keep our distance, but it was scenes like this last weekend that drew the ire of officials. they're warning people to follow the guidelines or else restriction might not be lifted. abc 7 reporter cornell bernard went out to see if people are behaving a little better this weekend. are they? >> reporter: the good news is we didn't see any large gatherings across the bay area, although people admit it's getting very tough to stay home. are you getting antsy? >> a little bit, yeah. >> reporter: 7 weeks has been a long time for roxanne from oakland and she's not alone. >> the lake is one of the few places that really counts as a place to be allowing us to walk because a lot of the parks are closed. >> reporter: last weekend the lake looked a lot like pro-covid 2019, not a lot of social distancing happening. it prompted the mayor to give a warning, give the lake a break.

>> please re-create some else. >> reporter: today oakland police officers were on duty to discourage many large gatherings despite that many say things are definitely changing. >> a lot more traffic and people walk. >> reporter: than the marina green in san francisco police volunteers were handing out masks to those who didn't have one. earlier in the day the green was crowded with people. governor gavin newsom came close to issuing an ultimatum order friday saying the shelter in place order is close to being modified but that depends on the behavior of the public especially beach goers in southern california. >> if we have the weekend i we don't see those huge crowds descend we're going to be in a position as early as monday, tuesday i hope to make new anounments announcements of strategies and partnerships. >> reporter: for the most part first responders say the bay

area is doing its part wearing face coverings and staying home to help flatten the curve of this deadly pandemic. >> without your support and without you adhering to these guidelines i think we would be in a much worse spot than we are today. >> reporter: starting on monday six bay area counties will relax some shelteren place restricts. construction activities, retail nurseries and landscapers including golf courses will be able to operate once again. live in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. after seeing large crowds and cars parking all over the place last weekend santa cruz county is taking measures to prevent its beaches from being jammed full of people. all beaches are closing from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. people will be allowed if they're surfing, swimming or boating. during the hours the beaches are open visitors should walk, run or exercise. up opposition is growing to governor gavin newsom's order to

close beaches in orange county. a judge upheld the governor's order yesterday. protesters also rallied against governor newsom as well. the governor issued the closure order after thousands crowded beaches and did not practice social distancing last weekend. more roads are being closed off to cars today in oakland to give people enough space to exercise outside but stay socially distanced. we put together a map, and you can see exactly where. there are 5 miles of closures along 6 routes in several oakland neighborhoods. this is the third round of closures during the stay at home order. the city plans to close another 4 to 5 miles of streets starting next week. well, there are polls showing many americans support stay at home orders, but protesters are making their voices heard, taking to the streets calling for their states to lift those orders. in several states retail stores, gyms and salons, even

restaurants have been allowed to reopen. but even so some owners say they are hesitant. here's abc news reporter. >> reporter: as states weigh decisions on what and when to reopen demonstrators on both sides of the argument are looking to have their voices heard. many angry believing their freedoms are being taken away. others concerned about the economic impact. >> let the businesses in this state open up so we can meet our payroll, we can pay our employees benefits, and we can start doing business again. >> new jersey's governor has reopened parks but warns residents to be smart. >> but if we are reckless we will lose not just more but many more. >> reporter: restants in texas now allowed to open but some owners are still hesitant. >> we want to open feeling safe. i don't feel safe. i don't think my staff feel safe, and i don't think the clientele feels safe. >> some retailers also getting back to business. simon has reopened malls across

eight states. a shopper described the scene at this nebraska outlet mall. >> i feel they are being safe. it feels like everyone's skard of being next to each other. >> department store macy says its stores will have enhanced safety measures. at the beauty counter customers are no longer allowed to touch testers but a majority of americans support the stay at home orders as cases of the virus are still on the rise in at least 18 states. some now protesting the reopenings. in georgia a mock funeral procession from demonstrators condemning the state's efforts to allow businesses to sift swae reopen. as the debate over reopening continues new york's governor says it's important to use information to determine the next steps. >> it's not emotions, not politics, not what people think or feel but what we know in terms of facts. >> and mississippi's governor

kate reaves new taking a step back reviewing plans to allow some retail businesses to reopen. that's after his state saw an increase in confirmed cases and deaths from the virus in the last few days. zohreen shah, nbc news, los angeles. >> free testing will be offered starting on monday. marin county will offer to those living in the canal one of the most densely populated areas of the county. the site will be on francis f boulevard. there are more than 230 confirmed cases of the virus in marin county. the san francisco marin food bank is planning to hold another food give away in san francisco on monday. it's been using pop up pantries as ways to distribute food to those who need it the most. mondays will be at martin luther king, jr. midial school and the school is looking for people to volunteer for different shifts.

