good morning. we begin with breaking news out of san francisco just minutes ago word of a three-alarm fire burning at fisherman's wharf at pier 35. this is happening right now. video from the scene is coming in shortly. firefighters tell us additional structures and the "s.s. jeremiah o'brien" ship are threatened at this time. this is one of two remaining fully functioning liberty ships launched during world war ii. it is unclear what ignited the flames and crews say no one is hurt. we'll bring you any updates and video as soon as they come in. we want a quick look at your holiday weekend forecast. it is going to be hot this weekend.

here's meteorologist lisa argen. >> the heat begins to build today looking at temperatures a few degrees warmer than yesterday. it will be pleasant but nothing extreme yet. 52 right now in hayward. 52 in berkeley. looking at numbers in the upper 40s in santa rosa and 49 in pacifica. 24 hours ago we were milder. we are 3 to 4 degrees cooler right now. we'll look for temperatures to be pretty pleasant but by 10:00 looking at numbers in the 70s as we go through 1:00. you can see the heat building from our inland valleys. we're in the 80s around fairfield and antioch. upper 70s san jose. even as we get toward the early evening hours still plenty of 60s, 70s, even a few 80s. so the hottest days of the week arriving next week. i'll detail them for you in a few minutes, liz. >> thank you. happening today this holiday weekend combined with warm weather is sure to draw crowds to bay area parks. local officials will be on the lookout for packed areas. police in san francisco making

sure people are practicing social distancing. this is marina green and delores park. the city has painted the circles that are 6 feet apart. officers will be giving outon'te any. >> we again don't want to shut down any parks but if it comes to that point where things are out of control and people are not following the guidelines, we won't have a choice. >> those same social distancing circles are in place at the jackson playground picnic area at 17th and arkansas street. now to this morning sonoma county is surging ahead deeper into phase 2 to take advantage of the holiday weekend. relaxed rules mean some wineries, breweries, and restaurants can begin servingal. as abc 7's reporter luz pena reports -- >> the only consolation has been these sunsets. tony with two of his teammates founded the three per

haaniterade avaab fo shoas alwa, encouraged. if your holiday weekend plans include packing up and heading to the beach santa cruz county has a strong warning for you. don't visit unless you live there. as abc 7 news reports the county is seeing a dramatic influx of out of town tourists. >> the carousel isn't spinning and rides aren't running but the closure is doing little to keep people away. >> we're from irvine, california in orange county. >> we came from los gatos. >> minnesota. >> yes, he said minnesota. memorial day weekend in santa cruz county typically brings crowds of tourists but with covid-19 the message from the county is keep away. >> if you are out on the beach lounging, partying with friends, and doing things not allowed right now you could face a citation. >> reporter: from 11:00 to 5:00 p.m. local beaches remain closed. sam and his family got here at

3:00. >> we were not supposed to be on the beach so there was someone driving around telling us stay out ofter. >> reporter: after 5:00 people are allowed to exercise. those we spoke with said the need to stretch their legs led them this way. >> we've been following shelter in place but we need to get out. >> it seems kind of hypocritical but the kids live close by so we decided to walk out. >> reporter: walking fits within the guidelines but sun bathing and gathering on the beach do not. visitors are mostly from the bay area, central valley, and sacramento. residents have worries. >> santa cruz has been pretty contained overall and avoided a lot of cases but when people could from different areas it makes me a little concerned. >> reporter: others not so much. >> i was a little nervous coming to california. we're from minnesota. we've heard horror stories of people getting fined for not wearing a mask but it has been encouraging to see people on the beaches breaking quarantine rules. it's awesome. >> reporter: more concerning as

