clothing stores, book stores am be able to reopen this friday with modifications. businesses that cannot reopen include offices, restaurants and shopping malls, but it's an encouraging start. >> the statewide shelter in place order took effect march 20th. now the governor says stage two of the shelter in place will begin this friday, may 7th. this phase will happen gradually, correct? >> that is right, but it's definitely good news. especially for those who are eager to see the state begin to reopen. what we learned is that on friday, retailers will be allowed to reopen, but with curbside pickup. it's not a full phase two like we learned about last week, but it's a start. >> finally a major move forward.

>> we are entering into the next phase this week. >> phase two will begin on friday. exactly how is somewhat complicated. >> we mentioned phase two included an earlier and a later consideration. >> here's the thing. as newsom announced last week, phase two will include the reopening of low risk businesses. today he said only part of phase two can begin on friday. for instance, malls and office spaces cannot reopen and restaurants cannot do in person dining. retailers like clothing stores, florists and book stores can reopen, only with curbside pickup. logistics and manufacturing around those sectors can open too. on top of that, there's also this. >> we are also announcing the capacity for these other regions to move further into phase two, with plans that need to be locally certified. >> he'll allow for regional variance.

capacity can move faster through phase two than other counties. if a county wants to move slower, they can do that too. >> for example, the bay area, northern california, they have guidelines where they are a little more strict than these guidelines. if they choose not to come into compliance they have that right. >> newsom says the decision has been guided by the data. still there's been growing pressure to reopen. three california counties are defying the state's stay at home order and already reopening. >> let's not develop a.m. nearby yarks let's not forget why we're in this position in the first place. >> here in the bay area where our modified shelter in place order extends through may, things are moving slower. san francisco mayor says she's working with the governor and health officials to come up with

a plan. >> we're really excited about it, and we want to see people get back to work especially, but we want to do so responsibly. >> governor newsom said he'll lay out guidelines for all of this on nurse. i want to bring up child care, it's still unclear whether and when child care will be expanded. we'll try to get answers on that soon. >> dolores park could be closed if people don't start following social distancing orders. the mayor made the announcement today saying she was disappointed to see large crowds at the park over the weekend. william scott says it's okay to go to the park with family or people in the same household. people in the park should be wearing face masks, however. there is a team of officers who focus on parks and chief scott says they are starting to cite

people. book stores like green apple books are preparing to deal with customers in person again. this store says it still has a lot of concerns. >> it's exciting to be able to get books to customers more quickly. and it will help us keep more people on the payroll. >> we are concerned about public safety and the safety of our employees. so we'll be looking for guidance from this city and state on how to keep our employees safe, and how to keep our customers safe. >> orders and shipping them by mail. across the bay area today, construction projects can officially resume. so can real estate transactions, as well as outdoor businesses like landscaping and nurseries. cornell bernard is live in lafayette with more on that aspect. cornell? >> it is a small return to normal, but a lot of people were anxious to get out, get their car washed or shop for spring plants. it's okay to do so, and you wouldn't believe how many people showed up here today.

people rome a little further in san mateo county p.m. people are allowed to hike and bike within 10 miles of their home. before today the restriction was 5 miles. skateparks, tennis courts and golf courses have reopened. college students count on summer internships to get real world work experience. for many it could be a lost summer as companies weigh whether to even create virtual programs. david louie is live with what's at stake for students and how various companies are trying to adapt. >> this is not good news for some students. the number of internships could fall in half as a result of covid-19. the reasons vary. competition is fierce to get a summer internship. just ask mike, a sophomore at cal. >> i probably applied between

august and november, 40 or 50 places and that wasn't an experience. that was unique to me. that's almost all the engineers at cal most likely. >> he was one of 59,000 who applied at procter & gamble, only 570 were hired. for the first time ever, internships will be virtual. >> there's no playbook in taking on this effort. we had to adapt and test some different things out to feel confident and we'll move forward at 110% to be able to deliver it. >> procter & gamble isn't alone. a survey indicates half of all internships will be done virtually because of the coronavirus situation. but that means the other half are likely cancelled. the largest declines in hiring interns were in travel and tourism, information technology, architecture and civil engineering and telecommunications. >> i'm going to be sent a company computer with all the different programs i need to be done virtually, thankfully.

>> he and his fellow interns will be getting laptops from procter & gamble. after work social hours will go virtual. a company founded almost 183 years ago can be nimble. >> trusting your newer workforce with those ideas and leaning on them in this time of moving to a more digital world is huge for us. >> we reached out to several tech firms in silicon valley about the status of their internship programs. both facebok and google tell us they're planning to run their internships virtually. results are out following coronavirus testing for those living or working in san francisco's mission district which has the highest number of coronavirus cases in the city. in four days, nearly 3,000 people were tested. 62 of those people tested positive, of that group, 95% were latinos. most of those infected 90%

reported they were unable to work from home. free testing is now available for people living or working in san francisco. requirements include having at least one symptom or having been in close contact with someone who has tested positive. seth or front line workers can get tested regardless of symptoms or exposure. insurance or a doctor's note are not needed. to see a map of test sites, go to sf.gov. three new testing sites are set to open in santa clara county. one at james lick high school, one at christopher high school in gilroy. people can go monday through friday from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. make an appointment at lhi.care/covidtesting. that's how you make the appointment. the third site is located at pal stadium, it will be opened mondays, wednesdays and fridays from 9:00 until 3:00. in the north bay, two public covid testing sites will open

tomorrow regardless if they're showing symptoms. there's no drive through option, you'll need to get out of your car to be defendanted. appointments are required and can be made online or over the phone. we have our link on our website. derek almena has been released from jail where he awaits a new trial. he was released on $150,000 bail. he's awaiting a new trial on 36 counts of involuntary manslaughter for the 36 people who died in the warehouse fire in oakland in 2016. a judge declared a mistrial last year due to a hung jury. we have good news to share. east bay congressman mark desonay is out of the hospital. his sons say he'll continue his recovery at his home in d.c. until his doctor's deem it safe

in the south bay, officers are cracking down on wreckless driving that is being fueled by empty streets. chp officers were on the lookout for speeding or any other unsafe driving. that amount of tickets shows officers caught quite a bit of violators as you can see. the chp posted these pictures today. a driver was clocked going 124 miles an hour.

>> that's just reckless and so unsafe. as we try to endure shelter orders, the ability to get outside and exercise is crucial. as laura around thonny explains, that involves hiking or mountain biking, there's another threat we all need to be aware of, rattlesnakes. >> these pictures tell the tale. rattlesnakes are out on east bay hiking trails and at least one local hospital has seen the impact. >> usually in a year we see 11 or 12 all told, and we've already seen 4. >> while people are flocking to trails to get exercise and escape the doll drops of the coronavirus shelter orders. they're running into a different threat. regulars here say they've already seen the rattlesnakes on these trails. others say they haven't seen them yet, but they're aware. >> i'm not paranoid about it, i can see, i can run if i need to. >> it's beautiful, so it's worth it to me.
