new scenes from a packed united airlines flight raising extreme health fears for heroic ucsf returning to san francisco after helping fight the pandemic on the front line. this morning the group is back home from new york city, now telling their stories, saying their return flight was one of thinking biggest fears. we'll get to that in a second but happy mother's day to you. let's start with a peek of our mother's day forecast. happy mother's day, lisa argen. >> happy mother's day to you,

liz. we want to show you what's on the way, but today we keep. w highs in 60s near oakland. mild day. already in the low 60s with the sun shining in concord. 70 on the bay and chilly at the coast. we will track those showers coming up. liz? >> sounds good. thanks, lisa. now to packed cabin controversy this morning. is new york city doctors fresh off fighting the coronavirus at the new york city hospitals on a return flight home that should have been a warm welcome was a fully packed cabin, as you can see. no social distancing. not a lot of space there. the crowded flight is precisely the concern several doctors had prior to boarding. >> please maintain a distance of

at least six feet. 3 >> reporter: this is a constant announcement at sfo -- >> or two meters from people around you. >> reporter: inside this united flight from new york city to san francisco, every seat was packed. how close were you to people on that flight? >> it was full. we were sitting three in a row, like six and straight back. >> reporter: aboard 25 medical professionals coming back home to san francisco after two to four weeks of working on the frontlines of covid-19 in new york city. just two days ago, ucsf doctor ethan weiss told abc7 he was concerned about this scenario during the six-hour flight. >> i'm scared of getting on the airplane on saturday. i have been taking care of covid-19 patients the last two weeks and more scared about getting on the airline than walking into a hospital. >> reporter: ten days after the flight passengers received an

email from united saying social distancing would be part of the new changes during this pandemic. in this tweet dr. weiss showed his message to united, ensuring the middle seat in every row would be blocked. but the reality was different and potential of what he feared the most became a reality. >> if i randomly happened to be seated in an aisle seat and the person in the window seat has covid, then i'm probably more than likely to get infected there than i would be in the icu. >> reporter: united did not comment on why social distancing was not implemented on this flight and instead replied in part, with overhauled cleaning safety procedures implementing those on board in the process to promote social distancing. united also added this was a complementary free flight for medical professionals and everyone on board was asked to wear face coverings consistent with their new policy. in the newsroom, luz pena, abc news. >> and that tweet has gone

viral. happening today we're closely monitoring crowds as keshorevee forple t hours. oakland mayor said they would be quick to shut down lake mara and the park if they see social distancing violations today. a bold legal move from tesla ceo elon musk. he's threatening to move his company out of fremont and even out of california, and asking the court to force alameda county to let him reopen his manufacturing plant. >> reporter: musk and california health county officials feuded for weeks whether the fremont plant that manufacturers elon musk's tesla cars is an essential busy. the court said it's not. according to the criteria laid down by governor newsom, they

said it is and the state takes precedence. the suit claims alameda county thus thoersed the power of businesses the state government ordered could stay open. musk and the county sparred over whether the company could stay open in mid-march. but with loosening restrictions that kept businesses from operating, alameda county forbids tesla from resuming work. that violates the equal selection process of the constitution and, quote, it should be declared void and without legal effect. california officials say they're trying to find middle ground. >> he just needed to give us another week to get this done right to make sure his employees came back safely. >> reporter: musk does have local supporters. fremont's may eor issued this statement -- the tesla ceo also has detractors.

a congresswoman from san diego uses a word we cannot say on broadcast tv to represent her feelings about elon musk. eric thomas, abc7 news. >> harsh words there. take a look at this, late last night musk tweeted, quote, i'm not messing around saying his constitutional civil liberties are being violated. our coverage of the pullout continues with cornell bernard detailing the company's threat to leave california. >> the last thing i want to see them do is leave. >> reporter: alameda county supervisor scott haggerty doing damage control saturday following a firestorm of tweets from tesla ceo elon musk, clearly not happy about not being able to resume manufacturing operations at his plant. >> we're focused on trying to save lives and i'm laser-focused on trying to get people back to work. >> reporter: earlier musk tweeted, frankly, this is the final straw. he will move headquarters to texas and nevada immediately. even if we retain fremont