the county reports residents who have tested positive for covid-19 increased 20% last weekend. they fear a busy memorial day weekend could mean more cases. in santa cruz, abc 7 news. in the east bay this is what contra county officials want to avoid. abc 7 news was at the park in walnut creek yesterday. people there are distancing themselves from one another. no one is wearing a facemask as you can see. the department of fish & wildlife also warns people who plan to go boating this weekend to only do so wityown household. this far into the stay-at-home order it is likely you are aching to get outside and enjoy the nice weather. we put together a list of 13 bay area trails and wide walking paths so you can enjoy them while social distancing. this is one of our top searched stories right now on abc 7 news.com. while you're there we have a list of ideas on what you can

webc 7ews.com and our holiday your abc 7 news app. it is the first weekend of the new san mateo testing site located at the ymca on del street in east palo alto. testing is free. appointments are required. important 300 people are registered to be tested today. the site is full for the weekend but you can still make an appointment for next friday and saturday. also happening today a blood drive as the nation faces a shortage during this pandemic running from 10:00 to 4:00 today at artichoke joe's casino in san bruno. schedule an appointment or walk in. the red cross says this will help ensure a stable blood supply during covid-19 and as fire season approaches. new developments meantime in the push to reopen religious houses of worship in california this morning. we are learning a divided ninth federal appeals court in san francisco has refused to allow governor newsom to immediately

reopen in-person services. >> we deeply respect and admire the faith and devotioncaha utes. >> newsom said friday during his briefing they'd be releasing guidelines for religious groups no later than this coming monday. the comments came not long after president trump threatened to override governors who don't open churches. >> governors need to do the right thing and allow these very important essential places of faith to open right now. for this weekend. >> yesterday the cdc released its own guidelines for services including limiting attendance and potentially reducing singing. a livermore pastor spoke to abc 7 news about his new measures for parishioners. >> they can sit with their immediate family or those they come to church with. everyone else we ask that they put three chairs between them

ri couy will allow them to start on june 1st and two weeks after that for san francisco county. this doesn't mean every kid is going to get to be a camper. >> we are balancing risks. we are not saying this is risk free. >> reporter: this is the marin county public health officer. what was it about the covid numbers in marin that allowed you to make this decision? >> adequate testing capacity, expanded tracing capacity. right now there are four people in the hospital across the county with covid-19. we've had very few cases among children. >> reporter: while the news of camps opening is exciting for worn out parents and their restless kids -- >> she is doing well with at home learning but is missing the social element. >> reporter: the new guidelines mean not everyone will get a spot at camp. capacity is crushed by limiting the group size to 12 kids. chuck collins is the ceo of ymca san francisco which during a

nonpandemic summer runs camps for 2,000 to 3,000 children in marin, san francisco, and san mateo counties. >> we will have probably one-tenth of that. we are hoping to have spaces for 200 to 300. already over 500 families have really requested camping for their kids. how will we make those choices? >> reporter: ymca will focus on helping the most vulnerable families and students this summer at ymca facilities and rec and park spaces. he says if cities and counties would open up public school campuses where the y usually hosts camps they could enroll more kids. >> we need more space capacity because there are so many children out there that need our services. >> reporter: san francisco and marin's decision to open camps isn't necessarily permanent. >> for now the data allows us to feel like this is a safe step to take. but if we have a surge during the summer we may need to change the decision and close camps.

>> reporter: they include staggered arrival times, enhanced cleaning, and temperature screenings. chuck collins says the ymca is planning for three camper temperature checks a day. while summer camp is back on it will certainly not be camping as usual. in the newsroom, abc 7 news. >> we're committed to helping you and your children in this time of the changing world. today you can donate to families trying to close the digital divide. the inclusion partnership is asking for any laptops or tablets to be donated to students. the drive starts at 10:00 this morning at the bank of america on lincoln avenue and a second event will be held on wednesday. new details in the timeline to get back to class. oakland unified says the first day will still be august 10th but as of right now no decision whether students will be showing up to the classroom or logging in from home. in a letter to parents yesterday, the superintendent says she anticipates resuming classes with distance learning

