hitting the suspect in the torso. we'll have more details ahead on abc 7 news at 6:00 and on abc7news.com. hello and thanks for joining us, i'm eric thomas. >> and i'm dion lim. now to the coronavirus pandemic where starting today several bay area counties are rolling out requirements for people to wear face coverings outside their homes. >> san francisco's order went into effect at midnight. contra costa, marin, san mateo, alameda and sonoma counties will also be requiring face masks. >> cornell bernard is getting reaction to the new rules. >> reporter: life is changing for us once again here in the bay area. that includes wearing a face covering in public. >> dropped the food off at the door and go, you know. >> reporter: ares jackson is working his food delivery job in san francisco where he's now required to wear a mask. >> it is what it is, you know. at least our -- the rates of the virus is going down.

>> reporter: san francisco now one of five bay area counties requiring people to wear face coverings in public. >> i think that we have to protect our whole community. if that means wearing a mask, then if we're going to be out, let's do it. >> reporter: the order means employees at essential businesses, like grocery stores, must mask up. workers at marina supermarket were following the new rules, but that includes customers too. >> if a customer does come to the store and they do not have a mask, then we'll refuse service or even if we have maybe extra masks, we'll offer a mask to them. >> reporter: we found most people were covering up, but not everybody. >> well, i thought it was mandatory like as of midnight last night so i'm a little alarmed that people aren't listening. i don't know. >> reporter: mayor london breed urges citizens to refrain from mask shaming or yop takconfront >> if you're not a police officer, don't act like one. we're not expecting people to

11,000 rooms. he said about 4,200 people are already off the streets and out of the shelters. among those helping out is motel 6, which has committed 47 motels in 19 counties. speaking from a motel 6 in campbell, he appealed to cities that are blocking state efforts to help the homeless. >> i just want to encourage those cities that are blocking efforts like this to consider theirselves in the context of other, to consider their action in the context of their community, to consider their actions in the context and annales of history. they'll judge themselves, not just be judged by others, to the extent that they help the least among us at this incredibly important time. >> the state has a priority list of those who will be put in hotels. they include those who tested positive and those who have been exposed to covid-19 as well as the elderly. now the governor also took part in a virtual discussion about the pandemic with former president bill clinton. clinton asked the governor how

the state has been able to level the curve. >> it was the sum total of millions of good decisions by 40 million californians in the aggregate that took seriously the nation's first stay-at-home order and practiced physical distancing. >> governor newsom told the former president that we are still not doing enough testing, but he said in the next two weeks we expect to get to 20,000 to 25,000 tests per day. the discussion was part of the clinton global initiative. here's the latest look at the covid-19 impact in the bay area. right now there are more than 6,300 total cases and coronavirus has killed 199 people. santa clara county has the most confirmed cases with more than 1,800 and the highest death toll with 73. we're also keeping track of cases in lake and mendocino counties. lake county is reporting 6, mendocino county is reporting 4 cases. the state health department revealed the impact that

covid-19 has had at nursing facilities. among the hardest hit facilities in the bay area, gateway care and rehabilitation in hayward with 102 confirmed cases. canyon springs post acute care in san jose with 64 and valley house rehab center in santa clara has 63 cases. statewide more than 1,700 nursing home residents have tested positive for coronavirus. now, across the nation at least 7,300 nursing home or long-term care residents have died as a result of covid-19. only 19 states have reported the number of cases. new york has the most. more than 3,300 residents have died there from the virus. many small businesses are demanding action from the federal government. that's because they haven't received loans yet from a program designed to keep them operating. the owners of south san francisco's hula hoops tiki bar and restaurant claim their sales are down 90% due to the coronavirus quarantine. they have applied for loans

under the paycheck protection program or ppp. hula hoops has not received any word on a loan, something its owners consider to be a lifeline. >> our daily sales is not even enough to pay the rent or the employees, so we don't know how long we're going to last. >> congress needs to take action and they need to approve the $250 billion for ppp. if they do not, businesses will shutter. >> tough financial times have not stopped hula hoops from providing free hot meals to local health care workers, police officers and firefighters. speaking of the, the need for food is rising and one daly city food bank helped ease that burden for hundreds of families today. abc 7 stopped by jefferson high school this afternoon where cars you can see there are just lined up for extra help putting food on the table. the jefferson high school family harvest food bank served more than 1,200 families. food assistance and donations have ramped up here and across the country since the pandemic

