our first look as a few states today begin to reopen businesses. we'll hear from a business owner who's now back at work. ♪ i left my heart and hitting a high note during a low time. the story behind a musical tribute led by san francisco's famous adopted son. abc 7 news at 5:00 starts right now. >> announcer: now your health, your safety. this is abc 7 news. free covid-19 testing is now available for people living in a san francisco neighborhood that's seen the highest number of coronavirus cases.

good evening and thanks so much for joining us. i'm dion lim. >> and i'm eric thomas. that testing is part of a study to better understand how the virus spreads. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard is in san francisco with the story. cornell? >> reporter: yeah, eric, dion, this is all happening in the mission district. health care workers hope to test as many residents who want to be tested over the next several days. locals say if it helps stop the spread of coronavirus they're in. >> this is not a nice time little germ is out there doing its thing so we've got to stop it. >> reporter: patricia delgado doing her part to help stop covid-19. she just got tested. and she'll never forget it. >> the back of the throat, choking you, and then the back of the nose choking you again. >> reporter: delgado lives in the mission district, where thousands of residents havt several outdoor testing sites for free. two tests are available, one for covid-19, another can covid-19 antibodies. the mission is showing some of

the highest infection rates in the city. >> and the deaths amongst our people and in our community is devastating for lateenos and african-americans. >> reporter: the testing part of a ucsf study to help determine how the virus spreads. >> this important study will help us understand our understanding of the virus in latino communities and thus enable us to fight the virus better and more equitably across our city. >> i'm la feeno. >> reporter: sergio valarde got tested with the hope it brings a vaccine closer. >> even if it's one piece of the puzzle, it helps the entire world figure out what's happening, how to deal with this. >> reporter: earlier this week the entire town of bo llinas got tested. the result of that urban area will be compared to results from the mission to get new understanding about the virus, how it moves and who it infects. >> if it gives them the results they want in order to get the data i'm willing to be a guinea pig. >> reporter: free testing

continues through tuesday. individuals will get their results within 72 hours. now, the results of the mission study as well as the results from bolinas will be made public sometime next month. live in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. >> thanks, cornell. a covid-19 testing site in the east bay is set to open on monday at the alameda county fairgrounds. people who have symptoms, chronic diseases or who have recently been exposed can be tested. they must also live in either pleasanton, livermore or dublin. appointments are not needed. up to 150 tests will be given each day. san francisco's laguna honda hospital is now reporting 20 confirmed cases of covid-19. 15 staff members and 5 residents have tested positive. the last resident to test positive was on april 7th. the hospital is under protective quarantine, and the cdc remains on site. now, across the bay area there are nearly 7,500 confirmed cases of the coronavirus. santa clara county still has the

most cases at over 2,000. it also has reported the most deaths with 99. a total of 261 people in the bay area have died from the virus. a hopeful sign of recovery today out of china. china's national health commission said as of yesterday no new covid-19 deaths have been reported for the past ten consecutive days. health officials credit the effectiveness of treatment for severe cases. by last night the number of confirmed cases on the chinese mainland reached just more than 82 rk,800. the vast majorities of those patients have recovered. we are getting our first look at what life is like when businesses reopen in the u.s. following a stay-at-home order. georgia is allowing beauty salons, gyms, bowling alleys and some other non-essential businesses to open their doors. there is some concern, though, since some medical experts predict the state will see the number of coronavirus deaths peak next week. those who are reopening are doing so under an abundance of

caution. >> chairs between customers. you as you see, we have the these are disposable here. >> reporter: on monday georgia will allow restaurants to take dine-in customers, and theaters can reopen but with restrictions. south carolina is also allowing some businesses to reopen. georgia is not the only state that began getting back to business today. abc news reporter andrew dimbert has a look at other states that are rolling out their reopenings and the concerns that's causing. >> reporter: texas allowing retail stores to reopen with curbside pickup. and in oklahoma personal care businesses are taking customers but with some new guidelines. >> we will call them from the car to bring them in one at a time. >> reporter: the city's mayor has expressed some concern about moving too fast. >> we're all just trying to muddle through and find the best path forward that represents a middle ground, you know, recognizes realities but still prioritizes life. >> reporter: south carolina, illinois, indiana and alaska have all also allowed some of

