later. reggie, i'll send it over to you. >> thanks. the union president representing muin bus drivers said a full shutdown in san francisco might be needed to keep drivers and passengers safe. a number of riders have expressed concern saying if you are on the bus right now, it's basically impossible to properly, physically distance yourself from the person next to you. let's go to j.r. stone with more. >> reporter: this is what the 38 bus line into downtown san francisco looked like last thursday night. people packed in just a matter of feet from one another. jim walls shot this on facebook live. >> i don't even feel safe taking muni at this point. >> reporter: in fact, several riders have reached out to us since this video was shot saying social distancing is only getting worse as some drivers ask for more than six feet of room. >> i understand six feet, but 15 feet is a little bit excessive because the bus isn't that big and now you're turning these buss into petri dishes for the

corona. >> reporter: roger is union president representing 2,300 or so drivers with transport workers union of america. he is not aware of any routes where drivers have demanded 15 feet, but addressed the concern. >> operators are saying, look, aside from my six feet, i want more space because you're going to violate that to begin with and that's one of the reasons that we started putting the big x with red tape or yellow tape on the floor to symbolize and let people know, hey, don't stand in this space. >> reporter: last week muni drastically cut buss to focus on the 20% of routes that serve 80% of the riders. moranko believes more needs to be done, whether that involves more enforcement to limit riders, mask requirements or a drastic change. >> i always tell everybody that the muni buses, we are the blood line in this city but at the moment we have turned into the syringe that could potentially be infecting the city and county

us and we need to stop the spread of this virus and maybe shutting the system down for a couple of weeks might be the way to go. >> i did reach out to the high ups with muni through e-mail and also phone calls and have not yet heard back from them. reporting in san francisco, j.r. stone, abc7 news. ucsf is getting a big shipment of big protective personal equipment. the ceo sales force is sending four tractor trailers full. he tweeted these pictures and the trucks have half a million n95 masks and 100,000 facial gowns and 50,000 face shields. uber freight donated the transportation. also sending personal protective equipment to michigan, as well as louisiana. partnered with walmart, state farm and biz roundtable to donate 1.3 million masks and gloves and shoe covers.

wine tasting is going high tech. a number of bay area wineries are now offering virtual tasting sessions. the concept is pretty simple. first, you have to order the wine. once it gets to your house, then you logon with the host and they'll give you a guided wine tasting that is conducted over the web. under california's shelter-in-place order tasting rooms are closed but production can continue. amazon announces big changes coming to its grocery delivery service and as whole foods as it deals with a flood of new customers trying to avoid going to the store. plus a warning this morning about n95 masks. many people are still trying to buy them online and you know the scammers are trying to cash in. and you felt a touch of it yesterday. warm sunshine on the way for the early parts of this week and then cooler weather possibly some rain this coming weekend.

this is abc7 mornings. start with some neighborhood temperatures mostly cloudy on the peninsula and 45 from menlo park and near 52 in half moon bay and those temperatures are pretty indicative of what everybody else is waking up to except for up in the north bay. you are waking up to mid to upper 40s and fog. here's a look at your activity plan for today and it revolves around warm sunshine, too much pollen if you have allergies and wear the sunscreen. it is going to be even stronger that sun. 48 with some fog in the north bay through about 7:00. we start to turn partly cloudy at 9:00 and 52. we hit the low 70s to mid 70s for several hours this afternoon. east bay not quite as warm and get rid and near this afternoon and then for san francisco, temperatures pretty close to average in the low to mid 60s

demand, new amazon fresh and whole foods market delivery customers will be added to a waitlist. will have to wait for an invitation before they can shop. amazon says it's prioritizing existing customers during the pandemic. in the meantime, working on increasing capacity so that they can serve more customers and adjusting hours at whole food stores so they can give employees time to restock everything. one of the largest pork processing facilities in the clo until further notice after hundreds of employees there tested positive for covid-19. smithfield foods says it's preparing to fully shut down its south dakota facility tomorrow. smithfield workers account for more than half of the active coronavirus cases in south dakota. the company ceo says the closure puts the country's meat supply at risk. it accounts for 4% to 5% of the country's pork production.

