breezy and every once in a while as we look down the embarcadero. even low 40s in the north bay to low 50s. 50s and 60s and barely 70 inland by noon and then the breezes kick in and hold our temperatures in the 60s and 70s and maybe a light jacket if you're heading out for a walk this evening. reggie? >> thanks, mike. if you're heading out to shop you might encounter some employees walking out as you are walking in. they are protesting. they say conditions at work still haven't been solved during this pandemic. let's go to abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield who is live in walnut creek. amy? >> reggie, it's may 1 and international workers day and essential workers day saying the workers at whole foods and amazon are essential and they deserve better protection during this pandemic. so, they have scheduled this walk out. a worker at the amazon fulfillment center in tracy died this week of covid-19 complications. the united food and commercial

workers international, well, they say that there have been a totalal of 72 worker deaths to this virus. organizers are calling for workers at amazon, target, whole foods and other companies to walk out today and demand better protections and benefits during this pandemic. well, amazon released this statement responding to today's walkout saying, while we respect people's right to express them sever severalselves, we object to the irresponsible actions of labor groups of spreading misinformation and making false claims about amazon during this unprecedented health and economic crisis. they have masks and temperature checks, hand sanitizer and they've been given more time off and they have been given higher pay. this will be the second walkout. we also saw one back in march. but here in the bay area, we didn't see a huge impact. we didn't see a flood of workers walking out of whole foods

grocery stores. so, we'll be watching to see what today brings. we wanted to give you the heads up that this is planned and could impact your experience as you shop today. reporting live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. now an abc7 news live update. at the live desk, i'm looking into the effort to make covid-19 testing more readily available. popular retailers like walgreens and rite aid and also wal-mart are expanding their testing capaci capacity. walmart will have five more testing locations in five states this week and plans to expand to 49 states and puerto rico. this morning the president of walgreens spoke about the work under way on "gma." >> we're really focused on underserved areas and proud to be working with the administration and state and local governments to do that for two reasons. one to give the visibility and, second to help america kind of get back to work again. >> he says people interested in

getting testing can go to the walgreens website to take a survey and see if they qualify for this additional testing. earlier this week, we told you that cvs plans on opening drive-thru testing sites at their minute clinics. they hope to have testing sites at 1,000 locations by the end of the month. reggie? >> jobina, thank you. some promising news at ucsf where a global team of scientists are now working on existing drugs to see if they can help fight coronavirus. the details were released in the journal "nature" and they hope to begin human trials soon. also at ucsf, doctors developed a way to perform eye exams with extra protection by using this plexiglass attached to the microscope. a doctor who tried to make dividers with plastic sheeting was sharing his struggles with his co-worker and that doctor thought what about using plexiglass and thought about his father-in-law who had the tools to do it. >> it became a family effort

between myself, my wife and her father to get these shields created and designed and delivered. >> doctors have now examined more than 100 patients using the shields at the ucsf medical center parnasas campus and other facilities are also getting the shields. abc7 news is focused on issues that can help build a better bay area and that includes helping your family especially during this pandemic. a child care portal years in the making is up in and running. abc7 news reporter kate larsen shows us how it works. who is eligible to use the site and who has access to the state's subsidized child care slots? i spoke to kim johnson, the director of california's department of social services. >> we welcome all families across california for the child care subsidies. those subsidies are limited and prioritized for both the vulnerable populations and for

essential workers. >> reporter: how do parents know the 41,000 day care centers listed are safe? johnson said all programs are vetted and licensed. >> both a background check for the individuals that are providing the care, as well as the facility check. >> reporter: how does the portal work? >> this is what you see when you first land on the my chi childcareca.gov website. >> reporter: he is the start up of open lattice when built the site. you can type your zip code into the search bar or use your location to find nearby child care centers. >> i can see that this has spots open and has the capacity of eight children and you can see if there are any complaints and nearest hospitals and licensing information. >> reporter: how do you contact the different facilities to maintain the privacy of small in-home centers and phone numbers and addresses are not listed. you can e-mail or call the referral agency. for larmger day care centers and preschools more contact

