yesterday when it was 92 degrees outside. so, thankfully i have one and it worked. yay. so, our warmest day moving forward, temperatures up to 30 degrees cooler by thursday and we'll talk more about that rain coming up and first let's get back to reggie. >> mike, thank you. california is entering stage two of our reopening plan and that means today that some businesses in some counties will start opening their doors, but for limited access. so, napa, sonoma, santa cruz and solano will follow the governor's order or at least orders close to it in reopening. abc7 news reporter amy hol hollyfield is live in napa this morning. amy? >> hi, good morning, reggie. some small business owners say this is a small step but wish it went further. she needs people to go in and browse. curbside service just doesn't quite work for a shop like this. she needs people to go in and be able to shop. but only curbside service will be allowed.

the governor's guidelines allow for retail businesses that offer curbside service with proper physical distancing protocols to partially reopen. so, those businesses do include book stores, toy stores, clothing and shoe stores. sporting goods and florists. but this boutique owner that we talked to said she's trying hard to make it during these times and under all these restrictions but she says it's really tough. >> i am trying to keep my store alive. we've reinvented how we were doing business and we built a new web store and we're just grasping at straws trying to stay here and haven't received any federal funding. just trying to swim. >> as you know, napa made it through that 2014 earthquake, but officials say this pandemic is far more devastating because after an earthquake they could rebuild. a pandemic, though, still going on. tourists likely not coming back

needle workshops. now on abc7 news live desk update. >> at the live desk, i have the results of a new abc news poll that show that more americans think reopening the country will do more harm than good. two-thirds of the participants in this survey said opening the u.s. economy now is not worth it because more lives would be lost. about one-third said it would help salvage the economy. the poll also found that many people are skeptical about a covid-19 vaccine. 25% said they would not get vaccinated even if a safe and effective vaccine was developed. while 75% say they would get vaccinated. more than 500 adults participated in the poll, which was conducted over the past two days. i'll send it over to you, kumasi. >> thank you, jobina. a surprise announcement from governor newsom. he says the first community spread of covid-19 here in the state happened at a nail salon.

he didn't say which one, though. amanda del castillo shows us how local salons are working to improve safety. >> reporter: the days of walk-ins and busy waiting rooms are a thing of the past. at the center of the state's first community transmission. >> this whole thing started in the state of california in a nail salon. i just want to remind you and remind everybody of that. i'm very worried about that. >> reporter: community spread. meaning the virus was contracted locally, not from traveling abroad or by crossing paths with an infected person who did. >> nail salons are certainly a setting where people are sitting in close proximity to each other and next to each other, across from each other and then adding physical contact on top of that probably osmentes the transmission. dr. ann lu at stanford health

homeless nonprofit says crews will deep clean the building after an employee tested positive. expected to open again and start services on monday. st. anthony's serves more than 2,000 meals every day. a meat plant near fresno is dealing with an outbreak of coronavirus. 108 employees have tested positive. this comes just over a week after the facility reported its first case. company officials plan to identify and test workers who may have come into contact with those who are sick. central valley meat company is still open. this is alameda county fair has been canceled. organizers are calling off because of covid-19. it was scheduled to run from june 19th to july 12th and the first time the fair has been canceled in 108 years. let's go back to napa right now where wildlife is roaming free. take a look at what a camera caught in the dry creek area. these are three juvenile mountain lions. they're actually considered kittens because even though they look pretty big, they are just

seven months old. they posted this video on the facebook page and the organization says the kittens belong to a 9-year-old female that they have been following since 2017. oh, it continues to happen. kittens, huh. i wonder how much they weigh and how strong they are at that age. let's talk about what is dpoeg on weatherwise. good to see both of you this morning. thank you for joining us. east bay where we have temperatures in the mid to upper 50s in most neighborhoods under a clear sky. orinda higher in elevation at and mid to upper 40s in the north bay. that's quite a drop from the low 90s yesterday afternoon. and we've got some 60s out around brentwood and antioch. pretty much where we expected to be. here's a look at our exploratorium camera and looking across clear conditions and downtown the financial district, if you will. all about trying to stay cool and not get sun burned.