the clouds are starting to break up and pretty stiff onshore breeze west at 15. that is going to change today and that is going to lead us to faster sunshine with drier air coming in and warmer temperatures this afternoon. tonight is going to be clear and a little bit cooler, especially in our valleys because we will have the cloud cover and off-shore breeze will take that away from us and bring us warmer weather until the weekend when it's cooler and some showers possible. before we get to that seven-day forecast. let's take a look at how fast the fog fades. by mid-morning it is almost gone and even at the coast, more sunshine tha o it wouldn't take much, honestly, to get a little bit more. let's see how the temperatures respond. inland low to mid 70s. look at that 76 in santa rosa. 73 in napa and 74 inan mid uppes cisco and aro60on tonight, see the winds blowing off shore. cloud cover gone. seeing a lot of stars tonight. 40s in our valleys.

morning. we do have a little bit of fog, a whole lot of fog around napa and down towards american canyon. watch out. that is going to be around for another houtwo hours. whenou step outside, temperatures mainly i we do have some mid 50s and 53 around oakland and calastoga 52 degrees. average if not above average with low 60s along the coast and mid to upper 60s san francisco and around the bay and low to mid 70s inland. the warming trend that started yesterday continues today and gets stronger the next couple days. i'll show you those numbers coming up next. >> thanks, mike. health officials are working to figure out how long covid-19 has been in the bay area. a new report suggests it could have been long before they started looking for it. julian glover is live with these details. good morning, julian. >>kumasi. this new article in "l.a. times" dr. jeff smith who is the chief

executive of santa clara county and a doctor point the fact that the coronavirus could have been here in the bay area and circulating since late 2019. we're talking about december of last year. now, the realization is thanks to data collected by the centers for disease control and local health departments, dr. smith also said early detection of the virus lagged because of the severe flu season we already had. in the bay area and the overlap in symptoms with the coronavirus. then there were the guidelines that only travelers recently in wuhan, china, should be screened and by that point it was spreading within the community here. by late february when doctors finally tested a hospitalized woman who had been sick for weeks, she became the bay area's first case of community spread of the virus. and from there, almost every positive test pointed towards local spread. here's direct quote from that l.a. times article, when public health officials tried to track down the start of the disease, we were unable to find

specifically a contact. that means the virus is in the community already, not as we suspected by the cdc as only in china and being spread from contact with china. again, that being dr. smith, the chief executive of santa clara county. the article also points out to a late start to community surveillance of coronavirus, which led to medical leaders not catching the community spread of the illness earlier. now researchers are looking at blood banks in l.a. and san francisco and other major cities to try and see if there is some lingering antibodies in that stored blood that can point them to what could have been missed and what possibly could have been detected earlier. for now reporting from home, i'm julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you, julian. the bay area topped 5,000 confirmed coronavirus cases as with all the social distancing we've been doing. here are the latest numbers. check out the map. we know so far 140 people have died.

santa clara county is still the clear epicenter in the bay area with more than 1,600 cases. san francisco and alameda counties are both approaching 900 cases. both lake and mendocino cases say no new covid-19 cases there. each county has four cases with no reported deaths so far. now, some other local developments in alameda county. the santa rita jail is reporting no new covid-19 cases. the virus has sickened 12 inmates and 12 staff members and one inmate has recovered. happening tomorrow, concord city council members will consider cutting their own pay by 10%. the council will also look at cutting pay for top city executives by 5%. and el cerrito canceled the fourth of july world one festival. city leaders slashed the festival as a cost cutting move. happening today, san francisco schools go virtual. this is the first day of its distance learning program to keep students engaged through the end of this academic year.

now, "the chronicle" reports the district is still hashing out a plan with the teachers union, but some schedules arrange from our relaxed pace to rigid class time. sfusd rushed to get laptops and wifi to the 15% of students lacking access. prek through second grade can pick up their associated learning kits at nine different schools throu schools throughout the week. the school district announced over twitter that teachers can start scheduling on the platforms. they stopped instruction on wednesday after a zoom bombing incident. students and thendung auptepoms the nation may be getting close to rounding the corner on the coronavirus pandemic. i'm tracking it all here at the live desk this morning.

