now, your health, your safety, this is abc 7 news. governor newsom hinted, if californians follow the shelter in place orders, we could see restrictions lifted in a matter of days. so is the bay area doing its part this weekend? good evening, thanks so much for joining us. i'm dion lim. i'm eric thomas. it was scenes like this one in oakland last weekend that drew the ire of officials. they're warning people to follow the guidelines or else the restrictions may not be lifted. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard to see if people were

behaving a little better this weekend. he's live in san francisco. cornell, what did you find? >> eric, many say it's been so tough staying indoors for so long. a popular place to be today, marina green. we saw a lot of people out and about on both sides of the bay. luckily, no large gatherings, though. >> you getting antsy? >> a little bit, yeah. >> reporter: seven weeks at home has been a long time for roxana rojas. she's not alone. lake merrick was crowded with folks getting sun and exercise on saturday. >> the lake is one of the few places that counts as a place to be allowing us to walk because a lot of the parks are closed. >> last week it looked like pre-covid 2019. not much social distancing happening. it prompted the mayor to send a warning. give the lake a break. >> lake merrick is getting too crowded. please, recreate somewhere else. >> police officers were on duty

to discourage large gatherings. despite that, many say things are changing. >> lot more traffic and people walking. >> the marina was i popular hangout, ocean beach, too. no parking signs deterred many from coming here. the governor came close to an ultimatum. saying the shelter in place is close to being modified, that depends on the public. especially beach-goers in california. >> if we have what i hope and expect, we don't see the huge crowds descend, then we'll be in a position as early as monday and tuesday to make announcements, new strategies and partnerships. >> the marin county sheriff tweeted the stay-at-home order is still happening and will be enforced. for the most part, first responders say the bay area is doing its part, wearing face coverings and staying home to help flatten the curve of this deadly pandemic. >> without you're support and without adhering to the guidelines, i think that we would be in a much worse spot

than we are today. >> reporter: starting monday, six counties in the bay area will relax some shelter in place restrictions. construction, outdoor businesses like nurseries and golf courses to name a few, will be allowed to operate once again. live in san francisco, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. thank you very much. after seeing large crowds and cars parking all over the place last weekend, santa cruz county is taking measures to keep its beaches from getting jammed full of people. all beaches are closing from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. people will be allowed for surfing, swimming and boating. during the times they're opening, visitors should walk, run or ex series. in short, don't sunbathe and keep your feet moving. opposition is growing to -- newport beach's city council voted to affirm its support for two other cities that have challenged governor newsom in court. a judge upheld the governor's

order yesterday. protesters rallied yesterday against the governor. the governor issued the closure order after thousands crowded beaches and did not practice social distancing last weekend. mean tienl, more roads are being closed off to cars in oakland to give people enough space to exercise outside but stay socially distant. we put a map together to show you exactly where. check it out. there are five miles of closures along six routes in several oakland neighborhoods. this is the third round of closures during the stay-at-home order. the city plans to close another four to five miles of streets next week. there are polls showing many americans support stay-at-home orders. but protesters are making their voices heard. taking to the streets, call for their states to lift the orders. several states in several of them, retail stores, gyms and salons and even restaurants have been allowed to reopen. but some owners are still hesitant. here's abc news reporter, shah.

>> as states weigh decisions on what and when to reopen, demonstrators on both sides of the argument are look to go have their voices heard. many angry believing their freedoms are being taken away. others concerned about the economic impact. >> let the businesses in this state open up so we can meet our payroll, we can pay our employees' benefits and start doing business again. >> new jersey's governor has reopened parks, but warns residents to be smart. >> but if we are reckless, we will lose not just more but many more. >> restaurants in texas now allowed to open, but some owners are still hesitant. >> we want to open feeling safe. i don't feel safe. i don't think my staff feels safe. i don't think the clientele feels safe. >> some retailers also getting back to business. simon has reopened 31 of its malls across eight states. shoppers crowding this mall in oklahoma. some with masks, others without. a shopper described the scene as this nebraska outlet mall.

