debate about when california students might go back to class for the next school year. on tuesday governor newsom said he was hopeful to open school by late july or early august but yesterday school superintendent voiced his doubts, saying they don't know when schools will start. >> your local school districts will make decisions and if school needs to open still in a social distancing environment, we'll make sure your schools have lots of resources and supplies to support our students to be safe. >> yesterday, therman's office released a statement saying he is working with state and national figures to study what measures must be in place before the start to the school year. this morning, dr. anthony fauci is responding to news the fda may soon approve a drug to treat covid-19. jobina fortson is at the live desk with these promising results. good morning, jobina. >> good morning, kumasi.

made in foster city. the trump administration is pushing for the fda to approve it for emergency use. a clinical trial has shown that patients with covid-19 who were treated with the drug recovered four days faster than those who didn't. and it led to fewer deaths. remdisivir has dr. anthony fauci's approval. >> the data shows it has a clear cut significant, positive effect in diminishing the time to recovery. >> people who are treated earlier, less than ten days into their symptoms do seem to be having better outcomes. 62% of those people were able to be discharged at day 14. >> the, fda says while more testing needs to be done, they are working with gilead to get it done as quickly as possible.

i think people were really caught off guard yesterday. you know, a lot of us have changed the way for our essential workers, i should say. you go, you leave a bit later. i know people were late due to the issues on the bay bridge but we don't have that problem today. we'll take a live look in san francisco right now and i have some good news here. cal trans came out yesterday and said that really things are running faster than they expected. so, it was supposed to wrap up on the 10th day for the project. this is so southbound and northbound 101 right now are being diverted to 280 until 6:00 a.m. and southbound 101 traffic will go on to the northbound lane of 101. but you can see there the paving work is complete and now it's up to them just finishing the details here. and, you know, so rare that we see construction wrap up early but cal trans said they have seen traffic increase by 40% to 60% on the roadway in this

hot temperatures record, all-time record high april heat down in socal. 1 102 in palm springs and 68 today in monterey. kumasi. san jose is temporarily blocking rent increases for thousands of residents for the rest of the year. a rent freeze affecting 39,000 apartments and more than 10,000 rent-controlled mobile homes. they fall under the rent stabilization program. the freeze will be in effect until the end of the year. the move is similar to one that is already passed in oakland, los angeles and other cities in california. we are hearing from one of the students that is suing the university of california system refunded for fees that they can't use. targets the cal state system. about 700,000 usc students are taking classes online but paying the same tuition as before. one of the plaintiffs says uc