information is provided. will the portal be used beyond the pandemic? johnson said the resource is something the state has wanted to set up for years and that the crisis finally gave them the momentum to get it done. >> covid has created and spurred acceleration in many spots. >> reporter: they built this site in a month. in the newsroom, i'm kate larsen, abc7 news. parents don't need to navigate the work/life balance alone. the child care industry has pivoted to virtual babysitting. the ceo of sitter city says her online baby sitting sessions last up to 90 minutes over video chat. >> it's not a replacement and certainly not, you know, for hours of child care, it's just another tool in the tool kit as parent are trying to navigate the situation. >> online babysitting can give parent the relief they need to make dinner, take a phone call, work out at home or just relax for a bit. we also have a lot more information and resources about coronavirus on our website.

including the link to portal for child care. go to abc7news.com/covidhelp. new at 6:00, an east bay teenager raising money to help businesses in danville. this is lindsay and she is the founder of community cup. she's encouraging people to donate money that they would have otherwise spent on a cup of coffee. >> people typically spend a few dollars a day on coffee or a latte or something. this gives people the opportunity to help out their community because i feel a lot of people are looking for a way to support their local businesses and this gives them that chance. >> she has already raised about $4,000 and will know to local businesses impacted by the pandemic. community cup has expanded to pleasanton and some on the east coast interested in becoming community cup captains to start their local chapters. i do have to say that coffee is like the easiest thing for me to go and get right now. a lot of coffee shops open.

joe biden for the first time publicly addressed these claims from a tara reade and he says in response to all of this in response to the allegation that he denies it, it did not happen. democratic presidential candidate made the statement this morning during an interview on msnbc's "morning joe." biden's remarks come at a critical moment for the presumptive democratic nominee as he faces mounting pressures after leaving weeks of denials to his campaign. >> it's not true. i'm saying unequivocally, it never happened. it didn't. it never happened. i don't remember any type of complaint she may have made. it was 27 years ago. i don't remember and nor does anyone else that i'm aware of and the fact is i don't remember. >> biden also called on the national archives to search for the written complaint reade said she filed in the 1990s. i'll send it back to you guys. >> jobina, thank you.

virus. ter t sydney said it was difficult for her father to get tested for covid-19 because his initial symptoms with urmore like that of the stomach flu. the new york city health department says black people are twice as likely to die from covid-19 than their white counterparts. in california, black people make up 6% of the population, but account for 6.5% of coronavirus cases and nearly 11% of deaths. and the state is still missing 35% of its racial data. a ucsf doctor says access to testing is not the same in all communities. barbara lee says the federal and state government must devote more resources to help the most impacted communities. this conversation will continue next thursday 4:00. we'll focus on the issues the latino community is facing. we'll ask you to join us for race and coronavirus. a bay area conversation. that's may 7th at 4:00 p.m. right here on abc7 and you can also watch it live online at

sunny and seasonal and breezy and a lot like yesterday. saturday we have some sprinkles and cloud y a lot of the day an coolest day and summer spread will develop next week well above average temperatures especially inland. today close to average with mid to upper 70s in the south bay and santa clara at 75 and 69 in san mateo and that's right around the upper 60s to low 70s up and down the peninsula. near 60 along the coast with the breezy conditions. check out the low to mid 70s for most of the north bay and the farther north you go, upper 70s and then along the east bay shore, upper 60s to low 70s for most neighborhoods and mid to upper 70s for the trivalley and low 80s on highway 4 and contra costa county. temperatures milder this morning low to upper 50s with drizzle possible in the morning as that area of low pressure spinning there in the gulf of alaska. shoots some clouds our way as we head into the evening hours and there you go. that's the drizzle possible in the morning. here's a look at the cold front moving to the north bay and

