counties are easing sheltering in place restrictions. the activities you will be able to do again. and -- >> some new rules take effect in the airport today in order to keep everyone safer. is it enough to persuade you that it is okay to fly soon? good morning, everyone. it is monday, may 4th. good morning, reggie. >> hi, kumasi. and hello to all of our friends out there. thanks for being with us on this monday morning. we'll check in now with mike nicco and a look at our day ahead. hey, mike. >> good morning, reggie, kumasi. may the fourth be with you. i was the first one to say it. here's a look at live doppler 7 and it is dry. low humidity and clear conditions and pretty cool out. right now 52 in the east bay hills and that's one of our warmer temperatures. 40s. that's what you need to dress for if you're heading out and 50s at the coast and 58 to 63 from noon to 4:00. 71 to 79 inland with a few

passing high clouds this afternoon. we're back in the 50s and 60s by 7:00. we'll take a look at that robust heat and talk about how long it lasts in the accuweather seven-day forecast. >> thanks, mike. bay area counties are easing restrictions to their shelter in place orders. while napa and sonoma have eased some restrictions, alameda, santa clara, san francisco and marin counties are now joining today. across all counties, construction projects can resume. so can real estate transactions. outdoor businesses like landscaping and nurseries can also get back to work. when it comes to outdoor sports, there are some conditions. you cannot share equipment and you have to be able to maintain social distance. more than a dozen san mateo county parks will reopen after being closed for more than a month and that includes the crystal springs regional trail and. county officials say that visitors have to maintain social distance including hiking single

file on narrow trails, playgrounds, picnic areas and bathrooms will still be closed, though. some parking lots may also be closed. san mateo county is also taking measures to keep people from flocking to the coast. the revised shelter-in-place order taking place today only allows visitors within ten miles. we have seen signs warning people that if they are more than five miles from home, they need to turn around. hundreds of people have been cited for going to going to the beach in pacifica. chances know many of you are not flying this week and who knows how long before you go to the airport but you must bring something the next time you go on a trip. julian glover is live for us at san jose maneta airport. >> good morning, reggie. the bottom line is that we know so many of these airlines are trying to convince american passengers that it is safe to fly again and safety a top

priority. starting today here at san jose mineta and you'll be required to wear face masks and joining oakland and sfo in requiring those folks who are coming to the airport to wear those face masks. the new requirement here at sjc applies to employees and travelers. anyone with trouble breathing or children are exempt from the requirement. you'll be required to keep it on if you're traveling with delta, united and jetblue and a week from now southwest and american airlines will join that list requiring passengers and crew to wear cloth masks or homemade face coverings. >> do you feel it is safer or not necessary? >> i think it is what it is. and if it takes us wearing a little mask in order to travel, then so be it. >> other changes you'll see here at mineta san jose. crews are regularly cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces throughout the day and giving

the bathrooms attention every two hours. deep cleaning areas at night a spokesman tells us. i an effort to get passengers back in the sky, most american airlines at this point have eliminated all or if not all most of those middle seats on flights to try to give people some extra space. for now, reporting live this morning at sjc, julian glover, abc7 news. >> julian, thank you. after more than a month of sheltering in place, many people in the bay area are getting a little antsy. some of them are starting to leave their homes more. abc7 news reporter j.r. stone talked to a doctor and a survivor with a message for all of us. >> reporter: doris covid-19 survivor is referring to the crowds of people seen in san francisco's great meadow park in fot mason on sunday and the crowds at deloris park on sunday. a lot of people out and about instead of staying at home. >> this is also my mental health and i'm trying to stay sane

during all of that. >> reporter: don't tell that to block who says she still can't go on a long walk. >> it's not a laughing matter and, i mean, i was on oxygen. i was one of the lucky ones because i was only in the hospital for five days. >> reporter: county statistics show that icu hospital visits have not risen in the bay area and deaths here are lower when compared to other areas of the state. but dr. fahemi medical director at usf medical hospital say not so fast. >> we are in the midst of potentially dodging a huge surge in the bay area and, you know, now is really not the time to just sort of take a victory lap. >> reporter: ask park goers in san francisco about that. they'll tell you that they need to get out for their own health and don't have a yard or roof like some people. >> when you're out here, you can stay, try to stay six feet apart. but like at the same time, we've been in quarantine for weeks and weeks and weeks. and it is hard.

