warmer weather moves back in. we'll show you when and how hot we get in the accu-weather forecast. >> testing continues in san francisco's mission district. the goal is 5,000 by tuesday but today, they saw a decline. >> tonight, san francisco doctors are firing back as many are pushing for the state to reopen. abc 7 news starts right now. as the bay area enters week seven of shelter in place, all of california remains under the order indefinitely. doctors up and down the state are debating the best course of action for what is next. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. a video of two bakersfield doctors pushing for the state to reopen asap has gone viral. the doctors are saying are saying not so fast.

jr stone is live in the newsroom with details tonight. >> reporter: eric, there is a serious debate about when to open up. right now, these two doctors from the bakesfield area say they have compiled their own statistics after testing more than 5,000 people. >> i say do we need to still shelter in place? our answer is emphatically no. >> that from dr. dan erickson and dr. artin massihi who own one of the largest care facilities in the bay area. and both want governor newsom to lift the stay-at-home order. others say not so fast. >> what we're trying to do is prevent people from dying. >> reporter: dr. george rutherford is part of the ucsf health system and says it is too soon. >> the early projections were 44,000 deaths in the bay area. there have been 210 so far.

so i think we're doing pretty damn good. >> reporter: erickson and masihi's thoughts on the reopen have taken off online with millions of hits and thousands of likes. abc 7 special correspondent dr. alo pa tell cautions about using data from one location. >> it is not scientifically sound, to take one population, from one county, extrapolate the data and try to make a claim based on our national picture, or even the rest of the state. >> erickson and masihi say the numbers show that covid is similar to the flu. something that experts here in the bay strongly disagree with. saying the mortality rate could be 30 times worse. >> if you see low number, we want to keep those numbers low. . so as much as it sucks, as difficult as it is, we have to make sure that we are doing everything we can until we know for a fact it is safe to loosen the restrictions. >> the cases are still going up. in case anybody hadn't noticed.

and the mortality rates, the death, the number of deaths are going up, california had the largest number of deaths in a single day, two days ago. now, how that is reassuring everybody, and wanting to, you know, reverse what's been so successful, so far, i don't know. >> reporter: now we did reach out to governor newsom's office about what these two doctors are saying. at this point, we have not heard back. as to a timetable, on starting to reopen, dr. rutherford says he could see possibly mid may, and dr. patel says key see getting things in motion in late may to early june. eric, now back to you. >> jr, thank you very much. now, just ahead, we could be expecting weeks more of the shelter in place order but there are signs that many of us are staying home less. the experts call it quarantine fatigue. which could be a disturbing trend in the midst of this covid-19 pandemic. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard explains.

>> i think everyone is anxious to go out. >> reporter: a gorgeous sunday afternoon on the sausalito water front and for many, it was too hard to stay home. >> a lot of cabin fever. >> reporter: david and carolyn bowen came from napa for a quarantine break. >> we came down here to get fresh air and social distance from everybody. and just enjoy life. >> reporter: the city of sausalito has tried to keep nonlocals away during the shelter in place order. signs have been posted. and starting this weekend, every single city parking lot is closed to discourage day trippers yet people keep showing up. >> you can't go to work right now. it's against the law. but people are going on vacation. >> this video was shared in santa cruz. parked cars lined up for more than a mile near the beach because beach parking lots are now offlimits. >> you couldn't find a parking spot if you wanted to. i have never seen it this crowded on the fourth of july, memorial day, labor day, christmas. >> margarita was in southern california for business yesterday and saw scenes like this. crowded beaches. with little social distancing.

