start to the day. as we look from the exploratorium camera at pier 15 50 to 52 is our spread at 7:00. cooler places in our deeper valley and 60 at the coast today because of those breezes and 70 to 72 at the bay and 75 to 78 at 4:00 and little bit above average and 67 to 71. going to be a gorgeous evening. here's reggie. >> all right, mike, thank you. governor newsom said that one of the keys to easing shelter at home orders is more testing for coronavirus. and today a new testing site is opening up. this time in the east bay at the alameda county fairgrounds. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live with who this could help. amy? >> hi, reggie. this opens at 9:00 this morning and i want to let everyone know there is not a line of people here yet. there is no one here yet. different from when the centers were opening weeks ago. we'd see people lining up well before it opened. if you're thinking of coming here, don't panic. there is no line at this point.

alameda county fairgrounds people who live in livermore, dublin and pleasanton and they have to meet one of these requirements. here's a list they are looking for. people with a fever, shortness of breath and recent exposure to a coronavirus patient and other chronic diseases and people over the age of 65, women who are currently or recently have been pregnant and people who are homeless. this is being put on my stanford health care system along with the cities. those three cities that i mentioned. they did have 150 tests available per day or 750 for the week and they say your results will come back pretty quickly within three days. we are at gate 12 at the alameda county fairgrounds. again, it opens at 9:00 this morning and when they run out of tests for the day, they say they will post a sign here at the gate letting everyone know. no appointment is needed. and you don't need a doctor's note. so you can just come on in if you meet one of those

requirements. reporting live in pleasanton, this is an area with one of the highest infection rates in san francisco. the tests are part of a larger ucsf study to learn more about the virus and how it affects people of different neighborhoods or ethnic makeups. we learned on saturday 24 people tested positive at the single room occupancy hotel in the mission. many of those residents speak spanish and have underlying health conditions. week seven of sheltering in place in the bay area and people are experiencing what experts call quarantine fatigue. the warm weather over the weekend wads too good for people to pass up. spotted a lot of people in the sausalito water front and the beaches in santa cruz were pretty close and closed parking lots didn't stop people from parking further away from the beach. people were willing to walk just

to be outside. >> you couldn't find a parking spot if you wanted to. i have never seen it this crowded on labor day, fourth of july, christmas. a professor at the university of maryland is concthat states began implementing stay-at-home orders, americans are staying home less and may have an impact on our infection numbers in the weeks ahead. help for small businesses is on the way. jobina fortson is at the live desk with the program that has more funding starting today. jobina? >> yeah, kumasi, good morning. the paycheck program has been restored thanks to the package congress approved last week. what this does is replenish the program with $320 billion. the small business administration will resume taking applications at 7:30 this morning. small businesses can apply for loans. that will be forgiven if they maintain their payroll. the paycheck protection program

initially ran out of funding earlier this month. about two weeks after the program launched with $349 billion. many businesses, of course, as we know, have had to stop operations due to the coronavirus pandemic. they are relying on this money to keep their businesses alive. reggie, i'll send it over to you. today, bri pminist boris jo. you see him here arriving at downing street just a few weeks after being in the icu for coronavirus. at one point johnson authorized the british foreign secretary to take over as prime minister. johnson is returning to work today after being discharged from the hospital two weeks ago. hospital of minnesota senator amy klobuchar says he is one of the first to donate his plasma for research. he is donating to the mayo clinic after recently recovering. it has shown promise in helping others fight the virus. but this morning senator

klobuchar joking that her husband is showing one lingering symptoms. >> he can't clean the basement because there is a lot of dust. that's the one thing. >> that minnesota humor. a similar plasma study just started at ucsf this weekend and they hope it works based on other infectious disease but they don't know for sure. if you qualify, you can donate at any blood bank if you show you haven't had symptoms for 28 days. coronavirus survivors are sharing their path to recovery. some had setbacks after being discharged from the hospital. >> reporter: as life starts to get back to normal, many people are adjusting to their new lives after having had the virus, but it's clear people are recovering differently. chicago nurse daniel ortiz tested positive himself. >> i woke up and i was like in sweat. but i felt really cold. >> reporter: in early april

