it is that fun time of the year when we all remember star wars and what it means to us. let's talk about weather first. and we've got clear conditions out there, extremely dry air and a lack of cloud cover and that has allowed temperatures to cool off rather nicely and as we take a look quickly at your day planner for today. mst of us in the 30s and few 40s in the north bay valleys. you have to dress a little warmer than normal for may the 4th. and the rest of us will hit the 70s and few upper 60s still hanging around at 7:00. pretty comfortable day. not going to be that way wednesday, thursday and friday. i'll show you the heat. it's coming in the forecast. here's cuimosity. >> bay area counties are easing some restrictions to shelter-in-place orders today while napa and solona have already eased restrictions. contra costa, alameda, santa

cara, san mateo and san francisco are starting today. outdoor businesses like landscaping and nurseries can also get back to work and when it comes to outdoor sports, there are some conditions. you can't share equipment and you have to be able to maintain social distance. more than a dozen san mateo county parks will reopen after being closed for a month and that includes the crystal springs regional trail and hunter county park. county park officials say that visitors have to maintain social distance, including hiking single file on the trials that are narrow, playgrounds, picnic areas and bathroom areas will be closed and parking lots may also be closed. san mateo county is also taking more measures to keep people from flocking to the coast. the revised shelter-in-place allows visitors within ten miles. we've seen those signs on the road warning people if they are more than five miles from home, they need to turn around. hundreds of people have been cited for going to the beach in

pacifica during the stay-at-home order. chances are most of us are not flying right now, but just in case you do need to go to the airport, you have to bring a certain something along with you. and some of these changes are just starting this morning. let's go to abc7 news reporter julian glover live for us in san jose mineta. >> good morning, reggie. american airlines are trying to convince american passengers it is safe to fly. safety is a top concern for everyone and that's why starting today, face masks are now required at mineta san jose and oakland international in requiring passengers to have those face masks on. now, the new requirements again here at sjc applies to employees andival trae and travelers. children under 6 and anyone with trouble breathing are exempt. you are required to keep them on if you're traveling with delta, united airlines or jetblue. a week from now on next monday, southwest, spirit and american airlines will join the list

requiring those passengers and crew to wear cloth masks or homemade face coverings. >> you feel safer do you feel it may not be necessary? >> i think it is what it is. if it takes just wearing a little mask in order to travel, then so be it. >> other changes you'll see here at mineta san jose. crews regularly cleaning and disinfecting those high-touch surfaces throughout the day and also giving the bathrooms extra attention every two hours and deep cleaning public areas at night. a spokesman tells us. in order to get the passengers back in the sky, most american airlines at this point are blocking all or most of the middle seats during booking to try to give people some extra space to spread out. for now we're reporting live at mineta san jose this morning, i'm julian glover, abc7 news. thank you, julian. the global airline industry is set to lose $300 billion and travelers want to know, will we

start seeing higher fares. united airline says not right now. >> people are thinking flying right now go to united.com because there are some good deals available and we know people are looking for some additional flexibility in these times, so if people book before the end of the month, they actually can change without paying a fee. so, we're trying to do everything we can to make it possible for people who are interested in traveling to actually do so. >> united is confident that the demand for airline tickets will recover. the airline says people will start buying flights again soon because they want to do traveling and have interpersonal connections and relationships. it's unclear whether fares in the future will be higher. reggie, i'll send it over to you. >> jobina, thank you. here in the bay area business to the icu ward has not risen and the amount of deaths are low and other bigger cities in the country. but doctors say this is still not a time to celebrate. let's take a look at what

happened over the weekend. this is san francisco's great meadow park at ft. mason and you're also going to take a look at dolores park yesterday. a lot of people out and about instead of staying at home and how many masks do you see? so, doctors say this is not a time to ease what we have been doing. one coronavirus survivor is now pleading with people to listen to the health order. >> yeah, it's not a laughing matter. and i mean i was on oxygen. i was one of the lucky ones because i was only in the hospital for five days. >> doctors say they are starting to see people become lax around family and friends while still keeping their distance from others. they say this is dangerous because even expanding your exposure that little amount puts you at a much higher risk. the trump administration is blaming china for unleashing the coronavirus pandemic. president trump says he believes the country, quote, made a horrible mistake and they don't