>> what we really recommend is that we -- people avoid kind of giving in to the frustration and the boardm and deciding to go out and congregate in parks. >> i hope for everybody not to have to get covid and not to have to go through it. wear your masks. >> reporter: j.r. stone, abc7 news. well, the trump administration is blaming china for unleashing the coronavirus pandemic. they say u.s. intel shows the virus was not manmade or genetically modified but also enormous evidence that it originated in a lab in wuhan. jobina fortson has more on this. jobina? >> good morning, kumasi. yes, top u.s. officials are putting the blame squarely on a chinese lab for spreading covid-19 around the world. president trump says he believes china, quote, made a horrible mistake and they didn't want to admit it. he also says that his administration will present evidence on china's involvement in the spread of the virus at the right time.

>> we're looking at exactly where it came from, who it came from, how it happened separately and also scientifically. so, we're going to be able to find it. >> the u.s. intel community assessment says it was not made intentionally in a lab, but it's investigating if it was, quote, the result of an accident. homeland security reports obtained by abc news accuses china of a cover up and says the country misled the world about the policy for a pandemic while stockpiling masks and other supplies for itself. reggie, i'll send it over to you. >> thank you. new signs of hope in the global race to get a covid-19 vaccine. a team at oxford believes they'll know by next month whether their vaccine works. if proven safe and effective, the makers say it could be available as early as september. months ahead of other trials. >> we're pretty sure we'll get a signal by june about whether this works or not. this is likely to be a seasonal

coronavirus vaccine. >> at least eight human trials are under way around the world, including two in the u.s. speeding the vaccine to, mat has its risks with side effects and potentially death. the former head of the fda says there's no guarantee any of these vaccines will work. and it's mostly clear along the east bay this morning. good morning to you. we're at about 5:08 on this monday. it's a little cooler around castro valley and most of us around 58 to 42 here. let's look at some other neighborhoods. mid to upper 40s along the peninsula out to the coast and down into the south bay. look at those upper 30s in the north bay. that's a little cooler than it should be for this time of year. we do have milder temperatures in san francisco, antioch and brentwood low to mid 50s there. these temperatures are up to eight degrees cooler than yesterday morning and this will be our coolest morning this week. 48 as we look down the embarcadero from our roof

camera. pretty good today. low humidity, comfortable conditions and little breezy, especially around the bay. san francisco bay during the afternoon hours. and maybe the only drawback if you're out and about. 50s through 9:00 in the east bay valleys and near 70 already at 11:00 and mid to upper 70s for several hours from noon through 5:00. a few high clouds and sunshine. as far as the south bay goes we jump from 47 to 57 to 66 to 73. quite a jump here. almost 25 to 30 degrees as we hit the mid 70s in the afternoon hours and our last stop will be the peninsula where we jump from 47 at 7:00 to upper 60s at noon to low to mid 70s for several hours under a mostly cloudy sky this afternoon. more on the warming trend coming up next. here's jobina with a look at the morning commute. hi, jobina. >> hi, mike, thank you very much. good morning, everyone. overall for essential workers if you're heading out the door this morning, i want you to be aware of road construction out there. a number of projects under way right now. a live look in oakland at our

880 at the coliseum camera there so you can see the conditions are pretty empty right now, but there is some road construction in the area. so, it could potentially slow you down as the morning commute gets a little further under way. between 23rd avenue and 29th avenue on 880 in the southbound direction, there will be various lane closures until about 7:00 a.m. just be aware of that. if you ride vta in the south bay, you must wear a face mask or face covering starting today. anyone boarding vta vehicles will have to comply while also following social distancing requirements. bus and light rail operations will also be wearing coverings, face coverings. there will be posters and recorded messages on vehicles and platforms to remind all of the riders. reggie and kumasi. >> thanks, jobina. one major retailer becomes the first to file for chapter 11 during the pandemic. what it means for customers. the supreme court is adapting to the coronavirus.

something like this. the court said it will hear ten arguments remotely that includes disputes over birth control access, the electoral college and whether president trump can keep his tax records from investigators. for the first time, the live audio will be available to the public. the coronavirus is forcing big changes from restaurants to airports to movie theaters to casino. now america's number one sport is about to see a big makeup, too. here's kenneth moton. >> reporter: from the casino floor to the skies to sports. a glimpse of what america's return to normal could look like. the nfl is planning to release a full schedule with a start date of september 10th and with fans reportedly in attendance. >> it's important to make fans feel safe. >> reporter: the ceo of the miami dolphins and he tells "good morning america" they are making changes to hard rock stadium to make it the gold standard for safety.

