were following the new rules, but that includes customers, too. >> if a customer does come to the store and they do not have a mask and then we'll refuse service or even if we have maybe an extra mask we'll offer a mask to them. >> reporter: we found most people were covering up, but not everybody. >> i thought it was mandatory as of like midnight last night. i'm a little alarmed. >> reporter: mayor london breed urges citizens to refrain from mask shaming or confrontations. >> if you are not a police officer, don't act like one. we're not expecting people to police one another. >> reporter: marin county's mask requirement doesn't take effect until wednesday, but many businesses are already on board. >> and i feel like we all just got to kind of play the game right now, you know? it's hard times but we all got to get through it and play the game. >> reporter: santa clara county wants people to wear face coverings but won't make it a

requirement. san jose's mayor says if you've got one, wear it. >> whether it's mandatory or not, we should all wear them. >> reporter: san francisco will start enforcing its facemask ordinance on wednesday. here in marin county, if you're caught without one, it could mean a fine of 50 to a thousand dollars. we know you might have plenty more questions about masks and face coverings. we can help you find the answers. google, abc 7 news masks and you'll find this page, everything you need to know about the current guidelines. governor newsom announced today california has secured thousands of hotel rooms to house the state's homeless population during the pandemic. the governor says the state has secured nearly 11,000 rooms. he says about 4,200 people are already off th streets and out of shelters. motel 6 is helping out by committing 47 motels in 19 counties. speaking from a motel 6 in campbell, the governor appealed to cities that are blocking state efforts to help the homeless. >> just want to encourage those cities that are blocking efforts like this to consider

theirselves in the context of others, to consider their actions in the context of their communities, to consider their actions in the context and annals of history. they'll judge themselves not just be judged by others to the extent they help the least among us at this incredibly important time. >> the state has prioritized who will be put up in hotels. that includes those who have tested positive, those who have been exposed to covid-19, and the elderly. now, the governor also took part in a virtual discussion about the pandemic with former president bill clinton. clinton asked the governor how the state has been able to level the curve. >> it was the sum total of millions of good decisions by 40 million californians in the aggregate that took seriously the nation's first stay at home order and practiced physical distan distancing. >> reporter: governor newsom told the former president that we are still not doing enough

testing, but he said in the next two weeks we can expect to see 20 to 25,000 tests per day. the discussion was part of the clinton global initiative. >> now, here's a look at the latest on the covid-19 impact in the bay area. right now there are more than 6,300 total cases and coronavirus has killed 199 people. santa clara county cases with more than 1,800 and the highest death toll with 73. we're also keeping track of cases in lake and mendocino counties, lake county is reporting six and mendocino county is reporting four cases. the state health department revealed the impact that covid-19 has had at nursing facilities. here are the hardest hit facilities in the bay area, gateway care and rehab in hayward with 102 confirmed cases. canyon springs, post acute care in san jose has 64 cases, and valley house rehab center in santa clara has 63.

now, across the nation, at least 7,300 nursing homes or long-term care residents have died as a result of covid-19. only 19 states have reported the number of cases, new york had the most, more than 3,300 resident residents there have died from the virus. many small businesses are demanding action from the federal government. that's because they haven't received loans yet from a program designed to keep them operating. the owners of south san francisco's high schoul a hoops their sales are down 19%. they've applied for loans under ppe. they have not received any words on a loan, something its owners consider to be a lifeline. >> our daily sales is not even enough to pay rent or the employees, so we don't know how long we're going to last. >> reporter: congress -- congress needs to take action and they need to approve the $250 billion for ppe. if they do not, businesses will

shutter. >> tough financial times have not stopped hula hoops from providing free hot meals to health care workers, police officers and firefighters. the need for food is rising, and one helped ease the burden for families. cars lined up for extra help putting food on the table. the jefferson high school family harvest food bank served more than 1,200 families. food assistance and donations have ramped up here and across the country since the pandemic started. wic, a program that provides groceries for pregnant women, new moms and children has seen a rise in applications. >> we have seen a lot of requests come through our website and through the phone system. >> nobody likes it when your kids ask what's for dinner and you're not sure what to tell them. >> yeah, pretty sad. and at least 22 million americans have filed for unemployment in the last three weeks.