we are checking in on traffic here and overall we have a pretty quiet start there. just seeing some road construction, of course. few hazards minor crashes and the biggest thing going on right now we'll take you to san francisco a live look at the 101 alemany project there. maintenance work under way right now. all northbound lanes are blocked right now. northbound traffic is being diverted to 280. now, it looks like here because cal trans told us last night there would be just one lane of traffic moving on southbound 101, but as i'm seeing from this live camera, it looks like they just opened it back up. opened earlier than they projected and, again, just maintenance work from the deck project they did earlier and completed ahead of schedule. i will keep monitoring this for you and so far it looks like things are just opening. for our essential workers, no problems and you should not expect delays in this area. reggie and kumasi. >> good to see that.

they're ready for you and then they send you a text. tesla can restart operations at their plant in fremont today this is according to a report from bloomberg. elon musk has been a vocal critic of stay-at-home order. number four, the governor's office said the state is facing a deficit of more than $54 billion because of covid-19. lawmakers say it may lead to cuts or tax hikes or both to balance the budget. number five, in just minutes at 5:30, the labor department is expected to report the worst set of job numbers since record keeping started in 1948. the unemployment rate could reach 16% or more. number six. we have relatively clear conditions on our roads this morning for our essential workers that need to head in this friday. as we take a live look showing you san jose, 101 there. just a few cars making their way up and down the road. things should be nice out there. >> number seven. here is a look at some of our

hottest neighborhoods today from 87 in fremont and 97 in brentwood. now, an abc7 news live desk update. >> in less than an hour, authorities in georgia are set to give an update on a deadly shooting of an unarmed black man. the incident was captured on video. yesterday there were two arrests made in connection to the deadly shooting of ahmaud travis mcmichael are facing murder and aggravated assault charges. he was shot and killed on february 23rd while he was jogging near brunswick, georgia, and perspective, it is southeast just about an hour away from jacksonville, florida. authorities say the elder mcmichael is a former police officer and told cops that he looked like someone who had been responsible for recent break ins. today would have been arbury's

26th birthday. reggie, i'll send it over to you. growing concern about a severe illness linking children to coronavirus. new cases from l.a. to boston. this morning a family of an 8-year-old victim is sharing their story. >> reporter: in this morning's "gma first look" kids and covid-19. >> can you say good might, mommy? >> reporter: a seemingly healthy boy became critically ill and was rushed to the hospital after going into cardiac arrest. >> we saw him there. we check for a pulse, no pulse at all. >> reporter: jaden's family tells us in late april he spiked a fever. a pediatrician telling them he should continue taking children's tylenol. days later, the fever started to go away, but jaden was still weak. >> their cardiovascular system is so compromised, they're in shock. >> reporter: just last week jaden took a turn for the worse.

that's coming up at 7:00 a.m. plus, dr. ashton weighs in live with the information every parent needs to know. with your "gma first look" i'm stephanie ramos, abc news new york. it is the wild west in the airline industry right now. each airline basically making up the rules as they go along. this morning the airline pilot's association is criticizing the lack of an industry-wide game plan to protect crew members and passengers. some airlines require masks and others don't and some leave middle seats open for social distancing because there is no standard, passengers decide what makes them feel protected. >> feeling relatively okay but clearly going through all the necessary precautions just in case. >> you can't take this piece meal whack-a-mole kind of approach. you have to have a standardized methodology of dealing with the crisis we have in front of us. >> the head of the pilot's association asked the faa to

regulate and enforce coronavirus safety measures. the faa replied saying airlines are responsible for the occupational health of their workforce. one tool keeping all of us connected is zoom. now the conferencing company wants to help us all celebrate mom. it is partnering with dove to make virtual mother's day celebrations easier. zoom is lifting the 40-minute time limit on free zoom accounts this weekend. so, we can all talk to mom all we want without worrying about being interrupted. it's offering free video calls as a thank you to all of the moms caring for their families near and far. do you video chat with mama aqui? >> i do. because we got her an ipad. so, she's able to facetime us. that's really nice. >> that is sweet. >> what about you, mike? >> no. we just do the old-fashioned.

