"abc7 news" reporter cornell bernard joins us live from san francisco with more on how families celebrated during this covid-19 pandemic, and they certainly got creative, cornell. >> reporter: yeah, they really did, dion. mother's day definitely being reimagined. no outings or long brunches, but families making the best of it, even if they couldn't be in the

same room. greg smith and his sister are hanging out with their 89-year-old mom, margaret. >> happy >> reporter: marg laret is sendg love and heg hugs from afar. margaret lives here, where visitors are not allowed due to covid-19. greg says the last time the family was together in the same room was christmas. >> this is rsurreal. but we got to be with her, which is what counts. >> reporter: the police department tweeted these pictures, mother's day treats, flowers, cards, and coffee for its working moms on duty. it's mother's day brunch to go here on santana row in san jose. the staff, happy to be busy, filling phone orders for food, flowers, even chilled champagne.

either fully or partial livanished. -- vanished. work has stopped for almost 60,000 restaurant workers, and other sectors which include tech jobs. that's more than 166,000 people affected. you can read the columns every wednesday and sunday in the san francisco chronicle. another question for california business, how are local wine industries going to bounce back? small bay area wineries have lost 40% to 60% of sales during the shutdown. rob mcmillen from napa county says wineries will have to shift business models and many should market towards a younger crowd. >> i think at this point, with older consumers sheltering in place, maybe a lilt less anxious to get out -- little less anxious to get out, you're going to have the younger consumer in

your tasting room. so what i have suggested to wineries is they thinkable maybe changing and think about surcharging. if it's super busy, you raise the price. >> right now, the averaging tasting fee in napa is about $45 a person. many smaller wineries rely heavily on their restaurants and tasting rooms, neither of which will be reopening any time soon. large, wholesale wineries are the winners right now at supermarkets. they're seeing a 60% increase in sales thanks to many people sheltering at home. the governor has set up several requirements for counties that want to move faster to reopen. it includes increasing testing capacity and no covid-19 deaths for 14 days. even so, some counties in northern california are plowing ahead any way.

they have all allowed businesses to reopen outside of the governor's plan. restaurants, hair and nail salon and shopping malls have all welcomed customers. >> everything that we have done has been consistent with public health and safety. i see no basis whatsoever to deprive them of federal dollars that they're entitled to just like every county in the state. >> bar owners say state alcohol and beverage alcohol officers have paid visits to their establishments, threatening to revoke liquor licenses. elon musk has plenty of taker it is he decides to move his business out of fremont. he threatened the move off the health officers threatened he couldn't resume making cars because of restrictions. the lieutenant governor of utah tweeted, just because you don't see it, doesn't mean it's not happening. we are very engaged with tesla

on bringing more busines utah. musk also received an invitation from the mayor of palo alto. the surfer killed in a shark attack yesterday has been identified as a small business owner who hand crafts surf boards. the attack saturday claimed the life of 26-year-old ben kelly, a resident of the santa cruz area. friends tell the mercur news kelly owned his own company making boards in a watsonville fiber glass studio. the attack happened just 5 miles west of watsonville. the area is closed where the attack happened until thursday a mile north and south of where kelly died. coming up, airlines crippled by the coronavirus pandemic are doing their part to give back. how they're repurposing in-flight meals. and i'm meteorologist drew tuma. it's a nice afternoon for

vice president mike pence is in self-isolation tonight after his press secretary received a positive coronavirus test late last week. the white house says pence tested negative today and will return to work tomorrow. three other members of the white house task force, however, remain in quarantine. here's abc news reporter andrew dimvert. >> reporter: several trump administration officials now under quarantine. dr. anthony fauci will start a modified quarantine staying at home and working remotely while taking appropriate precautions to mitigate risk. also in self-quarantine for 14

days, cdc director robert redfield and fda commissioner steven hahn. the news coming after two confirmed cases of the virus at the white house. one of the president's personal valet's, and katie miller, who is married to steven miller. saturday, white house staffers were seen with masks but with senior military and security leaders, no one in the room was wearing one. the virus taking a toll on the economy. more than 20 million jobs lost last month. unemployment now at 14.7%, the highest since the great depression. but the president's chief economic adviser trying to put a positive spin on the numbers, arguing the situation might not be permanent. >> 80% of it was furloughs and temporary layoffs which suggests strongly the core of the business is still in tact. >> reporter: a poll shows 64% of americans say reopening now is too dangerous.

but frustration is growing. states now grappling with how to get their economies reopened without sacrificing safety. >> there's evidence when countries relax their economic controls, the virus flares back up again. >> dr. ethan weiss returned to san francisco after volunteering in new york, who found himself on a crowded flight. >> i've been taking care of covid patients for two weeks and i'm more scared about getting on the airplane than going to the hospital. >> reporter: uniting not saying we have implemented a new deplaining process to promote social distancing. andrew dimvert, abc news, washington. as the country begins to still down more than 90%.

so instead of throwing away meals that would otherwise go to passengers, they're now being used to feed some of our community's most vuler in an. earlier this week, "abc7 news" was in san francisco's mission district where the latino task force held an event to distribute more than 7,000 meals. the covid-19 pandemic has disproportionately affected those in the mission. infection rates are higher because of overcrowded housing, and many service workers are either unable to work at all or can't work from home. >> now i'm living with nine people in my family, and we're living in a two bedroom apartment. so if one person gets it out in the streets, guess what? then there's -- the percentage of us getting it is higher. >> now, recognizing the need instead of throwing out unused in-flight meals, alaska airlines repurposed 12,000 pounds of food in the form of 40,000 snack boxes. >> it's kind of a larger effort for us, for a million meals

challenge, combined with repurposed food and monetary dnations, we have given million meals. >> yeah, it is remarkable. united and southwest airlines have also provided meals to hunger relief efforts across the country. the station house cafe in point raise station is shutting its doors after 40 years. in a facebook post, management said they were feeling confident they would make it through the pandemic after securing an emergency federal loan. but they say their lease was due to renew on june 1st and they can't afford the proposed rent increase. they say they're open to finding a new location for the future. here at abc 7, we're honoring the class of 2020 who have had to forego graduation ceremonies because of the coronavirus pandemic. roman correia is graduating from san jose high. mom says he plays baseball and football. next year, roman will play football for santa rosa junior

there. we have afternoon sunshine after the morning cast burned off. so we are quiet right now. in fact, we'll take you to the camera right now, a live picture outsideshowing you mainly clear skies and calm bay waters at this current moment. temperature wise, we certainly saw a drop in our afternoon temperatures inland today thanks to some cooler weather continuing to move on shore. 70 that current temperature in concord. 67 in hayward. 61 in the city. 57 in half moon bay and napa right now a little warmer than that at 73 degrees. here's live doppler 7, along with satellite. cloud cover burned off for some afternoon sunshine with you' show you the storm here. that low pressure will move through northern california, dragging a cold front through here, instigating those showers,

as well. so on the storm impact scale, it is the level one light system moving through monday into tuesday. and we'll find light scattered showers from time to time. the north bay will find a quarter to half an inch of rain. could see higher than that along the sonoma coastline because of some enhanced lift thanks to the front moving through. outside of the north bay, we'll finding less than a quarter of an inch of rain. so not a huge storm by any means, but it is a return to a wetter pattern. tonight, a lot of cloud cover. we remain dry tonight. it's really tomorrow morning that the showers move into the bay area. so future weather, 9:00 a.m. monday morning, we're beginning to see light showers in the north bay. and it looks like they'll stay there for the first half of monday. it's really not until monday evening by about 6:00, 7:00 in the evening that we'll find light showers working through the south bay, even into santa cruz mountains of the east bay.