people must reserve a spot to volunteer. they will not take any walk ins. san francisco's popular restaurant chain the grove may be at risk of closing. abc 7 news was at the philmore street location earlier today. they may have to close this location and have decided to close the hayes valley restaurant permanently. they say bank of america failed to submit a loan they applied for to keep their business running and reapplying would take weeks. the owners are worried the philmore restaurant won't turn a pruft of limited seating space and social distancing measures. in the north bay now gradin resort and casino furlou about 150 of the workers remained on the job from security to maintenance and cleaning crews. the owncasino employs more than 2,000 people and an official told the press democrat the

casino is looking to potentially reopen in june and has a plan it's sent to governor newsom. well, southwest airlines is changing the way passengers will line up to board its flights to promote social distancing during the pandemic. because of the coronavirus southwest airlines is changing its notorious boarding process that some liken to a cattle call. passengers traditionally line up in groups of 30 but now southwest will ask passengers to queue in much smaller groups. it's also stopped serving onboard drinks and snacks and it's asking passengers to wear masks as well. united airlines warns major layoffs on the horizon. scott kirby said the company lost $1.7 billion in the first quarter and he worries the next quarter could be worse. 93,000 people work for united which a major employer in the area. it runs a hub and a large maintenance facility at sfo. well, it is easy to feel

livermore's mayor is outraged after a judge released a serial rape sekt due to concerns about covid-19 spreading inside the jail. dna evidence links the suspect to two cold cases from prosecutors say. livermore mayor issued a satement saying, but the bracelet only tracks his movements. it allows us to know where he has been. it does nothing to prevent new

crimes from being committed. a star witness in the hills bow row murder case will serve time in jail for passport fraud. he admitted to using a false name to obtain a passport. he was a witness in the murder case of keith green in 2016. defendant tiffany lee was found not guilty, and the jury deadlocked on a second defendant. prosecutors threw out his case after he contacted a defense witness or rather prosecutors threw treyor off the case after he threw a defense witness. they did not re-try him. take a look. a little white dog survived a 20 foot fall but then got stuck between two buildings in the mission district. the department tweeted these photos today. they were able to get the dog in a sack and hoist it up. the dog is doing just fine. all lanes of highway 101 in san francisco alalameda boulevard are back open.

cal trans crews completed a bridge deck construction project there ahead of schedule. both sides reopened early this morning. the work was originally set to take place over 3 weeks in july. cal trans moved up the project so crews could take advantage of the light traffic during our stay at home orders. are you feeling disconnected or lonely? it has become pretty common when staying at home and doctors offer us advice how to cope. a former surgeon general and author says we were meant to connect each other through mutual acts of service, for instance delivering a meal to a neighbor. ee suggest we be willing to accept help as well. other tips from murphy give others our full attention and remember everyone is going through tough times. when we do that we'll find we're better able to connect with others, be appreciative of the light and goodness around us. >> things like meditation, writing down what you're grateful for or just going outside for a few minutes or taking a breath are all ways to

get recentered. many retailers are taking a financial beating because of the pandemic uzbut business is booming for bay area bike shops as people turn to cycling to stay in shape. bike shops are low aed to stay open because many rely on bikes for essential travel. one bike shop owner saying, quote, we're basically selling bikes fa bikes faster than we can build tem. san francisco and oakland have both closed streets to provide places where cyclists, walkers and joggers can socially distance. who better than super heroes to help with the all in challenge. the offer being made by captain america now and some of the avengers cast that will benefit charity. and the son eventually came out for the first week of may, but wait until you see what's headed our way. meteorologist drew tuma up next with our acuue weather forecast. we're all picking up new hobbies these day

get allod of this high-flying salute today to front line responders and essential workers. the navy's blue angels and air force thunder birds flew over baltimore, washington, d.c., and atlanta. the commander and lead pilot of the thunder birds says the flyover are just your goodwill on behalf of the entire department of defense. abc 7's proegt thanks is recognizing a group of high school students giving up their day to raise money for the hungry. los altos high school kicked off the challenge this morning. students walk or run a single mile each hour for 24 hours straight. the high school's student body is pledging a dollar for every mile achieved. the creator said he got the idea to connect with friends during the quarantine. >> i wanted a way to stay active and to do something with my friends. but obviously not

meteorologist drew tuma. today was the cloudiest day we're going to have not only for this weekend but for the next seven days ahead. going forward it's not only brighter in terms of the forecast but also warmer weather makes a come back. live doppler 7 along with satellite eshowing you a fair amount of cloud cover overhead and we have a few sprinkles in the north bay. some pops of green and an isolated sprinkle due to a cold front currently moving through northern california. we were able to get a little bit of sunshine in the south bay earlier today. partly cloudy skies around san jose right now, and we do remain rather dry across much of the regionmism temperature-wise thanks to the limited sunshine we're kind of stuck in the 60s for today. 66 in oakland. a little bit warmer in the south bay where we were able to get a little bit of sunshine. 70 right now in san jose. much cooler in

live doppler 7 along with satellite showing you that cold front currently moving through california and you have showers stretching all the way up with this cold front and really the threat of a sprinkle in the north bay exists for the next 2 hours. so future weather we'll stop the clock at 8:30 tonight and there you can see around clover dale and ucaya we have a chance of an isolated sprinkle and that's it. as the front moves through it not only takes any showers but takes the clouds. tomorrow morning you're going to wake up to pretty bright skies. a nice afternoon is shaping up for sunday sunday. overnight tonight we have the closed early on, a chance of a sprinkle in the north bay. otherwise we'll find decreasing crowds and low 40s and low 50s over the next 12 hours. so sunday much brighter. expect a lot of sunshine and temperature-wise a degree or two
