it is wednesday, may 6th. of course, you're never more than seven minutes away from the accuweather forecast. here's mike. >> i am just now seeing what you're doing. what do you call that? >> sizzle. for the forecast. just a little, not too much. >> i was going to say, you could do that while i'm doing the forecast but everybody would pay attention to you. i'm kidding. let's talk about the forecast. you can see the winds have calmed down considerably and they'll be back especially around the bay shoreline and the afternoon hours and high clouds quickly exiting ask the moon is down and now we just have to wait for the sunshine and sizzling temperatures. how hot it gets today. 49 to 52. not bad this morning. look at the 60s along the coast all day today while we hit the low to mid 70s around our bay and inland and 79 to 85 and this is just the beginning. more 80s and 90s coming up tomorrow and i'll have that coming up next.

here's reggie. also coming up tomorrow, mike, governor newsom expected to give us more details about going into this second phase of reopening here in california. this morning, we're getting a better look of what that will be in napa county. officials gave the green light to clothing stores, florists and sporting good stores to open on friday. they can only offer curbside pickup. the county health official said she's not sure right now if winery tasting rooms fall under stage two or stage three. marin county is going to stick to its plan, which is stricter than the governor's. it's looking at allowing some retail stores to reopen on may 18th with curbside pickup. that is about a week and a half after the governor's plan. the county has put together its highly detailed three-phase plan and the officials say it could be months before it reaches the last phase. santa clara county leaders are waiting to hear more before considering their options. >> we are evaluating, of course, in our own community what we can

and can't do to ensure that we protect or residents and we, also, are looking to learn more about the proposal and the changes in the state order. >> dr. sarah cody says the county needs more ppe for health care workers and more contact investigations. the county is doing better when it comes to the number of hospitalizations and beds to accept patients. san francisco is expanding the availability of 24-hour toilets during the pandemic. board of supervisors planned to open 18 pit stops around the clock. that brings the total locations throughout the city to 49. they are hoping it will increase sanitation among the homeless during this crisis. the search is on for a covid-19 vaccine. pfizer is working with the germany company to start human trials for potential vaccines. jobina fortson is at the live desk with the progress they're making. jobina? >> thank you, kumasi. but pfizer is testing four

different variations of a potential vaccine. all of them use generic material to spark an immune response and produce antibodies to fight the virus. pfizer started testing the vaccine on people this week and volunteers were given the vaccine or a placebo and the lead investigator broke down the process this morning on "gma." >> the first volunteers in the united states were vaccinated on monday right here. they will be coming back frequently to have blood draws to look at their immune response. in two weeks, four weeks, a second dose of vaccine and then two, four weeks after that. we will be looking at immune responses. >> dr. kathleen explains why she's optimistic about this vaccine. coming up on "gma" at 7:00 right here on abc7 after our show. i'll send it over to you,

reggie. the mission here at abc7 is to bring you stories that build a better bay area and that mission is all the more important as we rebuild and recover from the coronavirus pandemic. already some health providers are back to offering surgeries that were put on hold. dental offices are struggling with how to reopen and keep everyone safe. we did speak with an east bay dental hygienist by phone who wanted to rename anonymous. her boss asked her to come back to work in the next few weeks and she declined and chosen to forego that payment. >> i don't want to get sick. i want to protect everyone in the office and protect the business and my license and my patient. i don't want to be -- >> last week on abc7 a public health officer said preventative care was safe to resume but the dental association says county health orders cannot conduct doctors to go back because guidance from the state is still pending. old-fashioned fun is making

a comeback. so, who knew we would be talking about drive-in movie theaters in 2020, but here we are as a form of entertainment that we can enjoy right now. amy hollyfield is live for us in concord. amy? >> hard to believe, right, reggie? i looked at the history of drive-in movies and the first patented one was in 1933. of course, they were very popular in the '50s and now here we are in 2020 excited about the drive-in movie. but it is a thing. they are now allowed to open and with the theaters closed, this is a way to get out to the movies and still be socially distanced. this theater has just reopened in concord. they do have some new rules because of the pandemic. the snack bar is closed. you need to bring your own popcorn and the cars need to be at least ten feet apart. but even in a limited capacity. the kids seemed happy to be here and the parents say they feel perfectly safe.

