in cases at meatpacking plants. >> a doctor in new york says the emergency room is quieter but patients are arriving sicker and in boston which is expected to reach its peak yesterday doctors say they've been admitting several children each day. >> in other parts of the country, protesters are demanding the economy be re-opened and now several southern states are taking action. that's where abc's andrea fujii begins our coverage. >> reporter: this morning plans are in place to open some parts of the country amid the coronavirus pandemic. georgia's governor announcing gyms, barber shops and bowling alleys can re-open friday. some restaurants and theaters too with social distancing. the governor saying their curve is flattening, but atlanta's mayor is saying it's too soon. >> i am extremely concerned about the announcement thegovern i hope that he's right and i'm wrong because if he's wrong, then more people will die. >> reporter: south carolina set to allow most retail stores to re-open but only at 20%

capacity. many small businesses applauding the decision. >> we're excited about the future, and we're positive, and we're just we're really glad we can have people in the store again. >> reporter: tennessee set to re-open most businesses may 1st. and criticism as beaches in jacksonville, florida, re-opened over the weekend despite the county's 13% increase in cases. even with strict social distancing required, images of crowds sparked the #floridamorons, but the white house task force's deborah birx praised them. >> i know from jacksonville they had less than 20 cases a day. so, this is how we need to start informing the community. these websites are critical. it's by zip code and county. they can see cases. >> reporter: and protests continue with demands their states open back up. in harrisburg, pennsylvania, thousands protest the state's stay-at-home orders. most came without masks. >> we're not subjects. we're citizens.

we're free people. >> reporter: in phoenix, arizona, protesters face off with people dressed in scrubs as hundreds say they want their economy to re-open. as colorado's cases decrease, their governor just announced their stay-at-home orders may be lifted next week with continued social distancing. but if cases increase there, things could change. kenneth and mona, back to you. as congress negotiates a new relief plan for small businesses, the previous stimulus plan is coming under fire. some small business owners are now suing bank of america, j.p. morgan chase and wells fargo claiming the ban ge bgerceinr loanfit o of the banks denied the allegations. wells fargo did not immediately comment. to the battle over testing. maryland has now purchased 500,000 coronavirus tests from south korea and comes as the white house insists the u.s. has improved testing capacity but some states are reporting gaps in supplies.

abc's alex presha is in washington with the latest. alex, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kenneth. president trump says the criticism over testing capacity for the coronavirus is partisan, despite governors from both parties asking for more help. this morning, president trump firing back at governors who had been critical of the administration's response to the pandemic as he highlights testing locations across the country. >> these are all locations. that's a lot of locations. >> reporter: the president claims adequate testing already exists saying it's not being utilized and singling out the republican governor of maryland, larry hogan. >> some of the governors like as an example the governor from maryland didn't really understand the list. he didn't understand too much about what was going on so now i think he'll be able to do that. it's pretty simple. >> reporter: during the white house briefing, dr. deborah birx showed an

extensive list of labs available to each state. >> this is what florida looks like. next slide. this is what louisiana looks like. next slide. maryland with significant capacity. >> reporter: governor hogan said he was already in contact with all of the maryland labs on that list, but some are federally run and were, therefore, off-limits. the white house now says that will change allowing states to use them. earlier hogan announced the state purchased 500,000 tests from south korea with the help of his wife who grew up in seoul. >> the administration made it clear over and over again that they want the states to take the lead and we have to go out and do it ourselves, and so that's exactly what we did. >> no, i don't think he needed to go to south korea. i think he needed to get ident for seinus a list of federal labs and generously offering maryland use of them. accessing these federal labs will be critical for utilizing the 500,000 tests we have acquired from south korea. in new york, governor cuomo says it's not the labs but the lack of testing supplies that's needed. cuomo will meet with the president today at the white house as new york shows signs that it has now turned a corner in this crisis. >> the question is now how long

is the descent and how steep is the descent, and nobody knows. >> reporter: the decline in new york's hospitalization rate comes as governor cuomo announces statewide antibody testing, which could help determine how much of the population has been infect the and recovered. in california, preliminary results from antibody tests near los angeles show the outbreak could have been far more widespread than thought. up to 55 times bigger than the number of confirmed cases. and while it's possible antibody tests can find hidden covid-19 cases, questionsemn aboutet ant immunity to the coronavirus. >> there's an assumption that when you have an antibody, that you are protected against reinfection. but that has not been proven for this particular virus. >> reporter: now, as for that other big news overnight president trump says he will suspend immigration into the u.s. to help fight coronavirus saying in light of the attack from the invisible enemy as well

as the need to protect the jobs of our great american citizens, i will be signing an executive order to temporarily suspend immigration into the united states. the white house is not elaborating on the statement, but "the washington post" reports that the president could sign the order as soon as day saying he wants to prevent the spread of coronavirus by immigrants arriving in the u.s. >> one democratic senator overnight calling trump's actions, quote, a pathetic attempt to shift blame. we will see where it goes from here. alex, thank you. to the growing concern in the food processing industry. ten states are now reporting coronavirus outbreaks at meatpacking plants forcing many to close. that's raising concern about supply shortages in supermarkets. the biggest outbreak is at smithfield foods in south dakota with more than 730 cases being reported but the state is expected to unveil a plan as soon as today to re-open the plant, which is welcome news for one worker's daughter. >> she's the main provider of

