hills camera. you can see how clear it is. 55 degrees up there in the hills. let's take a look at our temperatures for today. low to mid 50s through 7:00 and little breezy at the coast this afternoon. 62 to 67. still pretty comfortable for you. 73 to 80 around the bay from noon to 4:00. 78 to 85 inland and still away from the coast at the 70s at 7:00 this evening. hope you enjoy it. back to you. >> thank you, mike. shelter-in-place is providing a big opportunity for cal trans using the drop in traffic to get a head start on a major project under way right now. let's get to the map so you can see see highway 101nd amyhollie and let us know how long you'll see this detour. hi, amy. >> hi, jobina. it is under way. they got started. look behind me. also, listen. boy, when those jackhammers get going, it is loud out here. they actually started an hour earlier than planned. they are very serious about

getting this done in ten days. we also have a look at the project from up above in sky7. so, what they're going to do here is demolish and replace the 70-year-old bridge deck at alemany circle in san francisco. they were going to do this work in july but they moved the project up to take advantage of the light traffic we have right now because of the shelter-in-place order. here is a description of what you can expect when you're driving through here. >> starting at 6:00 this morning, if you're heading northbound on the 101, heading into san francisco, we're going to be closing off that freeway and diverting traffic off on to the 280 freeway. so, 511.org is a really good resource for mapping out where you're going to g and seeg what the traffic conditions are. this is going to be an impactful project. we know that traffic is going to be slowing down, even though it has been reduced. if you can stay away from the 101 freeway, that is the thing to do for the next ten days or

so. >> they were so worried about the traffic impact from this project, they were calling it carmagged. officials were expecting a six-mile backup in both directions on 101. they think it will be better now. but for those of you driving through here, it will still be an issue. once they finish this side, a southbound shut down. follow this project closely if this is your route. this is caltrans biggest projection of the year. originally they said it would take 18 days and now they say it will take ten days. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> amy, thank you. the bay area has more resources to get covid-19 testing. napa county is now offering free testing to people who are showing symptoms or to first responders who may have been exposed to the virus. anyone interested in getting tested could sign up for an appointment on the county website. sonoma county is open a lab.

right now only health care aoiers c me an and they do so by calling the number you see on your screen 707-566-4667. now, new heartbreak for a community already hit so hard by coronavirus. the 5-month-old daughter of a first responder in new york city has died of covid-19. the father of little jay l lasanta has only been a firefighter since november. this morning, we are nearing a grim reminder of where we are in this pandemic. a milestone. a death toll in the u.s., the death toll in the u.s. is expected to hit 50,000 today. nearly 000 al tted positive. president trump remains optimistic saying the u.s. has done a great job in our testing. but doctors say that he is misinformed when it comes to covid-19 treatments.

here's kenneth moton. >> reporter: this morning president trump sparking concern in the medical community asking about the possibility of injecting coronavirus patients with disinfectant. >> then i see the disinfectant where it knocks it out in a minute. one minute. and is there a way we can do something like that by injection inside. >> reporter: the president's question last night was immediately challenged by doctors. >> while this virus is certainly sensitive to many different disinfectants like bleach, we certainly, there's no protocols and the risks would almost certainly outweigh the benefits. >> reporter: trump also suggested the idea of treating patients with uv light. >> so, supposing we hit the body with a tremendous, whether it's ultraviolet or just really powerful light. >> reporter: those comments drawing skepticism from medical professionals. >> if he thinks tanning beds

will cure the coronavirus, he is mistaken. >> reporter: summer heat will weaken the coronavirus. according to homeland security scientists, the virus struggles in warm and humid weaer surface air. >> now you inject the sun, that's how much an impact the uv light has on the virus. >> reporter: at oxford university, the first human trials are under way. researchers believe they'll determine the vaccine's effectiveness possibly by september. now, word the virus may have spread more widely in new york than first thought. a preliminary study tested thousands of people at grocery stores for coronavirus antibodies. the finding one in seven people in the state may have already had virus. in new york city, it's even higher. one in five. kenneth moton, abc news, new york. an unfortunate reality, more people are turning to food