after his symptoms subsided and per cdc guidelines, he returned to work. but his cough returned and he was tested again one result negative and the latest test positive. >> we're right back at square one. i had it. is there a chance i could get reinfected? maybe. >> reporter: so far 965,000 cases in the united states and nearly 110,000 have recovered. jack allard is a former all-american lacrosse player with no pre-existing conditions. he was placed in a medically induced coma one month ago after testing positive. he told u.s. lacrosse magazine he now has to learn to walk again. saying, quote, your legs don't do what you want them to do. but you put your head down and force yourself to stand up and take a couple of steps and then the next day take a few more steps. this michigan mother of three battled the virus for 40 days and says she was turned away six times before she could get a test. >> i thought at times the

hospital was sending me home just to die in my bed. >> reporter: she suffered intense flu-like symptoms for weeks all while isolated from her children. she is feeling better, but, still, has no sense of taste or smell. >> people need to be aware of how serious this is. >> when i heard 40 days. wow. obviously, that isn't what everyone is experiencing it, but you could experience it and you have no idea if that could be you. a good reminder of why we're all staying home. all right. coming up next, jobina is tracking the work that has shut down part of highway 101 in san francisco. and the change drivers are going to notice today. plus, the encouraging medical milestone in the city that is ground zero for the coronavirus pandemic. what doctors in wuhan are reporting this morning. new6:00, a call to stop flying. why some are asking the airlines to ground all flights until the

sunscreen. you'll need that if you're out exercising and stay away from the coast, if you can. here's a look at the east bay valleys. reach the low 80s this afternoon and the north bay, how about mid to upper 70s and our last spot will be the peninsula where we hit the low to mid 70s for several hours this afternoon. speaking of the peninsula, let's get an update. >> thank you, mike. i'm going to give you that update. good morning, everyone. so, the biggest thing we have going on on our roads this morning is the 101 project in san francisco. let's take a live look right there right now because we have a new change that went into effect as of 6:00 this morning. if you there on the left hand side of the screen and you see the orange cones, that is southbound traffic on the northbound side of the highway. this configuration will remain in effect for the remainder of the project. so, what they're doing here. so you understand the process. this is day four of that project. that is brand-new pavement and

on the right-hand side, that's the southbound portion of 101. and northbound traffic for the remainder of the project is going on to 280. that is all you need to know this morning, guys. >> thanks, jobina. new at 6:00, a major milestone in wuhan, china. the city that was once the epicenter of the outbreak. they discharged the last covid-19 patient from local hospitals. the 12 patients were cleared yesterday. they now have to spend 14 days in quarantine before being allowed to resume their normal lives. doctors say the number of new coronavirus cases in wuhan is dropping every day and they are closely monitoring people to avoid a second wave. that's good to hear. an international mystery this morning. where is kim jong-un. the growing rumors about the north korean leader's health, also, the

>> all news, all morning. one woman on an american airlines flight this weekend videotaped something we haven't seen in a long time. she was on a nearly full flight on saturday. she was leaving new york city going to charlotte. the woman was stunned at the lack of social distancng and was almost overwhelmed with fear because she had a middle seat. the airport at jfk was eerily empty and more and more people kept arriving at her gate to board that same flight. flight attendants are concerned about their own health and safety. they sent a letter to the department of transportation. the union wants airlines to limit nonessential travel. it also wants the federal officials to make it mandatory to wear masks in airports and on airplanes. hundreds of flight attendants have gotten sick with coronavirus. many rights of passage are being put on hold but one central valley school has found a way to celebrate prom without

setting fo setting foot outside their houses. >> are >> okay. a prom like no other in the history of sunnyside high school in fresno. staff organized a virtual prom for the students over the weekend. the school wanted to give the students an escape from the pandemic and took the event online via instagram but no party is complete without music. >> i decided to come with more of the dance, pop, electic music so kids can remember the familiar songs. >> okay, dj roeski. no substitute for an in-person prom and they still plan to have one as soon as it's safe but in the meantime, get on instagram with dj roesski and dance. >> she's got the lights set up and everything. >> she has everything they need. >> she was ready. hi, mike. >> hi, guys. yeah, that was fun.

