ongoing, some states are still stepping up or extending restrictions. in new york they canceled school for the rest of the academic year. as many states start to re-open their businesses, there's growing anger in america from some people who feel this process is happening much too slowly, and others say it's happening far too fast. this morning, an intense tug-of-war across america as states weigh the timing and the consequences of re-opening their businesses. more fervent demonstrations bubbling up around the country. impassioned protesters gathering tightly by the hundreds frequently without masks. >> freedom. >> reporter: some in california angered at the governor closing orange county beaches. in other states many furious as they say their freedoms are being infringed. >> let the businesses in this state open up so we can meet our payroll. >> reporter: some states now opening gyms, hair salons or retail stores. others offering malls, theaters and golf courses. but just because some businesses have the green light to re-open

him later. adrienne, we'll talk soon. now to our "gma" cover story, meghan, the duchess of sussex, is suing a british tabloid and just got unwelcome news from the judge. our julia macfarlane has that story. >> reporter: meghan the duchess of sussex, dealt a setback in her lawsuit against a british tabloid. a judge ruling her claims that the publisher of "the mail" on sunday acted dishonestly deliberately stirred up conflict between the duchess and her father and that the paper had an agenda against meghan will not go forward. >> this judgment has made it clear what the focus of the trial will be. this is a case about copyright and privacy and some of these more wide-ranging elements in their current form anyway will not be allowed to form part of the case. >> reporter: the claims going forward allege breach of privacy and copyright infringement by the paper. "the mail" printed a private letter the duchess sent to her father, thomas markle, after he missed her wedding to prince harry. the sussexes have had a fraught

relationship with the press. prince harry spoke about what they call unfair treatment in an itv documentary last fall opening up about the pain he feels over the death of his mother, princess diana. >> i will always protect my family, and now i have a family to protect. so everything that -- everything that she went through and what happened to her is incredibly raw every single day, and that's not me being paranoid. that's just me not wanting a repeat of the past. >> reporter: and just last month the couple, now based in california, announcing they would no longer engage with british tabloids except through an attorney. and, guys, just before i go, take a look at these new photos just released by duchess kate celebrating her daughter, princess charlotte's 5th birthday. here she is helping to deliver some freshly made pasta homemade by the cambridges to deliver toast to the elderly and vulnerable. eva. >> that's so cute. happy birthday to her. >> definitely. >> growing up so fast. thanks, julia.

now let's check in with rob in the front yard this weekend. how are you doing? >> i'm doing great. it's going to be a beautiful day across the northeast finally. temperatures at or above average. you hear the birds chirping. they're psyched about it as well. the heat has been across the southwest and we mentioned the record-breaking temperatures and in southern california people flocking to the beaches so much so the governor closed them. before that, the surfers were out and we showed last week you the dolphins create glowing -- because of the plankton from this red tide created from san diego to los angeles. surfers were out there. they're stirring up the plankton and glowing in the dark. amazing stuff that won't be happening in the near future as those beaches are closed. good saturday morning. look at all the fog here from the golden gate bridge. visibility an issue along highway 1. we'll look for the fog to lift. we could see a few sprinkles throughout the afternoon and maybe an isolated shower mainly in the north bay and coast.

psychological and physiological ramifications. so this morning, some advice about how to stay connected. take a look. >> i'm feeling pretty disconnected at this point. >> the loneliness hits in a lot of different ways at a lot of different times. >> reporter: they're voicing the concerns of many. the feelings of isolation and loneliness. >> what's the most stressful is not even that i have to connect with people virtually, it's knowing that hypothetically i won't be able to see my family for an extended period of time. >> reporter: katie hindman, a college admission counselor in minnesota, is learning to adjust to this new normal. >> i have friends, you know, all over the country, all over the world, and it's hard to know that it's indefinite. >> reporter: for high school science teacher and father andrew carr, being away from his students has been devastating. >> trying to teach online, it feels very one-sided, and -- i'm

getting -- i think i'm getting emotional on that first part, the first question here. i miss them. i mean, i miss that interaction. >> there are steps that we can take to blunt the impact of loneliness. one of the greatest gifts that we can give each other is the gift of our full attention, and we have an opportunity to do that now. >> reporter: dr. vavek murthy, former surgeon general and author of a new book "together" says acts of service like checking in on a neighbor can be truly beneficial. >> delivering some food to a co-worker who might be struggling to figure out how to balance teleworking and homeschooling, allowing somebody else to help you is a powerful act as well. we were meant to connect to each other through mutual acts of service. >> reporter: if you're feeling overwhelmed, whether in an apartment alone or in a house full of children, don't forget to take the time to recenter. >> when we do that, we'll find that we're better able to