the scaffolding they were on came lou looose because the win high yesterday. a person in a nearby building shot this video of the two workers holding on as the scaffolding was just swinging. they were eventually able to secure the lines to get on to the balcony and thank goodness they were okay. earlier this week, we told you that lyft laid off nearly 1,000 people due to the covid-19 pandemic and now eliminating scooters in several cities including oakland and san jose. lime is laying off 13% of its workforce. in an e-mail to employees, the company's ceo said sadly lime has no choice but to say good-bye to about 80 employees because of financial difficulties presented by covid-19. starting monday, all passengers will be required to wear masks if you're flying delta, united or jetblue flights. united says it will provide passengers will face coverings. delta and jetblue will make it

good morning, everyone. happy friday. and happy month of may. it is the first of may. and also happening right now, we want to take you live to zuckerberg san francisco hospital where law enforcement has lined up to honor front line medical workers during their shift change. look at that. everybody happy, masks on, social distancing and just showing love and that's what we like to see on a friday morning. they're actually circling the hospital right now because they want to practice that social distancing while showing support. there's multiple agencies there including the san francisco sheriff office as well as police and fire departments. look at them. i love that. now, we'll check in with mike for a look at our forecast. good morning, mike. >> good morning, kumasi. happy friday to you. hi, everybody. happy friday to you, also. let's look at live doppler 7 and a few low clouds along the coast and few high clouds streaming along our sky and breezes gone temporarily. we'll start off with mostly

sunny conditions and then become sunny this afternoon with a passing high cloud or two. the breezes will keep our temperatures pretty close to average with mid 60s around san francisco and upper 60s to low 70s through most of the bay as you head into the south bay you start to hit the mid and upper 70s and same thing in the north bay and even a few 80s trying to show up around fairfield and antioch. we'll talk aboutt the cooler weather. happening today protests that we've seen like these across the country are coming to california. people across the state will demand governor newsom end the state's shelter-in-place order. julian glover is here with more on why people say it is time to reopen the state. julian? >> hey, good morning, kumasi. the people we're hearing from largely in part are people who are just fed up with the shelter-in-place at this point. many small business owners who are saying if this does not end soon, their businesses just won't make it to the other side

of this pandemic. so, protests are planned today at noon all across the state of california. in sacramento and dozens of cities else where, including san francisco when demonstrations will take place just outside of city hall again at noon today. organizers say they sent thousands of e-mails to governor newsom disagreeing with the stay-at-home orders. they say, though, they don't feel heard abby the governor. >> at this point he's acting like some tyrannical king out of control that won't speak to the people. the rights of people are being suspended and the constitution trampled on. and that's the biggest problem that we have at this point in time. >> so, this group, again, organizing all across the state of california. they mainly have been doing so via facegroup in a group called reopen california. inside that group they say the protests happening at the state capitol today will be a peaceful in-vehicle protest.

they do not plan on getting out of their cars. we'll have to see exactly how this plays out in sacramento and in san francisco and across the state. for now reporting live, julian glover, abc7 news. at the live desk this morning, i'm looking at texas right now because people will start being able to dine in restaurants today and there are some restrictions that we're learning about now. restaurant wis will have to disposable menus it looks like and condiments are only being provided by request and no budays. by the end of the week, 32 states have eased restrictions and dr. anthony fauci is urging caution on this. >> you just can't leap over things and get into a situation where you're really tempting a rebound. that's the thing i get concern about. >> some states and cities are heeding his warning. new york city will close subway and commuter trains during the overnight hours starting next

week. stay-at-home orders in michigan have been extended to may 15th. i'll send it back to you. >> jobina, thank you. researchers at uc davis are now testing a potential vaccine for coronavirus. this is being developed verndari. a skin patch with a microneedle to develop the vaccine. the technology eliminates the need for refrigeration and if testing is successful, the vaccine can be sent by mail to people sheltering in place so they can administer it themselves. foster city drugmaker gilead is working on an inhaled version of their drug that has shown promise. the fda deciding to authorize the emergency use of remdesivir. patients treated with the drug covered four days faster than those who didn't. right now it has to be administered intravenously. the head of antioch city planning commission will learn his fate today over a