with plans to start in-person classes for some students as soon as it's safe. a spokesperson says it all depends on what happens over the summer. >> it won't be a normal return to school as we have every year. it won't be every student in every school across oakland or across the bay area. that is probably not going to happen. i think that most school dstricts are planning for that, that it is not going to be everybody in school all at once. what will it be? we're still trying to figure that out. >> a district proposal of how to approach the school year is expected by july. parents and students will have a chance to weigh in with more details on that coming soon. one of the more high profile unified alums actor tom hanks gave a special message celebrating students at his alma mater. >> i'd like to think that just as skyline high school provided me a direction and instinct to follow the same has happened for you. good luck to you. and, also, congratulations.

>> hanks graduated from skyline hospital in 1974. he popped in yesterday with those words during their virtual graduation. though it is hard to compete with tom hanks we here at abc 7 also want to give our congrats to all of skyline's graduates. gosh, that is pretty cool, lisa. a virtual graduation. you're still a little bummed. then tom hanks pops up. >> pretty cool. i think those kids definitely appreciate that. maybe appreciating the warmer weather, although this weekend is going to be very pleasant but as we get through the end of the weekend you'll begin to feel the effects of the heat that is going to be building. now, one of the reasons are the overnight lows which once again tonight will drop to readings like this in the 50s. we even have some 40s up toward ukiah, 56 oakland. 52 hayward. so the typical overnight lows that help to cool us off with us now and into your saturday night but after that, looks like we'll

have some warm readings and the heat is going to build and stay with us right on through the next several days. so we'll talk about the details but right now looking at a nice view here from the roof camera. a nice way to wake up to this view, spt isn't it with the fla water and the sun coming up. warming trend continues today. the heat intensifies on memorial day the holiday and record temperatures with us, record ik wednesday and for some of our inland valleys could last into thursday. so as a result, the national weather service has issued an excessive heat watch from 11:00 monday through thursday. could start to get a seabreeze on thursday which should help some of the folks here along the coast and, notice, the marin county coast in san mateo coast line out of the excessive heat watch and everybody else looking at temperatures well above average. by the time we get to tuesday, could see numbers over 20 degrees above average in our inland valleys. lots of heat headed our way. another detailed look at

memorial day in the 80s around sausalito. looking for mid 70s in the city. so we'llplight,the. it is going to be weak day to day, getting weaker. today a little gusty at times. as we go into our inland valleys 90s to a hundred degrees for your holiday and then on tuesday records will be likely as we're going to be even warmer. low 100s from fairfield around antioch. how about near 80 degrees in san francisco? and then into wednesday looks like very little change. still, the heat. that's why we have the excessive heat watch. unless air right by the coast, say even a half mile to a mile away from the coast, you'll definitely feel the warmup. today is pleasant with upper 60s from san francisco. breezy at the shoreline. 76 in oakland. 83 up in napa. 86 concord. down around the santa clara valley look for low 80s. overnight tonight we're talking

welcome back. we want to get right back to our breaking news this morning out of san francisco. a four-alarm fire now burning right now at a warehouse at pier 45 at fisherman's wharf. you can see the video here. brand new video from a viewer from the scene. you can hear him saying there this is huge. just totally stunned. this is happening now. firefighters tell us additional structures and the "ss jeremiah o'brien" ship are threatened. it is unclear what ignited the flames. crews say nobody has been hurt. we are closely monitoring this fire right now, which has quickly been upgraded to a four-alarm fire at pier 45. we are going to keep watching this right now, working to get more video and more information and we'll keep you posted as we learn more. this is new video just in of a fire happening right now at pier 45.

