in san leandro a man was shot and killed by police inside this walmart. now police are interviewing at least 20 witnesses. >> the governor announces 15,000 hotel rooms will house the homeless amid this pandemic. some spring showers are in the forecast. i'll show you when they arrive in accuweather. >> announcer: now, your health, your safety. this is abc 7 news. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. governor gavin newsom has emphasized since the start of the pandemic the need to help and protect the state's most vulnerable people. today part of the effort took a monumental step forward with the announcement that california has a deal for thousands of rooms to house the homeless. abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez spoke with neighbors that live literally behind one of the locations to get their thoughts. >> we didn't have any

forewarning this was going to be going down, and it just was a little bit of a shock. >> reporter: residents in the south bay were surprised from the announcement governor gavin newsom made during his daily news updates on saturday afternoon. >> project room key would identify 15,000 hotel rooms throughout the state of california. >> reporter: the state has partnered with the motel 6 chain, securing 4700 hotel locations in 19 california counties to protect the homeless from covid-19. newsom had harsh words for resistant cities. >> just want to encourage those cities that are blocking efforts like this to consider their selves in the context of others. >> reporter: the governor made the announcement here in front of the motel 6 in campo. right behind the motel is a neighborhood. >> it's really quiet. it's really safe. there's not a lot of crime. >> reporter: cindy puma has lived in the neighborhood for over two decades. >> a lot of people are in that situation due to circumstances they just can't control. i would just hope that our

and some states are getting creative. arkansas even has a covid-19 food access map that lists information on farms, businesses, restaurants, and organizations offering food. >> we're all in an uncertain time. and we're really excited that this is one thing that we can do to step into the realm to hopefully alleviate concern around where to find food. in houston a united airlines baggage handler is now leading a companywide effort to transform empty cargo facilities into distribution centers. many small businesses are demanding action from the federal government because they haven't received loans yet from and reaurant claheir salesans l are down coruqu. they've applied for loans under the paycheck protection program, or ppp. hula hoops has not received any word on a loan, something its owners consider to be a lifeline. >> our daily sales is not even

>> it is what it is, you know. at least the rates of the virus is going down. >> reporter: san francisco,000 now one of five bay area counties requiring people to wear masks in public. >> i think we have to protect our whole community and if that means wearing a mask then if we're going to be out let's do it. >> reporter: the order means employees at essential businesses like grocery stores must mask up. workers at marina supermarket were following the new rules but that includes customers too. >> the customer does come to the store and they do not have a mask then we'll refuse service or even if we have maybe extra masks we'll offer a mask to them. >> reporter: we found most people were covering up. but not everybody. >> well, i thought it was mandatory like as of midnight last night. so i'm alarmed people aren't listening. i don't know. >> reporter: mayor london breed urges skenz citizens to refrain from act shaming or

can click to ask for help. just go to abc7 news.com/covid help. now here's the latest on the impact of coronavirus here in the bay area. right now our region has more than 6300 cases and 199 people have died. santa clara county our region's most populous county, it's also the hardest hit with more than 1800 cases and 73 deaths. north of the bay area there are now 11 confirmed cases of coronavirus. lake county has 6. mendocino county has five. so far nobody has died from covid-19 in lake and mendocino counties. the state health department has revealed the impact that covid-19 has had at nursing facilities. here are the hardest-hit facilities in the bay area. gateway care and rehabilitation in hayward with 102 confirmed cases. canyon springs post-acute care in san jose with 64 cases. and valley house rehabilitation center in santa clara has 63 cases. well, a simple trip to the

store turned into chaos today in the east bay for many shoppers. a man was shot and killed by a san leandro police officer inside a busy walmart. the shooting took place on a store right near interstate 880. luz pena spoke with one shopper who had gone there just to find a shorter line. >> i don't want to be -- i don't want to be here. excuse me. >> reporter: a glimpse into the fear and uncertainty that many lived inside this walmart. >> it was scary. i was at the back of the store and all i heard was a bunch of people running to the back saying that there was a shooter. so it was pretty scary. >> reporter: this shopper, who preferred to remain anonymous, drove to the store hoping the lines were shorter for supplies. instead found chaos. >> there ways long line up in the davis one, so we just kind of decided to try this one to see if the lines were shorter,

and they were. >> reporter: up front right at the entrance a man was shot and killed by san leandro police officer. two officers received a call about a man brandishing a baseball bat inside the store. initial reports pointed to a potential robbery. >> during the detention officers deployed a taser. the taser was ineffective. the same officer then fired one shot at the sprkts striuspect sm in the torso. at the same time simultaneously the second officer deployed their taser. >> reporter: lieutenant henderson confirmed the officers determined there was a robbery and requested for the man to drop the baseball bat. but he refused. >> if there's a taser deployment, there has to be some type of perceived threat and this is an active threat. >> reporter: at least 20 people are being interviewed as witnesses of this shooting. in a statement walmart said to abc 7 news in part appreciate t response of local authorities and are thankful no one else was