>> feels like everybody is scared to be next to each other. >> department store chain macy's says its stores will have enhanced health and safety measures. at the beauty counter, you're no longer allowed to touch testers. limited fitting rooms and need to wear masks. cases of the virus are still on the rise in at least 18 states. some now protesting the reopening. in georgia, a mock funeral procession from demonstrators condemning the state's efforts to allow businesses to swiftly reopen as the debate over reopening continues, new york's governor says it's important to use information to determine the next step. >> it's not emotions. not politics. not what people think or feel. but what we know in terms of facts. >> mississippi's governor taking a step back. reviewing plans to allow some retail businesses to reopen

after his state saw an increase in the number of confirmed cases and deaths from the virus in the last few days. doreen shaw, abc news, los angeles. free coronavirus testing will be offered in san rafael it on monday. marin county will offer it to those who live in the canal which is one of the most densely populated areas of the county. the site will be francisco boulevard and should be able to do more than 100 tests each day. people have to make an appointment first and they can do that online. there are 230 confirmed cases of the virus in marin county. the san francisco marin food bank is planning another food giveaw giveaway in san francisco on monday. they've been distributing food to those who need it the most. martin luther king, jr., middle school on monday. they're looking for volunteers for two different shifts. you must reserve a spot to volunteer. they will not take walk-ins. san francisco's popular restaurant chain, the grove, may

be at risk of closing. abc 7 news was at the fill more street location earlier today. the owners said they may have to close this location and decided to close the haze valley restaurant permanently. they say bank of america failed to submit a loan they applied for to keep their business running and reapplying would take weeks. the owners are worried the fill more restaurant won't turn april profit because of limited seating space and social distancing mesh ushs. >> to the north bay, casino furloughed many employees on friday. and management took a 20% pay cut. security to maintenance and cleaning crews remain on the job. it employs more than 2,000 people and one of the largest in the bay area. an official told the santa rosa press democrat, the casino is looking to reopen in june and has a four-step plan it sent to governor gavin newsom. southwest airlines is

changing the way passengers will line up to board its flights to promote social distancing during the covid-19 pandemic. because of the coronavirus, southwest is changing its notorious boarding process that some people liken to a cattle call. passengers traditionally line up in groups of 30 along both sides of marked poles. now southwest will ask them to cue up just ten passengers at a time. they've stopped serving drinks and snacks and asking passengers to wear masks as well. united airline warns of major layoffs on the horizon if air travel does not pick up. united the president scott kirby said they lost $1 billion in the first quarter and worries the next quarter could be worse. 93,000 people work for united, a major employer in the bay area. it runs a hub and a large maintenance facility at sfo. well, it is easy to feel isolated with the sheltering order in place. and if you're feeling down and

an a doral rescue for san francisco fire crews. a little white dog survived a 20-foot fall and got stuck between two buildings in the mission district. the department tweeted these photos you see here today. they were able to get the dog in a sack and hoist it up. the dog is doing just fine. well, all lanes of highway 101 in san francisco and alemany boulevard are now open. they completed a bridge deck construction project ahead of schedule. both sides of the freeway reopened early this morning. the work was set to take place over three weeks in july.

cal trans moved up the project so crews could take advantage of the light traffic during our stay-at-home orders. are you feeling disconnected or lonely? it's become pretty common as we stay at home and april noted doctor is offering us advice on how to cope. former surgeon general and author of a new book, vivek murphy. said -- for instance, delivering a meal to a neighbor. he suggests we be willing to accept help as well. other tips from murthy. remember, everyone is going through tough times. >> when we do that, we'll find we're better able to connect with others, to be preesh tich of the light and the goodness around us. >> things like meditation, writing down what you're grateful for or going outside for a few minutes and taking a breath are all ways to get recentered. many retailers are taking a financial beating because of the pandemic. business is booming for bay area bike shops as people turn to cycling to stay in shape.