connect with others, to be appreciative of the light and the goodness around us. >> in terms of recentering yourself, dr. murthy has a few suggestions that include prayer, meditation, gratitude journals or, guys, just simply sitting outside and taking a few deep breaths for a few moments. >> i mean those are all great tips. we have just been talking about this. isolating is just completely against our social instincts as human beings. >> so many people wanting just to be able to connect with other people and feeling very alone right now. >> exactly. really good information. thank you, dan. we'll talk to you soon. we do want to turn now to how our pets are handling all the changes at home. when humans start going about their daily lives again, our dogs our going to be a little bit confused, and our dr. doolittle marciano, rob, is with his little gal out there with some tips. rob, good morning.

>> hey, good morning. good morning, whit. well, you know, many of us are home a lot, if not all the time and, well, that's good for the dogs, at least most of them get to go on a lot of walks. some are saying no more walks please, but it could cause a problem when we eventually start to go back to work and leave the house. here are tips, how to help your pup with separation anxiety. dog, man's best friend, and now you're always together. but one day hopefully soon that's going to change and these pups need a plan. >> suddenly the dogs don't get the email that it's back to work or whatever that new normal is. i'm concerned we're going to see a lot of separation anxiety. >> were you a naughty boy? >> reporter: but not all dogs react the same. so we looked at three different dogs and asked animal behavior consultant steve dale how we can help keep their anxiety in check. first up 8-year-old labrador retriever burt. he loves hanging out with his labrador sis lucy, but suffers from separation anxiety when his

owner leaves the house. steve suggests for dogs like burt, be proactive and use tools that we have at our disposal. >> pheromone products, probiotics, nutraceuticals products, and your dog may be able to wear something, a vest, that makes your dog feel more comfortable. >> reporter: next pup, rucker, a 1-year-old golden retriever who loves her human time, but also enjoys a little me time. for rucker it's important to look out for any developing signs of anxiety. >> so if you've left the house and the dog is howling or crying in your absence or you come home and you see your dog that you know is house trained has had accidents or your dog is literally digging at the door perhaps trying to escape, all of those are indications of separation anxiety. >> reporter: and last up, newly adopted 10-week-old bernedoodle stevie. good thing for young pups like stevie, they are quick learners. >> so for dogs that were recently adopted or are in foster, here's what you do.

go take a walk without the dog. if you can, set up a camera or leave treats out all over. if the dog gobbles up those treats, it's a good sign that the dog wasn't anxious. >> reporter: you know, a lot of people have been adopting dogs and dogs from shelters have a lot of separation anxiety. we got sonny several years ago from a shelter, and she had separation anxiety because of being passed around to foster homes so often and we spent time with her. now she's terrific. we can take her off the leash. she loves to play fetch. you want the stick? you do? go get it. good girl. we get to take her off leash a little bit. settle down. settle down. barking at the neighbor. you know, we got some work to do. nonetheless, rescue a pup. do a little work with him or her and you'll be glad you did. >> she did great. she did great. by the way, rob and eva, we are on the market for a new dog now. >> oh, good luck. >> it's happening. >> yes. you know what else is happening, mother's day, may 10th. that is next sunday and this is a really good time to get a

"billions" returns tomorrow for its fifth season on showtime. paul giamatti leads a star-studded cast and this season is actually going to have julianna margulies, something to look forward to. i've been a damien lewis fan since "homeland" so he absolutely holdd up in this show an smashes it out of the park. anything like me in a big tv watcher, i fully believe you can binge all four previous seasons in about a week to catch up, so i believe in you all out there.

your new book here, it's a self-help book. people have been encouraging you to write something like this for a long time, and yet you kept passing. why is that? >> look, i felt like the person who writes a self-help book is some sort of expert on life, and i'm not -- when i got into it, it was cool for me because i got a chance to tell -- you know, explain how i recovered from different situations, and there's always peaks and valleys in your career and in the business. you know, so it's a cool experience. i think people would take some pretty interesting things away from it. >> you've been pretty candid that you didn't have it easy coming up. what would you tell a young curtis jackson about what to do now? >> maybe earlier i would have told -- i would have told myself that, you know, you can do anything. you know, people think that because they've grown under bad circumstances in the very beginning, that's just a start. you can work your way out of