new york is starting to see its death curve flatten, but still very high. in the 700s for the past several weeks. dr. anthony fauci said depending on test results, it is possible to reopen parts of the country next month. >> we're hoping at the end of the month we can look around and say, okay, any element here that we can safely and cautiously start pulling back on? if so, do it. if not, then just continue to hunker down. >> dr. fauci says it's inevitable that once states relax their restrictions second and third wave restrictions will happen. 557,000 cases so far. and hot spots are still growing in the united states, pennsylvania and massachusetts. expect surges this week. reggie, i'll send it back over to you. >> jobina, thank you. some good news, the irs says people should start getting their stimulus checks very soon.

kayleigh mcenany takes over today. two other team members are hired to help her. unclear what role they'll play when it comes to the president's response of covid-19. she is replacing stephanie grisham who never officially gave a briefing during her time as secretary. a union of golden gate transit bus drivers are being told to pick up extra passengers within san francisco to offset muni service cuts. according to the marin independent journal, the transit's gm made the decision without warning arguing there is enough empty space on buss to p within city limits. it's typically discouraged since golden gate transit caters to traveling through multiple counties. easter sunday in the era of social adry rshipping not less but a little bit differently and even though churches may have been empty, we saw people getting creative to keep their faith.

goodern moi morning. right now the clouds and the water on the bay, pretty much gray. they're mirroring each other and a lot more sunshine and a lot bluer sky out there ase roho the afternoon hours. and temperatures will respond. here's a look at our day planner. little fog in the north bay and look at all that sunshine during the noon hour and a few clouds will linger at the coast keeping you in the upper 50s while the rest of us push 70 at 4:00. very quiet around the state. a stray shower possible early down around bakersfield and otherwise increasing sunshine and middle 70s through the central valley. still a little cloud cover and mid to upper 60s down in socal. for tahoe, yeah, looks like the snow season has come to an end with 65% of average as high as we got this year. >> oh, my god! look at the house y'all! look. >> a funnel cloud right here in front of me.

that is scary to look at and to listen to everyone. multiple tornadoes battering the deep south onnd ay. people georgia. the storms damaged hundreds of houses in alabama and louisiana. and at one point, it left nearly half a million people without power and it forced several states to declare emergencies. trucks, trees, buildings and even semi trailers were toppled by these high winds. we want to shw you this fire. it caused $150,000 in damage at a firestone tire shop in santa rosa. this is video that the fire department posted on twitter. luckily nobody was in the tire shop when it started around 8:30 last night. and right now the cause of the fire is under investigation. a man is dead following a violent string of events that included an off-duty police officer being stabbed. it all started yesterday morning when the man stabbed someone during an attempted carjacking at a chevron station in south

san francisco. an off-duty san francisco police officer tried to stop the carjacking. the man attacked the officer stabbing him and the carjacking victim. the officer then shot the suspect, but the man left the scene in a stolen patrol car. police chased him to a kaiser permanente facility in daly city and that's where officers shot thed them with a knife. the officer and the driver who were stabbed are expected to recover. contra costa county may decide tomorrow whether they will ask the governor to allow for a vote by mail only come november. the board of supervisors is considering making the requests in the name of safety because of coronavirus. the vast majority of majorities who work at polling places are seniors. many have already notified the county's election office that they are n sve e ofthheir hlt if the clear sig of hope starting to emerge in the coronavirus battle and that is a possible antibody test. that test could possibly make it easier for people to eventually

get back to work or school. however, there are concerns about its accuracy. since so much is still unknown about covid-19. more than 70 companies have already signed up to sell their version as soon as possible, some without hard fda testing. >> what we don't want are wildly inaccurate tests because as i said before, that is much worse having wildly inaccurate tests than having no tests. >> a wild west of unregulated tests that would backfire our path to recovery. sanford is developing its own tests and cosg emgency apov w nbe show just how hard the pandemic has hit restaurants. the national restaurant association says the industry has lost $25 billion in sales since the first of march. 3 million jobs have been lost, as well. many restaurants have been forced to shift their business
