the north bay. that will allow for cooler conditions as it sets up along the shoreline. good morning to you. 55. mid 50s. throughout the day today, it will be not as warm as it was yesterday. we're up from yesterday. we'll look at the fog at the coast. 10:00 in the morning, clouds will increase in the north bay throughout the later afternoon, 2:00 we're in the 80s again inland. that's cooler than yesterday. 60s at the coast. clouds throughout the later part of the day. the second half of the weekend, even cooler temperatures to come in a few minutes. liz? >> lisa, thank you. at this point we've heard plenty about covid-19 patients fighting for their lives in new york. doctors anri nurt with th inclug that brave team from ucsf.

we're hearing from one of those doctors about what's it's like on the front lines. luz pena has the story. >> reporter: pandemic in the u.s.,0,0 cases and over 11,000 deaths. more people have died in this city per capita than in italy. >> i don't think anyone has ever seen anything like this before, luz. >> reporter: in this war of covid-19, front lines of new york medical workers is a group of 20 bay area medical professionals who signed up to help. >> hey, everybody. just got out of a shift here. >> reporter: one of them. >> i do take a kind of battle mentality. >> reporter: when the enemy is a virus, with sweeping through america and killed close to 50,000 people, leaving hospitals scrambling for space. >> a lot of different auxiliary

positions available that you wouldn't expect. >> reporter: when you're trying to help, what's going through your mind? >> the hardest thing for caregivers to see right now is people alone, who are very, very sick and under normal circumstances would be surrounded by their loved ones. >> a consistent pattern he's seeing among his colleagues. >> i think we're entering a phase where health care worker exposure is a much more significant concern. >> i saw this with my sister, a health care professional in new york city, who tested positive for covid-19. she, along with others across the state, are required to reuse their personal protective equipment for multiple weeks. two weeks after testing positive and fighting the hardest medical fight of her life, she's back to work. >> as we're watching some of the case numbers start to improve, nobody wants to get too hopeful about it. >> reporter: because the fight is not over.

in san francisco, luz pena, abc 7 news. >> amazing. new this morning, if you or someone you know recovered from covid-19, reachers at zuckerberg san francisco general and ucsf want you to donate your plaza. you'll be tested to confirm that you've been recovered and that your blood contains antibodies of the virus. your blood will be used to be transfused and-to-treat a patient with the virus. ten patients died from covid-19. in the neighborhood of redwood city, open since 1983 and sfengered to be a top care home ntia>>t' hardthes se facilities because of the fact that the residents require a lot of personal assistance. >> former stanford president donald kennedy was a resident at the facility. he died this week from the

virus. as nursing homes have been especially hard hit from the coronavirus pandemic, we've been looking at these outbreaks in the bay area and what's happening. you can read their stories abc7news.com/iteam. if you have a question or concern, that's also how you can contact them. when it comes to the larger bay area, let's look at the numbers, more than 7,000 cases of coronavirus. these numbers include patients who have now recovered. santa clara has the most with 2,000, followed by alameda county and san francisco. to our north six confirmed cases in lake county. in mendocino county, according to the public health officer five of those 11 active cases are members of the same family on the round valley indian tribes reservation, all diagnosed within the past couple of days. happening today, thousands of people who live in san francisco's mission district can

get tested for free for the coronavirus as part of the study. the highest infection rates of the city, four outdoor testing sites will be up and running through tuesday. a swab test with results within 72 hours and a second test which will detect for covid-19 antibodies. >> either symptomatic or asymptomatic, and be able to support them and their households in the self isolation for 14 days and that's huge. >> those results will take between three and four weeks and scientists don't know if those antibodies will protect you next time. ucsf hopes to test more than 5,000 residents. >> it's been frustrating being at home the past few weeks and not feeling like we can do anything to help. >> are you registering? >> yes, we are! >> those sites will be open at 9:00 this morning and we'll have more information on our website

abc7news.com. new this morning, covid testing site opens monday, pleasanton, livermore and dublin residents can be tested, if you have a fever above 100 degrees, respiratory symptoms, or chronic diseases. alameda county fairgrounds from 9:00 to 5:00. appointments are not needed. up to 150 tests will be given each day. also in the east bay, no more weekend coronavirus tests will be conducted in hayward. the center in the parking lot at cal state east bay will be open monday through friday from 9:00 to 6:00. officials say the change was made to free up resources for residents and employees of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. testing is free and available to anyone with covid-19 symptoms. all right. in the south bay, santa clara county sheriff's department says it's seeing success in its newly