has taken hold. wic, a program that provides groceries to pregnant women, new moms and children has seen a rise in applications. >> we have seen a lot of requests come through our website and through the phone system. >> nobody likes it when your kids ask what's for dinner and you're not sure what to tell them. >> yeah, pretty sad. at least 22 million americans have filed for unemployment in the last three weeks. today workers at a mcdonald's in oakland walked off the job over coronavirus concerns. representatives for the workers say they filed a complaint with the alameda county health department. they say workers are concerned about sick leave and personal protective equipment. earlier this week governor newsom ordered two weeks of paid sick leave for food industry workers. we reached out to mcdonald's for a comment on today's protests. this week they told abc in a statement, since february, we have changed nearly 50 processes

in mcdonald's u.s. restaurants, such as adding employee wellness and temperature checks. mcdonald's continued, adding it's confident employees impacted by the virus are receiving paid sick leave to tending to their critical health needs. san francisco police are asking for help in finding the person who stole the car of an uber eats driver while he was making a delivery. surveillance video shows the car on mission at 14th street yesterday afternoon. the driver says the customer called him to tell him he was waiting in front for the delivery. now, he left the keys in the car to make the delivery when a man just hopped in and drove away. police have not found the car and ask anyone with information to contact the department. today is the 114th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake. every year on this date a ceremony is held at 5:12 a.m., the exact moment the magnitude 7.8 quake hit san francisco. but because of the shelter-in-place order there is no ceremony today.

the group guardians of the city placed a wreath this morning. it served as a meeting spot for people to reunite with their loved ones after the quake. coming up on abc 7 news at 5:00, protests across the country over state's shelter-at-home orders. all of this as some county and state leaders begin to loosen restrictions. as high school seniors forego graduations, colleges are also having to rethink how to welcome incoming students to campus. how san jose state pulled it off today. and i'm meteorologist drew tuma. we've got some sunshine out there on this saturday afternoon, but we are tracking some spring showers in the days

there have been protests in several states as many americans want to get back to work. some governors are standing by their stay-at-home orders. other states are starting to ease restrictions but health officials warn we have to be

careful. here's abc's rachel scott with more on the nationwide debate. >> reporter: as the debate continues over when to reopen the economy, protests are growing across several states. in kentucky -- >> it's all about freedom. our choices. if you want to stay home, stay home. if you don't, let's do it. >> reporter: and in maryland, a convoy of protesters in the state's capital. president trump appearing to side with protesters who are anxious to get back to work. >> what we did was the right thing. with that being said, we want to get back and we're going to be opening up states. >> reporter: some states already beginning the process of easing restrictions. beaches in jacksonville, florida, once again open to the public despite an increase in the number of cases in the sunshine state. and texas governor greg abbott announcing elective surgeries can resume and retail stores can open with curbside pickup and delivery. >> we're now beginning to see glimmers that the worst of covid-19 may be behind us. >> reporter: but health officials warn states must be

careful so there is no resurgence of the virus. >> my main role in the task force is to make recommendations to protect the health and the safety of the american people, and i would hope that people understand that. that's the reason why we're doing what we're doing. >> reporter: new york, the country's hardest-hit state. governor andrew cuomo is standing by his order. >> nobody wants to reopen more than me. the tension on reopening is how fast can you reopen and what can you reopen without raising that infection rate. >> reporter: michigan's governor gretchen whitmer also holding firm. >> we're going to get through this, and we will re-engage our economy when it's safe. >> reporter: as much of the country remains shut down and many colleges forego graduation events, vice president mike pence speaking at the u.s. air force academy's commencement in colorado, but the ceremony looking a bit different this year, with no spectators and cadets practicing social distancing. rachel scott, abc news,

washington. south bay health care providers just got a mask donation thanks to 15 chinese students. they dropped off the masks on campus today where a collection site was set up. they say they were able to connect with family in china who helped them cut through red tape. they were able to get thousands of masks here in less than two weeks. the students were among the few still living on campus because they can't get home to china because of travel restrictions. the san francisco-owned summer camp near yosemite will not open this summer. parks and rec officials made the announcement yesterday after talking to officials. they want to keep families safe. families who paid for camp will see a refund within the next two weeks. san jose state university is hosting its first-ever virtual open house for new students. >> i'm here to talk about a few things that i hope will make