their businesses to reopen too with at least nine more states expected to join them as their stay-at-home orders expire in the coming week. the president's economic adviser says he's glad to see some states are finding ways to get their economies going again. >> we've got this massive, massive shock to the economy that's completely unprecedented, and it's going to be a very heavy lift to get the economy going again. >> reporter: in new york, which has been hit hard by the pandemic, stay-at-home orders remain in effect. new york city's mayor visiting workers on the front lines in the battle against the virus. many experts believe the key to reopening is testing. something new york's governor says he's been focused on. >> the more testing we have, the more we will open eligibility. hopefully, one day we get to the point where anybody who wants a test can walk in and get a test. right? that was the dream. >> reporter: florida's governor says his state is also working to expand testing. >> we have contracted with two different of these labs that can do high through-put testing.

>> reporter: and florida governor ron desantis announcing pharmacists in his state will be allowed to conduct tests on the general public, which should increase the number of test locations in that state. andrew dymburt, abc news, washington. in southern california most of the beaches stayed closed but a few are reopening. malibu beaches are empty and there are signs telling visitors they're closed. orange and ventura counties still have some open beaches. but the parking lots and piers are closed to stop out-of-town visitors. residents are cautious about any activity that could jeopardize social distancing. >> i understand that we want to enjoy life, we want our state to open up again, we want our counties to open up again. but we have to take care of each other. now, take a look. this was the scene in san diego county this morning. a group of protesters showed up at the beach in encinitas to protest the stay-at-home order. the county is allowing limited access to the ocean. meantime, many people

enjoyed a place to exercise safely while social distancing in san francisco's presidio today. this marks the first weekend the national park service has closed parts of several roads to vehicles in order to create a presidio loop. nearby, though, at the golden gate bridge you'll find closed signs at the span's south parking lot. the bridge district wants to discourage people from crowding. however, the north parking lot remains open at vista point in marin county. it was a mild, clear day across the bay area. meteorologist drew tuma says it's not going to last that long, though. >> yeah, that's right, eric. as a warm start to the weekend. but tonight we're going to see our marine layer return and that's going to help usher in a cooler day tomorrow. we'll have numbers in the accuweather forecast coming up. and you a first look at the new norm post-pandemic. a hard-hit country gives us a glimpse of the changes we can expect when businesses reopen. ♪ my city by the bay

♪ i left my heart there you see united airlines employees joining the chorus at sfo. and you may have also heard first responders and others as well. ♪ and san francisco ♪ high on a hill and what a cool sight. a chorus of medical workers at california pacific medical center. bennett said earlier this week he hoped singing together as one would, quote, spread the love and strength around the bay. we are getting a first look today at the changes we can expect at public places following the pandemic. some restaurants and bars in spain will feature glass booths and machines to take people's temperature. coronavirus has hit spain hard. spain's health ministry announced 367 deaths yesterday. that's the lowest number of

deadly daily cases in more than a month. the country is set to relax a ban tomorrow on children leaving their homes. it has been in place since mid march. one of the youngest survivors of coronavirus brought hospital workers to tears. >> coming up, the emotional medical move for baby erin, a 6-month-old girl considered a miracle baby. and i'm meteorologist drew tuma for a cooler finish to the weekend tomorrow. we'll take a look at numbers with the accuweather forecast. after the break. and here at abc 7 we are honoring the class of 2020, who have had to forgo graduation ceremonies and other milestones because of the pandemic. isabel moore you see right here is graduating from alameda community learning center. her friend tells us isabel is a straight-a student planning to go to uc santa cruz in the fall. isabel also is an animal lover and wants to study veterinary medicine with a focus on marine life. from us at abc 7, good luck isabel and congratulations.

happening now in san francisco, construction crews are spending their second day rebuilding part of highway 101 at the interchange. right now southbound 101 traffic is squeezing by in just one lane. that's because more construction equipment has been brought in for this part of the project. northbound traffic will be diverted onto interstate 280 until the project is finished. caltrans expects work to be completed next month. getting the all clear. a six-month-old baby being treated for coronavirus in the uk has been moved out of isolation after testing negative. [ applause ] it really is a miracle.

