now, your health, your safety, this is abc7 news. we continue to see the bay area help lead the charge to find coronavirus treatments. local doctors and researchers doing their part to study the virus' spread and ways to stop it in its tracks. this morning doctors at ucsf are starting treatments as a new way to save lives using something they call liquid gold. good morning. thank you for joining us. we have a full look at the tests and full look at the coronavirus in the bay area. but first let's get a quick look at the weather with lisa argen. good morning to you. the fog is peeling back. if you're up early, it made its way across the bay and we were foggy halfway to half moon bay. it is 53 downtown but 61 in san

jose. a lot of sunshine for you. you can see the clouds over the city and 60 in petaluma, mid-60s in concord. warming up already but we're going to halt that morning. this morning 2 to 7 degrees cooler on the peninsula thanks to the fog. the onshore push as we go through the afternoon, sunny skies and highs reaching 80 in the inland valley. but for most of us, mid-to-upper 70s but breezy at the coast. liz? this morning precious plasma is leading a ucs study and hoping that works given their experience with other infectious diseases but they don't know for sure. laura martinez spoke with the doctor in charge. >> i came up the elevator the liquid gold they call it because it looks kind of golden. >> reporter: dr. peter chen hong

is likening liquid gold to this -- a bag of blood successfully recovered from covid-19. >> we know they have been successful in fighting the infection. we can harvest antibodies as easy as giving blood and tran fuse it into a patient who may not have had those antibodies jept. >> reporter: on friday night doctors were able to transfer the first unit of plasma from a donor based out of palo alto to a person in the critical unit in the icu. they say it's like a stun gun. >> there are two parts, making viruses and organ damage. we looked at by stunning the virus so at least it's not making more so organs can heal over time. >> reporter: on saturday the world health organization weeted, quote, expect most people who are infected with covid-19 will develop an antibody response that will

provide some level of protection. what we don't know yet is the level of protection or how long it lasts. >> some people do get protection and that's going to be probably the sickest people where your body is totally angry because there's a virus causing infection. >> reporter: doctors are asking adults to give plasma, give blood products if they have had covid-19. it's taken a lot of tealwork and hospitals and blood banks to get the system in place but now they hope those who have will successfully recover from covid-19 and step forward. >> it's here when we have the vaccine in 12 to 18 months. it really is upon us to find therapies that we use for sick patients when we need them. >> reporter: lauren martinez, abc7 news. >> those who had have covid-19 can donate only if you had no symptoms the pass 28 days. you can go to any blood and show some documentation you did test positive. and two people have been

positived now in a hotel. it is linked to the casa questions addia building. 22 residents and 2 staff members tested positive and 17 negative. many of the residents speak only spanish and have underlying health conditions. officials moved all tenants into hotel rooms. this underscores a larger need for protection in the mission. it's seeing some of the highest infection rates in the city but this weekend comes with free covid-19 testing for residents to study how the virus spreads and who it impacts. abc7 news cornell bernard has the story. >> this is not a nice time. the germ is out there doing its thing so we have to stop it. >> reporter: patricia delgado doing her part to help stop covid-19. she just got tested and will never forget it. >> the back of the throat they're choking you and back of the nose, choking you again. . >> reporter: delgado lives in the mission district where thousands of residents are

getting tested for free. two tests are available, one for covid-19 and the other can detect covid-19 antibodies. the mission is showing some of the highest infection rates in the city. >> and the deaths amongst our people and in our community is devastating for latinos and african-americans. >> reporter: the testing part pt a ucsf study to understand how it spreads. >> this will enable us to fight the virus better and more equitably across the our industry. >> i'm latino. >> reporter: sergio la varietiy got tested with the hope it brings a vaccine closer. >> it's one piece of the puzzle and helps the entire world figure out what's happening and how deal with this. >> reporter: earlier this week the entire town of bolinas got tested. the results of that rural area will be compared to urban numbers from the mission to gain new understanding about the virus, how it moves and who it infects. >> but if it gives them the results they want in order to

get the data, i'm willing to be a begin kbrig. >> reporter: the free testing continues until tuesday. individuals should get their test results within 72 hours. big-picture results of the mission and bow leines studies should be available next month. cornell bernard, abc7 news. in the east bay a cove testing site opens tomorrow at the alameda county fair grounds. people with symptoms, chronic diseases or have been recently exposed can be tested. paren appointments are not needed. switching gears, it is the big night on abc7 for an area single we have gotten to know so well. singing from home on the "american idol" top 10, shooting his performance from his iphone. he's got a great shot and dubbed by the "idol" judges to be a great contender. contender. con.