a wells fargo on california street. >> reporter: something very bizarre has happened here. i am at a wells fargo. i walked in and there is absolutely nobody here. no tellers, no managers, nobody. i just simply walked in and i -- see? walked in and discovered that everybody went home. yet i think they forgot to lock it. there's one more person here with me, a gentleman. we're waiting. i've called police. see? there's no tellers, nobody around. is there anybody here? hello? hello? nobody in the bathrooms, nobody behind here. nobody anywhere. there's another door back here. but this one is locked. >> lyanne waited for the police. an officer showed up and checked for any sign of foul play and

discovered nothing. hopefully those doors are locked now. today workers at a mcdonald's in oakland walked off the job over coronavirus concerns. >> when we fight -- >> we win! >> reporter: representatives for the workers say they filed a complaint with the alameda county health department. they say workers are concerned about sick leave and personal protective equipment. earlier this week governor newsom ordered two weeks of paid sick leave for food industry workers. mcdonald's sent us a response saying, "our organization is committed to protecting our crew in accordance with the guidance of the cdc and in full compliance with all state-level orders including sick pay and ppe requirements." san jose state is hosting its first ever virtual open house for new students this week. >> i'm here to talk about a few things that i hope will make your transition easier. >> well, usually thousands of new and prospective students rift the campus for admitted spart. day. but with the shelter in place order the university moved the

event online. all week departments, sports, clubs and more are hosting live web nars to give new students a look at the campus and services available. days will be split into themes like student life, finances and housing. health care workers in the south bay just got thousands of masks thanks to a donation by 15 chinese students. abc 7 news was at sainta clara university where the students attend and reside. they're unable to go home because of travel restrictions. they said they were able to connect with family in china who helped them cut through red tape. one of the students said they wanted to help because it's everybody's responsibility to do their part. >> we are all international students. so we understand that we are in a global village and we have a shared future. so we need to do something. and helping others is like helping ourselves. >> in less than two weeks the students collected and donated 3,000 surgical masks and 1,700 n95 masks.

the entire population of a north bay town will get the opportunity to be tested for the coronavirus. the "mercury news" reports the town of balinas in marin county will be the subject of a privately funded quest this monday. multimillionaires who live in the area are using their wealth and connections to get tests for the town's residents instead of waiting for the government. they include a venture capitalist, his wife, and flickar co-founder as well as the founder of a pharmaceutical company. researchers here in california are looking into using uv light to kill the coronavirus. for two decades the university of california santa barbara has been developing l.e.d. lights for homes, winning the lead researcher a nobel prize. more reecht recently the project took its focus to cleaning. they started using uv light to disinfect water but since the covid-19 pandemic they're starting to use the same technology to disinof effective personal protective equipment or even air and water from the coronavirus. >> we increase the efficiency in

the power of the lights. as the efficiency and power increase the time required to disinfect goes down. in one case i saw they were able to disinfect an entire surface in 30 seconds. >> if the national institutes of health confirms that it works it could eventually be used to clean even more. well, today is the 114th anniversary of the 1906 earthquake. every year on this date a ceremony is held at 5:12 a.m. that's the exact moment the magnitude 7.8 quake hit san francisco. but because of the shelter in place order there was no ceremony today. the group guardians of the city did place a wreath this morning at lottis fountain on market street. served as a meeting spot for people to reunite with their loved ones after the quake. check now of the forecast. drew tuma giving us the forecast from home. what's up? >> yeah, hi, eric. we're going to find our marine layer coming on back tonight. maybe some coastal drizzle first thing tomorrow morning. but monday we have a better

chance of finding some scattered showers out there. a little system moves through the bay area. let's show you what's going on right now. live doppler 7. that was the seven-day forecast for you. live doppler 7 along with satellite showing you the sweep across the region right now. it's a quiet one. you see the cloud cover off the coastline. that's going to move back in while many of us are sleeping tonight. and we'll start our day off tomorrow with a fair amount of cloud cover first thing. temperatures right now are at 48 in santa rosa but we're still holding at about 54 in the city. warmer in oakland. 57 right now. 56 that current temperature in san jose. and san ramon coming in at 52. cooler on the coast. you can see half moon bay already dropping down to the mi with satellite. the bigger picture we had a fair amount of cloud cover over northern california today. we're watching a system that is off our coast right now. a lot of cloud cover. the moisture is still well away from us. but it will quickly move in here on monday and it will bring us a chance of some scattered showers first thing on our monday.

