coronavirus. and more on that story right now. >> it is scary to go to work, you know, it's a small crowded place. it's a little bit risky. but you have to do it because you have to serve your country. >> in less than 48 hours, this past week, two white house staffers tested positive for coronavirus. first, the president's personal valet on thursday. then on friday, the vice president's press secretary, katie miller, now three key members of the coronavirus task force are following their own recommendations, self-isolating after possible exposure to covid-19 at work. dr. anthony fauci, the country's leading infectious disease expert, starting what he calls a modified quarantine, after testing negative for the virus, mostly working from home. >> the cdc director dr. robert redfield, determined who to have had a low risk exposure on wednesday. he along with fda commissioner dr. steven hahn will quarantine for 14 days. >> will you and other white house staffers be following their example? >> well, we'll take the advice

of the white house medical unit which is the best in the business. >> this week, the president has been in contact with both his valet and miller. the vice president was with miller on thursday, on this trip to virginia. she tested negative that day. the next day, she was positive. and six staffers who had close contact with her, were pulled off air force two to be tested. the vice president still traveled to iowa. >> yesterday, the cabinet room, president trump was closely surrounded by senior military officials, and his national security team, none seen wearing a mask. the vice president pence was not in that meeting. tonight his office says he is not planning to self quarantine and plans to be at the white house on monday. >> it is important to remember when someone has had confirmed close contact with a known case of covid-19, the recommendations for self-quarantine while monitoring for signs and symptoms of illness, over a 14-day period, that's really for the protection of others, as well as that individual.

other news now a six-month-old girl in the bay area is believed to be the first to contract both covid-19 and a rare disease. the girl known as zara was about to be released from lucille packer children's hospital after treatment for a rare condition called kawasaki disease, when she tested positive for the virus. that happened march 16th. her doctors say it is the first reported diagnosis of a child having both diseases. fortunately, zara has since gone home and showing no symptoms of covid-19. it's not clear just yet if her condition is the same as a mysterious illness that's affecting children in several states. passengers on board several airlines say they're concerned about a lack of social distancing on their flights. abc 7 news reporter luz pena spoke to several passengers who joins us live from sfo. >> reporter: and we have spoken to several passengers who have been flying different airlines and they're telling me they're concerned about their safety. and they are saying many of

these flights have been packed. >> petrified. yes. definitely. because it was absolutely ridiculous that we were that close to one another. >> kayla preston landed in san francisco from denver, several hours ago. she flew and says her flight was basically packed with little social distancing. >> people were very upset. people were saying why? >> reporter: in a statement, frontier replied to abc 7 news in part, the flight in question had a passenger load of 66%, so the aircraft was around two-thirds occupied. a similar story was told by san francisco resident elizabeth berger, this time flying american airlines. >> there were some empty seats in the middle, yes. you can see in the photo that i posted on twitter that it's clear that there are some empty seats in the middle but there's not, like it's not more than half. >> reporter: the bay area couple was flying to philadelphia on what they say was a packed flight. >> if you have to be on this flight and you're touching the

person next to you, or if they can take off their mask to eat and they're breathing right next to you, who knows. >> and they avoided removing their masks and said one of the passengers in the middle seat was a pilot. who american airlines later confirmed was indeed a pilot from a different airline, flying standby. american airlines said to abc 7 news that 25% of their seats were not occupied on this flight. and added, in part, american will not assign 50% of main cabin middle seats or seats near flight attendant jump seats, on every flight. and will only use those middle seats when necessary. starting tomorrow, american airlines is recovering all passengers to wear face coverings and in the process of providing wipes and face masks for staff and passengers. and they are blocking seats in the middle to help with social distancing and the first to

camera caught three mountain lion kittens on video. wildlife experts are swamped with calls. >> humans have taken a step back, which has allowed animals to come forward. >> reporter: lila travis is the director of the urban wildlife rescue in san francisco. in april, the volunteer organization took in 500 calls. three to four times what they normally do. >> here's a lot of urban wildlife that depend on human garbage. the food that we leave behind. and with us suddenly gone, that food source has also disappeared. >> because of the covid-19 pandemic, she tells me they have had to cancel a number of fundraising and now dealing with half the funding, and three times the animals. in fremont, jr stone, abc 7 news. tesla ceo elon musk has plenty of takers if he planned