>> what we have done is significantly reduced capacity and cashless. >> reporter: mgm is pitching a plan to the nba to finish the 24 courts could be built at the mgm convention centers and players, their families and staff would stay at the resort. meanwhile on the biggest strip, gambling revenue at some casinos was down 97% last month. this is what poker tables could reopen glass on three sides separating players from the dealer. on the big screen, some theaters showing movies again like this one in texas are now using caution tape to block off rows and enforce social distancing while asking customers about any symptoms they have. >> if that answer is yes, we'll politely ask you to come back and refund your money. >> reporter: a disinfectant box to fully clean passengers and their clothes. aboard your next flight, all major u.s. airlines have blocked some or all middle seats for social distancing.

kenneth moton, new york. this is some good news for recent grads, some big companies are not giving up on internships, they are just going virtual. the scope of the jobs will change, but the focus on short, specific projects. several bay area companies plan to offer virtual internships this summer. >> hello, here is your delivery. >> isn't that cute? a market outside of washington, d.c., is experimenting with robots that are made by san francisco-based starship technologies. customers order everything on an app and a store employee loads it into the robot and there it goes. it gets close to the house and it sends a text. the robot sends a text and this market has been in the neighborhood for more than 100 years and the owner says that it was important to find a way to keep serving their customers. >> if any of us got sick, the store would have to close. it's always here for the

neighborhood. we sort of have that reputation that we're always there for them. it's really important to figure out how we can do that this time, too. >> she said the response has been positive with some people thinking that the robots are kind of fun, they're kind of cute and others who appreciate the social distancing that they provide. reggie, are you okay with these robots? >> well, i have seen these robots going around. i saw them in berkeley going around. >> and -- >> i'm fine with it. i don't see it as a threat yet. >> i'm okay with these. do not make that face at the robot. it can see you. >> it can text me. >> it can text you. now, reggie. >> not worried about this robot at all. not compared to the other ones we've seen and how aggressive and all the interesting things they can do. but, no, this one, it's all good. got good in its heart. let's take a look at what's going on in the east bay hills.

hi, everybody. 52 degrees this morning. look at your accuweather highlights. sunny, seasonal and a little breezy and little clear and not nearly as chilly as this morning. we have upper 30s in the north bay valleys and hot temperatures will taper by the weekend. look at today, very comfortable. 72 to about 75 from sunnyvale and san jose up toer 70s in morgan hill and gilroy. head up the peninsula and drop down to the mid 60s and head towards millbrae and as you keep heading farther north, you can see where we have mid 60s in downtown and san francisco and about 51 to 68 along the coast and little bit of sunshine today. how about that. 71 in vallejo the cool spot to 78 at santa rosa at one of the warm spots. upper 60s in hayward,

ndro. as you head into the valleys, 75 to 78. tonight mid 40s with just a few clouds out there. this area of low pressure that will keep the onshore breeze in check and once that low pressures, high pressure takes over and already above average wednesday and then we get a little too hot inland. low to mid 90s thursday, friday and saturday and some 80s reaching the coast and the coast, i should say. check out mother's day. all going to be good for mom. >> mom deserves the best. that's good. well, a bay area bike clinic suffers a set back and its efforts to reopen how you can get back in track after a break in. the last thing i want to tell you about are murder hornets. but here we are. the invasive species has been spotted on the west coast. we'll explain what they