let's talk about what's going on with our weather. here's a look at walnut creek where it is pretty sunny and 51 degrees right now. we'll jump into the accuweather highlights and a few passing high clouds. early week warming trend before more clouds and patchy fog become dominant during the overnight hours because of the sea breeze that is going to bring us cooler weather, especially this weekend when there is a slight chance of some sprinkles sunday. let's take a look at our microclimates. 75 to 80 down in the south bay with san jose at 78 degrees and 70 to 75 on the peninsula with 72 in redwood city and you can see upper 50s to near 60 along the coast. mid 60s. that is a little bit warmer than yesterday for downtown, south san francisco and sausalito. about 77 in san rafael all the way up to 82 in santa rosa and cal sto calistoga. 71 in richmond and berkeley and some of the cooler spots along with that 69 in hayward. everybody else around 72 to 74 along the east bay shore. 79 in san ramon but look at

those mid 80s around antioch and brentwood. tonight a few more clouds, especially in the southern half of the bay. and then up in the north bay, a little bit of fog trying to creep in along those coastal valleys that could reach over on 101. here's a look at the cold front passing to the north. kick up a few high clouds this afternoon and on the back side of that is this warm front and that's why we'll have even warmer temperatures tomorrow. even the coast will warm up a little bit even though the sea breeze will keep you from getting too warm. 78 to 88. that's our spread around the bay and inland. 70 to 82 for wednesday. still a little bit above average and temperatures back to average thursday and friday and below average with mainly 50s and 60s this weekend. notice this didn't really put a sign of a sprinkle on sunday. no storm impact scale or anything like that, guys. but something to keep an eye on. >> all right, thanks, mike. it is 6:19 and we are checking in with our friend ginger zee. >> yeah, she's live with a look at what is ahead on "gma"

6:23 on a monday and i want to show you what's coming up. friday looks like a really decent start to the weekend. 80s in our inland neighborhoods and mid to upper 70s there and 70s showing up around the bay itself with some upper 60s as you head towards san francisco. but look at saturday 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s are gone and by sunday almost all the 70s are wiped away. so, this weekend probably not as many people trying to get to our beaches as over the past weekend we just lived through. reggie? >> mike, thank you. developing news on the international mystery. there is growing speculation about what is happening with kim jong-un. it's been two weeks since he's been seen in public and missed some key celebrations and one celebrating the birth of his grandfather who was the founder. >> western intelligence in north

korea is so bad that we have no way to verify or to deny these rumors, but we have no idea. we can't only wait until the north koreans themselves tell us whether kim is alive or dead. >> a south korean official tells abc news they believe kim jong-un is alive and well outside of the capital. a new study says drinking coffee may help you live longer, if you brew it a certain way. according to european researchers, you have to prepare it using a filter. they say that filter will sift out substances in the coffee that increase blood cholesterols and make heart attacks and premature deaths unlikely. half a million people in norway took part in the study. researchers tracked them for over 20 years and found that one or four cups of filtered cups of coffee a day lived the longest. last night the top 20 on "american idol" performed from their houses. ♪ we can dance until we die

now your health, your safety. this is abc7 news. >> now at 6:30, week seven of sheltering in place and there is no end in sight. now two bakersfield doctors are igniting a fierce debate over what should happen next. several more states began reopening today. businesses face major restrictions and customers will see big changes. here's a live look from our east bay hills camera as we start the week. today is going to be another warm one and tomorrow gets even warmer. some areas could get close to 90. so, skies out, thighs out, but just make sure you're doing that without a lot of people around you. hi, mike. >> yes. and it's a one and done, too. tomorrow is the hottest day this week. temperatures will do a little bit of a roller coaster the rest of the week and then kind of tank over the weekend. we'll map all that out in the seven-day forecast. first, if you have to get out of the house, little breezy along