medics shed tears as baby erin was moved yesterday with a guard of honor at older hay children's hospital in liverpool. erin spent two weeks in isolation with her mother battling the virus following open heart surgery. doctors say erin is still being treated for other conditions but is doing well. well, we were promised a warm-up and we got, it but drew tuma, how long is it going to be with us? >> we're going to have a little bits of a roller coaster ride when it comes to our temperatures overt next few days. tomorrow it's a cooler afternoon no most spots thanks to our onshore push. that marine layer making a comeback overnight tonight. live doppler 7 along with some high thin cirrus clouds streaming in from the north right now. but it's a pretty quiet pattern. we don't have any rain to talk about. and temperaturewise it's very warm away from the coast. so we'll take you outside. here's a live look at our santa cruz camera right now.

current. a few people strolling along on the sand right now. and when we see the temperatures it's a big spread we have. very reminiscent of what we experienced in the summertime. you can see almost a 30 degree spread from the coast to our inland communities. it's 57 right now in half moon bay. but when you're 90 ozzer. we were at 70. you can already see the onshore breeze has kicked in and cooled the city down. 81 that current temperature in santa rosa. the entire state is very warm if not hot today. look at afternoon temperatures currently. it's 90 in the state capital. fresno at 90. bakersfield 90. earlier today l.a. was at 90 as well. even palm springs hotter than that, coming in with a current temperature of 101 degrees. so it is very warm in the coachella valley right now. here's live doppler 7 along with satellite. we have high pressure anchored right off the southern california coastline. that is bringing in that warm

weather. but we're already noticing some changes in northern california. in the form of some high clouds and fog. we'll be returning tonight. so future weather early keeping onthis tomorrow about 5 to 8 degrees cooler compared to today. a high of 67 in the city. about 80 in concord. 76 in palo alto. 81 the high in santa rosa. the accuweather seven-day forecast, cooler day tomorrow. that continues into monday. but watch what happens on tuesday. we see a quick jump in our temperatures. that's the hottest day of the week, eric. and then we'll find a gradual cooldown thursday into friday with numbers close to average. so a bit of a ride we're on our way for the next couple of days,

joe staley was a first-round pick of the 49ers back in 2007. 13 seasons, three all proselections and two super bowl appearances later joe staley officially calling it a career today. now, an anchor of the niners' offensive line, he started 181 regular season games and had another 11 playoff games including two super bowl games. staley was also named the pro football all decade team for the seasons between 2011 and 2019. he wrote a letter today and thanked the entire organization, his family he leaves the game

with his head held high and knows he gave everything to the dame he turns tension helping his daughters achieve their dreams. congrats to joe on a great career. with the departure of staley the niners made a trade for redskins forward, a seven-time pro bowler, trent williams. he's a tackle. san francisco traded a fifth-round pick in this draft along with a der next year. williams was the fourth overall pick in the 2010 draft. he actually played under kyle shanahan in his first four seasons when kyle was the o.c. in washington. the wheeling and dealing continues for san francisco. the neeners trade wide receiver marquise goodman to the eagles. niners turned that pick into tight end charlie warner out of but finished last year on the i.r. with knee and foot injuries. warner's a 6'5", 245-pounder seen as a good blook block t end with ability to grow.

the niners completed a trade with the dolphins for the 153rd pick overall. breida has blazing speed but in a crowded backfield the niners send him to miami. they acquire west virginia tackle colton mckivitz with the fifth-round pick. the niners take three offensive players. mckivitz and warner. the niners' final pick in round 7 jauan jennings a wide receiver out of tennessee. the raiders with only two picks on the final day. the first tick pe took john simpson offensive lineman out of clemson. now the raiders have a total of eight players from the college football national championship game that was played at levi's stadium back in 2019. their final pick of the day they took amik robertson, a defensive back out of la tech. plenty of local products heard their names called. cal's jaden hawkins in the fourth round to atlanta. stanford's coby parkinson the tight end fourth round to celt he'll join russell wilson and company. evan weaver of cal goes to the