how about upper 60s along the coast today and then mid 70s. it will be a few neighborhood in san francisco that do hit the upper 70s. here's a look up at the north bay where we have mid 80s to low 90s with napa, calistoga and cloverdale hitting the low to mid 90s. richmond is the most comfortable spot at 80 and 84 in oakland to 85 in castro valley and nothing comfortable about these temperatures in the east bay valley. 3:00 this afternoon, normally our hottest time and a few high clouds out there and look as we head into the evening hours. you can see the clouds developing along the coast and moving inland and then moving into the bay tonight but maybe not inland. temperatures tomorrow morning we wake up upper 40s to mid 50s. we'll talk more about your heat temps coming up in a second and first get to the seven-day forecast and show you that almost 20 to 30 degree drop by tuesday and still a one on our storm impact scale and the likelihood of rain not looking as good as it did yesterday. reggie, kumasi.

now to our building a bay area project thanks report. this week is national nurse's week and what a better time. see's candy believes they also deserve treats. here's abc anchor dan ashley. >> reporter: on this day the big shipment isn't of masks or ventilators, it's candy. >> it's been overwhelming and never before have we seen such a public display of appreciation. and acknowledgment for the work we do. so, we feel that appreciation. >> reporter: this time that appreciation comes in the form of chocolate. lots of it. see's has a store in walnut creek and they cleaned the place out of easter candy and brought it to the hospital. this is a remarkable effort, this is product that they can't sell because they're closed and it has no preservatives so it goes bad. they don't want it to go to waste. see's candy has donated hundreds of thousands of boxes all across the west. an organization that usually supports families of fallen police frs os and firefighters

comfortable temperatures. it will be warmest, this is the warmest it will get. 64 at the coast and 79 inland. come monday into tuesday, the models are backing off just a little bit in the amount of rain we receive and it will definitely be cooler those days. the nba is allowing some team facilities to reopen but only in areas that have eased stay-at-home. only three teams are actually planning to open today. players are going to have to stay 12 feet apart and head coaches are not allowed. there are also no group workouts. the nba will hold an all-player conference call later today to go over those details. major league baseball is expected a proposal to play within a week. they had season starting in july. right now they're optimistic that teams will be able to play at their home stadiums and that they could get in anywhere from 80 to 100 games, but there are a lot of hurdles that need to be

alameda, contra costa and santa clara will adhere to stricter rules put out by their health officials. marin and san francisco said they are pushing back phase two reopenings to may 18th. governor newsom says phase two will bring significant changes. retailers will see more pickup and delivery options and contactless payment and manufacturing will see closed break rooms, outdoor break areas and physically distanced seating. delivery drivers will carry sanitation materials when they're out and use personal protective equipment for every stop. >> we're moving forward and we're doing it always with an eye being led by the data, by the science and by public health and these public health indices. >> now, here's a glimpse at what could be opening later in stage two. so, offices, seating at restaurants,museums. the next set of guidelines will be released tuesday. in solano county, some

businesses will reopen today. low-risk businesses like clothing retail stores, pet grooming, florists, offices and parks. shoppers will be allowed indoors but they have to maintain social distancing. not everyone is convinced this is the right move. >> imagine you going into a store and there's lots of people, hardly any air circulating. think of the people that you're going to get infected. >> killing people. >> you will definitely start going out a little more. >> she's not going to let me. but if i could, i would. >> restaurants are not allowed to have in-house dining yet. the health officer says that won't happen in the next week. the owner of ashby flowers in berkeley will not open for curbside pickup today. marcie simon hoped to reopen in time for mother's day. she taped off distancing on the sidewalk and continued to ban curbside sales derailed simon's plans. >> i'm terribly disappointed.