your transition easier. >> now, usually thousands of new students visit the campus for admitted spartan day, but with the shelter-in-place order the university moved it online. departments, sports, clubs and more will host webinars to give students a look at the campus, programs and resources available. days will be split into themes like student life, finances and housing. a couple forced to cancel their hawaii wedding instead got hitched in a parking lot. how one california county is what we do now will forever change our tomorrow. so let's do the right thing, today. let's stay at home. let's wash up. let's always keep our distance - please, six feet apart at least. let's look after ourselves, as well as others. it will all be worth it. we can all do our part. so those on the front line can do their part. and when this is over,

when california issued the statewide shelter-in-place order those looking to get married were out of luck. this week orange county decided to resume issuing marriage licenses, converting ticket booths in an anaheim stadium parking lot into a makeshift wedding venue. allison and sergio rangel were inhawateheckin their i.d.s and issuing their certificate, the clerk in a sealed booth as you see here, wearing a face mask, picked up a walkie-talkie and performed the brief marriage ceremony. friends and family cheered on from home watching on a live stream. >> it is what it is and this is what we've gf. y't sp living,right? >> i love tir wding

dell taco drive-through, the only thing that was open. no shame, you've got to love a good taco. hey, it's super memorable, right? >> that's right, it's a great memory. drew, i was checking out some of your weather cams. sunny and beautiful over the golden gate bridge, sunny and beautiful over the bay bridge, but i see puffy clouds over sfo. what's up? >> yeah, you're right. those clouds, eric, will come on back tonight so tomorrow we'll repeat the forecast. that morning marine layer will greet us for the second half of our weekend. let's show you live doppler 7 combined with satellite. we've seen our cloud cover break down in a lot of spots the past few hours. still some clouds hugging close to the coast but elsewhere we're seeing a fair amount of sunshine. we'll take you to pier 39 in san francisco. a live look at the sea lions, no one to bug them as they sun bathe in the saturday afternoon sunshine. temperaturewise we're mainly in the 60s around much of the bay area.

a little warmer today than we were yesterday by two or three degrees in a lot of cities. currently 60 in the city, 64 in oakland, we're at 66 in san jose. a little cooler in santa rosa. the cloud cover slow to break down there at 61. it's 68 currently in fairfield. here's live doppler 7 along with satellite showing you northern california. a lot of cloud cover breaking down for some afternoon sunshine. that marine layer, that onshore flow will surge back overnight tonight. so we'll call it mostly cloudy over the next 12 hours, but temperaturewise thanks to that cloud cover pretty much on either side of about 50 degrees we'll also find a little bit of coastal drizzle out there. nothing too intense, but that's just an indication that a marine layer, it is growing over the next couple of hours. let's show you future weather as we go hour by hour on your sunday. 6:30 in the morning. there you can see a couple of dots of green close to the coast. that's that isolated drizzle possible. most spots will remain dry tomorrow and you can see in the

afternoon we will get a little sunshine very similar to how today is shaping up. so temperaturewise we have at 65 for the high in oakland tomorrow, 61 in san francisco, 68 in san jose, 63 in santa rosa, about 69 the high in antioch. as we head towards monday, though, we'll watch a very weak fast-moving storm approach from the coastline. this is monday morning at 7:30 in the morning. you see that green off screen will move onshore but it's very isolated in nature. so we'll track the chance of a widely scattered shower out there on monday. if you do find one, you're going to find less than about a tenth of an inch of rain. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. cloudy to start tomorrow, some afternoon sunshine. there's an isolated shower. watch what happens, guys, we do a 180 with the forecast. warmer and brighter weather, especially friday and saturday, our wamest spots in the 70s and in the 80s. >> all right, drew, thank you very much. okay. now to sports with chris alvarez

plan . well, today should have been the first day of the nba playoffs but as we know the league has been suspended for more than a monday and there is no return date in sight. to nobody's surprise, sabrina ionescu was taken number one by the new york liberty. she's extremely close with the late kobe bryant and wrote a message to kobe saying we did it, we got drafted number one. more work to do. love you and miss you. she talked about the relationship on "sportscenter" last night. >> he would be happy and proud.