community groups throughout the country spent mother's day feeding local health care heroes. the group chinese americans teamed up with other organizations to deliver thousands of meals to workers on the job and they called it food for love. the local chapter sent 300 hot lunches and flowers to santa clara medical center, in the spirit of giving back to those who were giving so much during this time. parents of saint thomas the apostle school in san francisco's richmond district are keeping front line health care workers well nourished through this pandemic. they've raised thousands to deliver meals to medical workers throughout the city. today, meals went to the nurses at st. mary's medical center. the school teamed up with eat americana on balboa street to cook up hundreds of delicious mother's day meals. >> wonderful food. a wonderful group who have gotten up early in the morning. and they have put their soul into the food. everyone who has the food can

we're tracking in the near term, on live doppler 7, along with the satellite, a bigger picture across northern california. you can see the clouds streaming in, from west to east. ahead of the cold front that will bring us our showers tomorrow. and wider picture shows you that area of low pressure, spinning off our coastline right now. that line of cloud cover is the cold front, and that will move into northern california tomorrow. and supply us with our rain chance. so on the storm impact scale, it's a level one light system, tomorrow, and that front will linger even to tuesday as well. so we'll track some light scattered showers, both days, and some rainfall totals, they will be the highest in the north bay, where we're thinking about a quarter to a half of an inch in most spots there, outside of the north bay, those rainfall amounts really drop to less than a quarter of an inch. not a lot of rain but nonetheless we are tracking showers over the next 48 hours. so tonight, we have that cloud cover thickening right now, some fog, right along the immediate

coastline, and mid 40s, to lower 50s, is what we are called to in the early morning hours. as we get you in tomorrow, monday morning, 9:00 a.m., you can see, showers are beginning to move onshore, in the north bay. and close to ukiah and cloverdale. most areas first thing tomorrow will start on the dry side. as you head into the afternoon, we're finding some light to moderate showers, perhaps, from santa rosa, points to the north, and then it's really in the evening, we find the best chance of those showers, kind of going south. by 6:00, 7:00 p.m. tomorrow evening, on monday, we will find the showers through livermore, into the santa cruz mountains, some showers saturday, and then into the east bay hills and it remains unsettled late tomorrow night, into early tuesday, and we will keep that shower chance, into tuesday, as well. but the front kind of lingers in the bay area. so total rainfall, it is kind of a nuisance storm on our hands with that level one light storm. you can see a half of an inch, in some spots in the north bay. outside of the north bay, we're

good evening. i'm eric thomas. two white house staffers have tested positive for covid-19. three of the government's top doctors are also in self-quarantine for the next couple of weeks because of possible exposure. vice president mike pence's press secretary has tested positive. pence's office says he is not planning to self-quarantine and he plans to be at the white house tomorrow. airline passengers say they are concerned about the lack of social distancing on flights to and from the bay area this weekend. flyers we spoke with said their flights were too fall. u.s. carriers say they have kept the number of passengers allowed on jets and blocked seats to provide extra space. many bay area families got creative to celebrate mother's day during the shelter in place order. some folks celebrated today while practicing social distancing. residents of byron park senior village in walnut creek took to the balcony to say hi to their loved ones. some states that are now easing restrictions are also seeing a rise in new coronavirus

cases. abc news reporter andrew has a look. >> reporter: the coronavirus continues to take a devastating toll on the economy. more than 20 million jobs lost lst month. unemployment now at 14.7%. the highest since the great depression. white house economic adviser larry kudlow says there's a glimmer of hope saying the bulk of job losses are temporary, but adding -- >> it's going to take a while for the reopening to have an effect. >> reporter: states now grappling with how to reopen safely. >> it is a risk if we don't do anything, it's a risk if we do this. what we have done is come up with the best practices, for businesses to reopen. >> reporter: stay at home restrictions eased in 45 states. in 15 of those states, the number of new cases is still on the rise. including texas, which saw a one-day increase of more than a thousand new cases. bus new york state is still under stay-at-home orders. the governor says some regions may see an easing of

