high cloudiness and here is our vantage point from the east bay hills where it's 49. let's map out the day and look at this friday because it is a nice friday. 49. and temperatures stay in the 60s and 704:00. that's pretty close to average and that's theill say that in the seven-day forecast. kumasi? >> thanks, mike. new overnight, a car rear ends a chp suv in hayward. a nissan crossed lanes that were closed on interstate 880 and then crashed into the suv that was parked in a construction zone. it happened just south of the a street off ramp around 1:30 this morning. two officers inside the patrol car are doing one person in the other car was checked out but they had minor injuries. the chp is reminding drivers, just be cautious where you're

driving in yaareas. you can expect the parks and beaches to fill up with people and enjoy the nice weather mike just told us about. with some parts of the stay-at-home order lifted, you might be confused about what is off limits and what is lifted. amy hollyfield is live with what we need to know. good morning, amy. >> hi, good morning. the weather may pull you here to the marina green in san francisco, but officials want you to stay apart from others. so, here's a look at what you'll find if you come out here this weekend. there are circles that have been drawn here to help everyone be reined in. you will see the circles at dolores park. they are meant to help everyone space six feet apart. if you are hoping to head to the beach this weekend, it will not be the same experience you're used to on a normal holiday weekend. in san francisco, also in half moon bay and in montara beach, you can go.

but parking lots are closed. they want you to walk or bike in and they want you to keep it moving. you can't set up a blanket and relax. there will be no picnicking or sun bathing. marin county has closed its beaches. you can't even go there. the shelter-in-place order is still in place. officials do know that you want to get out and exercise and have some fresh air, but they are still discouraging large get togethers. reporting live in san francisco, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> thank you, amy. now to the north bay where lake sonoma is reopening parking lots and trails just in time for the holiday weekend. that includes trails off of south lake trail head. now the boat launch, beach and recreation areas, those are still closed, though. a similar story it will reopen with some restrictions in place. boat launches and rv parks are open, but tent camp grounds and cabins and visitor center will still be shut down.

recently died because of covid-19. she said there were challenges talking with him during the shelter-in-place order but nurses let him use their cell phone to facetime and final moments spent with those taking care of him. . and to tell you more about that story today. tara is planning to hand out donated laptops and phones in oakland and san jose to help patients connect with their loved ones. president trump is under fire this morning for appearing in public, again, without a mask. this was during a visit to a ford plant in michigan that is now making ventilators. jobina fortson has more on this. good morning, jobina. >> good morning, kumasi, yes. the attorney general of michigan says that president trump is no longer welcome in the state after violating state law. the president said it was, quote, not necessary to wear a mask because he had been tested in the morning. ford warned the white house about the face covering policy

before his arrival. but companies said he complied during a private viewing of ford cars but then removed it for the remainder of his visit. >> in this back area, but i didn't want to give it. i had it in the back area. i did put a mask on. >> comes as we get a new idea about how americans feel about the president's response to covid-19. according to a new abc news/ipsos poll, only 39% of americans approve of his handling of the crisis as compared to 60% who disapprove. kumasi, i'll send it back over to you. >> thank you, jobina. in the east bay, oakland mayor libby schaaf revealing more about what reopening the city will look like. deeper in phase two the focus is on helping small businesses and they are waiving fees on stores using the three-feet of space in front of their doors.

>> during this time, you don't need a permit or to pay a fee to use that frontage zone if you need to set up a table or do something so that you can facilitate drive by or curbside retail. >> mayor schaaf says oakland is partnering with business districts to streamline for sidewalks and roads. it's an expansion of their slow streets program. as more stores and restaurants hope to open parks for people to use outside. first responders are making sure you stay safe this holiday weekend. check it out here. this rescuer dropping from a helicopter in san francisco all part of a training exercise to practice rescuing a surfer. the national park service wants to remind everyone about the rip currents and that conditions at the coast could change very quickly. mike has been telling us about the nice weather this upcoming holiday weekend. i'm sure plenty of surfers will be out there, mike. >> absolutely, julian. the temperature 52 degrees in that water right now. that is little refreshing

compared to the temperatures we have on land. let's take a look at what is going on. some neighborhoods well away from the water. here we are in the east bay and low to mid 50s in most neighborhoods and 60 in antioch and 5 in brentwood. those neighborhoods likely the warmest during the overnight hours in the 70s next week while the rest of us thankfully will cool in the 50s and 60s. so, we need to watch out for the extreme heat in those neighborhoods next week. upper 40s in the north bay. low to mid 50s just about every where else. here's a look from our roof camera. little bit of a breeze lingering from yesterday. flags on the ferry building as we look to the south from the embarcadero. not too hot for exercising. get that yard work finished now. you do not want to do it next weekend or next week. here's a look at the east bay. 56 at 8:00 and high clouds ask sunshi and sunshine through 2:00.