>> we're in our cars so it's not like we're sitting there together and sitting next to each other at the same, you know, the same seats and rows and everything. we're in the comfort of our own cars and not like that person is over there touching me or in my bubble and definitely brought popcorn and some candy. >> and a chocolate bar. >> well, they do have a playground here for wiggly kids, but that is also closed. you cannot get out of your car unless you are headed to the restroom. so, there are some rules to keep everybody perfectly socially distanced but what a fun activity for getting out. there are locations in sacramento, san jose and this one in concord. they're showing a double feature here for the young set. they have "trolls" and "onward." and they have "the hunt" with "the invisible man" and something to think about as we head into the weekend. reporting live in concord, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thanks, amy. as more counties and businesses begin to reopen, we

all right. let's take a look at the temperatures around san francisco. you can see a lot of low 50s out there this morning under already a little bit of sunshine. and as we move to other neighborhoods, you're going to

see that we still have a few lingering high clouds out there across the southern half of the bay and temperatures running mainly in the upper 40s to low 50s. there are some exceptions out around antioch. it's about 57 and probably take you you yosemite, why not? out and about a lot like yesterday, a lot warmer. watch out. you might want to take some extra water with you if you're out exercising. east bay valleys already 80 by 1:00 and mid 80s for several hours this afternoon. 78 at 7:00 and as far as the south bay, mid 70s from noon all the way through 7:00. spiking in the low 80s for a couple hours. it will be breezy this afternoon and evening. it will be breezy this afternoon and evening on the peninsula, but we'll still make it into the upper 70s this afternoon. even warmer tomorrow, that's coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. here's jobina with the morning commute. >> thank you, mike. good morning, everyone. so, since about 4:30 a.m., i've been following a deadly crash in

santa clara as of two minutes ago, all lanes are finally open on northbound 101 before san tomas. video of the scene from earlier this morning. according to the chp, a pedestrian was hit on the freeway by a camper that you saw earlier in that video. that person, unfortunately, did die. a coroner was brought out to the scene and this death investigation just wrapped up about three minutes ago now. this backup was extensive. speeds down to 7 and 10 miles per hour in the area and certainly impacting our essentially workers as they were trying to make their way through santa clara this morning. again, all cleared now and that is the latest development there. >> jobina, thank you. students in wuhan, china, began returning to school today. everyone is required to wear a mask and have the temperature taken as they go on campus. only seniors were allowed back in class today so they can complete the school year and graduate. not clear when other students will be allowed to return. sacramento state university

is getting creative to help students who need reliable internet to do their work. the school turned a six-story parking garage which isn't being used right now into a drive-in wifi hot spot and study hall. the university says about 100 students park there every week day to access their online classes and do their homework. the university has also distributed hundreds of laptops to students who need them. >> that's creative. coming up next, dealing with a meat shortage. we can see the changes as processing plants start to reopen. we're enjoying seeing this video saying i do over zoom. the local couple who just became

found an infection related to her gallbladder. the 87-year-old is expected to be in the hospital for a few more days. for the first time in 115 years, new york city subway system totally shut down this morning so that trains can be disinfected due to the coronavirus pandemic. the system was shut down from 1:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. this will now be a daily routine, which means there is no overnight train service. buses will still be running with increased service. governor andrew cuomo says overnight service will not return until the global pandemic is over. well, now here is an uplifting story. love just got married. really. >> forsaking all others to be true to her always. >> i do. >> the officiate presiding remotely.

cindy chavez officiated the wedding over zoom. that's right, his name is love. the couple paid for a ceremony on march 19th at san francisco city hall and they had to postpone it and they did this instead with friends and family attending virtually. >> they even had a first dance. governor newsom issued an executive order last week temporarily allowing virtual marriage ceremonies. >> why do i feel like i'm there. that is just the cutest thing. >> isn't it? >> and his name. come on now. >> it's just great. and they look so happy. >> they do. >> congratulations, you guys. this is where i say, mike, take it. >> okay.

thank you, reggie. hi, everybody. yes, congratulations to them. we're very happy for them. take a look at the roof camera. about 53 degrees right there. let's talk about your accuweather highlights. warming trend begins today and then we have some wild swings and temperatures from the mid 90s to upper 60s over a three to four-day span. here's a look at your fog forecast and the reason i show it, there isn't any. look how quickly the yellows start to take over. those are the 70s at noon and even the oranges as we head into the afternoon hours and those are the 80s. in fact, low to mid 80s down in the south bay and gilroy 85 degrees and start in 80 in mountainview and drop to 75 as you head up towards millbrae on the peninsula. the mid to upper 60s along the coast where they'll become breezy and become breezy on the other side of the peninsula. on the bay side. now we'll extend into san francisco and still reach 73 today. breezy north bay coast. upper 60s for you and everybody else in the 80 to 85 degree