activity at all, it will be inheoe nt howreated maki ce have a huge factory and trying to get production back on but at the same time trying to make sure it's safe for community as well. >> reporter: the mayor appearing to side with musk saying in a statement, as the local shelter-in-place order continues without provisions from major manufacturing activity such as tesla to resume, i'm growing concerned about the potential implications for our regional economy. elon musk is a new father welcoming a new baby boy into th world recently. scott haggerty wants to negotiate. >> let everyone calm down. he should go play with his new baby and we will work on getting the plant open. >> reporter: they reached a statement strongly urging alameda county health officials to come up with a plan to help tesla resume operations sooner than later.

>> we will be following that story. new this morning, another major question for california businesses are how are local wine industries going to bounce back after reopening? small bay area wineries have lost on average 40% to 60% of sales during the shutdown. i spoke to a top-line analyst rob mcmillan from napa county. he said wines will have to shift business models and many should start thinking now about marketing towards a younger crowd. >> i think at this point with older consumers sheltering in place, maybe a little less anxious to get out, you're naturally going to have that younger consumer in your tasting room. so i suggested to wineries in my blog that they think about maybe think about changing their casing treatments, like surcharging like uber does. super busy, you raise the price. if it's not busy, you lower the price, instead of a flat thing.

welcome back. a saturday spent surfing along the coast turned deadly for a 26-year-old fatally attacked by a shark this morning. we're learning more about the effort to try to save his life. rangers they did everything they could to save him. >> male, not conscious. lifeguard on scene. tourniquet applied. go ahead. >> we have cpr in progress on the patient. >> the stretch of manresa beach shoreline is closed to swimmers until thursday. take a look at this, you're seeing the first flight to go to india since the nation's coronavirus closure. abc7 was at sfl where you see hundreds of people anxiously waiting to go back home.

india stopped all inbounds flights on march 22nd because of the pandemic. people we spoke to were, in a word, thankful. >> we were stuck on baker street two months. i'm happy. >> we were desperate to go back home. i'm so grateful they offered us this. >> the people chosen for the flight were selected based on compelling circumstances. the inidian generconsul with visas and emergencies. today's special day for mom will be unlike any as abc7 martinez shows us, for all they've done during this pandemic. >> it's hard. all of the weight is on your shoulders. >> reporter: san ramon mother said everything is harder during the pandemic.

>> out of school, out of sight, sought of mind. >> reporter: this year mother's day will be different. people waited in lines for baked goods. this store in san francisco's castro district opened on friday just in time. >> we're sold-out. moms are what we hold on to, all of us. >> reporter: moms are what we hold on to at all times of the day. >> mommy! >> i'm working! >> reporter: psychiatrist dr. allison media out of san mateo says mothers meet a lot of demands. >> i have moms hiding in closets for a few minutes of quiet. i have mother momorta proentati having a sock stolen off her foot simultaneously. >> reporter: since you can't take mom to lunch or the spa, you can create a place for them to relax. >> i think it will be the year to really show we need you. >> reporter: from one mother to another, it's okay to not have it all together all of the time.

. >> the stitches are not going to pay your bills. you really have to take a deep breath and say, it's okay to give my kid some ice cream right now. >> reporter: zoom is listifting time requirements this weekend so they're offering unlimited video and voice calls so you can talk to moms as long as you like. lauren martinez, abc7 news. and an eastbound bay mother is being honored for her longtime service to the community. harriet slater has been named the mother oakland of the year. she's 82 mother of 4 and been part of oakland's arts community for decades. harriet's known for the midsummer musicals. she said she's honored to win the award and never takes herself too seriously. >> it's very nice to be honored. i'm just glad i don't have to get dressed up and go to the gardens tomorrow. i didn't want to have to bring my kids down here.