small craft advisory and also means we are going to have gusty conditions along our bridges. but it won't be quite as perpendicular as normal. more of a west wind. look what happens wednesday. temperatures start to take off and look at thursday, low to mid 90s in the east bay and and even some 80s showing up around the bay and then the hottest day will be friday with near 90 in the north bay and the south bay. low to mid 90s in the east bay. look at those low to mid 80s around the bay and low to mid 70s in san francisco. quite toasty, kumasi. new overnight, the new company behind j. crew and madewell filed for bankruptcy. it came to an agreement with lenders for $1.6 billion of debt into equity. a bankruptcy filing does not mean it will go out of business, though. 500 stores are closed because of the pandemic, the company expects to stay fully operational. j. crew is the first major

retailer to file for chapter 11 and before this it was struggling to adapt to changing consumer habits. other big names like j.c. and neiman marcus have been struggling. donating to organizations that are focused on feeding vulnerable seniors during the covid-19 pandemic. the funding will support 15 organizations in northern and central california like meals on wheels and council on aging in sonoma county. part of a $1 million commitment to those facing food insecurity and small businesses that have been challenged by the public health crisis. may happens to be mike mobi months and researchers are seeing a surge in demand and a clinic has suffered a real set back at its reopening. the san jose bike clinic sells, rents and fixes bicycle for anybody that needs help. the shop was planning to reopen

in the coming weeks and someone broke into their building and stole bikes and specialty tools. spoke to a volunteer who says it hurts the community. >> we can still have people come into the shop and times we'll have to say, sorry, we can't help you now because we are waiting for some of our tools to get replaced. >> the shop still plans to reopen on thursday. they rely on their nonprofit status and donations to stay afloat. you can find a link to their go fund me page on abc7news.com. in today's "gma first look" an invasive species have scientists on high alert and they are called murder hornets. here's abc's will reave. >> reporter: in "gma first look" it is blowing up your social media all weekend. what is the murder hornet. >> the biggest ones will get to two inches. >> reporter: it can be up to five times larger than a honey

bee and stinger strong enough and its venom can be deadly. these hornets kill dozens of people in japan every year and now cited in the u.s. these images taken in december in washington state as summer approaches, scientists are racing against the clock to track them down and stop them from destroying honeybeehives. ted mcfall is a bee keeper. he says the beast decimated his entire colony. so what does it actually feel like to be stung by one. coming up at 7:00, we'll go one-on-one with someone who experienced it first hand. with your "dwgma first look" i' will. >> i was reading this over the weekend and it says they can fly 20 miles an hour. am i supposed to run? >> just like the coyotes. >> this might be worse than the coyotes. >> this is the last thing that we needed.

recovering from coronavirus is far from a return to normal but the region is now experimenting with an easy of our stay-at-home restrictions. the easing begins for the six counties in orange. separately sonoma, napa and solano already eased some of their guidelines. any construction projects, including certain businesses that operate outdoors, gardening work as well as car washes and certain outdoor activities like golfing are back in play. abc7 news reporter amy hollyfield is live at the golf course in san francisco breaking all of this down. amy? >> hi, kumasi, this sign comes down today. golf courses have been closed but today they can reopen and golfers are thrilled. not just golf. tennis can start again today, skate parks can open. construction projects can fire back up. plant nurseries and landscaping companies can open back up and

car washes can open. starting today, you can get a car wash. now, interior vacuuming is not allowed because of social distancing restrictions and only one person at a time is allowed inside the cashier area. a wcar wash told us he can only bring back 25 of his 60 employees, it's a partial reopening but a start. >> after a month and a half and we are happy to be back. >> while the prisidio golf course was closed to golfers they opened it to families that walked to walk and run around. that changes today. golfers will be back. some restrictions. the clubhouse will not reopen and when you pay, a no-touch experience. so, there will still be an aw e awareness that social distance is required. people need to be cautious and try to slow the spread of the virus, but a little bit of

normalcy returning to life today. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> amy, thank you. two more california counties defying governor newsom's shelter-in-place order. yuba and sutter counties are allowing businesses to reopen. both counties will require facive coiface i coverings in public. neither had anyone hospitalized with the virus in two weeks. modoc county reopened on friday with officials working with the governor's office. the push to reopen is being heard in several other pockets of the state with many local shop owners saying they are thankful to get back to work. in fresno county, we go to the city of parlier one of the first cities to allow barbershops and hair salons to reopen and that decision comes with a mixed reaction. >> trying to take just appointments. the good thing is, i think people need to know that they

