let's take a live look at santa cruz where residents say people have been flocking to the beach to enjoy the weekend weather. there are signs that many of us are staying home less. >> abc7 news reporter cornell bernard is in sausalito. cornell have, you seen a lot of people out today? >> yeah, eric and deion, lots of people out and about today. that's something the city really does not want, especially if you don't live here. they're trying to avoid crowds. but some experts worry that quarantine fatigue is setting i. >> i think everybody is anxious to go out. >> a gorgeous sunday afternoon on the sauce tiit low waterfront, and for many it was too hard to stay home. >> a loft cabin fever. >> reporter: david and carolyn came from napa for a quarantine break. >> we came down to get some pressure air and social distance from everybody, and just enjoy life. >> the city of sausalito has tried to keep nonlocals away. signs have been posted, and

starting this weekend, every single city parking lot is closed to discourage day trippers. yet people keep showing up. >> you can't go to work right now. it's against the law. but people are going on vacation. >> reporter: ken collins showed this video in santa cruz. parked cars lined up for more than a mile near the beach. because beach parking lots are now off limits. >> you couldn't find a parking spot if you wanted. i've never seen it this crowded, fourth of july, labor day, christmas. >> seens like this. crowded beaches with little social distancing. >> beaches are full of people, and i don't think it's right. >> staying at home is just not easy. i think people are getting a look at quarantine kwat teague. >> reporter: university of maryland professor is conducting a study tracking smartphone data which shows a disturbing trend. for the first time since the stay at home orders, many americans are staying home less. >> that's a shift in momentum which is really not helping in

terms of fighting the virus. >> the bowens say they'll stay home as long as it takes. >> if that's what it takes to keep the world safe, then yes, let us do what we need to do. but at the same time, we should be able to go out and subdistance. >> that university of maryland study says over the past two days, the number of californians staying home went from 40% to 30%. we are told the numbers here in the bay area are much better. this park remains open, but police urge folks to stay home if you can. live in sausalito, cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> all right, cornell, many thanks. now the number of confirmed cases of covid-19 topped 7600 this weekend. santa clara county reported its 100th death, the most in the bay area. another person has tested positive for the coronavirus at laguna honda hospital, now at 21 cases. at least 24 are infected at casa

quezada, supportive housing in san francisco's mission district. the city is testing vulnerable residents and relocating others. now parts of sonoma state university are being used to house coronavirus patients or those who are being tested and salesforce ceo benioff announced today he is hoping employees are back to work on june 1. he included a long list of goals and requirements. the u.s. is closing in on one million confirmed cases of covid-19, and more than 54,000 deaths. but some states are already starting to reopen. abc7 news reporter rachel scott has details. >> the severity of the covid-19 pandemic and how to move forward varies greatly from state to state. georgia is one of the first states to begin reopening, allowiallow ing gyms and salons to open friday. on monday, montana and mississippi will allow retailers to operate with social distancing measures in place. tennessee restaurants will be allowed to open at 50% capacity.

colorado will allow personal services like dog grooming and personal training. but in the midwest an illinois food processing plant has been shut down by the illinois county health department. michigan's governor has extended her stay-at-home orders through may 15th and has issued safety allowances to protect consumers. >> no one wants a second wave. it would be devastating for the health of our people and our economy. so we have to be really smart. >> in maryland, where there have been more than 18,000 cases and more than 800 deaths, the governor has laid out a three-phase plan to reopen his state's economy. >> everything is going to be based on the numbers and the science. >> among the things looked at the state of hospitalization. >> must be in decline for 14 days. >> many experts believe the key to reopening will be testing. new york's governor andrew cuomo says hi state is now

compulsively, obsessively focused on testing, signing an executive order saturday, allowing all first responder, health care workers and essential workers to get test food interest virus. new york also rolling out antibody testing for front line workers at four hospital, as well as transit workers and police officers. the hope is that those exposed to the virus may have developed antibodies and possible immunity. >> there is a reasonable assumption that when you have an antibody that you are protected against reinfection. but that has not been proven for this particular virus. >> rachel scott, abc news, washington. house speaker nancy pelosi is responding to comments from governors who say congress needs to do more to help states with funding during this pandemic. >> gavin newsom is so spectacular, mayor breed, state and local have done their jobs magnificently. they should be impatient their impatience will help us get an even bigger number.