70s and 80s today. check out the 80s and 90s tomorrow and even warmer temperatures friday when the heat peaks and then look at this. by mother's day we're back into the 60s and 70s. breaking news at the live desk this morning. san francisco-based uber has just announced that the company will be making major cuts due to the coronavirus pandemic. what we've learned from the u.s. securities and exchange commission is that uber will cut 3,700 full-time jobs or 14% of its workforce. the job cuts will be from the company's customer support and recruiting teams. ceo is also waiving his base salary for the rest of the year. uber also says it's evaluating other costs and hinted more cuts

could be coming. the company also lost a lot of business recently since fewer people need rides during the pandemic. kumasi. >> thank you, jobina. more people are turning to plant-based meats because of the meat shortage. beyond meat did better than expected during the first quarter. its shares have gone up 85% since march. covid-19 hit beef and pork plants pretty hard. some facilities have had to close because workers have gotten sick with coronavirus. the meat shortage is starting to impact fast food restaurants. one out of five wendy's sold out of beef on monday. the usda reports beef and pork production is done 35% compared to this time last year. some meat processing plants that closed for covid-19 are starting to open back up, but industry experts say production will be significantly slower. and they say we should expect higher prices at the supermarket. the cost of ground beef for hamburgers could rise more than 60% in the coming days. shanghai disneyland is set to reopen next week for the first time since the covid-19

pandemic. the park is going to look different. they're going to have to institute some new measures including opening with limited capacity and requiring advance ticketing and resservations. enforcing social distancing which means for lines, restaurants and ride vehicles, fewer people able to be on these attractions. ticket sales start friday with the park scheduled to open on monday and disney is a parent company of abc7. i am happy to see this. it gives people hope that we'll see what happens with shanghai and watch the progress there and then eventually be able to replicate it here at the u.s., pas. >> definitely. coming up next at 6:30, twitter wants us to be a little bit nicer. a new feature they are testing out to cut down hateful comments. cinco de mayo celebrations in the south bay get out of hand. police shut them down but that didn't stop people. two coronavirus testing sites coming online here in

the high clouds out there up around 30,000 feet and that thin veil that you can see is quickly sliding to the south and look for the gorgeous sunrise that it's creating as we look from our exploratorium camera there and we'll take a couple more looks at that coming up. right to our high emptures ttem and 80s and around fremont mid to upper 70s around the bay including san francisco and upper 60s at the coast with a whole lot of sunshine. the usual areas will become breezy again this afternoon. we'll talk about even hotter temperatures coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. now an abc7 news live desk update. >> at the live desk, the san mateo county sheriff office is investigating after a woman was shot and killed by depliuties lt night in half moon bay. a woman was carrying her rifle and alcohol on main street near fernandez park at 7:30 p.m. deputies asked her to drop the gun and she instead shot at them

and deputies returned fire striking her. she was taken to the hospital where she died. kumasi. >> all right, thank you, jobina. happening today, two new covid-19 testing sites are opening up in santa clara county. james lick high school and christopher high school in gilroy. abc7 news reporter julian glover is live with the details. julian? >> hi, good morning, kumasi. the name of the game is really all about expanding testing here in santa clara county and really trying to reach those underserved communities where enough testing is simply not happening right now. so, as you mention, two new testing sites coming online and opening up in 30 minutes from now. the one at james lick high school in east san jose and the other being christopher high school in gilroy it's a public private partnership a health services company now operating 80 testing sites throughout the state of california. again, testing will be by appointment only so you can't just drive up to this one. it will be happening monday

through friday 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. anyone can get a test, but anyone with symptoms and first responders that are asymptomatic, those people are given pritorty. you can schedule by call or online. and you can find the website to go and schedule that appointment on our website abc7news.com. and here is health officer dr. sarah cody explaining why it is so important to up testing in the county. >> we're about 20% of the way there. we have more progress to be made. >> certainly lots new progress to be made but hopefully these testing sites are progress in the right direction. 130 tests conducted in each of the sites each day. i'm julian glover, abc7 news.

>> julian, thank you. speaking of east san jose, there was a problem as people were celebrating cinco de mayo and got to be an issue for police. a crowd packed a parking lot near story and king roads. this is the same location where a large crowd also gathered on saturday. officers came in to enforce social distancing and then the cars just returned where they were an hour later and then so did police. >> they won't stay away. they'll break it up. they'll take off. they'll come back. they'll find another spot. it will just be like a cat and mouse game all day, all night. >> san jose police tell us officers will not go into crowds to issue citations for people who are violating the social distancing order. two residents at a nursing care facility in vallejo have now died from coronavirus. they were in hospice care at windsor vallejo care center. 99 people tested positive.