it's 5:13. big news for the south bay. today santa clara county will join the rest of the bay area in phase two to reopen some businesses. it will allow curbside pickup and logistic work to resume. solano county moving forward today and moving further into phase two. at 6:00 this morning dine-in shopping malls and swap meets they can all open with social distancing requirements in place. health officials are concerned that people are going to defy stay-at-home orders this memorial day weekend. sun bathing is not allowed at beaches. make sure you follow your county's rules if you're heading out tose this is the reason why people are defying those orders. look at the temperatures ramp up from 60s and 70s tomorrow to 80s and 90s by monday and monday is

already the early sunshine making it presence known and few high clouds and call it today seasonal with mostly sunny sky and cool tonight with a mostly clear sky and the weekend warming trend. yep, increasing sunshine and warmth this weekend but the hottest temperatures are next week. you can see a little area of energy and disturbance in the atmosphere. a little wrinkle, if you will. kicking up the high clouds and those will move through. a few more during the afternoon hours and that along with a little bit of a sea breeze. maybe not quite as brisk as yesterday. keeps us in the mid and upper 70s in the south bay and millbrae at 69. mainly low 60s along the coast. mid and upper 60s along downtown, south san francisco and sausalito. 74 to 79 through the north bay. along the east bay shore about 70 in richmond to fremont at 75 and as we move into the east vall 81 go hear lot air conditioni neigor ifeel, you know, people don't have jobs and don't have the money and how are

kumasi, it is the memorial day holiday weekend. >> how? what happened? it was just february. >> that's how i feel, too. but here we are somehow and we're going to celebrate it and enjoy this beautiful weather. >> right, mike? >> i am. absolutely. get most of the yard work finished in the next day or so and then kind of ride out the heat wave. really comfortable today and to a lesser extent tomorrow and then starts to get uncomfortable sunday inland and for a lot of us monday. kind of getting ahead of myself. heading out the door right now live doppler 7 and a few high clouds moving across the east bay and south bay and there they are from sutro tower. let's talk about numbers for the afternoon hours. low to mid 60s with our fastest breezes right now along the coast and taper a little bit this afternoon and expect brisk conditions there. low to mid 70s around the bay and breezy again this afternoon and, again, maybe not as aggressive as they were yesterday and we'll have mid to upper 70s in the south bay and north bay and east bay with 80 in antioch, the warm spot.

we'll talk more about that heat coming up in the seven-day forecast. let's get back to kumasi with the news. santa clara county will reopen phase two of reopening. residents there will be required to wear a face covering on any business or transit. laura martinez is live in martinez with more on this. good morning, lauren. >> good morning, kumasi. this is a positive step forward. retailers are now allowed to be open for curbside pickup. all transactions with customers must occur outside. now, this means stores within an indoor mall like westfield valley won't be able to reopen for pickup. free-standing stores or outdoor malls like stanford or santana row will be allowed to be open for pickup. also starting today in santa clara county it states that residents must wear face coverings when at any business and on public transit. the san jose city council will vote in early june on a proposal

that will require almost everyone to wear a face covering whenever they're in public. now, regarding the phase two reopening, car parades, which is that new celebration we've seen will also be allowed. now, outdoor museums, historical sites and public gardens can also reopen as long as visitors remain outside. reporting live in santa clara, lauren martinez, abc7 news. restrictions is also trying to build an army of contact tracers. it's looking for at least 1,000 volunteers to serve as resource. at least 50 county employees phave been trained for the job o far and health officials expect a lot more workers will be needed. contact tracing is critical to easing restrictions on reopening and the tracers can work remotely. happening today, solano county becomes the second county in the bay area to move further into stage two of reopening. at 6:00 this morning,

restaurants, shopping malls and swap meets. the county got the go ahead from the state late wednesday night. recreational activities scheduled to begin on june 15th and napa county was the first county to go further into phase two earlier this week. this morning, one of the nation's top experts is warning of a second wave of the virus. this all comes as all 50 states are starting to lift those restrictions and move back into prepandemic life. jobina is at the live desk with more. >> hi, julian. good morning. dr. robert redfield the head of the cdc is saying it is, quote, very likely there will be a second wave of the coronavirus. he is pointing to the rising temperatures in the southern hemisphere, excuse me, the cooling temperature and the spike in cases there. he is not ruling out a second lockdown. he does say that the cdc is committed to using the time that we have now to get the nation as

