can buy. what shoppers need to know. remarkable recovery. the paramedic in a coronavirus coma for 30 days. her message after beating the odds. and from loyal customers to generous cab drivers, the acts of everyday kindness inspiring america during these tough times. good monday morning, everyone. this will be a landmark week in the country's fight against the coronavirus. >> as of this morning, 32 states have lifted some restrictions related to the virus. today these seven states will take at least one step toward re-opening. it follows a challenging weekend in many states where warm weather sent people crowding into parks. >> overnight president trump lashed out at china for its role in the outbreak saying china made a, quote, huge mistake and didn't want to admit it. >> this week the experimental drug remdesivir is expected to arrive at hospitals across the country. early results show it could help

patients recover faster. in washington today history will be made at the supreme court. to keep their social distance the justice also hear oral arguments over a conference call. but we begin our coverage with more of america re-opening. here's abc's andrea fujii. >> reporter: the entire country tried to enforce social distancing as frustrations mount. >> six feet of distance. >> reporter: this texas park ranger tried to break up a crowd at lake austin shoved in the water. and in new york city, at least 100 social distancing summons issued including this confrontation between plainclothes police and a group on the street. the altercation escalating ending with one officer taking out his stun gun. the nypd saying the incident is under investigation. amid these simmering tensions governors struggling to determine the best path forward. mississippi halted plans to re-open after seeing a single day record of nearly 400 new cases on friday.

>> it was a one-day blip. >> reporter: the governor saying that spike was due to receiving a lot of test results all at one time and governors also taking different approaches on facial masks. new york governor andrew cuomo emphasizing their importance saying they're non-negotiable. >> it's not the most attractive garment ever created. so what? well, i don't like -- you know, it feels uncomfortable, unnatural. so what? >> reporter: but ohio's governor mike dewine backed down from his mandatory mask order. >> it became clear to me that that was just a bridge too far. that people were not going to accept the government telling them what to do. >> reporter: his fears already proven true in other states. in oklahoma one city reversing mask requirements after officials say store and restaurant employees were threatened with violence. in maryland, dozens gathered demanding businesses re-open despite a steady increase in cases. >> sadly we had far more people die yesterday in maryland than

we had protesters. >> reporter: in arizona at least three sheriffs say they will not fully enforce stay-at-home orders. >> i think you can make, you know, a clear claim that that's a constitutional violation. >> reporter: and the re-opening of beaches also posing a big dilemma. in california, l.a. and orange county beaches still completely shut down despite protests. >> would you like a mask? >> yes. >> reporter: officials handing out masks to beachgoers in massachusetts but in texas -- >> i did not expect it to be this crowded. >> reporter: -- beaches jam packed. no social distancing and no masks to be seen. this week several states will begin easing restrictions but in different ways. florida, missouri and kansas will start opening restaurants but at different capacities. indiana will start to open retail stores but at only 50% capacity, and new hampshire will start to allow more health services and elective procedures. kenneth and mona, back to you. the fbi arrested a colorado man accused of keeping several pipe bombs at his home.

they say he threatened to bring high-powered weapons to a protest in denver friday against the state's coronavirus restrictions. they say he's a member of anti-government militia. he is due in court today. an emotional tribute overnight for a colorado paramedic who died of the coronavirus in new york after volunteering his services. paul cary's casket arrived in denver and was escorted through the city by dozens of fire trucks and ambulances. earlier a procession of ambulances drove through new york to honor cary's sacrifice and his service. a new york paramedic who had the virus is back home after a month in a coma. 34-year-old christell cadet tells "the new york daily news" the last thing she remembers is telling doctors she couldn't breathe. she woke up a different person and appreciates life in a whole new way. lesley stahl has revealed she was hospitalized with the virus. she says some of her infected colleagues had no symptoms while

others had every symptom you can imagine. >> after two weeks at home in bed, weak, fighting pneumonia and really scared, i went to the hospital. i found an overworked, nearly overwhelmed staff. days later when i was wheeled out through a gauntlet of cheering medical workers. in the face of so much death, they celebrate their triumphs. >> she thanked the medical workers who took care of her. we turn now to president trump taking aim at china. he sat down last night to answer questions about the pandemic amid new allegations that china was hiding the severity of the virus so it could hoard medical supplies. the president also acknowledged the u.s. death toll could reach 100,000. abc's alex presha has the latest. >> reporter: this morning the trump administration doubling down on claims that the coronavirus came from a lab in wuhan, china. >> there is a significant amount of evidence that this came from that laboratory in wuhan. >> i think they made a horrible mistake, and they didn't want to admit it. >> reporter: it comes as the

president threatens new tariffs on china slamming the country for its response to the outbreak. >> the case could be made, they said, hey, look, this could have a huge impact on china and we might as well let the rest of the world -- >> reporter: obtained by abc news, the chinese government is accused of a cover-up. u.s. intelligence officials writing they intentionally concealed the severity of covid-19 from the international community in early january while it stockpiled medical supplies by increasing imports and decreasing exports. the shortage of gloves, masks and ventilators one of the top criticisms he faced during the pandemic but overnight the vice president addressed a different controversy head on, that infamous image of him touring a hospital without a mask. >> i didn't think it was necessary, but i should have worn the mask. >> reporter: as for the president -- >> we are very confident we'll have a vaccine at the end of the year. >> reporter: he's looking ahead. >> i think we'll have an incredible following year. you'll have your job and get

another job or you'll get a better job. >> reporter: but his chief economic adviser says it won't be an easy road. >> the outlook in the weeks and months ahead directly is not positive. we know the economy is still in a terrible contractnary phase. tremendous hardships everywhere. that's why we've put up several rescue packages. >> reporter: as for the second round of the paycheck protection program, more than 2 million loans have been given out totaling $175 billion, but as the senate returns to work today, some lawmakers are already pushing for a third round of relief funds. kenneth and mona. >> all right, alex there in d.c., thank you. time now for a look at your monday morning weather. these roofers in tennessee got caught off guard during a violent storm that rolled through nashville. widespread damage has been reported across the area and more than 200,000 power outages were reported overnight. incredible.