want to admit it. he also said his administration will present evidence on china's involvement in the spread of the virus when it's the right time. >> we're looking at exactly where it came from, who it came from and how it happened separately and also scientifically. we'll be able to fund. >> the u.s. intelligence community assessment says it was not made intentionally in a lab, but it's investigating if it was the result of an accident. a homeland security report obtained by abc news accuses china of a cover up. it says the country misled the world while stockpiling face masks and other supplies for itself. new signs of hope in a global race for covid-19 vaccine. they will know by next month whether their vaccine works. if it's proven safe and effective, the irk withers say it could be available as early as september and that is months ahead of other trials. >> we're pretty sure we'll get a signal by june about whether this works or not. this is likely to be a seasonal

the u.s. they grow up to two inches long. so, they're huge compared to a honey bee. five times the size. and the stinger is strong enough to pierce through a beekeeper suit. its venom can be deadly. these hornets kill dozens of people in japan every year and devastate beehives in a matter of hours. >> the mandibles, there we go. you can sort of see them. pretty large. they're very, very sharp. that's what they use to decapitate bees and then mash up the thorax into a meatball they call it to fly it back to their larv larvae. >> this just keeps getting worse. experts are trying to track them down and destroy them before they can potentially kill off much of america's bee population and, of course, if they did, that would have a devastating impact eon our food supply. coming up at 7:00 on "gma" what it feels to be stung by one,

with sunshine. 58 to 62 degrees today. 66 in downtown san francisco and as you head northbound we warm from 73 in san rafael and 76 in napa and 78 in santa rosa. along the east bay shore, a handful of other 60s to low 70s and east bay valleys, mid 70s to even a few upper 70s. now, tonight is not quite as chilly as this morning and the humidity won't be quite as low and we've got a changing of the air mass just a little bit as far as temperature. 45 to 51 degrees. here is a look at our afternoon high clouds streaming in. still going to be a day where you need the sunglasses. keep the seasonal sea breezes on us and that's where the temperatures hold steady today and tomorrow. sea breezes let off the accelerator and look at the heat hit the accelerator. low to mid 90s thursday, friday, saturday inland and 80s around the bay and even 70s at the coast. have a great day, guys.

to upper 70s in our inland neighborhoods under a mostly sunny sky. we'll talk about that heat wave coming to our especially inland neighborhoods in the accuweather seven-day forecast. here's kumasi. first test on the path to recovering from the coronavirus. it's far from a return to normal, but the region now experiments with an easing of our stay-at-home restrictions. the new rules kick in today for the six counties shaded in orange. separately napa, sonoma have already eased some of their guidelines. here is now what is allowed as of today. any construction projects including certain businesses that operate outdoors, gardening work as well as car washes and certain outdoor activities are back in play. amy hollyfield is live at the presidio golf course in san francisco to break it all down for us. good morning, amy. >> hi, good morning. some golfers are already showing up here even though it's very early. they are very excited. glad to have golf back again after being shut down during this pandemic to try to slow

down the spread of the coronavirus. the presidio golf course had opened the greens to runners and walkers and families who wanted to run around out here while golf was banned, but that ends now. the golfers are coming back. the clubhouse will still be closed and paying will be a touch-free experience. as we try to slow down the spread of the virus, but golfers are excited to swing those clubs again. >> i am very anxious to get back out there. yeah, i played in napa a couple times since they opened a couple weeks ago. but this is a great course. >> construction projects will also be allowed to start back up today. plant nurseries and landscaping companies can open back up and car washes can open. starting today, you can get a carwash but interior vacuuming is still not allowed because of social distancing restrictions and only one person will be allowed back into that cash register area. one car wash told us they would