controversial facebook post. he got criticism after suggesting that covid-19 is nature's way of weeding out the old, sick and weak. he said it could actually help society as a whole. abc7 news anchor eric thomas spoke with him yesterday and turnage said he doesn't regret putting that idea out there. >> you didn't think people would be calling for your head afterwards? >> not calling for my head, no. i got my first death threat today, so i guess i made it big time. >> i saw it and i was just very appalled and this is somebody that represents antioch. >> city council member monica wilson is leading the charge for tu turnage's removal. well, couples in california can now get married legally remotely. governor newsom signed an executive order allowing adults to get married through a video conference instead of in person. new york state began allowing zoom weddings earlier this week and in california brides and

grooms can get marriage licenses from clerks as long as they both are in the state and can present identification during the video conference. the license can then be issued through an e-mail. the governor's order is in effect for 60 days. east bay cities are moving forward with plans to get homeless people into housing so they can shelter in place during this pandemic. a abc7 news was in alameda as they were ferningish four trailers. oakland has received dozens of these trailers that are expected to be ready next week. >> the mortality rate for homeless on this street is higher than most and then to compound it with the covid-19 virus that's not something as a community we would want. >> homeless advocates say for every person who gets a spot in one of these trailers, there are many more on the streets still in need of help. special advocate ambassadors in brightly colored shirts will be around lake merritt this

morning reminding spokes to stay physically apart. >> the lake is getting crowded and we're not seeing the kind of social distancing that we have got to be practicing while we are still under these health orders. >> signs will also be up to remind everyone about the sheltshelt er-at-home order. she will be at lake merritt this weekend handing out masks. sausalito will crack down on nonessential travel and social distancing violations this weekend in response to visitors who crowded the town last weekend. police will issue citations to anyone violating the rules. citations carry fines of 500 bucks. officers will also be enforcing parking restrictions. city lots have been closed since sunday. a legal battle over beaches. the governor ordered some closed starting today and we are live in orange county this morning. plus, the pandemic hitting retailers very hard. j. crew becoming the latest company on the brink of closing.

here's a look at emoryvilerymer where it's 50. quiet and not much going on and quiet across the dumbarton bridge during the afternoon and evening hours. let's look at the north bay. how quickly we jump 40s at 7:00 and 50s at 9:00 and 70s at 1:00 and then back down to about 66 with sunshine at 7:00. all right. we're in the 50s through 9:00 in the east bay and hover around 70 for a couple hours this afternoon and down to 63 at 7:00 with sunshine and san francisco it's 56 through 9:00 and then we've got low to mid 60s the rest of the day and once we get to the mid 60s and winds drop us down to 60 around 7:00. a chance of sprinkles coming up, but, first, over to jobina. how are our essential workers doing this morning, jobina? >> i think they're doing pretty well for the most part. they haven't had too many issues on the road, mike. so, yeah, looking good. happy friday to you.

happy friday to everyone else and i have some good news for you. we're going to take a live look showing you the 101 alemany project on 101 and caltrans zoomed in their camera and that guy is taking some photos and maybe they're just proud of the wrk they're doing because it has moved much faster and everything is ahead of schedule and those southbound lanes should be open there in about 20 minutes. so, great news. work on the northbound side will be done by 3:00 p.m. tomorrow. this project was supposed to happen in july. cal trans moved it up because of the lighter traffic due to the shelter-in-place order. what you're seeing here this is the northbound deck and a little bit of work that needs to be done. if you look in the corner on your right-hand side of the screen you can see the cones and the lines on the southbound side looks nice and smooth and ready to go for our essential workers in 20 minutes. and this project really wasn't supposed to be