>> the beaches are full of people. i don't think it's right. >> stay at home, it is just not easy. i think people are getting quarantine fatigue. >> reporter: the university of maryland professor lei zong is tracking a study with smartphone data which shows a disturbing trend, for the first time since stay at ho-at-home orders, many americans are staying home less. >> it is a shift of momentum that is not helping in terms of fighting the virus. >> reporter: the bowens say they will stay home as long as it takes. >> if that's what it takes to keep the world safe, then yes, let's do what we need to do but at the same time, we should be able to go out and self distance. >> reporter: that university of maryland study says over the past two days the number of californians staying home went from 40% to 30%. we're told the numbers here in the bay area are much better when it comes to compliance. sausalito says this park remains open, but police are urging folks, to stay home if you can.

abc news. >> the number of confirmed coronavirus infections has jumped to more than 7600 across the bay area. there are now 262 deaths. marin county reported a dozen new cases this evening. sonoma county also reported a handful of new infections. santa clara county hit a grim marker this morning. another covid-19-related death in that hard hit community, has put the county's death toll at 100. the most of the ten counties you see on our map. we're also keeping track of confirmed cases in lake and mendocino counties for our viewers there. lake county is reporting six case, mendocino county is reporting 11 cases, neither county has reported a fatality. well, today is day two of coronavirus testing, in san francisco's mission district. the goal is to test over 5,000 people by tuesday. yesterday, 950 were tested but today that number could climb. abc 7 news reporter luz pena looks into the possible reasons

w why. >> reporter: the mission districts the zip code with the highest number of covid-19 cases in san francisco. >> we tend to address some of these disparities by really expanding testing. >> the ucsf doctor is part of one of three test sites in this neighborhood. >> the goal of the study is to understand the underlying epidemiology or transmission of covid-19. not just in the hospitals who is coming in sick but out in the communities. >> reporter: the goal is to test over 5,000 people by tuesday. with bringing the hospital test sites to parks in the community. like this one workers all got tested. francisco sha cha vez is one of them who admitted if it wasn't for this test site he wouldn't have gone to a hospital. >> yesterday, a total of 950 people got tested. today, that number declined.

approximately 700 showed up to get tested. a lower number than anticipated. >> why do you think that less people are showing up today to get tested? >> it's probably a multitude of things. i think a little bit is fear. i definitely would acknowledge that there's been people that i've spoken to, and in our community, that you know, are essential worker, they're the bread earner of their household, and they're scared to know if they have covid. >> now the group of volunteers are ramping up that your outreach. >> what we decided to do late yesterday is do what we would say is a fifth round of outreach. >> in hopes by tuesday they reach their 5,000 goal. in san francisco, luz pena, abc 7 news. two new testing sites are set to open tomorrow, in the bay area. the first serves san francisco residents, on seventh and brannen by appointment only. the other is a drive through testing service at the almeda county fair grounds in pleasanton that serves residents

new at 11:00, a photographer captured stunning photos of a wedding in san francisco's saint ago nashs church this weekend, while the bride walked down the aisle, holding her father's hand, the photos are in the pews for live streaming services and they agreed to live stream for the couple's family, and the couple says they debated what to do with the wedding but they didn't want to wait to start their lives together. the project thanks story comes from the east bay. a family that owns the east oakland cafe spent the day handing out thousands of fabric face masks to members of their community. theyteational boulevard and with it closed they turned their site into a free distribution mask

site, and they purchased 21,000 masks and are handing them out to anyone who needs one. >> law enforcement and firefighters from all around the east bay expressed their gratitude to health care workers this afternoon. dozens of first responders lined the front doors of contra costa county regional medical center to give medical staff a big round of applause during shift change. >> i think it's reflective of what is going on across our whole community, which is really people coming together, recognizing each other, and working together, supporting each other. it is very heartening to see. >> six of these appreciation events have been organized throughout contra costa county so far to thank nurses, doctors, and hospital staff for their tireless work during the coronavirus pandemic. we invite you to join better bay area project banks and share your gratitude for everyone on the front lines of the covid-19 battle. use the #betterbayarea to show us how you're saying thank you

>> life goes on. so does the weather. meteorologist drew tuma. yes, it really does, eric. and what we're going to find over the next couple of days, warmer weather will make a comeback. after today, where we found a nice on-shore flow, kind of knocking our temperatures down, compared to yesterday. so live doppler 7, along with satellite right now, is showing you most areas are still dealing with clear skies, a couple of high clouds. north of cloverdale and ukiah. but all in all, it is a pretty quiet night out there. still breezy in the city right now. the wind at 36 miles per hour. breezy through the delta. gusting to 20 miles an hour. and the wind coming off that cool ocean water that is bringing the cooler temperatures in the already down to 46 in half moon bay.