but tomorrow it's a pretty quiet day and temperaturewise it's pretty comfortable. overnight tonight we'll likely see some drizzle right along the immediate coastline. away from the coast we will remain dry although pretty cloudy. temperatures in our coldest spots will drop into the mid 40s along the bay shoreline we'll be in the upper 40s to lower 50s first thing tomorrow morning. so let's go hour by hour on future weather, show you what's going to happen 6:30 in the morning you can see a fair bit of cloud cover overhead. call it mostly cloudy to start out our sunday, and then just like today in pretty typical april fashion we'll see that cloud cover break down, we'll get afternoon sunshine out there. temperatures pretty close to average for this time of year, if not just slightly below where we should be. so highs on our sunday, we will see partly sunny skies in the afternoon and there you can see a high of about 61 in the city. 68 in san jose. about 65 in oakland. 63 in santa rosa. 69 in antioch. cool and breezy half moon bay,

only at about 59 degrees. we do have a beach hazard statement that will go into effect late tomorrow night as our quick-moving storm approaches us. what that means, just increased risk of sneaker waves and strong rip currents. at least through monday night. so future weather we'll show you as we get to monday morning we'll find that cloud cover, some coastal drizzle and then as we goat throughout the late morning and the early afternoon we'll have that chance of an isolated shower. if you do find a shower, it will be very light in nature and total rainfall will end up being less than a tenth of an inch. so here's the accuweather seven-day forecast planning the next seven days for you. clouds to sun tomorrow. there's that chance of an isolated shower. and then the pattern just does a 180 on us. we turn brighter. we turn warmer. and by friday and saturday, eric, we are well above average. the temperatures in the 70s and low 80s away from the coast. >> all right, drew, thank you very much. appreciate it. well, leife goes on for the

i'm eric thomas. in tonight's headlines, shoppers shaken up after a man was shot and killed by san leandro police inside a busy walmart on hesperian boulevard. the two officers received a call about a man with a baseball bat inside the store and a potential robbery. police say the man refused to drop the bat after confirming there was no robbery. the officer who shot the man has been placed on administrative leave. california has secured 15,000 hotel rooms for the state's homeless to shelter in place. the governor made the announcement in partnership with motel 6. 47 hotel locations in 19 counties have been secured across the state including one in campbell. face coverings are now required in six bay area counties. san francisco's order went into effect at midnight. contra costa, marin, san mateo, alameda and sonoma counties will also require face masks. enforcement is expected to start next week. well, some governors are easing restrictions on stay-at-home orders. residents in some states are getting heftless and holding

protests. testing remains one of the big issues for life to return to some semblance of normal. but many states say they just don't have enough tests. abc news reporter mark stewart has the story. >> reporter: as the federal government and governors lay out new guidelines for reopening the economy, frustrated residents in several states continue to take to the streets in protest. anxious to get back to work. in maryland and ohio and in texas, where the governor has begun easing? restrictions. retail stores are being allowed to reopen with delivery or curbside pickup. and elective surgeries will resume next week. jacksonvillenc again open to the public stctns gorn desantis nening the sunshine state. >> we want to continue with florida's economic development strategy. we have a lot of great irons in the fire but this hit and we want to be able to get that back going forward. >> reporter: but health officials continue to stress the

importance of social distancing. >> what this graph illustrates is the amazing work of the american people to really add here to social distancing. they were able to decrease the number of cases so that in general most of the metro areas never had an issue of complete crisis care of all of their hospitals in a region. >> reporter: however, a key hurdle for reopening large portions of the country comes down to testing. roughly 3 1/2 million americans have been screened for covid. that's only 1% of the population. tonight california's governor says the state doesn't h w exponentially more, get up to 95,000 tests a day if we had those additional supply materials. >> reporter: texas, with a population of 29 million people, ranks worse. 49th per capita. and for the millions of americans who continue to stay at home, an evening of entertainment for a cause.

a benefit concert sponsored by the world health organization, airing on all three major networks. mark stewart, abc news, new york. late tonight, global citizen announced the one world concert raised nearly $128 million to help support health care workers. in san diego a group of people protested against stay at home orders issued by california along with cities and counties across the state. organizers say the demonstrators ar just people who love their local parks and would like to enjoy them again. one of the protest leaders said, "my constitutional rights overrule these restrictions." at least one elected leader in early nt bus called for b ocl distancing rules. let us work! let us work! >> protesters demanded that businesses be allowed to reopen during a march to the texas

thomas modly, the acting navy secretary, who has since resigned amid a public outcry. now the navy's top admiral will review whether crozier stepped out of line or did the right thing by ignoring his chain of command and e-mailing his superiors. more than 600 sailors have tested positive. at least one has died. in santa rosa, crozier's hometown, police strarted enforcing sonoma county's shelter in place order. so far officers have issued 40 written warnings to businesses. they've also given two citizens written warnings while citing five other people. many of the complaints have stemmed from non-essential business remaining open. officers have also dealt with people having parties or gatherings at their homes involving folks who don't live with them. and they have also observed groups hanging out in parks. walmart is looking to hire 50,000 new workers to keep up with increased demand. with people stuck at home, sales of household staples are up signyndti's one of the few big box retailers remaining open
