protect the fire from spreading to other warehouses as well. currently again we have no injuries to the fire. we have multiple agencies assisting us with determining if there is any damage to the pier itself or the structural integrity of the pier. we'll have observations on that at a later time. our fire investigators are on scene. this investigation will take some time and will have information on the cause and origin at a later date. >> amazing work on all of those firefighters' part, lieutenant. what do you know about evacuations? we heard reports there were some evacuations in the area overnight or early this morning. did that happen? how many people? >> so the evacuations were for the firefighters and we're starting to see the building collapse or the walls start to collapse so we evacuated firefighters from that perimeter or the outside of this fire just to ensure we had their safety zone. that allows us to get accountability for all of our firefighters to make sure everybody is safe at which time
6:45 am
we positioned a few that were not damaged and continued to aggressively fight the fire. there are some warehouses that have night crews adjacent to this and we also evacuated those. these are commercial okay pansies only. no residential occupancy. >> what do you know of the cause of the fire? you are investigating whether there could have been anyone inside overnight. any sense of what started this fire? >> again, our cause and origin will be determined by our joint fire task force which is the task force comprised of seasoned san francisco firefighter investigators and seasoned san francisco fire investigators within the police department. this takes sometime as we're actively fighting this fire. when the fire is completely out they'll be able to start the process of going through the building for cause and origin. at this time they are interviewing individuals that may have witnessed this and

looking at other dynamics with the fire toelp , leadential poi occupancy, we are aware that within this district homeless individuals will encamp in buildings and warehouses. that is something of grave concern. that is why we have continued to have investigators aggressively trying to confirm if anybody saw anybody going into this building look ath video camera footage, etcetera. to our knowledge we do not have anybody that is in the building. to our knowledge, there is nobody that was supposed to be in the building. and we have no victims. >> all ao a i ers other structures at this time that are being threatened. this is obviously an iconic pier. there are tourist attractions there. you were able to save the "uss jeremiah o'brien" ship.
6:47 am
are there other buildings currently threatened? >> no. we placed our fire apparatus again we have to come up with evaluations of safety of our firefighters and the ability to protect the iconic structures here on the pier. these commercial buildings. and ensuring there is no life danger. we are lucky and happy to say that we were able to protect the exposure buildings or adjoining buildings from being damaged by the fire. >> that is good news. my final question for you. what have been some of the challenges in fighting this fire this morning? the weather conditions? did that impact trying to fight this fire? >> again, we aggressively trained, you know, we call them drills or training on a weekly basis. specifically, almost at this exact location and other areas

within these piers on how to get hose lines to the piers, how to innovate the fire boats into aggressively fighting the fires. how to check other piers, etcetera. so some unique items, we utilized two fire boats, the "st. francis" fire boat number 3 and the newly acquired fire rescue boat number 1 which is used for rescue operations and firefighting operations. and then were able to draft water, unlimited water from the bay. it basically just recirculates through the incident and is able to put thousands of gallons of water a minute on to the fire which again contributed to saving the "jeremiah o'brien" and the rescue boat 1 really helped hold the fire from spreading to adjoining warehouses on the water front from the other side of the fire.
6:49 am
we special our hose tenders. we called out hose tenders which has thousands of feet of 5-inch hose which is large diameter hose so the equivalent of having basically an above ground fire hydrant system. we were able to put those into fire hydrants not within the system here so we could get more water that is not going to have a pressure issue to help us fight this fire. so a lot of dynamics go into this. a lot of different agencies assisting us. and we wouldn't have been able to put this fire out if we didn't have our pre-established, collaborative partnerships with all of our citizens here in the community who calle11 immediately d were able >>ornkoull so mu. i th your time. very much appreciated.