a high flying salute. the air force thunderbirds flew over baltimore, washington, d.c. and atlanta. the commander and lead pilot of the thunderbirds says they're a gesture of goodwill on behalf of the department of defense. abc 7 news project thanks is recognizing a group of high school students giving up their day to raise money for the hungry. los altos high school kicked off the one miles per hour challenge at 9:00 a.m. students walked or ran a single mile each hour for 24 hours straight. they're pledging a dollar for every mile achieved. they will take part in different themes, run with pets, superheroes, wear a jersey and more. all money raised is going to the second harvest food bank. we invite you to join project thanks and show your gratitude.

use the #better bay area to show us how you're thanking. j.k. rowling is donating $1.2 million to two different charities amid the coronavirus pandemic. she made the announcement on twitter today. the money will help homeless people and support victims of domestic abuse. her donations come on international harry potter day and the anniversary of the battle of hogwarts, a major event in her stories. even so, rowling says it feelings inappropriate to talk about fictional deaths when real lives are being lost. if you're a fan of the avengers, captain america himself has an awesome opportunity for charity. actor chris evans is teaming up with robert downey jr., chris hemsworth and scarlett johansson for the all-in challenge. you'll get a virtual hangout with them and mark ruffalo and jeremy renner will join the chat as well. proceeds go to organizations that are helping supply people with food during the pandemic.

numerous sports stars and celebrities are taking part. should be pretty fun. should have a lot of people taking part. let's find out what the weather looks like for the rest of the weekend. here's meteorologist drew tuma. >> hey, guys. you know, we flipped the calendar page to may. nothing says may quite like having that gray sky overhead for much of the day. let's show you live doppler 7 along with satellite. what we're tracking is we're getting some peeks of sunshine in the south bay around san jose. you look off to the north bay and there are a few sprinkles. we'll zoom in closer to ukiah, willett, fort bragg right now, an isolated sprinkle thanks to a cold front currently moving through the bay area of the we'll show you that picture outside. a live look at the golden gate bridge where that fog is right overhead. it's been there all day today. tomorrow, though, we're tracking brighter skies for the second half of the weekend. we're pretty much stuck in the 60s where we have that cloud

cover. 71, though, in san jose with some sunshine in the south bay. 72 in brentwood. right now, san francisco coming in at 60 degrees. here's live doppler 7 along with satellite. the story we are tracking. you can see that cold front moving into northern california right now. the area of low pressue responsible for pushing the pressure is well off to our west in the gulf of alaska. any sprinkle will be isolated to the north bay over the next couple of hours. that's about it. at 7:00 p.m. you can see around ukiah, pops of green around the screen and any shower chance quickly fizzled by 10:00 p.m. there's no wet weather to talk about. overnight, the clouds will be on the decrease and that's going to set the stage for a really nice day on the way tomorrow. so we'll have morning sunshine to start the day and sunny skies will continue throughout much of our day tomorrow. so it will be a nice finish to the weekend. let's show you temperatures overnight tonight. we do have clearing skies.

so we'll have low 40s in the north bay. around the bay shoreline. we'll call it upper 40s to lower 50s. and, again, tonl is a much brighter day and a slightly warmer day than today as well. sunny skies in san rafael. 69. 72 in san jose. 68 in oakland. 53 in the city. but the coast is breezy and cool. half moon bay only 59 degrees. then our temperatures for the week ahead, really take off. we'll fast forward into wednesday. watch what happens. we're going to see a nice warmup around the bay area. widespread 70s, even mid to upper 80s wednesday. we'll do it again thursday and even into friday. so here is the accuweather seven-day forecast. brighter and breezy tomorrow. mild and nice monday. then the temperatures start to take off. wednesday we have that spread and then lok at that. thursday, friday, it is hot for may. get ready. we have another warm spell coming our way to finish out the seven-day forecast, guys.