today workers at a mcdonald's in oakland walked off the job over coronavirus concerns. >> representatives for the workers say they filed a complaint with the alameda county health department. they say workers are concerned about sick leave and person protective equipment. earlier this week, governor newsom ordered two weeks of paid sick leave for food industry workers. we reached out to mcdonald's for a comment on today's protests and have not heard back, but this week they told abc in a statement, quote, since february we changed nearly 50 processes in mcdonald's u.s. restaurants such as adding employee wellness and temperature checks. mcdonald's continued adding that it is confident mcdonald's employees impacted by the virus are receiving paid sick leave to tend to their critical health needs. san francisco police are asking for your help in finding the person who stole the car of an uber eats driver while he was making a delivery. surveillance video shows the car

on mission and 14th street yesterday afternoon. the driver says the customer called him to tell him he was waiting in front for the delivery. he left the keys in the car to make the delivery. that's when you see a man just hop right in and drive away. now, police have not found the car and ask anyone with information to contact the department. today is the 114th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake. every year on this date a ceremony is held at exactly 5:12 a.m. that's the moment the magnitude 7.8 quake hit san francisco, but bcause of the shelter in place order, there is no ceremony today. the group guardians of the city prais placed a wreath this morning on market street. it served as a meeting spot for people to reunite with their loved ones after the quake. all right, right away, let's get to some breaking news coming out of san leandro, that is where a police officer shot and killed a man who apparently threatened officers by swinging

a baseball bat. >> this deadly confrontation took place at the entrance to a walmart just before 3:30 this afternoon. investigators told us a short time ago that police raced to walmart after receiving reports of a robbery taking place. officers found no signs of a robbery when they arrived on the scene. instead, police encountered a man with a baseball bat. >> both officers deployed their tasers, which was not successful. after those deployments, one officer fired one shot. the report is that he was swinging a bat. we don't know how close he was to the officer. >> walmart is closed for the time being. both san leandro police and the alameda county district attorney are investigating this afternoon's deadly shooting. well, coming up on abc 7 across t cntry over states' shelter at home orders. all of this as some county state leaders begin to loosen

restrictions. as high school seniors forego graduation, colleges are also having to rethink how to welcome incoming students to campus. how san jose state dealt with that today. and i'm we have some sunshine on our saturday evening. we are tracking the chance for i do motivational speakingld. in addition to the substitute teaching. i honestly feel that that's my calling-- to give back to younger people. i think most adults will start realizing that they don't recall things as quickly as they used to or they don't remember things as vividly as they once did.

there have been protests in several states as many americans want to get back to work. some governors are standing by their stay at home orders. other states are starting to ease restrictions, but health officials warn that we have to be careful. here's abc's rachel scott with more on the nationwide debate. >> as the debate continues over when to reopen the economy, protests are growing across several states. in kentucky. >> it's all about freedom. >> yeah. >> our choices. if you want to stay home, staym. let's do it. >> reporter: and in maryland, a convoy of protesters in the state's capital. president trump appearing to side with protesters who are anxious to get back to work. >> what we did was the right

thing. with that being said, we want to get back, and we're going to be opening up states. >> reporter: some states already beginning the process of easing restrictions. beaches in jacksonville, florida, once again open to the public despite an increase in the number of cases in the sunshine state, and texas governor greg abbott announcing elective surgeries can resume and retail stores can open with curbside pickup and delivery. >> we're now beginning to see glimmers that the worst of covid-19 will be behind us. >> reporter: but health officials warn states must be careful so there's no resurgence of the virus. >> my main role in the task force is to make recommendations to protect the health and the safety of the american people, and i would hope that people understand that that's the reason why we're doing what we're doing. >> reporter: new york, the country's hardest hit state, governor andrew cuomo is standing by his stay at home order. >> you don't need to hold up a placard saying we want to reopen. nobody wants to reopen more than me. the tension on reopening is how fast can you reopen and what can