all right. new this morning voters will des iefd this november if uber and lyft drivers can qualify for benefits. if approved they would be exempt from assembly bill 5 the state law that says companies must provide benefits like worker compensation and disability insurance. earlier this month drivers organized a protest at uber headquarters in san francisco calling for the company to drop its effort to repeal the bill. looking at how our jobs will be changing as we recover from the pandemic is a major focus of building a better bay area. this morning many google employees are working from home but their boss says they may return to the office once they're given the go ahead. google's ceo told wired he thinks there are still good reasons to get people together in the same space so teams can collaborate and share ideas. earlier this week mark zuckerberg said he thinks half of the work force will be working from home by the end of the decade. twitter's jack dorsey said most

jeremiah o'brien" ship are threatened because of this fire. this is a predawn fire. when we were coming on the air around 5:00 a.m. this morning right before i could hear from our studio here on the embarcadero and front street the alarms outside of crews on their way to battle this fire. so there is an effort right now to put down these flames. you can just see it continues to just -- it just continues there. you can see the red flames or yellow flames there, and the smoke coming up this morning. first responders there. you can see all around in the water as well. again, firefighters tell us additional structures and the "s.s. jeremiah o'brien" are threatened. the ship is one of two remaining fully functioning liberty ships launched during world war ii. it is unclear what ignited the flames right now. crews tell us no one has been hurt at this time.

coast. 47 santa rosa. 53 concord. with the cooler start this morning, enjoy it. we'll have a warmer finish anywhere from 3 to 8 degrees warmer from our readings yesterday. yesterday was a nice day. by 10:00 we've got some 70s in our inland east bay but widespread 60s elsewhere. by 2:00 it is in the low 80s from antioch to fairfield. getting there in concord. 70 in oakland. we still have several degrees of warming. by tonight at 6:00, we'll see the numbers drop back. and not a lot of fog to speak of. we'll talk about a much warmer sunday and excessive heat warning arriving by early next week. >> thanks, lisa. erica'or ter end a big test in from the covid-19 pandemic. ahead of the memorial day holiday all 50 states have eased restrictions to some degree. health leaders are still urging social separation and face masks while outside. we have a look at the week ahead from new york's rockaway beach. >> reporter: memorial day weekend like no other as all 50

states relax restrictions and the coronavirus death toll crosses 95,000. in new york a tragic start to the holiday in rockaway beach. one man dead. pulled from the water. swimming is banned in all new york city beaches due to the pandemic. >> you can see on the beach here the flags are up. there are no lifeguards. the beaches remain closed. >> reporter: you can see the two red flags. they mean no swimming. walking on the beach is allowed. the nypd on patrol urging people to keep a safe distance. >> if you just want to take in the simple beauty of the beach it is there for you. but with a lot of good, watchful eyes from the parks department and the police department. >> reporter: some beaches will keep gates open until capacity reaches 50%. concession stands will not be open to avoid lines. >> we expect people to get out, go to parks, beaches, etcetera. w we understand that. we have to remain vigilant at the same time.

>> reporter: thousands along the east coast hit go-to beaches adapting to the strange new normal. in massachusetts today many wearing masks in the sand. it is required when distancing is not possible. >> i'm so happy. i love it. i'm so happy i'm out of the house. >> reporter: this woman dipping her toes in the water while wearing a mask in veach veach today. in new jersey at point pleasant beach officials saying it can hold about 197 groups in roughly 18 square foot areas. the mayor warning people to follow the rules. >> if they don't, we'll ask them politely to make sure they adhere to it and if they don't do it after then we'll ask them politely to leave. >> reporter: in south florida, miami dade county, and the city of miami beach, voting to open beaches and hotels on june 1st. florida's governor lifting all restrictions on summer camps and children's sports. >> i think our kids have been out of organized activities for a couple months now and i think that we need to have a pathway to get it back. >> reporter: many national parks also easing restrictions. the south rim of the grand