back now with the growing number of americans who need help putting food on the table. new york's mayor says up to 2 million people in the city could need food in the coming weeks. meanwhile, more farmers are struggling with a surplus of crops because restaurants and stores closed. farmers in washington state say they have 1 billion pounds of potatoes they can't sell. they're hoping the government will buy them and give them to food banks. and costco is the latest retailer to limit the amount of meat you can buy. shoppers will be allowed only three packages of beef, pork or poultry because of high demand. kroger and giant eagle are also limiting meat purchases. president trump has ordered processing plants to stay open despite virus outbreaks and even though experts say prices will likely rise and some variety will be missing from stores, they insist there's no need to buy more than one week's supply of meat. next to the future of life in america with covid-19. the virus is already forcing big changes at restaurants. airports, theaters and casinos and america's number one sport is about to see changes as well.

this morning from the casino floor to the skies to sports, a glimpse of what america's return to reality could look like. the nfl is planning to release a full schedule late they are week with a start date of september 10th and with fans reportedly in attendance. >> i think it's important to make fans feel safe. >> reporter: tom garfinkel is the ceo of the miami dolphins. he tells "good morning america" they're making changes to hard rock stadium to make it the gold standard for safety. >> we've reduced capacity and have people -- sets of two seats or four seats six feet away and thought of everything from parking spaces to ingress and egress and security and keeping it cashless so it's touchless. >> reporter: now mgm is reportedly pitching a plan to the nba to finish its season in las vegas. according to "the new york times," the proposal says 24 courts could be built at the mgm convention centers and players, their families and staff would stay at the resort.

meanwhile on the vegas strip, gambling revenue at some casinos was down 97% last month. this is what poker tables could look like when they re-open. glass on three sides separating players from the dealer. on the big screen some theaters showing movies again like this one in texas are now using caution tape to block off rows and enforce social distancing while asking customers about any symptoms they might have. >> if the answer is yes, we'll politely ask to you come back and refund your money. >> reporter: at the airport this could be the future for some travelers. a full body disinfectant box being used in hong kong to fully clean passengers and their clothes. on board your next flight, all major u.s. airlines have blocked some or all middle seats for social distancing. that's prompted one aircraft seat designer to come up with this idea. a rear facing middle seat with a clear barrier for protection. another rendering shows partitions between all seats, an idea for the future. and beginning today, united, delta and jetblue will require

they pollenate one in three pieces of food we eat so we have to protect these little guys. >> that thing looks scary and those hornets are currently in washington state. scientists are trying to round them up before they attack the bee population. we turn now to a new warning about the coronavirus. new york's governor says a potentially stronger strain of the virus is now hitting. earlier i spoke with dr. imran ali. i asked him who is still getting infected weeks after stay-at-home orders were put in place, and will different strains matter when it comes to a vaccine? >> the coronavirus, the one that's circulating right now, has about 30,000 base pairs as part of its genome, and these different strains, even the most different strain that's out there, has only 11 base pairs that are different, so the strains are different but not that different from each other, and he was talking about a west coast strain and an east coast strain, and these are developing because people from europe came

to the east coast, and that's why the strain of virus was different there from the west coast where people came directly from china. but overall for a vaccine, i don't think there's going to be much of a difference because the strains are not that different from each other. >> the fda has granted emergency use authorization for new antibody tests. what makes this different than other antibody tests, and how does it work? >> mona, this is a game changer because this test is going to be super specific because coronaviruses are very broad. the common cold can be caused by a certain flavor of the coronavirus, but what this test does is specific to the coronavirus that causes covid-19, and so we can really understand if people had antibodies to the covid-19 causing coronavirus, because you and i probably had a cold, and we have coronavirus antibodies floating in our blood, but this is specific to the antibodies to covid-19. >> dr. ali, recently there was a surge in cases reported well

after stay-at-home orders were put into place. we know a lot of medical professionals and essential workers are vulnerable, but who else is making up these newly infected people? >> well, as of this weekend, we have approximately 20,058 cases nationwide from nursing homes, and a lot of these nursing homes, at least in the northeast, are being tested more broadly. so we are going to see numbers rise despite some of the restrictions in place, but this does not mean that the restrictions are not working. this is a tried and tested proven way to prevent further exponential spread of this virus. so keep staying socially distant but you can always connect with your loved ones through facetime and other ways. >> great advice. our thanks to dr. ali. >> thank you, mona. coming up, a whole new way to get a professional haircut. plus, a wild idea. the animal trainer putting on a show from home with a lion. >> oh, my.

today. management said the clubhouse will remain closed, so they want to make sure that people still stay socially distanced apart and no contact payment will be made. so, they're hoping to make it as touch free as possible. but you will see golfers teeing off today. >> i am very anxious to get back out there, yeah. i played in napa a couple times since they opened a couple weeks ago, but this is a great course. >> it's not just golf that will kick back up today. you'll also see construction projects being allowed to fire back up today. plant nurseries and landscaping companies. those have been ordered to shut down, but they will be allowed to reopen today and then you'll also see the car wash allowed to open. so, here we go starting to roll out, you know, ease up on the shelter-in-place restrictions. but we are still to stay home when we can. re