you reopen without raising that infection rate. >> reporter: michigan's governor, gretchen whitmer also holding firm. >> we're going to get through this, and we will reengage or economy when it's safe. >> reporter: as much of the country remains shut down and many colleges forego graduation events, vice president mike pence speaking at the u.s. air force academy's commencement in colorado, but the ceremony looking a bit different this year with no spectators and cadets practicing social distancing. rachel scott, abc news, washington. south bay health care providers just got a big mask donation thanks to 15 clie knha students who had been attending santa clara university. the students dropped off the masks at a collection site. they say they were able to collect with family in china who helped them get the masks and cut through red tape. they were able to get thousands of masks and it took just two weeks. the students were among the few still living on campus because they can't get back home because of ravel restrictions ch

the san francisco owned summer camp near yosemite will not open this summer. san francisco rec and park officials made the announcement yesterday after talking to health officials. they say they're disappointed but they want to keep families safe. families who paid for camp will see a refund in the next few weeks. the lottery for the 2021 camp will open again in december. campers due to attend this summer will not be given preference. san jose state university is hosting its first ever virtual open house for new students. >> i'm here to talk about a few things that i hope will make your transition easier. >> usually thousands of new students visit the campus for admitted spartan day, but with the shelter in place order, the university moved the event online. all week departments, sports, clubs, and more will be hosting live webinars to give new students a look at the campus. programs and resources available. days will be split into themes like student life, finances and housing.

be back, and we're seeing that on some of your weather cams. >> yeah, we're seeing the onshore flow come on back here, eric. we'll see those clouds return overnight tonight, and nthen we'll track the chance of a few spotty showers for some early in the week next week on monday. live doppler 7 right now showing you it's a clear scan in terms of any rain. we have no pripgatiecipitation. still have some clouds kind of bumped up right along the immediate coastline. the picture this evening will take you to the east bay hills camera. a live look, you can see far in the distance the golden gate bridge. the sun sharing the sky with some clouds from this vantage point, but temperature wise, compare right now to this time yesterday, and most spots you can see are a few degrees warmer, anywhere from two to about five degrees warmer yesterday to today. so temperature wise we're mainly in the 60s for the most part. 62 right now in san ramon, 60 in the city. we're at 64 in both palo alto, san jose, 60 in santa rosa, and half moon bay with that onshore

push coming in at about 57 degrees. overnight tonight, we'll find that cloud cover moving on back in in most cities and we will also find the chance of a little bit of coastal drizzle, kind of an indication that our marine layer is thickening tonight. otherwise, most spots away from the coast will remain dry with temperatures mainly in the mid-40s to lower 50s overnight tonight. let's show you future weather. let's plan out your sunday. tomorrow morning there you can see those pops of green close to the coast, some isolated drizzle, and some cloud cover around much of the bay area. that's about it in terms of any wet weather. by the afternoon, very similar to today how it shaped up. we see that afternoon sunshine breaking through the cloud cover, and the afternoon temperature wise will touch the mid-60s in most spots. so let's look at highs on your sunday. it is a little bit breezy tomorrow close to the coast, but 61 in the city, 68 in san jose, 65 in oakland, about 63 in santa rosa, 69 in antioch and san mateo up to about 64 degrees.

we'll track that chance of an isolated shower early monday morning as a very quick, weak moving storm system pushes by to the south. so monday morning you can see at 7:30 in the morning, some showers offshore, and some of those showers will move in here for monday morning and monday afternoon. again, it's very isolated in nature. not everyone's going to see a shower. if you do see a shower, rainfall is going to be pretty light. rainfall estimates on monday, you can see those showers. the best chance looks to be in the south bay and along the peninsula, and again, rainfall amounts less than a tenth of an inch where we do find those showers pop up. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast, the next seven days for you, clouds to sun tomorrow, monday a lot of cloud cover, that chance of an isolated shower. much brighter and a warming trend gets underway. tuesday and into wednesday, and look what happens. thursday, friday, and saturday temperatures take off with our warmest spots in the 70s and in the 80s. now, abc 7 sports with chris