i'm mostly disappointed in the city of berkeley and alameda county for not having the ability to reach out to retailers like all of us florists to give us the correct information. >> simon is hoping for enough orders to deliver all of her mother's day inventory. the dmv will reopen select field offices across the state this morning. 25 offices will open back up including five here in the bay area. julian glover is live in san jose with what we need to know. julian? >> hey, good morning, kumasi. along with phase two of businesses reopening across the state of california. we know that five dmv offices will open here in the bay area. you need one of these face mask physical you plan on coming to one of the offices in the field and get ready for some long lines. they're telling us it could be quite some time until you can get in here. let's walk you through the five offices that will be opening. we know the san jose office here on senter road and the san

francisco office on fell street and offices in concord and the oakland claremont location and open 5 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. most days. most things you come to the dmv for like license and vehicle registration that is still being done online but reinstating a suspended license or disability parking placard, you can do that in person by appointment starting today. now, reminder of the deadline to get that real i.d. is pushed back to october of 2021. you do have more time. you will have to keep your distance while you're at one of the locations, though. they tell us they will be taking necessary precautions when things open up to keep people safe. now, we're also learning that they are using a new feature so you won't actually have to wait inside the building. you'll be able to wait in your car and get a text message when it's your turn to be serviced. services are limited, though. some things still not happening like in-person driving tests. if you were hoping the kids, the teen might be able to do that

in-person driving test and maybe get that driver'slysi license, going to happen right now. in san jose, julian glover. >> thank you, julian. the number of coronavirus cases keeps rising. johns hopkins university reports 1.2 million cases in the u.s. the white house staff member who has now tested positive. jobina? >> thank you, kumasi. good morning. yes, the white house has confirmed its first case of coronavirus in the west wing and involves one of president trump's military valvalets. normally brings the president his lunch and diet cokes to the oval office. >> i had very little contact, personal contact with this gentleman. know who he is. good person. >> both president trump and vice president mike pence say they will get tested for coronavirus more frequently and daily instead of weekly although the white house supports reopening

the economy, no official guideline at the federal level for how to do it safely. the trump administration rejected a cdc road map that gives advice to states. one senior official called it, quote, unnecessary and duplicative. 39 states have started easing restrictions and five more will reopen today. i'll send it back over to you, kumasi. >> thank you, jobina. local governments and the state are finding surpluses now turning into huge deficits because of the pandemic and now they're facing painful cuts. >> we're projecting tens of billions of dollars of shortfalls. all specifically related to covid-19. >> california is looking at more than $54 billion in red ink. lawmakers will have tough choices to make especially when it comes to k through 12 education. members of the legislature are already making plans. >> these financial holes are very big. and it's going to require a lot

of creative thinking. a lot of partnerships with our employee groups to really get through this. >> so, what does that mean? maybe cuts. tax hikes, maybe both. they are also hoping for help from the federal government. contra costa the first area in the bay area to offer testing for every resident regardless of symptoms. being offered at eight locations by appointment only. you can get tested whether you have insurance or not. officials say increased testing will allow the county to ease shelter-in-place orders. so, if you're interested. here's a number to call. again, you have to make an appointment. 844-421-0804. and then you'll be given information about where to go to get one of these tests. also happening today an additional five miles of streets in oakland will be closed. you can see on the map, the city has closed 20 miles of streets to give people more room to safely exercise during our

shelter-in-place. neighbors can drive on the streets to get to and from home and that's it. by the way, you're not allowed to host gatherings on these open streets. that could mean an increase byin energy bills.. you can save by setting your heat to 68 or lower... unplugging and turning off devices when not in use... or just letting the sun light your home. stay well and keep it golden.

work safely and get home, but doing it in the comfortable way also a little bit of a breeze on the bay this afternoon and evening. but no smallcraft advisory. just hopefully the air conditioner is working no matter what mode of transportation you're using. look at those mid 80s for several hours this afternoon. a very nice 73, though, this evening. for the north bay. 51 at 7:00, but look at that. already 86 at 1:00 and some low 90s this afternoon and down to 74. so, it will cool off nicely during the evening hours and in san francisco, destination low to mid 70s. some of our most comfortable weather to date. look at this, upper 90s through the central valley and a record tying 76 in tahoe and a quick look at the potential for rain next week. it's not looking as good as it did yesterday. i'll give you an update on our chance of rain coming up in just a minute. now breaking news from the abc7 live desk. breaking news at the live