many locals we just spoke to said this park is more packed today than usual. >> we don't want to get infected or spread the virus, so i came out here just for a few hours because we have been signed. >> reporter: we saw a large influx of people visiting beaches and parks to do something we all need right now, breathe. >> having two kids at home, we definitely need to get the kids out for our sanity, to get the energy out. >> reporter: 5-year-old allison was not only missing this outdoor playtime but her friends. >> you miss your friends in school? >> yeah. >> reporter: even though we're still not out white house said there was a study that it could spread from the heat and virus. >> general liver year the transmission of cases starts falling pretty dramatically as things heat up in the northern hemisphere but this is not the flu so we really don't know.

>> reporter: the safest thing to do now is stay home. in san francisco, luz pena, abc7 news. this morning sals lita police said they are seeing extreme disregard for stay-at-home restrictions so now all municipal parking lots will be closed on the weekend. and let's go to lisa argen for another check of the beautiful week. >> i know like it on the warm side but not so much today. this morning we had the white spread fog across the bay and we're going to see the gradients switch and that is going to allow for about a ten-degree drop out there today, especially inland. ridge of high pressure overhead and live look outside where you can see from our roof camera the fog bank and little bit of breeze. 53 in san francisco, 59 in oakland. it's warm in san jose.

full sun 61 and at the coast a little better than a mile visibility, low 50s. here's a look at the fog deck where you will continue to see this peel back and bring sunshine all across the bay. but it is going to be broeezy a the coast. 58 freeland, 61 pet loumia, mild 60s in concord. looks like it's warming up quickly again but we should feel back 5 to 10 degrees with 62 in livermore now. golden gate bridge, pretty gray out there. mist and drizzle early. looking at the warmest day of the week to be tuesday. yesterday we had more of that northerly wind and that allowed for the west wind to be kind of shut off. we're looking obviously as changes because of that fog out there right now, so that should allow for the cooler air to be transported into our inland valleys. you can see double-digit wind gusts here by about 6:00, 7:00, at 15, 20 miles an hour.

as we look at the fog, it is absent throughout the day today so a lot of sunshine. it does regroup, reform and move back closer to the bay tomorrow into monday. and it sets up from the san mateo coast. so another tempered day with temperatures in about a 20-degree spread for monday. highs today, a lot of sunshine, breezy at the coast. 67 in san francisco, low 80s in santa rosa, 72 oakland and san mateo. big-time cooling here and looking at 78 in san jose. not a lot of change on tap for your monday. notice the oranges indicate the warmest weather, 60s to 70s around the bay. then looking at tuesday, lears where the numbers will be encroaching 90 in spots and even warming through the bay but still nice in the 60s there. big drop on wednesday. this could be the coolest day unless you're looking into a ten-day outlook because it looks like we will continue to see these numbers trail off. the accuweather seven-day

a bay area nail salon may be closed under the mandates but they turned themselves into a massive face mask maker. here's a look at the abc7 stars and remarkable transformations. >> reporter: isabella nailbar in montclair is closed for manicures and pedicures but it's now abuzz with mask-making. how do you take a nail salon and turn it into a mask-making

factory? >> a lot of our staff can sew, most of them back home, they work for factories that make clothing. >> reporter: the owner of the salon teamed up with a friend with the idea. >> we started this probably middle of march. our original goal was ten womening sewing 100 masks. that would be 1,000 masks. >> reporter: the duo established a nonprofit called it takes a village, donated fabric from berkeley clothing star britain walker along with mobilizing 150 volunteers created this miraculous little empire. they've already donated 9,600 of these masks to hospitals in san francisco and alameda county. they're right now making 22,000 more, along with 7,000 of these face shields. coca-cola donated plastic on a 3,500 roll that we are laser cutting out of a shop in