numbers in the low 50s to 60s. upper 80s earlier but now we have a strong southwest flow near the delta, 37 to 40 miles per hour and that's an indicator of the cooler air pressing across the day. the steady marine layer, persistent onshore flow. cloudy now, golden gate bridge sunny this morning. later this morning, breezy around.bay. you know the spots, the gusts of wind and then it's kind of nice. mild inland where numbers come down 5 to 8 degrees and scattered showers on the way could continue into wednesday for the north bay, favoring northwestern s northwestern sonoma county. we're looking at 70ss by the aftva upr s san jose and clouds increasi increasing, 60s later on. level one storm impact scale for monday and also into tuesday with light showers. we could see anywhere from a

third or better well to the north of us. the rest of us looking at the clouds, cooler weather about a .10th of an inch around the bay area with breezy winds. we track the cold front, area of low pressure and clouds, we're looking at this coming in late monday into early monday evening. it will be scattered about. and then we will see more showers into your tuesday. here we are in the afternoon. even reaching the sierra nevada, some light shower activity. this is wednesday afternoon, so we're still getting another push of wet weather, that unsettled pattern and looks like the amount here have been remaining consistent with most of the activity in the far north bay. couple hundreds to a .10 and .2 in other locations. the sunniest and warmest day of the week, upper 50s, which is cool with the steady onshore flow but you get away from the bayside communities and low 70s

breeze, keeps it cool at the shoreline. temperatures climbing through the 60s but as we get towards the later afternoon, they will top out at around 80 inland and dropping through the 70s for the numbers to be widespread 60s by about 6:00. we will talk about that rain shower chance and track it for you next time we see you. liz? this morning dr. anthony fauci and several key members of the coronavirus task force are in self-quarantine. we're in washington with the details. >> reporter: growing night a number of administration officials are in quarantine after possibly being exposed to the coronavirus. dr. anthony fauci, the nation's top infectious diseaseexrt will start a modified quarantine, which means he plans to stay home and work remotely while taking appropriate precautions to mitigate risk. also self-quarantining, cdc director robert redfield and stephen hahn. the news comes after the vice president's press secretary

katey miller tested positive for covid-19. on the job she regularly interacts with the vice president, administration officials and the press. >> she tested positive. she hasn't come in contact with me. >> reporter: miller is the second known case at the white house in one week. the president's personal valet tested positive too. and sources tell abc7 a personal aid to senior adviser ivanka trump, who does not work in the white house, has the virus also but has not been in recent contact with the first family. the president said he's not worried about covid-19 spreading through the white house. many staffers and guests now tested daily, teleworking is encouraged. >> we've taken very strong precautions at the white house. >> reporter: but in the cabinet room this weekend, the president sat closely next to senior military advisers. no one wore a mask. now former president barack obama is condemning the white house's handling of the pandemic during the call with staffers. this leaked audio obtained by yahoo! news. >> it's has been an absolute

>> nguyen received a citation and is due in court early july. this past week governor newsom linked the first white spread community case to a nail salon. he said it's fact that's where the first case came from in california, though he later apologized after nail owners complained he linked their businesses to the virus. and now a sweet treat. we mentioned steve's candy donating tons of candy to local nurses for national nurses week. now they're donating even more. we were there as volunteers packed up more than $120,000 worth of see's candy. they will be delivering it to bay area first responders, hospitals and health offices. such a tease this weekend, all ofut see'sy'nd closed and we can't go get it. meanwhile, gimz and clubs

are getting ready to reopen their operations. and how it might be changing. >> reporter: what might be like to walk into your favorite club or gym when they reopen? >> you will see a reimagined sper experience. >> reporter: there are 65 clubs around the bay area. three out of two cardio machines will be closed to maintain social distancing. they're planning on touchless check-in systems as members schedule time at the gym on their app. >> you will have the ability up to the day before to make a reservation. these reservations will be for one-hour workout increments. and after every one hour worth of workout increments, we will close for a expanding hakokoko s hour. >> reporter: they moved a lot of their equipment for cycling and rowing outdoors into zones by the pool. >> inside all of the machines have been spaced six to eight