with that cool breeze. and 64 in the city. 57 in oakland. and it is currently 60 though in san jose. 61 in santa rosa. and brentwood, still pretty mild coming in with a temperature of 68 degrees. so we'll take a look at future weather. plan on your monday for you, early tomorrow morning, the fog, the marine layer, thanks to the onshore wind, it will make a comeback to our coast and linger there for much of the day. it is really just an indication of the seasonable temperatures, that will be in check tomorrow, before they really warm up here on tuesday. so overnight tonight, we'll see temperatures continue to drop into the 50s. a couple of spots, half moon bay, napa, ukiah, holding in the upper 40s for starting temperatures tomorrow morning. a closer look at highs on our monday. temperature-wise, in the south bay, mainly in the mid 70s to lower 80s. and 77 the high in san jose. and 80 in morgan hill. 76 the high in cupertino. along the peninsula, the fog along the coast, stuck in the

50s, 59 for half moon bay, and 69 and sunny in redwood city. and 73 for mountain view. downtown san francisco, the morning fog will slowly break for afternoon sun. 64 the high in the city. 59 though for daily city. breezy along the coast as well. the north bay, you will find some high clouds from time to time. temperature right around 80 in sonoma. and 71 in vallejo. and 66 though in sausalito. and 79 in santa rosa. and east bay, 69. inland, it's warm in the upper 70s to lower 80s. about 80 in livermore. 77 the high in san ramon. over california, you can see tuesday, warmth really takes hold. from reading, to fresno, to l.a. on tuesday, it will surge into the 90s. even in san francisco, it will be a warm afternoon, in the 70s and around the bay, on tuesday, our warmest spot will be in the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. so it's just one day of some

heat in the bay. but still, a very warm day tuesday afternoon. here is the accu-weather seven-day forecast. sunny tomorrow. temperatures not too bad. but by tuesday, they spike very quickly. warm to hot across the region. much cooler air rushes in here midweek on wednesday. it stays with us. thursday, friday, into the upcoming weekend, temperatures in the 60s and 70s. a lot of sunshine in the afternoon. >> drew, thank you very much. still ahead on abc 7 news at 11:00, two bay area singers showed the judges what they have to offer on a first of its kind episode of "american idol." how they faired after making it into the top 20, next.

the 49ers were six and a half minutes away from winning the super bowl. not long after that loss, george called this season the legendary revenge tour, and the 49ers were aggressive and active in the nfl draft. to combat the loss of joe staly, the 49ers got trent williams, the washington seven-time pro bowl tackle and used the first round picks on a first round tackle out of south carolina and wide receiver out of arizona state. here's kyle shanahan and john lynch on the team's thought process. >> we're trying to build it the right way and never make bad decisions over the long haul but we feel we should have won the super bowl last year and we want an opportunity to win it again so every decision we made was also with how do we help this organization for the future, and still feel like we're in a position to be the same team if not better this year that we were last year. ek a better football team.s and that is really exciting. we were very happy, we were going to be working, we knew it

welcome back. this week, you're going to see some states across the country starting to lift their stay at home restrictions. georgia, south carolina, and tennessee are just some of the places where businesses will be allowed to open, but governors elsewhere are not joining in, saying there is an increased need for coronavirus testing, before shelter in place orders are eased. here's abc news reporter andrew denver with details. >> reporter: as the pressure to reopen the country grow, many

experts believe the key to doing so safely will be testing. new york's governor cuomo says his state is obsessively focused on testing, and has announced plans to reopen in phases. >> nobody is giving anybody a day here. but short-term, the numbers are on the decline. everything we have done is working. the rates are all dropping. >> reporter: fema now working with officials in new york city to test 120,000 city employees for coronavirus antibodies. similar antibody tests under way in los angeles and in boston. diagnostic covid-19 tests are also popping up all over the country. including this site in iowa, to test first responders. the covid tracking project says saturday, 300,000 covid-19 tests were conducted, a u.s. one-day record, bringing the country's total above five million. >> labs are learning now how to