pantries. setting opdrive-through food pantry in south san francisco. mills montessori school where it will take place later today. begin handing out food at 10:00, but we expect people to line-up earlier than that. a double hit for ade's old family-owned shop in san francisco. first, major revenue losses from the coronavirus pandemic and now a break in. last weekend burglars stole cigarettes, candy, soda and cash from the fillmore street shop adding up to more than $4,000 and really tough for the owners of miyako. business is already down 50% and then a community advocate set up a go fund me page and hundreds of people have donated to keep it open. >> i did not know that so many people cared about us. >> that's just a lot of love. that's all that is, to me. >> the go fund me page has already raised more than $11,000. if you would like to donate, we

about some supper 70s for severl hours and san francisco mid 70s, well above average. jobina. >> thank you, mike. good morning, everyone. if you missed abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield at the top of our show, i'll take you live now to caltrans largest project for the year. this was supposed to happen in july on 101 in san francisco. so, you can see the work there. we're also seeing the slow down in the area, as well. that backup that they were expecting. they're taking advantage of the shelter in place order here. so, that you're familiar with what's going on. they're replacing and demolishing the bridge deck in san francisco. they are expecting this to be about ten days or so for the project. they were originally thinking it would be about 18 days. so, you can see there that backup that they were originally calling this cade b it was at a time when we had a lot of traffic over the summer. that is not the case here and

now an abc7 news live desk update. the coronavirus pandemic is about to take down america's iconic retailers. jcpenney is preparing to file for bankruptcy, according to the "wall street journal." in talks with its current debtorsough kr asking for $800 million to $1 billion. the company is in early talks. no word when the filing would actually take place. jcpenney is not the only retailer hurting right now. we know neiman marcus, as well as lord & taylor and several

water. it will be a warm one. temperature right now very cool and comfortable out there. 54 under clear sky in san jose and we reached the top. coolest day this week. that brings us back to average by sunday about noofive to ten degrees cooler. warm spikes tuesday and wednesday almost like today. one of the reasons why we're so warm. look at that. no cloud cover to stop the warmth. look at the colors warming from blues to greens and yellows, oranges and even a few reds this afternoon and indicating how warm it is going to be. look at the march east of the cloud deck during the evening hours. that's the change that is coming for the weekend. all right, 80 to 86 degrees in the south bay with 83 in san jose and los gatos. 77 to 81 on the peninsula. and even upper 60s along the coast. the breezes will keep you from getting as warm as everybody else. mid 70s downtown san francisco and sausalito and 85 in napa to

87 in santa rosa. east bay shore 77 in berkeley and oakland 79 to fremont's 82. east bay valleys 84 from san ramon to 90 in brentwood and fairfield. i think that would be a first for this year. tonight you can see the cloud cover marching in and temperature in the low to mid 50s except for highway 4 and antioch. what is going to happen is the high pressure is going to flatten a little bit and lose its strength as you can see a couple storms move to the north over the weekend. those are going to induce the sea breeze. and the marine layer clouds. and that's why we'll be cooler down to the upper 50s at the coast by sunday. low to upper 70s around our bay and inland. but by tuesday, temperatures are just as warm as today. look at that. that entire forecast is dry, which means thursday, which is the end of april, is going to be dry. may is not looking much better either. we'll talk about that next week. let's get back to you guys. >> all right, thanks, mike. you know, when i think of all the people that have really

talked about the drought monitor and how the drought is getting worse across the bay area. want to take a look at the reservoirs to see how they're doing and 85 to 127% of their historical average which means seismically because of seismic issues, they're usually not full capacity. so, we have a 350% snow pack, so interesting to see where these reservoir levels are after this summer, reggie. let's take you to sky 7 now over alemany boulevard in san francisco and as you can see crews are starting work this morning on a major construction project that will replace the alemany overpass and rebuild highway 101. because of this, you have to drive in that area, prepare for del delays. northbound 101 clois closed and they're doing this early. they were supposed to do it in the sumrd to dot w there was less traffic ros. united airlines making its own hand sanitizer. rallied a group of chemists on