feet apart. you will see taping off for pods that are 10 by 10 spaces and another piece is a reservation system. >> reporter: capacity limits may start 25% at the 14 bay clubs at the bay area. spas and saunas will remain closed. eventually lockers and showers would likely be limited to u.se of every third one. gyms and sports courts are repurposed with cardio equipment and limited child recreation activities. for group classes like yoga, there are taped boxes on the floor and you would no longer be able to bring your own mat. you have to use a club-issued sanitized one. gyms and clubs are working county by county to reopen in a phased approach. some hope by memorial day things like outdoor rec areas can get a green light. in walnut creek, leslie brinkley, abc7 news. still ahead, water, flowers, trees, the highlights of the

santa cruz camera. 54 in santa cruz. pretty out there but a little hazy and foggy. it should warm up though by this afternoon. on the peninsula, the menlo park fire district is now making house calls for fun. the fire chief said it's an attempt to make up for having to cancel junior firefighter visits to the station during this time. neighbors can request a fire truck swing by their house to spread a little socially distanced joy. check out the photos here in one neighborhood. it's a success so far. and you can request a visit on the fire department's website. one bay area woman is celebrating a milestone birthday this weekend. abc7 news was in south san francisco where rhoda turned 100 years old saturday. south san francisco's mayor was there to celebrate with a celebratory plaque and 100 balloons. rhoda's family said they're thankful she's lived this long. >> i feel old. i really am glad she made it 100

there's a messpecial mother day's for alex morgan. the cal bear soccer player announced on instagram her daughter was born thursday at 11:30 a.m. there she is, weighing 8 pounds, 5 ounces. yesterday morgan wrote, she made us wait longer than expected but i should have known she would do it her way and her way only, my super moon baby. and this mother's day we're the frontline of the coronavirus battle. their strength and courage of what was expected of them and setting an example for all of us. >> reporter: they are heroes on the frontlines of this pandemic and in the eyes of those who give them their most treasured title, mom. >> hi, mommy! >> hi. >> reporter: mothers like lindsey burrell holding dyeing patient's hands but unable to hung their children at the end of grueling days.

peninsula. but you get inland and that's where we have son from concord to livermore to walnut creek in dublin. we will be looking at the significant cooldown for inland communities, five to eight degrees cooler yesterday. you were approaching 90 in many locations as the ridge access was still overhead. now it shifted to the east, and has a response, that onshore flow is stronger through the delta. those southwest winds have been gusting through 37 miles an hour. that's a good indicator of that cooler air being transported from west to east. so steady, persistent onshore flow with us today. this is what we will tap into for the beginning of the workweek. in fact monday, tuesday, scattered showers, level one on our storm impact scale and into wednesday, looks like this could favor the north bay. showers that is. we can see widespread from .2 to maybe a .3 to half inch in the north bay and the rest of the bay area has trace amounts.

up in the northern kmurnties and then kind of washes out as it goes through the rest of the bay area. the cool onshore winds is the constant for everyone. warmer air shrinking down through the sacramento and san jaquin valley and level one system for monday, about .10 of an inch. then we will begin to see the rainfall kind of add up in the north bay. this is your monday evening and then into tuesday, notice we will see more showers throughout the morning hours. and then kind of lifts to the north but we will look for the chance again to continue into the evening hours. here's a look at the potential then. monday, tuesday, maybe a .10th of an inch in fremont. better than that to .2 to maybe .3 up in the north bay. south bay numbers, mid-70s for you. should be a nice afternoon from santa clara to cupertino. little cool and breezy from san mateo to redwood city and belmont. san francisco 59. steady onshore flow keeping it cool. 72 in petaluma with sun and sunshine in oakland.

welcome back. moms are being celebrated around the world today. one hospital in australia is marking the holiday with an 80-foot lie show. eight new and expectant mothers are being featured along with a message of love and solidarity. the hospital wants moms to know they're doing an incredible job and not alone during this pandemic. pretty cool. and we would be remiss not to mention our incredible mothers who made a difference in our lives. so we want to give each of our abc7's mothers a special shoutout. starting with my mom lori down in san diego. i wish i could be with her in person but i'm looking forward to our zoom dinner later and i believe she's streaming us live. hi, mom, i love you and i wouldn't be where i am without you. moving on to lisa, res don't morning moms with her three kids and two are here with you, right? you get to enjoy them. >> for sure.