good morning, it's sunday april 25th. we have much more to get to with the coronavirus battle but we want to have another look at the forecast. look at those clouds. >> aren't they pretty? our marine layer back overnight, about 1,000 feet allowing for more visibility from the peninsula to the north bay of the right now you don't see that anywhere in san jose. it is sunny in the 60s, mild and fog will continue to move back to the coast. and then eventually evaporate all together. here's walnut creek nice and sunny. cool one petaluma, low-to-mid-60s livermore to concord. system warmup so it seems. hopefully we will get the sea breeze and temperatures capped a bit. 10:00, next hour or so, climbing into the upper 60s to near 70. a few 80s today for our warmest locations. staying cool but sunny and

breezy at the coast. tonight clear, just a little fog overnight. the pandemic has killed more than 53,000 americans. in many cases the number of cases are still rising. some states are continuing to reopen though despite so many questions about testing and being prepared. abc news reporter trevor holt said others are rolling out more testing. >> reporter: stark con trft to an ongoing pandemic. orange county, summer beaches packed with crowds, social distancing recommendations frequently being ignored. in the midwest, a food processing plant ordered to shut down by the county health department because of ram pant covid-19 concerns. in new york, even as the number of new cases and hospitalizations move down the curve, the case is still in the midst of a grim reality. >> just when you think you're going to have a good day, this reality slaps you right in the case. 437 deaths yesterday.

which was actually a tick up. >> reporter: governor cuomo said the state is kulsively, obsessively focused on testing, sign an executive order saturday allowing all first responders, health care workers and essential workers to get tested for the virus. new york also rolling out antibody testing for frontline workers at four hospitals, including elmhurst hospital in queens, which weeks ago one dr. referred to as ground zero for the crisis in america. >> all of the patients in this room, all of the people you see, they all have covid. >> reporter: next week transit workers and police officers will be i believe to get antibody testing done as well. the hope is those exposed to covid-19 will have developed antibodies and in turn an immunity to the virus. but dr. anthony fauci saying it's not a sure thing. >> it's an assumption when you have an antibody, you're

protected against reinfection, but that's not proven for this particular virus. >> reporter: even without immunity, several states are kicking up the process to reopen. >> we're kicked off a month and now going into a new month. >> reporter: georgia was one of the first states to lead the charge allowing gyms be salons to go back to work friday but tomorrow theaters and restaurants can join them. >> we're going to be good, provided we don't get shut down again. >> reporter: also happening tomorrow montana and mississippi will allow retailers to operate with social distancing measures in place. tennessee restaurants will be allowed open at 50% capacity. colorado will allow personal services like dog grooming and personal training and minnesota will let industrial workers and office employees who can't work from home and don't face customers to go back on the job. but the looming threat of the virus will still keep millions of workers home. so many finding their business businesses crippled by an expanding economic crisis.

>> we're basically doing 20% of the business we normally do on a monthly basis. you can't survive. 346 congress rushing to pump another $310 billion into the paycheck protection program designed to help small businesses keep paying employees. applications for the much-needed loans reopen monday but experts expect that massive sum of money to quickly run out once again as thousands of businesses who were shut out the first time now find themselves in desperate competition with each other. >> we don't necessarily have high hope it's will happen but we keep our fingers crossed every day. >> reporter: while so many large businesses are in dire need of the money to stay afloat, a number of large companies, even some public tladed, have come under fire for taking the loans meant for small businesses. at least a dozen companies decided to return that money totaling more than $170 million. house speaker nancy pelosi is responding to comments from some governors who say congress

needs to help states more with funding during this pandemic. >> gavin newsom, so spectacular, my mayor, every state and local have done their jobs magnificently. they should be impatient. their impatience will help us get an even bigger number and that goes for republican governors too. governor hogan of maryland has been spectacular in all of this. it's many governors, many mayors, bipartisan, for us to get the largest amount. >> speaker pelosi said congress, quote, maybe the most of it when it came to the latest relief bill that was passed last week to replenish the paycheck protection program that ran out ten days ago. what are the next phases of reopening for califonia? i spoke one on one this week with one of the leading experts who helped develop the plan states are using to safely reopen. dr. mark mcclellan are one of the authors for the roadmap to reopening. >> reporter: to understand what's ahead in the battle