desk. i'm looking at numbers the united states has not seen since the great depression. the u.s. labor department just announced these numbers. the unemployment rate spiked to 14.7%. 20.5 million jobs were lost in april due to the layoffs caused by the coronavirus pandemic. it's the most job losses ever in a single month and the worst job figures since recordkeeping began in 1948. nearly all of the job growth in the 11 years since the great recession has disappeared in one month, but interesting note here, reggie. the numbers are slightly lower than economists had predicted and we'll see how they react. investors when markets open in about 45 minutes and we continue to track this pretty much every day. so, startling to see that and we're thinking of those people, not just the numbers here. you hear the numbers, but these are real lives that have been impacted. >> yes. and that goes right into our

next story because a lot of us have heard of the buffet called sweet tomatoes named by a company soup plantation and it is going out of business. all 97 locations including the seven we have here in the bay area will not reopen. 4,400 employees will be out of a job. the buffet-style restaurant chain says reasons include, of course, our lockdown and the fact that health departments may never allow self-serve stations or those types of restaurants to reopen. this morning with millions of people unemployed, the question on so many minds, what happens now? well executive chair of ibm says the future is new collar these are well-paying, in-demand jobs. you don't need a four-year degree to get them but you need the right training. ibm is offering that for free. part of an initiative they call open. >> you were in retail and you can learn these skills and have a really good job in companies like ours. something that we learned, it

isn't really about the hard skill of can i do coding or do i know a certain way to fight cyber, much more about some of the soft skills. >> ibm along with 600 major companies are preparing workers for the so-called new collar jobs. the program offering online training technologies like artificial intelligence, cloud computing and cybersecurity. cal fire is ramping up its effort to prepare for fire season in light of the coronavirus pandemic. firefighters say the small brush fire in brentwood could be a sign of what is to come. east contra costa county shared this photo of the burned hill side yesterday and it was contained to two acres. cal fire crews are changing on how base camps will work so they can comply with social distancing protocos. they're training for minimal contact in large groups while sleeping and eating. firefighters on the front lines will have to be more conscious of how they use their shared equipment. seasonal fire crews have been called back early because of the

lack of rain this winter. >> we're trending anywhere from four to six weeks ahead of schedule when it comes to the fuel moistures. that just does not mean conditions out there right now or what we're seeing in late june. >> as cal fire gets a step ahead of fire season, they say we should be doing the same thing. they recommend using this time while we're sheltering in place to prepare our homes and property, especially with warm weather that is on the way. a southern california neighborhood is finding safe ways to get together. look at this. they had a socially distanced block party. ♪ >> that's cute. well, you can see they were doing it. they were dancing at least six feet apart. this is video that is posted on twitter. kelly o'neil says her parents organized this unblock party and she says neighbors maintained social distancing and even got to thank front line workers.

new this morning, tesla may be ready to reopen its electric car plant as early as today. elon musk made the announcement in an e-mail to staff allowing manufacturers in part of the state to resume operations. what musk didn't mention is that newsom said counties could remab more restrictive than the state. alameda county remains on lockdown until the end of may. thousands of facebook employees will not return to the office any time soon. mark zuckerberg says employees are able to work remotely and they can continue to do that through the end of the year, if they want to. some workers will be required to return to the office, but facebook hasn't decided who they are yet. the company expects to begin opening most of its offices in early july. lyft is now requiring drivers and customers to wear face coverings and also confirm that they don't have coronavirus

symptoms. in addition, the ride-sharing company is also asking drivers to sanitize their vehicles and to promote social distancing. passengers will not be allowed to sit in the front seat. a video game is providing some escape for people in quaranti quarantine and we first told you about animal crossing when the game was first released. players build their own little worlds on a private island. the video game is proved to ease anxiety a lot of people, including a columnist for "washington post" she has documented her experience playing the game. >> my kids caught me in the bathroom. they're knocking on the door, mom, are you playing animal crossing? >> just like if you were maybe to spend time with loved ones or eat a food that you really enjoy and you get that dopamine rush, you can get that from playing a video game. >> experts say video games are comforting because they can replicate real-life experiences. players also gain a sense of accomplishment and social reciprocity and a sense of