77 residents and 23 staff members. it is following all safety recommendations. well, just a few minutes ago, president trump made a big announcement of the future of the white house task force. jobina is at the live desk with this update. jobina? >> thank you, kumasi. good morning. just a short time ago, president trump tweeted that the coronavirus task force will be continuing indefinitely with a focus on safety and reopening the country again. there had been reports of that the task force would be disbanding. what we know here is that the president visited a honeywell factory in phoenix, arizona. the facility makes n95 masks and in an interview interview with david muir mr. trump acknowledged likely more covid-19 deaths as more states reopen. >> it is possible there will be some because you won't be locked into an apartment or a house or whatever it is, but at the same time, we're going to practice social distancing. >> two new studies warn against

premature openings. john hopkins reports the daily death rate could double by june. the university of washington says the number of deaths could increase to nearly 135,000 by early august. i'll send it over to you. >> all right, thank you, jobina. the u.s. postal service and some bay area landlords are warning residents about an increase in mail theft as stimulus and unemployment checks and tax refunds get delivered. porch pirates grabbed this package in oakland just 20 minutes after it was left there. two days before this, a woman broke into this apartment building near lake merritt and grabbed armf fulls of mail. people should file a report no matter what's taken. >> they're probably not just hitting that one house or apartment or condominium. they are hitting others and attacking their neighbors, as well. the reporting makes all the difference. >> you can file a report on the usps website and there you can also find a 24-hour hotline.

mike nicco with a look at our warm up. hi, mike. >> reggie, kumasi. we'll start with our current conditions which are chilly out there. even low to mid 50s from belmont up to daly city and antioch at 59. already some microclimates this morning. let's talk about our commute. good morning essential workers, appreciate you keeping up the good fight out there. you may need the ac heading to our inland neighborhoods and it's going to be breezy south of the bay bridge, once again. here's a look at the east bay. not the east bay valleys, but the east bay where we'll hit the upper 70s during the afternoon hours with full-on sunshine. how about the north bay. you can see we definitely make it into the 80s for a couple hours after starting at 52. about a 30 degree warming trend today. and how about san francisco. average high 64 and some low to mid 70s for a couple hours this afternoon and as has been the case, it will be breezy also. talk about even warmer

temperatures coming up in the accuweather seven-day forecast. here's jobina. good morning. >> good morning, mike. thank you. i am tracking a new issue, everyone, that i want to get to right now. i will pull up the graphics so you can see a car fire right now and a sig alert that has been issued right as you hop off of the richmond san rafael bridge. if you're headed westbound. this is westbound 580 before san quentin. two lanes blocked right now and fire department is there and you can expect delays if you're traveling westbound. this started off around 6:15 this morning with flames coming underneath the vehicle and then escalated from there. according to the chp, it does sound like fire crews are having a tough time accessing this fire. so, two lanes blocked right now. i'll keep you posted as this situation continues to unfold. but we do have a sig alert. also now take you to some video seen from earlier this morning in santa clara. another sig alert involving a pedestrian and a camper that you just saw in that video.

according to the chp, they're not exactly sure how but that pedestrian was hit by that camper. unfortunately, that pedestrian did die. that death investigation wrapped up shortly after 6:00 a.m. and the crash itself happened around 4:30. this caused a big backup for our essential workers trying to make their way through

107 in palm springs and mid and upper 80s through the central valley and 68 in tahoe where we can have record temperatures the next couple days. thought we would end on this sunrise. kumasi? in georgia, protestersprotes marched after video posted online shows 25-year-old amodjogging through a neighborhood. this was back in february. police say a man and his son followed him in a truck because they thought he looked like a suspect in a recent string of burglaries. you can see and hear several gunshots in this video. it is kind of disturbing to watch. his mother says she hasn't looked at the video. >> i don't think that i'll ever prepare myself mentally to look at the video. hoping that the video shows my son was not committing a crime. he was just jogging.

this fire they had a bit of an issue with as far as getting to it. it startedmthis morning and began to progress. we'll take you to a cal trans camera now so you can see the backup. at one point traffic was completely stopped. you can see there it is at a crawl right now and they're trying to work and clear this up. it does also sound like according to the chp, some portion has melted. some plastic area near the bridge so i know they want to make sure that everyone is safe as they move through. again, traffic is now moving as you can see here, so that is good for our essential workers. if you're headed this way, you can certainly expect delays this morning. >> jobina, thank you. uc berkeley's chancellor says the school is not going to refund student fees. carol chris says students still have access to classes and are getting full credit. two class action lawsuits claim uc owes students refunds because they no longer have access to health facilities, student

the president defended his decision to support states rolling back restrictions to reopen the economy. number five. check out the lack of marine layer clouds this morning. that means our warming trend is beginning with mid to upper 60s at the coast. some upper 70s to low 80s around the bay and mid 80s inland. number six. heads up to our essential workers that are going to be taking westbound 580 the richmond san rafael bridge. the traffic is almost at a standstill. fire crews are trying to put out a car fire in the area. police are on the scene. two lanes are blocked right now. definitely expect delays and a portion of the bridge, it looks like, has burned. number seven. even with no visitors, this 10-year-old black bear at the oregon zoo is living his best life. the zoo loves this tub and jumps in it when it gets a little warm. the oregon zoo has been closed since mid-march but we're enjoying him enjoying himself.