restrictions sooner than others. >> it is all data-based and we will look at those number, and we will look at those data points to see where it is safe to open. >> reporter: in new york city where there has been some racial disparity in the enforcement of social distancing guideline, the mayor says the city will be taking a new approach. >> we're going to to increase intensely the number of public servants who are out there educating, providing face coverings, reminding people the rules, and helping people to get it right. >> reporter: as businesses do bgin to reopen across the country, many will enact new social distancing measure, including airlines, ethan weiss, flying home after volunteering to fight the pandemic in new york, writing, i guess united is relaxing their social distancing policy these days. united not commenting on why social distancing was not implemented. but saying we overhauled our cleaning and safety procedures, and implemented a new boarding and de-planing process to

promote social distancing. government officials also grappling with coronavirus, senator lamar alexander's chief of staff just tested positive for covid-19. the tennessee senator was set to chair a committee on the coronavirus here in dc next week but will now video conference in. abc news, washington. governor newsom is promising more guidance to come this week on how restaurants may be able to reopen in the state. seated dining is included in the next part of phase two of newsom's reopening plan. he says more specifics will come on tuesday. and we'll be putting out subsequent guidelines by sector, by industry, next tuesday, which will allow some more clarification, including checklists, we have a new checklist, that goes through, issues around hand washing, sanitation, how to address the needs of customers through pickups, and how we can make the pickup and dropoff process for deliveries, as well as pickups for customers, easier, and safer.

in relief funding to navajo nation. new details about a deadly shark attack, a 26-year-old surfer who died yesterday, off the santa cruz county coast is remembered as an entrepreneur, who turned his love for big waves into a promising career. he died at sand dollar beach at maresa state beach, near watsonville and a small business owner who crafted surfboards out of his home and friends say kelly had a lifelong love for the support and the ocean. >> he has so much knowledge of the ocean. surfing his entire life. he understood the area. traveling all over the world. he is one of those guys who understood the risk and hopes it doesn't happen but it wasn't anything where he was making mistakes. state park officials have closed the waters in the area where kelly was attacked through thursday. more cases to report tonight, of that mysterious illness threatening children, that's possibly linked to the coronavirus, as we reported earlier, there's a possible case

here in the bay area. tonight, abc news reporter stephanie ramos hears from families on both coasts whose children battled this rare illness. >> tonight, the rare and dangerous illness, possibly linked to covid-19, infecting more children. at least five deaths now under investigation. the number of cases, more than doubling, in new york city, 38 children now falling ill with pediatric multi-system inflammatory syndrome. 85 cases across the state. >> i'm deeply concerned. as a father i'm feeling the concern. i know other parents are feeling it. >> at least six states reporting cases, including washington, where 13-year-old anthony lawson nearly died. >> anthony just was getting more, where things weren't quite right. >> his family thought he was suffering from allergies but in a matter of days he became critically ill. >> take him to the hospital to get him checked out because it really could be the difference between life and death. >> anthony tested negative for

weather, tomorrow morning, it will begin first, as we see some light showers, the new high in cloverdale, most spots outside of the north bay, remain dry, throughout much of the morning, and early afternoon, and then in the evening, we'll find some light scattered showers, and moving to the south bay, the santa cruz mountains, the east bay hills as well, and those showers will even linger into monday night, and into tuesday morning. so it's kind of an unsettled pattern headed our way for the next couple of days. here is the accu-weather seven-day forecast. the next seven days, scattered showers tomorrow, and light showers into tuesday, as well. and still a little bit of a chance of a shower in the north bay on wednesday. otherwise, we will see a lot of sunshine, thursday and friday. and then another storm will arrive late saturday, into sunday. and right now, next sunday, it does look rather rainy, with the temperatures cool in the 50s and in the 60s. >> all right, drew, thank you. a mother's day concert shows up on a truck today.