site and they created a hand sanitizer that is registered with the fda. over the past several weeks they produced 550 gallons of hand sanitizer. that's enough for all united employees at sfo and now working to produce more hand sanitizer for united employees nationwide. i love to see that. another story about united airlines. starting today, all of its flight attendants must wear face coverings while they are working. united is the first major u.s. carrier to implement one of these types of rules. each plane will be equipped with 20 masks ondomestic flights. 40 masks on rnional flignd flight attendants do have the option of wearing their own face coverings. once a nurse, always a nurse. this 104-year-old woman in minnesota is helping others during the pandemic by sewing masks for people who need them. gertrude is using a machine that she bought in 1939 and there aren't many people who can say this is their second pandemic, but larsen is one of them.

yes, beautiful morning. we are in for a warm weekend across the bay area but there is aern waing fr warning from offi you go outside. i bet you can guess what that is. good morning on this friday, april 24th. hope you're doing well. >> a nice start to our friday. i think it will be a really nice weekend, right, mike? >> it is. it's going to get a little breezy and little cooler throughout the weekend but temperatures pretty comfortable after being a little uncomfortable today. cheers, everybody. we made it to friday. here's a look at live doppler 7. you can see how clear it is. even the breezes have backed off and that is going to allow the temperatures to warm. now, the breezes will be a little bit faster along the coast coming off the water and that's why you're 69 at half moon bay. pretty warm for you. 75 in san francisco today. look at those upper 70s to low 80s around the bay. mid 80s in the south bay and mid to upper 80s in the east bay and the north bay valleys. a few neighborhoods may get to 90. places like brentwood and discovery bay and into fairfield.

if you don't get there today those in neighborhood, we'll try. let's get back to kumasi. >> all right, thanks, mike. with the nice weather that mike just told us about f today and for the weekend, we know a lot of people will want to be outside. but governor newsom said we still need to keep social distancing and warning us that this is not over yet. abc7 news reporter julian glover is live at home with more on this. julian? >> hi, good morning, kumasi. the bottom line is we're seeing a couple of good signs here in california, but governor gavin newsom says we're not quite out of the woods yet. that's why we have to be really spot as we get out and about and enjoy this incredible weekend as we still practice that physical distancing. the governor said thursday that he understands that at this point, day 40 of sheltering in place, many of us will want to enjoy one of the nicest weekends we've seen in california since last summer. you'll want to get out and go for that run and hit up a beach and maybe head to the playground. all of that is fine but he stresses we have to keep our distance from others so we don't

see a spike in new coronavirus infections. >> i anticipate there will be a significant increase in volume. but i also think if there is and people aren't practicing physical distancing i'll be announcing in a week or so these numbers going back up. i don't think anybody wants to hear that. >> certainly none of us want to hear that, right. across the bay area, health and law enforcement officers want you to keep it close to home. don't think about coming to the beaches of pacifica if you don't live within five miles. hundreds were ordered off the beaches given warnings for violate shelter-in-place orders just last weekend. the number of people hospitalized and the number of people treated in intensive care units both down in the state of california. good signs that will only stay that way if we are smart this weekend and keep that distance from others. we're live this morning, i'm julian glover, abc7 news. >> thank you, julian. happening today, santa clara county leaders will update their efforts to fight coronavirus.

the county has more than 1,800 confirmed cases with a death toll of over 60. public health officer dr. sarah coda is to expand contact tracing. >> the idea is that we dial it down enough such that we can investigate every case that is reported to us and every contact and that we can ensure that every case can isolate safely. >> dr. cody says the county is figuring out how to increase investigation staff to interview covid-19 patients and find people they have been in contact with. a section of san francisco's mission district will become one of the first communities in the world to try and test every single person starting tomorrow. the mission has the city's densest amount of cases when it comes to covid-19. ucsf is leading this effort with a goal of testing more than 5,000 people in one area of the mission. they want to learn more about designated area whether gh a s

they have symptoms or not. they will also under go antibody testing which can reveal past exposure. volunteers went door to door letting people know about this. >> it's positive, it's helpful. we can make sure they get care if they're sick. we can admit them to the hospital for the care. >> the mission district testing will take place at four sites garfield park, ninos unidos park, flynn elementary and cesar chavez elementary. >> oakland is expanding its free covid-19 testing. it's now available to anyone in alameda unwiwit working or volunteering outside the home. you have to have symptoms or exposed to coronavirus and you do need an appointment. we have a guide to bay area testing right on our website, abc7news.com. today some states are taking a big step forward. starting to reopen businesses.