overprepared as possible. dr. anthony fauci is encouraging americans to take precautions. >> as you open up, even under normal circumstances in the best of circumstances, you are going to see infections. the critical issue for a successful opening is how effectively you address those blips. >> a big part of fighting covid-19 are antibody tests to protect consumers the fda identified 27 tests that it views as problematic. they have that information on their website. kumasi. >> all right, thanks, jobina. education is one of four key areas that abc7 news is committed to in the effort to build a better bay area. it along with our health, economy and changing workplaces is reshaping the bay area. oakland parents are being asked if they think their child is academically ready to move up to the next grade. the nonprofit go public schools is one of the organizations

working with oakland on this survey. >> families need that information and schools are, so let them plan around intervention and knowing where to allocate resources to make sure that we recover from this pandemic in the most like equitable just way possible. >> just as important for the district is knowing how parents feel about reopening schools. some of the options include continue with distance learning. students start classes earlier in july or have kids in school for half a day with some remote learning. and a uc system is getting rid of s.a.t. and a.c.t. requirements. the plan phased in over several years starting with the tests being an option next year. the goal is for the uc system to develop its own tests. uc plans to completely eliminate the use of the s.a.t.s.a.t.s.a.. by 2025. they worry it will lead to grade inflation and admission of less

prepared students. abc7 news is dedicating more resources to building a better bay area and laser focused on the issues that you and all of you are dealing with. the health, economy, education and how your workplace is changing. for college students it is up ending summer internships and many are having to do internp shs remotely and some are concerned on how the virtual experience may impact real world work experience and experts are saying it will actually benefit them. >> these students are seen as more resilient, more adaptable and more agile. they will have a leg up in the end. >> sounds like pluses to me. a new survey said they made adjustments to those internship programs for the summer. 46% of employers plan to use virtual environment. an inside look at the changes happening at cache creek casino. the currys in quarantine. steph, ayesha and their three

that's what i'm pretty much seeing across the board. i expected lighter traffic because of the holiday weekend and that is lighter than the light that we're already seeing. in the north bay, petaluma is following oakland and san francisco by launching its own slow streets program. the pilot initiative is currently under way on a handful of streets at opposite ends of the city. you can see the five streets on this map. the aim is to give neighbors safe spaces to walk, jog or bike while maintaining social distance. the city is asking for feedback and they expand the program t

weekend and how gorgeous it is going to be. if you like some summer warmth and the summer heat, that is going to follow. and then, finally, get rid of it. but this is a pretty nasty streak of some dangerous heat. we'll start with today where it's only 53 degrees from our roof camera. really nice day today our last mild afternoon. moderate to high heat risk next week as our hottest and longest heat wave of the year hits. here's a look at our progressive pattern. that omega block is that area of high pressure and on either side of that, you get the unsettled weather and that is where we are sitting on the front side of this omega block and that's why we had the breezy conditions and the cool weather and even the rain earlier this week. well that area that omega part of that block is going to sit on top of us and bring us the building heat over the weekend and the calmer conditions. no sea breeze except for right near the coast. let's talk about temperatures today. mid to upper 70s. 73 to 78 down in the south bay and 68 in millbrae and everybody else in the low to mid 70s on the prince. and low 60s along the coast with

welcome back, everybody. so, listen to this. drivers are seeing the cheapest prices at the pump over memorial day weekend in nearly 20 years. the national average is $1.87. and here in california, it's $2.80. the last time gas went under $2 a gallon leading up to the holiday was 17 years ago. gas now is about a dollar less than it was last memorial day. looks like prime day is being delayed. according to "wall street journal" amazon is pushing back its annual two-day discount sales event from july to september. it will be christmas in september this year, i guess. because of delivery and staffing shortages brought on by the pandemic. now, amazon has been struggling for months to really respond to a rush of orders since the stay-at-home order went into effect here. well, happening today, san jose state university will launch the class of 2020 graduate recognition website in lieu of a traditional graduation

ceremony. this will give graduates a chance to share personal slide that includes their name, degree and any honors they've obtained. the websites for each of the university's eight colleges will be available through the summer. the websites are not a replacement for live commencement ceremony. graduates will still have the opportunity to return to campus to walk across the stage at a future commencement ceremony possibly in december or next spring. i think that's so important. you work so hard and you put in your four years and they still deserve that recognition. yeah, that was probably my saddest day so far of this whole pandemic was the last few days or so. seeing my son come home and not getting to go through the traditional graduation. he got an e-mail, you got graduated. we'll have a virtual graduation. it was 30 minutes. but, you know, it wasn't the same. exactly. he didn't get to graduate in historic allen fieldhouse.