the coast and sfo and keeping us pretty clear this morning. as you can see, not a lot of cloud cover out there and cold front passing to the north and look at that northerly breeze keeping us cool but at least clear in half moon bay and 66 in san francisco and breezes pick up around the bay and keeping us in the low to mid 70s. upper 70s in the south bay and some low to mid 80s in the east bay with upper 70s to low 80s in we'll talk more about that seven-day forecast coming up. cn news of the day. most doctors agree that sheltering in place, but the video of two bakersfield doctors pushing for the state to reopen is going viral this morning. >> i say do we still need to shelter in place? our answer is emphatically no. >> doctors here in the bay area disagrooe. they say not so fast. julian glover is following the

story and has that response. >> shocking words from the couple doctors from the bakersfield area. we spoke to a couple medical experts in the bay area who emphatically disagree with what those doctors are saying. now is not the time to lift the governor's shelter-in-place orders. dr. dan erickson and dr. artin massihi getting a lot of clicks and likes online for their comments based on data from reported 5,000 coronavirus tests that they have done at their systems of urgent care facili facilitifacilit facilities and that suggests a large portion of the state's population is already infected with the coronavirus. but doctors we spoke to say it's not scientifically sound to use the numbers from one slice of life, one county too, make a case for reopening the entire state of california. >> if you see low numbers, we want to keep those numbers low. and, so, as much as it sucks and as difficult as it is, we have

to make sure that we're still doing everything we can until we know for a fact that it's safe to loosen the restrictions. >> doctors we spoke to like abc7 news correspondent dr. patel argued what we are doing right now, sheltering in place and flattening the curve is what we need to continue doing so. as far as when things will reopen, we know that is the question on everyone's mind. dr. patel said he can see things beginning to s lifted by late l early june. soon, but not now. reporting live this morning, julian glover, abc7 news. happening today, a key day to watch for some states across the country to start to reopen their economy and which places are returning to so-called normal including, jobina, a place i know, you know well. >> yes. my hometown, georgia is right at

the forefront of this, reggie. you and i both lived in atlanta, i grew up there. that is certainly a battle in that city for sure because the mayor is definitely on the opposite side of the governor brian kemp. i'll get to that in a moment. a handful of governors who are pushing forward to get back to regular life this week. so, on friday georgia reopened gyms, also nail salons, hair salons, you name it and this morning restaurants will be back to dine-in eating. south carolina and oklahoma have already eased their orders. some businesses reopen today in arkansas, colorado, mississippi, montana and tennessee. ohio lift restrictions this week and texas governor greg abbott will announce plans tomorrow for ending his statewide orders but other governors here in california and michigan say it's important to stay hunkered down. >> we know no one wants a second wave. it would be devastating for the health of our people and our economy. we have to be really smart as we

reengage. >> we saw the bright weather this weekend and it led to packed beaches and parks up and down california this weekend. and like here in the bay area, santa cruz and in orange county. it will be inest therintrustingw governor newsom responds to all of this during his next press briefing. back to you. >> we'll be looking for that. a popular drug to treat heartburn is being used as a possible treatment for coronavirus. you probably won't recognize this name, famotidine but you will recognize pepcid. researchers in new york have been treating covid-19 patients with the drug in a clinical trial and they expect to have data showing its effectiveness in a few weeks. doctors in china also testing this drug and they say it benefit coronavirus patients. nancy pelosi is officially endorsing former vice prsident joe biden. he says he is the best leader to

committee via video conferencing this morning and talk about a somber new budget report how a dropoff in funding might be dependent on how long the crisis continues. that meeting is set to start at 10:00 this morning. a member of the vallejo planning commission seen tossing a cat and drinking during a meeting has resigned. the meeting was held last monday over zoom. he is highlighted in this video and heard making derogatory remarks after the meeting was over. he told the paper in an e-mail he was stepping down immediately. he apologized for his actions. the city council was going to take up a resolution to remove him tomorrow. b.a.r.t. may start handing out masks to riders. the transit agency has ordered more than 300,000 for its employees and then once the workers are taken care of, b.a.r.t. will consider distributing masks to riders. everyone is required to wear face coverings on public transportation but up to b.a.r.t. to enforce these rules.