only be allow or able to bring back 20 of their 65 employees because it's going to be, you know, smaller business right now. but at least it's a start. at least restrictions are slowly starting to be lifted. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> amy, thank you. also as of today, two more counties are defying the governor's shelter-at-home order. yuba and sutter counties just north of sacramento are allowing businesses to reopen. both counties will still recover face coverings in public. state data shows neither county has had anyone hospitalize would the virus in two weeks. also set to consider reopening tomorrow and modoc opened on friday with officials working with the governor's office. this week more than 30 states have or are about to reopen at least part of their economy. abc7 news anchor jobina fortson is looking into the push and pull between easing these

restrictions and extending them. hi, jobina. >> hi, reggie, good morning. yes, as more states start easing on restrictions, local leaders are deeding with the effects covid-19 is having on public safety. in new york city, at least 100 social distancing summons were issued over the weekend as warm weather brought people outside. governors are struggling to chart the best path forward in reopening. ohio's mike dewine announced a phased approach to reopening. manufacturing and construction will resume today and retail businesses can reopen next monday. he decided to rescind the mandatory face mask order, as well. >> it became clear to me that that was a bridge too far. people were not goegto accept the government telling them what to do. and so we put out, you know, dozens and dozens of orders. that was one that just went too far. >> and several states in the northeast have announced a partnership to buy personal

protective gear and medical equipment together as well as efforts to increase testing. president trump says he wants a coronavirus vaccine by the end of the year, even if it comes from another country. reggie? >> all right, jobina, thank you. so many questions surrounding opening up too soon. abc news chief medical correspondent dr. jennifer ashton has some answers about easing some of these rules. >> i think we have to remember that this virus is not going anywhere. so, it's a matter of learning how to live with it until a point at which a vaccine is available or certainly better treatments are availabe. so, that's the foundation on which all of this reopening has to be predicated. >> dr. ashton always says places are looking into places like asia that have already reopened and then started to see more cases. she says that can help determine when states and cities should be loosening restrictions. california lawmakers return to sacramento for the start of the legislature today.

they have a full plate of items to discuss and how it plans to handle this pandemic moving forward. anthony rendon is calling lawmakers back to the capitol building but several stay at home to avoid the health risk. temperature checks and lawmakers will be limited to having one staff person with them. the pandemic led to the first unscheduled work stoppage in 158 years. free testing begins today for one san rafael neighborhood. marin county will offer it in the canal which is one of the diverse and densely populated areas of the county. the site on francisco boulevard and should be able to do more than 100 tests every day. people will need to make an appointment first and they can do that through the county's website. in the north bay sonoma county will open two testing sites tomorrow for any resident regardless if they're showing symptoms or not. the two sites located in santa rosa and petaluma. unlike many testing sites, no drive-thru option.

you have to get out of your car if you want to be tested. appointments online or on the phone and we have a link on our website. foster city-based gilead says its drug remdesivir is expected to go to hospitals this week. the fda approved the drug for emergency use on friday follows a recent study by the institute of health that found the drug shortens recovery time for some coronavirus patients by four days. gilead ceo said it's ready to send its entire supply of the drug by this week. >> we are firmly focused on getting this medicine to the most urgent patients around the country here in the united states. and we intend to get that to patients in the early part of next week and beginning to work with the government, which will determine which cities are most vulnerable and where the patients are that need this medicine. >> gilead said its supply is enough to treat roughly up to 200,000 patients.

and new this morning, an act of extreme generosity and kindness to help out all our health care workers. an anonymous donor has just given an enormous check to dominican in santa cruz. this is a million dollars that will help our front line workers. according to the ap, all that money is going to be divided up amongst full-time and part-time workers. full-time workers will get $800 in a bonus this month and part-time workers will get 600 bucks bonus. the donation came with a note and that note reads, thank you for standing up and staying up to care for our community. round of applause to whoever that is who gave that amount of money. all right, so, first -- now coronavirus is changing something else. what the store is limiting starting today. and you're taking a live look at the big board at new york stock exchange this morning starting down 330 point and another update on how the markets are doing next. also, celebrating may 4th while sheltering at home.