jobina fortson is at the live desk with which businesses are allowed to open today. jobina? >> thank you, reggie. good morning. georgia is taking the biggest plunge today despite reporting 400 new coronavirus cases just this week. governor brian kemp is allowing places like gyms, nail salons, hair saloons, tattoo parlors, bowling alleys among other businesses to reopen today. business owners say they're taking extra safety precautions for social distancing, but not everyone is convinced georgia is ready. president trump thinks georgia's governor, brian kemp, is moving too quickly. so does the mayor of atlanta. she spoke to "gma" this morning. >> some are willing to sacrifice lives for the sake of the economy and that's unacceptable to me. >> other states are making moves to reopen. oklahoma is allowing hair salons and spas to operate starting

today. tennessee plans to let restaurants and retail stores open next week. kumasi, i'll send it over to you. >> thanks, jobina. governor newsom says despite some pressure to start reopening the state, now is not the time to do it. he says we can't let our guard down. >> i know there is deep desire. people are making calls on an hourly basis saying it is time to open back up. consider the deadliest day in the state of california over the last 24 hours. 8.5% increase in the total number of deaths. we saw 5.6% increase in the total number of people tested positive in the state of california. >> johns hopkins reports 1,419 people have died in california. there are more than 37,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus. on the positive side, though, we are seeing a modest drop in hospitalizations and people being admitted to the icu. the bay area early intervention likely saved tens of thousands of lives.

dr. george rutherford sedan estimated 44,000 lives withed have been lost if the bay area would have done nothing to confront the pandemic. those numbers are based on the cdc's early estimate on what the mortality rate would have been with no social distancing measures. president trump is expected to sign a fourth stimulus bill at the white house. members of the house wore masks and gloves as they were approving the $484 billion relief package. it includes money for hospitals and testing. also replenishes funding for the paycheck protection program for small businesses. the bill does not include money for state governments. coming up next, bringing joy and whimsy during these tough times. one south bay woman is doing it with a touch of magic. you're looking live at the big board at the new york stock exchange. we're starting up this morning 118 points. another update on how the markets are doing, next. speaking of going up, yes. >> go ahead, friend. tell it.

what were you going to say? >> speaking of going up, the temperatures this weekend. here's mike nicco. >> they definitely are. like the stock market, they will go down again and go back up next week. let's take a look at what is going on. neighborhood temperatures and microclimates start up in the north bay where it is sunny right now. upper 40s and up towards ukiah and calastoga and 61 in san rafael and novato and 53 in napa. 49 in lafayette and also in san ramon but look at that 62 in g mid 50s along the bay shore and into the south bay. other than a little fog, not much at the coast. a pretty quiet day weatherwise for your commute. let's talk more about those microclimates. we will jump into the low to mid 80s by noon and then mid to upper 80s for several hours this afternoon in the east bay valleys. some areas like around brentwood

we're talking about. they started several hours ago. they started earlier than they planned and they're determined to get this thing going. northbound 101 is now closed. it's a short section, but you will be detoured. it's right at 280. they are demolishing and replacing the bridge deck at alemany circle. they moved the project up because traffic is so light right now because of the shelter-in-place order. that is one positive. but the virus also brings new challenges to the project. >> construction operations like this are always a little bit exciting. because there's so much work to do in such a short amount of time, but it's also a little dfferent because we're operating under the covid-19 socially distant restrictions. so, people are mindful that we have to be careful of what we're doing this work. >> they were expecting a six-mile-long backup in both directions this summer. they were calling the project carmageddon. it should be better now because