launched covid-19 investigation unit to stop any spread within the agency. amanda del castillo shows us what's being done. >> reporter: an investigations unit like we've never seen, santa clara county sheriff's office launched a krchd investigations unit on the 26th of march. >> we had our first case on the 27th. we hadn't had our office setup yet and we literally had to go with our investigation. >> reporter: nearly a month later, the office is seeing success. seven sergeants, eight investigators two analysts and herself. they're focused on contact tracing, potential exposure, reaching out to anyone who has come into contact with that person and taking steps to stop the spread. >> we've been able to identify contact exposure of certain individuals at work, have them quarantine and then get them

tested. >> reporter: the collaborative effort traces the risk of covid-19 exposure among employees and inmates. >> contact trace something one of our best public health tools. we've seen it work many times in the past with ebola, tuberculosis. >> reporter: dr. patel says it's no different now. santa clara county, 13 sheriff's office personnel have tested positive for a virus. >> that's a mixture of our nonbadge to badge staff and we have about three inmates that have tested positive that have been in our custody. >> reporter: all inmates, plus nine employees have recovered. four others remain in quarantine. >> contact tracing will be really important as we start to talk about reopening society. >> reporter: a specialized skill, time consuming, labor intensive, but necessary in this fight. i'm amanda del castillo, abc 7 news. happening today, this will be fun. legendary singer tony bennett is

two weeks after exposure. president trump is now walking back comments, saying yesterday he was just kidding when he suggested ingesting disinfectant to help fight coronavirus. his remarks on thursday were immediately criticized by doctors across the country for its obvious dangerous effects. this morning abc 7 reporter stephanie sierra says now prompting warnings from the companies making the products. >> reporter: most people know bleach or other disinfectants are not consumable for ingestion under any circumstances, but in the wake of president trump's comme comments, which he now says were sarcastic, it's important to understand that everyone understands to keep themselves. safely and effectively against covid-19. house speaker nancy pelosi had pointed words about the president's remarks.

>> unfortunately, we're seeing republicans make comments with zero connection to signs and facts. clearly and sadly, this president is not listening to medical experts and i don't know which ones he is listening to, if any. >> reporter: the makers of lysol also weighed in saying, quote, we must be clear under no circumstances should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body through injection, ingestion or any other route. >> potentially, it could be very life threatening. >> reporter: raymond ho with california poison control said it's essentially injecting acid-based chemicals into your blood stream. >> and if you're not injecting properly, you could inject air bubbles into your blood stream. >> reporter: to put it in poon e rodisinfectants. that number spiked to 200 this

support loem restaurants who had to lay off staff. a circle of support, part economic stimulater. >> in the beginning we had to lay off 85% of our staff, but little by little, we've been able to bring back -- now we're up to 65, 70% of our staff. >> reporter: the broadway burlington close-knit community. >> saving lives. it's a wonderful partnership with the restaurants and with the hospital to do this joint effort. >> reporter: dozens of restaurants are participating. the idea is catching on in other cities across the country. what started out as a one-month project is getting extended. >> as long as people keep donating, we'll keep doing it. >> reporter: in burlingame, david lui, nbc news. thousands of bay area stores and services are still open, helping to offer with essential needs and many are hiring, too.

you were directly in the sun -- i'm not saying it was too hot, but we definitely felt an absence of that sea breeze with 90 yesterday in santa rosa, 73 in san francisco, cool down on the way due to a stronger sea breeze. live doppler 7. you can see the cloud cover to the north of us. ridge of high pressure still in control. high clouds slipping in from the north and low clouds and fog setting up along the coast. they'll be patchy. it is 55 in union city. good morning, oakland. 58 for you as well as alameda. we're looking at mid 50s in san francisco, 50 in pacifica. live look outside. it looks nice and clear here in the city and that fog is about 800 feet at the coast. we'll have cooler days for the weekend. looking at that fog returning and a stronger sea breeze today, even more so tomorrow. tomorrow, the cooler day. we'll have higher clouds today, but we'll break out into sunshine throughout the afternoon. warming up again next week. it won't be a long-term event.