afternoon and those breezes from the northwest that will be crossing the bay bay bridge and the dumbarton bridge and making it quite choppy out there on the water for the commute. let's take a look at our 12-hour planner. we'll start for the north bay where we could jump from 50 at 7:00 and hanging around 80 for the better part of the afternoon hours right around 78 to 80. 73 very comfortable at 7:00. high clouds and sunshine in the east bay. we jump from 52 at 7:00 to about 69 at noon to low to mid 70s this afternoon. and for san francisco, we'll make a run out of the 60s around 11:00 and hang out in the upper 60s during the afternoon hours. also, mostly sunny and quite brisk here. that's a look at our forecast for now. let's get over to jobina. >> thank you, mike. good morning, everyone. so, the main thing that is happening on our roads right now, construction. there's a lot of it. we'll start, though, with a quick look at our 880 at the coliseum camera in oakland here. you can see those conditions. earlier this morning i was

reporting that abc7 news contributor and insider phil was traffic increased by 5% and you can see traffic is moving and certainly people out there this morning. and now we'll scoot over to san francisco and the 101 alemany project and this is a live camera courtesy of cal trans this morning. what you're seeing on the left-hand side of your screen, you might be confused. that is the northbound lane but southbound traffic on the northbound lane. they are on the brand-new deck that was all done this weekend. so, you know, the construction is on time. that's a good thing. this configuration will remain in effect for the remainder of the project and northbound traffic will be diverted on to 280 while this wrap this all up should take a total of ten days and this is day four. good news there as far as everything being on time, you should expect delays. we'll be right back, after the break. an important announcement from abc7 kgo tv.

santa ana down across socal and look at the high desert. dangerous heat for several days. up to 104 degrees. 101 in palm springs and 82 in l.a. and mid to upper 80s through the central valley. now on abc7 news live update. at the live desk, i'm tracking president trump's dangerous disinfectant comments made last week suggesting that by injecting it, it could be a potential coronavirus cure. it does appear that the white house is operating in damage control this morning. so, here's what abc news has learned. they may be scaling back on those daily coronavirus press briefings. some critics have called for less press briefings saying they act more like campaign rallies rather than a way to deliver accurate information. >> but i believe what the american people need from the president is to appear at some of the briefings off the top 10 to 15 minutes of announcing whatever needs to be announced that day and an hour and a half

what you need to show in order to be at this site this morning. amy? >> hi, good morning, reggie. this opens in a couple hours at 9:00. you don't need an appointment. this is for residents of livermore, dublin and pleasanton. you need to meet one of a list o requirements they have here and i have them for you right here. they want you to at least have a fever of 100 degrees or more or be suffering from a shortness of breath or maybe have recent exposure to a confirmed or suspected coronavirus patient. people who suffer chronic diseases are welcome here. people over the age of 65. women who are currently or recently have been pregnant and the homeless. stanford health center is putting this on along with those three cities. organizers say they have 150 tests a day to go through or 750 for the week. and if they meet the, if they run out during the day, they'll put a sign up here at gate 12 here at the alameda county fairgrounds letting people know

that they've run out for the day. they should be able to get you your results pretty quickly within three days. as of right now, we do not see a line of cars, which is different from when they opened, test sites were opened a month or so ago. a line of people not right now. don't worry if you're thinking about coming here and worried about the crowds. no crowd yet. amy hollyfield, abc7 news. thousands of high school seniors who are already missing out on their high school graduations are worried about what will happen to them in the fall. friday is a big decision day for so many people when it comes to colleges and universities. there are fears that a second wave of the virus could force incoming freshman to stay home this fall. >> it just seems like not even comparable to what a good college experience should be. >> as many as one in six students say they want to take a gap year before starting college. universities are preparing for a