against coronavirus, there's no one better to speak with than dr. mark mcclellan, expert and one of the directors in the roadmap to reopening. >> we wanted to lay out a clear path for effectively getting back towards a new normal as we live with this virus. >> reporter: there are four phases to reopen, phase one be, the phase we're in now, slowing the spread. phase two, gradual reopening state by state we hope to get to soon. >> reporter: when you say pretty soon? >> matter of weeks, yeah. not far off at all. it's checking some of the key boxes. >> reporter: the key boxes are the navigators be governor newson has been talking about, sustained decreases for 14 days and ability to do widespread testing and contact tracing.gai to stage two and when we get there, life will be different. wearing face coverings,

continuing handwashing and continue social distancing measures. >> you're not going to sit as close to other people in a restaurant or movie theater. you will probably see work hours that are staggered >> reporter: what about group sizes? >> maybe in the beginning groups of four, six. maybe ten. maybe as time goes on, maybe larger groups. again, still trying to be careful about keeping some distance is probably not going to be the time of handshakes and hugs but more waves. >> reporter: when does life start getting back to normal? that is more likely phase three when we have an established vaccine. and then prepare for the next pandemic. >> hopefully that will come soon but it's still way off from this standpoint. >> we asked about new strategy for california and him saying this week there's no date for reopening. dr. mcclellan prepared it to fighting a war saying it's

better to focus on milestones you're on your way to hitting the victory as well as setting arbitrary dates and hoping for the best. still, he believes california is likely a few weeks away from beginning the next phase. new this morning b.a.r.t. ordered 300,000 masks to hand out to anyone not having one to ride the trains. it will be a mix of surgi and hole made masks. last week b.a.r.t. passed a law requiring all riders to wear a mask. and they will be handed over by officers that are assigned trained to interact with passengers. zoom video conferencing exploded with stay-at-home orders and now facebook is stepping in to compete. it's rolling out a ssenrooms to host rooms up to 50 people. zoom allows 100 but poses a 40-minute time limit for nonzoom users. there will be no time limit for

announced his retirement after 14 seasons. chris has more. >> hi, everybody, chris alvarez working from home. what a great weekend on nfl coverage. you saw it all right here on abc7. there will be changes in san francisco. joe staley is calling his career. he made it official saturday night. an anchor on the offensive line for the 49ers, joe staley started 181 regular season games, added another 11 playoff games including two super bowl runs. staley was also named a pro football all-decade team member from the seasons 2011 and 2019. he wrote a letter and thanked the entire organization, his family and 49er faithful. in that letter he said he leaves the game with his head held high and gave his entire all to the game. he now turns his attention to his daughters. and george kittle had an emotional message for staley -- >> you always knew the right thing to say.

half moon bay still gray as well as santa cruz, 70s on the way. when it gets this low, it begins to scour out or it should in the next hour or two. 65 by the delta, winds switched around to the southwest through the delta. that will help in the fternoon where temperatures should be in the low 80s. oking at temperatures not as warm today. more in line with a little above average but where they should be this time of year, last weekend of april. as we look at the trend for the week ahead, we talked about one warm day this week, really warm. and that's going to be obviously on tuesday. 80 today, low 80s tomorrow, mid-maybe upper 80s on tuesday and quickly we cool off behind it. the cooling trend looks to continue into next weekend. so waking one more clouds and

fog, even reaching the valleys by the middle to late next week. but not today. with the cloud kearing the coast, it will be a clear evening and partly cloudy skies as the fog makes its way from the peninsula to the north bay. perhaps locally across the bay but quick burnoff for monday setting up along the san mateo coast for another nice afternoon. today, 78 san jose, 77 coup e cupertino. numbers in the low 70s on the peninsula with the westerly winds. north bay will feel a little better with 81 in santa rosa, 78 novato. low 70s in berkeley. how about mid-70s in union city. that's about 6 degrees cooler. and you head inland, you notice the lighter shades, upper 70s, low 80s as you get up towards the delta. tonight the fog is back, patchy across the bay. accuweather forecast cooler this