their shift change. first responders from multiple san francisco departments have lined up around the hospital to cheer on workers who are on the front lines of the fight against coronavirus. they're calling today medical team appreciation day and it is nice to see just how many people showed up for these folks as they get ready for what i'm sure will be another long shift. we wish them luck today. happening today governor gavin newsom's orders to close all beaches in orange county to take effect. three cities are pursuing legal action to block those closures. john gregory is live at hunt huntington beach this morning. >> technically huntington beach should be closed but plenty of people down in the water and on the sand. take a look behind me, you bight see those surfers out there and also a life guard vehicle. we have not seen this life guard vehicle do anything to try to enforce the governor's order. now, the governor issued this

order in response to some big crowds that gathered in orange county beaches over the weekend. newport beach and huntington beach were singled out. the governor just didn't feel people were practicing proper social distancing. initial initial he was talking about closing all the etch bbeaches i state but focuses on orange county beach and people resent that. the city of huntington beach issued a legal challenge and the local sheriff has also indicated he's not happy with the governor's order and it's going to be interesting to see if local police enforce the governor's order, too. and right now we're not seeing it. life guards not doing it, surfers down here, joggers, people sitting on the beach and we are expecting a rally later today to get the beaches back open legally. we're live in huntington beach john gregory for abc7 news. i'll send it back to you guys. >> thank you, john. workers in greece are taking

part in protests and staying six feet apart. new video in athens shows practicing social distancing rules by standing on red markers to ensure space between them. if you head out to shop, you might encounter employees walking out as you walk in. they are protesting working conditions and they haven't been resolved. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live. >> hi, kumasi. now, the last time whole foods and amazon planned to walk out back in march, we didn't see a huge impact here in the bay area. and i have seen some comments online that this is being planned by a very vocal minority that most workers are happy. but there is a planned walk out today. there is a call for workers to walk out, for shoppers not to cross the picket line that these workers deserve better work conditions. and a worker at the amazon fulfillment center in tracy did die this week of covid-19 complications. the united food and international said there is a total of 72 worker deaths to the

virus. organizers are calling for workers at amazon, target, whole foods and other companies to walk out today and demand better protections and benefits during this pandemic. well, amazon has released this statement responding to today's walkout saying, while we respect people's right to express themselves, we object to the irresponsible acs of labor groups in spreading misinformation and making false claims about amazon during this unprecedented health and economic crisis. it goes on to say that employees at whole foods and amazon do have masks. they have temperature checks and hand sanitizer and they have also given them more time off and higher pay. we wanted to give you the heads up, though, this has been planned and could impact your shopping experience today. live in walnut creek, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you, amy. now we go to your morning money report. macy's is preparing to start reopening its stores monday. the company will begin with 68 stores in states like georgia

and texas where stay -at-home orders. employees wearing masks. macy's hopes to open all of its 775 stores over the next six weeks. meanwhile, j. crew could go out of business. abc news has learned the clothing company is preparing to file for bankruptcy as soon as this weekend. j. crew has been dealing with lagging sales the past few years and criticism that it fell out of touch with its customers. right now we are taking a live look at the new york stock exchange as trading gets under way this morning. you can see we're starting down significantly about 433 points this morning. many students across the bay area have been out of school for six weeks now because of the coronavirus pandemic and one east bay student is using his free time and tech skills for good. this is 9-year-old jaden and he's been making 3d face shields for medical front line workers.

cooler saturday with those sprinkles possible, especially in the north bay in the afternoon hours. so, we've got mid to upper 70s in the south bay today with cupertino and milpitas at 74. start 74 mountain view and redwood city and 67 as we head towards millbrae. we'll be near 60 along the coast today. quite a blustery day and mid 60s downtown and sausalito and along the east bay shore low to mid 70s except for places like richmond and berkeley and immediate neighbors in upper 60s. some 80s from pittsburg eastward and around fairfield. the cloud recove rolls in and drizzle possible and milder temperatures low to mid 50s. that area of low pressure is going to steer clouds towards us as we head into the evening hours. you can see the marine layer clouds come in. we wake up tomorrow morning with that chance of drizzle and then the cold front moves into the north bay during the afternoon early evening hours. falls apart before leaving a couple hundredths of an inch in