canyon opening with limited access today. the nation's leading infectious disease expert dr. anthony fauci looking forward to getting outside. >> i plan to go out for nice walks and hikes over memorial day and i'm going to do it with care with a mask on. >> reporter: in new york city right now lifeguards are training to be ready for when the beaches open. in new jersey at point pleasant beach, lifeguards are going to be equipped with masks, gloves, and gowns. in california if you're not in the water you must be wearing a mask. abc news, new york. presumptive democratic candidate joe biden is back tracking comments he made against african americans. on a radio show he said, quote, if you have a problem figuring out whether you are for me or for trump then you ain't black. biden says he shouldn't have tried to be in his words a wise guy. >> i don't take it for granted at all. and no one, no one should have to vote for any party based on their race, religion, or

background. there are african-americans who think trump is worth voting for. i don't think so. i am prepared to put my record against his. that was the bottom line. and it was really unfortunate. i shouldn't have been so cavalier. >> when asked about a potential running mate biden said multiple black women are being considered. he doesn't expect a decision until july. let's get back to breaking news this morning out of san francisco. that plume of smoke just seems to be getting bigger every time we look at it. this is a live picture right now of the four-alarm fire burning at a warehouse at pier 45 at san francisco's fisherman's wharf. firefighters tell us additional structures and the "ss jeremiah o'brien" ship are threatened right now. again, we really do not know much at this time. we just know that reports started coming in early this morning as i said before i heard frst responders and firefighters. i could hear the sirens from our studio here on the embarcadero at front street just before we came on the air so there is a

important as ever as people around the world wade not just through a viral pandemic but a surging mental health crisis. >> we are experiencing a parallel pandemic exactly exaggerates existing issues. it can cause people to feel more isolated. it can cause people to potentially self-medicate more. >> reporter: zach grew up in san francisco and now lives in los angeles and is a mental health advocate. >> i needed to heal and recover myself. >> reporter: his struggles began after his father died by suicide at home in marin in 2014. >> my becoming a mental health advocate stemmed from the trauma and loss i experienced after my dad died by suicide. i experienced serious low point in my life. i felt completely, emotionally disregulated and was experiencing ptsd and was self-medicating to the point where i wanted to not feel anything.

okay. right back to our breaking news this morning out of san francisco. you can see a live picture right now of the plume of smoke coming up at pier 45, at fisherman's wharf in san francisco. before we were really seeing flames. you can still see some names there. it is mostly the gray smoke taking over at this time. we first got reports of this fire around 4:40 this morning. that's when that san francisco fire department first put an alert out abouttf a one-alarm fire at this time. it's now been upgraded to a four-alarm fire. i want to show you video from a stringer we have at the scene who got this video as firefighters battle these flames and you can see them on the ground there. san francisco fire department there trying to put out what is a fire in one of the warehouses

at pier 45. so at least one of the warehouses at pier 45 is burning right now. we do not know what ignited these flames whether it was arson, you know, what caused it. those are going to be a lot of the questions we're still working to figure out. we're told at 6:00 a.m. there is a media gathering area by the fire so hopefully we'll get more information at that time. crews do say no one has been hurt right now. but again, firefighters say additional structures including the "ss jeremiah o'brien" ship are threatened because of this fire. this is one of two remaining fully functioning liberty ships launched during world war ii. this fire large, big, can be seen. i think i saw one of you guys post on twitter that you could see plumes of smoke from your home in daly city. so if you are waking up right now and you smell smoke or see smoke, it is this fire most likely, burning at pier 45 in

san francisco. a four-alarm fire. you can just see that smoke there. i know lisa has been posting updates on twitter, too, and talking about how the calm winds are allowing the smoke to travel upward which is why we're seeing such height i think. she can explain a little more later. why we're seeing such height with the plumes of smoke there. again, we are working to get more information for you on what caused this fire. if there have been any injuries, at this time we haven't been told there have been any injuries. we hope that that continues to be the same. evacuations are reportedly under way. we will continue to uat througho the morning and on abc7news.com. we have a live stream going so you can track that there as well. on our facebook page as well. lisa, i just mentioned you if you want to talk about that, how the winds are helping the plume of smoke rise. >> usually when there is any sort of wind the smoke disperses