today 100 for them. 81 in los angeles and mid 80s through the central valley and tahoe about 64 degrees. all right, reggie, i'm really interested in this story. i've been thinking all weekend, what did they do in l.a. at the beaches? >> well, i'm about to show you. los angeles county not messing around when it comes to people getting off the beaches. take a look at this show of force over the weekend. by the sheriff's department and parks bureau these deputies were in malibu patrolling on horseback and atvs and #saferathome to remind people we are not done flattening the curve just yet. the push to reopen is being heard in several other pockets of our state with many shop owners saying they are thankful to be back at work. the city of parlier one of the first cities to allow barb barbershops and hair salons to reopen and, of course, not everyone is on board. >> we're trying to take just appointments so the good thing

is i think people need to know they can call and regulate how many people are coming in and how many people are leaving. >> to open up business without adequate testing and having the prevalence of knowledge of seeing how much really the city has been infected. >> about 200 people rallied in vaccaville yesterday to reopen the state. they say, if necessary, organizers will be back to do it again next weekend. costco is requiring you to wear a face covering inside all of its stores nationwide. they announced a policy last week and enforcement begins today. it does not apply to children under 2 or people who cannot wear masks because of medical conditions. the masks are required in central businesses like costco and most bay area counties. there is a limit on the amount of meat you can buy from the store. members can get a maximum of three beef, pork or poultry products. uber is making plans to require them to wear face covers and developing technology to make sure everyone is doing it.

uber executives approved the new policy last week to ensure it is followed uber is figuring out a way to detect if drivers are wearing masks or face coverings before they go online and start accepting trips. the company is also looking into ways to hold riders accountable that requirement is expected to roll out in the next few weeks. starting today, a big change at the airport. if you are one of the few people still traveling now, masks will become a must-have accessory along with your carry on. julian glover has more from mineta san jose. >> reporter: the bottom line is that american airlines is trying to convince american passengers that it is safe to fly. that's why starting today at mineta san jose you will be required to wear a face mask joining sfo in those requirements to do so. it applies to employees and travelers and anyone under 6 and

anyone with trouble breathing are exempt. you're required to keep your mask on for your flight if you're traveling with delta, united airlines or jetblue. a week from now, southwest, spirit and american airlines will join the list requiring passengers and crew to wear cloth masks or homemade face coverings. >> do you feel safer and do you feel it may not be necessary? >> i think it is what it is and if it takes us wearing a little mask in order to travel then so be it. >> reporter: other changes here. crews are regularly cleaning and disinfecting high-touch services throughout the day and giving bathrooms attention every two hours and deep cleaning public areas overnight. a spokesman tells us. now also in an effort to get passengers back in the sky, we're hearing that most american airlines have blocked most, if not all of those middle seats on the airplanes when you're trying to book. you're trying to give those passengers some extra room to spread out. for now, reporting live at mineta san jose, i'm julian glover, abc7 news.

>> julian, thank you. we thought this might happen and today it's official j. crew has filed for bankruptcy. the company says its are come to an agreement with its lenders to continue operating during the process. the filing doesn't mean j. crew will automatically go out of business, but it is one of the possible outcomes. j. crew is the first major retailer to file for chapter 11 bankruptcy at this time. j. jcpenney, neiman marcus and macy's are also struggling financially. you can see we're starting down about 300 points this morning. here at abc7 we're honoring the class of 2020. they had to forego graduation ceremonies and other milestones because of the coronavirus pandemic. madison patrick is a morgan hill native and graduating from uc santa barbara. her dad tells us she worked really hard starting at a junior college and battling illness during her college years.

75 in san jose and morgan hill and gilroy at 78. peninsula about 66 to 71 and that is from north to south. progressively get warmer as you travel south. along the coast today, 58 to about 62 but mid 60s in downtown and south san francisco and sausalito. 71 in vallejo and then the rest of the north bay in the mid to upper 70s. along the east bay shore, 68 in hayward and also san leandro and oakland around 71 degrees. inland valleys you'll like these temperatures compared to what is coming our way, mid to upper 70s. mid 40s to low 50s. notice no more 30s in the forecast like we have this morning. let's jump ahead to wednesday. here you go, we're near 90 and not quite there. a lot of mid to upper 80s in the east bay and we make it into the mid 90s and 80s showing up around the bay and 70s in san francisco and even warmer for friday as we try to get to 90 in the north bay and the south bay
