronavirus. abc's new show "beauty and the baker" is premiering tonight and one star is explaining why we should watch. first, we'll take a look at what is happening outside today. mike, how does it look? >> a lot more sunshine and grab those sunglasses. if you spend any time outside, you'll want to wear the sunscreen. sun is getting deceptively strong as we continue to add about two minutes and 20 second every day to our daylight consumption. here's a look at what is going on in the north bay. mid to upper 40s in the most neighborhoods and a 50 around american canyon and up around subastble and you can also see patchy areas of fog. it's been as low as half a mile in novato and that is around through most of the morning commute. temperatures else where in the mid 40s and mid 50s out there. bay bridge toll plaza and you can see our essential workers heading towards the plaza and not slowing down since they don't have to pay cash toll. patchy fog, that is the only

department posted on twitter. luckily no one wnshe shea ml when t8:night. and right now the cause is under investigation. a man is dead following a violent string of events that included an off-duty police officer being stabbed. here's how it all started. yesterday morning the man stabbed someone police say during an attempted carjacking at a chevron station in south san francisco. an off-duty san francisco police officer tried to stop the carjacking and the man attacked the officer stabbing him, as well as the carjacking victim. the officer then shot the suspect, but the man was able to leave the scene in a stolen patrol car. police did chase him to a perm permanente and that's where officers shot and stabbed the man with a knife. the officer and the driver who were stabbed are expected to recover. contra costa county may decide on whetherthertherther