all right. welcome back. there you see it. the plume of smoke which seems to be dissipating just slightly, possibly, this morning. firefighters battling the four-alarm fire at pier 45 this morning. we first got word around 4:40 this morning when the first tweets went out from the san francisco fire department. we could hear the sirens at ourstion henak way there to help battle this

fire. it seems like maybe some progress has been made. if you have been watching this morning you could see those flames burning earlier and now just a few -- there is a little bit there in the corner but it seems like they've made good progress. let's get a check of the weather now with lisa argen. another big story is going to be the heat. >> we get to enjoy a couple nice days but then it is going to build day after day. by the time we get to monday our excessive heat watch goes into effect and is going to take us through thursday. but it looks like perhaps we'll get some cooling by thursday at the coast, a long way out. once we get several hot days, you know, you'll want to hear about cooler weather. today it's with us, the cooler weather, to start out anyway. l. a bit of haze over the city right now. we are looking at not only the comfortable morning but check out san rafael. if you're out for a walk today with the dog we'll be starting out at about 7:00 with numbers in the 60s.

it is going to be clear so you'll want the sunglasses and as we go through the morning hours, we've got plenty of 70s mid and upper 70s but by about 2:00 reaching about 79, 80 degrees, and then the numbers stay warm through 4:00. this is around parts of the north bay. elsewhere temperatures will have once again the nice spread from the coast to our inland valleys. going as the heat builds but the seabreeze will be progressively getting weaker and weaker as the days go on. now, today that seabreeze up to 20 miles an hour could be gust eight times. live doppler 7. pretty nice into the low 70s today. 53 downtown. 49 in redwood city. 44 in gilroy. some cool spots with the clear sky, 47 in pacifica. and the light winds as we look at the golden gate bridge and you can see that clear conditions and the flag there

not moving right now. so the calm winds. 47 santa rosa. in the 40s in napa. low 50s by about 2:00 into that seabreeze and you can see the haze from mount tam. we have a little fog at the coast and looking at the higher relative humidity in the atmosphere but as we go through the next several days those winds switching out of the west to a light north breeze for some of you and that is going to dry things out a bit. we are not expecting winds to get very strong. therefore not expecting high fire danger but, still, some very hot conditions out there. the warming trend begins today. heat intensifies through the holiday memorial day and records are likely as we get into early next week. the hottest days are expected to be tuesday and wednesday. look at memorial day where monday in concord could be 96 degrees. the average high is 78. you see the averages in this second column here ranging from 12 to 18 degrees above average. redwood city should be the mid 70s.

right back to our breaking news out of san francisco this morning this is brand new video of the four-alarm fire still burning right now at a warehouse at pier 45 at fisherman's wharf. the historic pier 45 there. this is video from a stringer on the scene. he was there as the several firefighters were battling those intense flames. the san francisco fire department just said they are making progress on this fire. and that there are still no injuries. so some good news there as they battle this four-alarm fire that we first got reports of around 4:40. i could hear the sirens from our station as we were coming on the air as first responders and firefighters were making their way there. you can just see the smoke at a warehouse, one of the warehouses at pier 45. it is unclear if it spread beyond just this one warehouse but this is the historic pier 45

at fisherman's wharf. and at least we've been told that the "s.s. jeremiah o'brien" ship is threatened. we haven't gotten an update to know how much the fire has been contained. we just know they are making progress. this is video here from a witness who could see it maybe from the balcony this morning. and people all around the bay area are saying they can see the smoke rising up above the city and spreading throughout the bay area. someone tweeted out they could see it from daly city from their home there. really the smoke is spreadig and you can see it on the horizon as we show you other live pictures as well. the good news is they are making progress but you can just see the flames there at this -- as this was burning this morning. so again we have a crew on the way. we will hopefully get you some more live pictures and a live update coming up soon. we're told there should be an update soon for the press. we'll try to get more information as soon as we can.