we'll just see day and a half or so of some very warm conditions back toye upcong workek.nds a at cot, they' continue to ramp up. that will cool us off today. point reyes, up to 41 miles an hour, 20 to 21-mile-an-hour wind gusts. by the late afternoon, you'll begin to feel that sea breeze in our inland valleys. it will take a while but you'll feel it along the coast, san francisco, communities in north bay. hour by hour, you'll notice we have clouds along the coast and also throughout the day, those increasing high clouds. here we are at about 2:30, looking at partly cloudy conditions. throughout the overnight hours, here comes the fog again. early tomorrow morning, it sets up along the coast. by tomorrow afternoon, we're sunny, but that sea breeze is strong and it keeps the temperatures from getting too hot. as for today, we're coming down about five degrees inland.

happening today in san francisco, three muni lines will be restored. 38 gary rapid lines are back int monday the 28, 19th avenue, and 54 felton will resume weekday service to help minimize the risk to riders and operator business reducing crowding on buses. happening now in san francisco acres live look at pictures this morning. crews busy in the early morning hours, rebuilding part of highway 101. caltrans says the major construction project is on track so far. jack hammers were lverizingaynt yesrday morning. the roadway dates back to the 1950s.

caltrans originally planned to start work in july on this. it was pushed up since less people are driving. you can see on this map where northbound 101 traffic is being diverted on to northbound 280. the project is scheduled to end next month. so, keep that in mind if you're hitting the roads. it's a different kind of project in the east bay. a site that has many doing a double take, especially during this shelter in place. abc 7 news reporter kate larson spoke to the artist about this inspiration. >> we just drove by the other day and screeched on the brakes. >> reporter: not the only one surprised by the action at the basketball courts this week. >> the first thought, of course, is that we can't do that. >> reporter: the close-up view proved even more shocking. >> when i came in and saw it was wire, paper and felt, it blew m >> reporter: 6:00 op a sunny friday, this court would normally be packed. it's emptied out because of the shelter in place, but we do have this reminder of preand post pandemic life. >> i wanted to make something

quick peek at the forecast with lisa. hi, lisa. >> everyone knows how warm it was yesterday with the absence of the marine layer and sea breeze. everything will change today. 58 for oakland. 54 in san mateo. looking at warmer temperatures this morning to start out, three to six degrees warm er. and looking at that fog, high clouds in the north bay. as we get to the afternoon, notice the fog begins to clear at the coast, but increase in high clouds. 80s around the way but 60s arrive at the coast with the high clouds throughout the afternoon. liz? >> lisa, thank you. here are the top headlines in the coronavirus pandemic. in the bay area, more than 7,000 confirmed cases with more than 250 deaths. the number of cases in the u.s. has passed 905,000. nearly 52,000 people have died. nationwide, one in four americans say someone in their household has lost their job because of the pandemic. more than 26 million americans applied for unemployment benefits since the crisis began. and this is a bewildering

news. happening tonight, a virtual prom, though, for high school students. tiktok is hosting the event to celebrate life's special moments. tiktok live stream videos to prepare for tonight's party, diy outfit outfits, accessories, beauty tutorials and tips to taking photos from professional photographers. diplo and other guests will be performing tonight. you'll be able to request songs from artists. tiktok has blown up since this shelter in place began. also this weekend, the bay area is part of a worldwide challenge, which you can join in, if you would like, to see how many species of plants and animals live around us in cities and suburbs. 2020 is the fifth year for the city nature challenge. cities usually compete to see how many plant and animal varieties citizens can document by snapping a photo. this year is unlike one we've ever seen, of course, with so

many people staying at home. >> this year it's not a contest. we're all working together to get outside and observe nature near us and share our rvatio s follow social distancing guidelines set up in whatever place you look. to try it with you and the family download the free inaturalist app on your phone. shouldn't be hard here in the bay area. we've seen so many instances of animals reconnecting with their natural habitat since this all began. here is one you don't see every day. a pod of dolphins off the coast of newport beach earlier this week. it's a process called bioluminescence, enabling the dolphins to glow like that. the neon blue you see is often caused by algae in the water. gorgeous. >> today is world penguin day. take a look at these 3-month-old penguin chicks, taking swimming lessons at the san diego zoo this week. the pair is the second set of