need to call so that way we can regulate how many people are coming in and how many are leaving. >> to open business without adequate testing and without having the prevalence and knowledge of seeing how much really the city has been infected. >> about 200 people rallied in vaccaville yesterday to reopen the state. if necessary, organizers say they'll be back to do it again next weekend. this week more than 30 states will at least partially or fully lift their shelt ee er shelter-at-home orders. we'll bring in jobina with more on that. >> thank you, reggie. good morning. as more states start easing their restrictions, local leaders are now dealing with the lingering effects the virus is having on public safety. in new york city, at least 100 social distancing summons were issued over the weekend as warm weather brought people outside. governors are struggling to chart the best path forward in reopening. ohio's mike dewine announced a

phased approach to reopening. manufacturing and construction will resume today. retail businesses can reopen next monday. he decided to rescind the mandatory face mask order, as well. >> it became clear to me that was a bridge too far. people were not going to accept the government telling them what to do. and so we put out, you know, dozens and dozens of orders. that was one that it just went too far. >> in several states in the northeast have announced a partnership to buy personal protective gear and medical equipment together, as well as efforts to increase testing. president trump says he wants a coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year, even if it comes from another country. reggie, i'll send it back over to you. >> jobina, thank you. a lot of questions surrounding opening up too soon. medical correspondent dr. jennifer ashton talked about the dangers of easing some of these rules. >> this virus is not going

anywhere, so, it's a matter of learning how to live with it until a point at which a vaccine is available or certainly better treatments are available. so, that's the foundation on which all of this reopening has to be predicated. >> dr. ashton says researchers are looking into places like asia that have reopened but also started to see more cases. that can help determine when states and cities can start to loosen restrictions. happening today, california lawmakers return to sacramento for the start of a new legislative session. they have a full plate to discuss how the state plans to handle this pandemic moving forward. calling lawmakers back to the capitol building, but a handful plan to stay at home just to avoid the health risk. several precautions are being taken including temperature checks and lawmakers limited to having one staff person with them. the pandemic led to the first scheduled work stoppage in 158 years. free testing begins today for one san rafael neighborhood.

marin county will offer it to those who live in the canal which is one of the most diverse and densely populated. they will do 100 tests a day and people can make an appointment first and do that through the county's website. covid-19 site for any resident regardless if they're showing symptoms or not. the two sites located in santa rosa and petaluma. unlike a lot of the testing sites we're seeing, no drive' thru option here. appointments are required and could be made online and also over the phone and we have a link to where you can do that on our website. ab abc7news.com. new this morning, an amazing act of generosity to help out our frontline workers. a donor just gave dominican hospital a million dollars and that money is going to be spent on bonuses for all the employees there. so, according to the ap, that

55 to about 66 if you're heading out 7:00 for an evening walk. look where all the dangerous heat is going to be tuesday through friday up to 108 degrees. we'll be in the mid 90s but nothing like the 100 they're seeing in palm springs. mid-80s through the central valley. let's get back to kumasi. costco is requiring that you wear a face covering inside all of its stores. it doesn't apply to kids under 2 or people who can't wear masks because of medical conditions. masks are already required in essential businesses like costco in most bay area counties. also going into effect today you're now limited on the amount of meat you can buy. members can get a maximum of three beef, pork or poultry products. uber is making plans to require riders and drivers to wear face coverings and developing technology to make sure they're doing it.

they approved this new policy last week to make sure it is being followed, uber is figuring out a way if drivers are wearing masks or face coverings before they go online and start accepting trips. the company is looking into ways to hold riders accountable. the requirement is expected to roll out in the coming weeks. the city of hayward is handing out another 10,000 masks to local and essential businesses after making a similar donation last month. they include grocery stores and food production and delivery businesses and restaurants and hardware stores. the masks aren't medical or surgical grade which are needed for the health care workers. businesses have to operate within hayward to get the masks and call the city council covid hotline to pick them up. today kicks off teacher appreciation week and, wow, what a year it is to be a teacher. of course, teachers are doing most of their work right now online with students because of their covid-19 pandemic. the crisis is causing teachers to take special steps like sending art kits in the mail and