that goes for republican governors too. governor hogan of maryland has been particular in all of this. it's many governors, many mayors, bipartisan for us to get the largest amount. >> today on cnn's state of the union, pelosi said congress, quote, made the most of it when it comes to the latest relief bill. it passed last week and will replenish the paycheck protection program which ran out of funding ten days ago. bart may start handing out masks to riders. the transit reports the agency has ordered more than 300,000 for its employees. once the workers are taken care of, bart will then consider distributing masks to people on the trains and stations. riders are required to wear face covers when on trains. it's up to police to enforce the rules. the department is a looking into buying its own supply of masks. today's project thanks story comes from the east bay. the family that owns an east oakland cafe spent the day

handing out face masks to members of the community. with the cafe closed, owners turned their parking lot into a free face mask distribution site this afternoon. the family purchased 21,000 masks and have handed them out to anyone who needs them. and the good vibes continue. law enforcement and firefighters from all around the east bay express their gratitude to health care work theirs afternoon. dozens of first responders line the front doors of contra costa regional medical center to give medical staff there a big round of applause during the sft change.'s goi o y, whi ieo cing recognizing each other, working together, supporting each other. so it's very heartening to see. >> now six of these appreciation events have been organized throughout contra costa county so far to thank nurses and

a member of the vallejo planning commission seen tossing a cat and drinking during a meeting has resigned. the meeting was seen on monday on zoom. chris platzer, highlighted emailed the herald. he announced he was stepping down immediately and apologized for his actions. the city council was going to take up a resolution to remove him. nieman marcus is expected to file for bankruptcy. the company's stores are closed, and most of its 14,000 workers furloughed because of the coronavirus. just days ago, nieman marcus missed an interest payment on bonds, and that means its bondholder could sue and force the company into bankruptcy. nieman marcus would be the first major u.s. retailer to file for began. in the north bay, a napa valley winery is returning just more than a million dollars it received from the federal government. the owner of costello di omarosa tells the chronicle that returning the money from the

the sheriff's office says a deputy spotted his car, and then tried to pull him over. investigators say nylander brandished a gun before he was shot on friday near the napa airport. happening now, lots of progress being made on the highway 101 deck replacement at alp eman boulevard. they'll shift one lane of traffic to the northbound side. that will allow crews to begin on the other overpass deck. traffic will be rerouted off the highway from 9:00 tonight until 6:00 tomorrow morning when lanes will be restriped for the new traemp traffic configuration. construction is supposed to finish in early may. an online car company gave customers a permanent disinfecting for free today. abc7 news was in south san francisco where a team of shift members were on hand as they applied perma safe, an anti-microbial disinfectant that is nontoxic and hypoallergenic.

the bay area in august to tape segments at famous locations. this week all the contestants are from the bay area, and we wish them all good luck. the "wheel of fortune" great american cities series features san francisco and the bay area every night at 7:30. it's after "jeopardy!" which airs right after abc7 news at 6:00. all right. and it looks so beautiful behind them, if the golden gate bridge, what can we expect for our forecast? drew tuma coming to us live from his home. hey, drew. >> hi, guys. we're going find that sunshine is pretty consistent over the next couple of days. but those temperatures were still on that roller coaster ride. we felt that cooler weather arrive today. live doppler 7, along with satellite showing you mainly clear skies across much of the bay area. a little patchy fog right now along the coastline. but our emeryville camera, you can see outside a live look pointed towards san francisco. it's nothing but sunshine from this advantage point. blue skies and is a very comfortable evening on tap across much of the region. it is breezy, though.

and those winds really help to usher in that cooler end to the weekend today. we're gusting to 25 miles per hour in the city right now. 26 in san mateo. and then onshore breeze coming off the cool ocean water really did help. it's 5 to 10 degrees cooler today compared to yesterday. so right now we've been stuck in the 50s all day in the city. only 59 right now. 70 in san jose, though. 65 in oakland with a bit of a breeze. we're at 80, though, in brentwood. we're not really getting that breeze from our marine layer. 75 in santa rosa and vallejo cooled off to 66 degrees. so future weather hour by hour, that fog coming right up against our coastline overnight tonight, and it will sit there for the first half of our day tomorrow, and that's really going help to keep those comfortable temperatures in check for another day. so overnight tonight we'll be in the upper 40s to mid-50s over the next 12 hours. and a closer look at our highs on our monday. we'll start in the south bay. 77 and sunny in san jose

tomorrow. 80 in gilroy. about 75 the high for sunnyvale and cupertino. along the peninsula, cool and foggy for pacifica, 58. 69 for redwood city. 73 that high in mountain view. downtown san francisco will have that morning fog breaking for afternoon sunshine. 64 downtown. cooler along the coast. daly city at 59, and we'll be breezy again. in the north bay, high thin cirrus clouds in the afternoon. otherwise it's warm in calistoga. 76 novato. 71 in vallejo. 69 tomorrow in hayward for the east bay. 73 for fremont. and inland we're int the upper 70s to lower 80s. 82 in antioch. 77 the high in san ramon. across the state, though, by tuesday, we're going to feel warmer weather move right back on. look at l.a. on tuesday, hitting 90 degrees. 91 in fresno. even in san francisco we'll hit 71. but away from the coast, we'll be well into the 80s if not close to 90 degrees. the good news, if you're not a