officials in milwaukee say at least seven new cases of coronavirus may be linked to wisconsin's primary election. the in-person vote was held two weeks ago in the middle of the pandemic. after a political fight in the state's supreme court ruled the democratic governor could not postpone it. and we turn now to the new stories of survival. thousands of americans are now home from the hospital after beating the coronavirus including a young athlete from new jersey and a woman in louisiana who was discharged in true new orleans style. this morning, new numbers show more than 76,000 people have now recovered from the coronavirus in the u.s. including a young standout athlete from new jersey. jack allard is a former all-american lacrosse player who was placed in a medically induced coma one month ago when his mother said he had no pre-existing conditions. >> he never vaped. they were asking that. he never vaped. he never smoked. i mean, he took his health very seriously. i mean he's an athlete.

>> reporter: this morning jack is finally home on the road to recovery. in maryland, the father of a college football star ellis mckinney was released from the hospital to a thundering applause after he beat the virus. in new hampshire, nurses discharge this patient to the song "here comes the sun." ♪ here comes the sun >> reporter: after 16 days in the hospital and needing a ventilator to breathe, he was finally able to hug his family for the first time since his diagnosis. a similar scene in new orleans. nurses and doctors cheering and music filling the hallways as one hospital group released its 1500th coronavirus patient. ♪ after 12 days on a ventilator, kathleen bennett left the hospital in tr newrlns stylwhillieng "when the saints go marching in." ♪ [ cheers and applause ]

for coronavirus. yesterday it re-opened hair salon, dentists, tattoo parlors and other businesses as well. and back in this country doctors are warning that coronavirus infections could be far more widespread than we thought. >> researchers in los angeles conducted antibody tests and found the outbreak could be 55 times bigger than the confirmed cases. earlier i asked dr. alok patel what that means if the data is correct. >> so, here's the thing, we obviously know this is a preliminary study. we know that some of the data may not be perfect, but this actually underscores a really important point, and that's that surveillance testing with an antibody test can give us a really good sense of how widespread coronavirus is among people who may not have been tested in the past, and it's really important in helping us decide on when and how to re-open society because it'll tell us who's been exposed and who might be still be at risk. >> much of the focus right now is on the antibody test, but there are concerns about the reliability. what should people know when it

comes to these tests? >> what people should know about the antibody test, first of all, everyone should understand how they work and they are not testing you for active disease. they're not a virus genetic test. they're testing you instead for antibodies which may be able to tell if you've been exposed in the past. now, there's important things to know about the test. as of right now, you know, according to the world health organization and most experts in the scientific field, we don't know what the antibodies really tell us about long-term immunity. that's just something we'll have to see over time with more data and also it's important for people to know that the fda is only approved four of these tests. there are over 90 being marketed and sold right now, and some are not living up to what the companies say about them. they're not nearly as accurate as the claim. >> we know there are a number of medical mysteries surrounding covid-19 from people being asymptomatic to others losing their sense of smell or taste. now doctors have identified another odd potential symptom. skin problems. what do we know?

alex rodriguez played for the new york yankees, we all know that, but he may become a hero for the team across the town. "variety" reports that he and jennifer lopez are trying to raise cash to buy a controlling interest in the new york mets. fans of the team have been long angry with the present owners whose demands chased away a potential buyer last year. speaking of baseball, fans are taking major league baseball to court suing the league and all 30 teams to get their money back. the suit claims the teams are holding on tofans' cash and refusing to give refunds for canceled games. ticket brokers are also named in the lawsuit. a woman in new hampshire ran a marathon all by herself. she was supposed to run the boston marathon yesterday, but it was postponed because of the coronavirus. still, katie got a police escort for part of her route and had lots of fans cheering her on praising her determination. >> well done.

he says the border is closed to immigrants. jobina is live at the desk. >> president trump says he is signing an order to temporarily suspend immigration. in a tweet last night the president said, quote, in light of the attack from the invisible enemy, i will be signing a temporary order to temporarily suspend immigration into the united states. due to the pandemic, u.s. visa offices are largely closed right now. president trump could sign this executive order as early as today. the white house and homeland security has not commented on the move. we want to take a look at the latest coronavirus numbers here in the bay area.

213 people have lost their lives due to the coronavirus. sonoma county added one newly confirmed case overnight. santa clara county and san francisco has been hit hard, and santa clara county has more than 1,900 cases. lake county is reporting six confirmed cases, and mendocino county has five and neither have reported deaths. the board of supervisors is looking over proposals to prohibit rent increases in the city as well as getting extra protections as grocery and drug stores. that meeting starts at 2:00 p.m. san francisco is now tracking coronavirus cases by zip