bring all of those platforms up, to hopefully double and increase our testing ability across the country. >> georgia has already begun allowing some businesses to start opening. including salons and gyms. georgia, not alone. south carolina and oklahoma lifting their orders already. and starting monday, some businesses will reopen in arkansas, colorado, mississippi, and montana. tennessee's orders expire on thursday, but the state is allowing some businesses to reopen monday. ohio and texas lifting some restrictions on thursday. but some governors are apprehensive. >> i want to get our economy back hope sust jjust as soon ase in a safe way. >> in michigan, some restrictions have been eased allowing for recreational activities. >> we know it could be devastate fourth our peop fourth, for our economy and for our people and we need to be

smart as we reengage. >> governor whitmer continued the stay-at-home order until may 15th. we're going to be looking at an unemployment rate that approaches rates that we saw during the great depression. during the great recession, remember, that was the financial crisis around 2008, that we lost 8.7 million jobs in the whole thing. right now, we're losing that many jobs about every ten days. >> the jobless rate during the great depression was about 25%. then it took about ten months for new unemployment claims to reach the same level as they have now. and it's been just about a month. in the north bay, at a napa valley winery, returning just more than a million is referred from the federal government. the owner of casstello de de dee amero amerossa says the return is the

right thing to do after the funding ran out as many are in greater need. what will the work force look like post-pandemic? with social distancing becoming the new normal the head of the real estate firm cushman and wakefield says expect desks to be further apart, elevators may have spots telling people where to stand and something that could be a common site, plexiglass. >> it depends on the furniture but you will see an awful lot of plexiglass in the country very, very soon. >> new floor markings could help people from coming from within six feet of each other when they walk through the office. a member of the vallejo planning commission seen tossing a cat during a meeting has resigned. the meeting was held on monday over zoom and chris, who was highlighted, emailed the vallejo times herald, he reports he announced he was stepping down immediately and apologized for his actions. the city council was going to take up a resolution to remove

him. >> happening now, the highway 101 deck replacement project in san francisco is entering the next phase and drivers who need to use the freeway should expect big changes in the morning. right now, all lanes on 101 are closed. and southbound traffic was eeking by earlier today in one lane. now those vehicles are being taken off the freeway. cement is curing on the northbound side of the highway. overnight, caltrans will redirect southbound traffic on the completed northbound lanes, past the construction area. it's going to require drivers to take an s-10, and work crews will begin demolishing the southbound deck, and the project should be done in early may. many rites of passage are being put on hold because of the shelter in place orders but one high school is finding ways for students to celebrate prom without stepping outside their home. we have a look at the school's temporary solution. >> are you ready to rumble?

>> it's a prom like no other in the history of sunnyside high school in fresno. no ticket is needed. no dress code is enforced. instead, students are encouraged to stay home, and attend virtually. >> i brought my mom to prom. >> like all high schools across the state, covid-19 has forced sunnyside to close its campus, postponing the prom. but that didn't sit well with staff members. >> it's a sense of loss for the seniors, in a lot of ways the seniors are grieving. >> and they wanted to give an escape from the pandemic and decided to take the formal event online via instagram. to party is complete without music. >> and administrators reached out to three djs, sunnyside high school alums, dj rossski was scheduled to work before the outbreak. the campus closures changed the plans. but didn't keep her from her gig. >> i decided to kind of come with more of the dance pop music

so the kids can remember some of those familiar songs. >> the business has taken a major hit. she finds it therapeutic sharing her love of music with her fellow wildcats. >> we're still trying our best to do what we can, and sunnyside is a great example of that. >> the staff was able to organize the event within 24 hours. raising more than $1,000 for prizes, and give-aways. >> we're going to give out $100 gift card. >> they say there is no substitute for an in person prom, and they still plan to hold one as soon as it's safe. >> the principal's address to the senior class literally told the girls to save that dress. >> in fresno, nbc 30 action news. >> here at abc 7, we're honoring the class of 2020. jack estes is graduate danville, jack was nominate bid a pat member who says jack has been an
