roaring flames lit up the sky as a massive fire ripped through a warehouse at pier 45 early this morning. the plume, eerie and visible from miles away as firefighters worked to keep the blaze from spreading. it is part of fisherman's wharf, and not far from the famous pier 39 and serves to the home for historic ships and a museum. i'm dion lim. >> i'm eric thomas. sky 7 was over the scene as the warehouse smoldered and firefighters continued to pour water on it. it shows how large it was and how close it came to spreading

to the ss jeremiah o'brien. this is what it looked like. you can see the iconic sign in this video with the flames billowing in the distance. cornell bernard has been following the story all day and joins us live now with an update on the investigation. cornell? >> reporter: eric, this fire officially contained just hours ago, although we are seeing some smoke coming from the fire scene. the fire happened at a warehouse at the rear of pier 45. it was destroyed, but the famous world war ii liberty ship, jemi this monster fire. several people on board at the time escaped. the flames were intense, jumping 100 feet into the early morning sky. a warehouse at pier 45 at fisherman's wharf fully engulfed. >> it's a huge fire. >> reporter: people from across the city captured video of the

blaze. 150 firefighters battling to put it out. >> unfortunately, this building is a complete loss. all four corners haveeasurning and below this historic pier, made of concrete and wood, built in 1926. >> we do have or did have some fire underneath the pier, which we were able to address. >> reporter: on the bay, tense moments as the fire boat, st. francis, fought to save the historic world war ii ship, the ss jeremiah o'brien from ruin. she was docked just feet from the fire.nyitive save tsistorical vessel with more emphasis on this being the beginning of memorial day weekend. >> reporter: the ship's captain beyond grateful. >> it sounds corny at times, but that's the first reaction. it's a miracle.

and it's because of the fire department. >> reporter: the warehouse that burned housed offices and fish processing equipment for seafood companies. joe conty is adding up his losses. >> maybe two trucks and one or two more may be damaged. >> reporter: the cause of the fire still unknown. >> our investigators are on scene, this will be a long process, as it's a building. >> reporter: wind is now blowing a lot of smoke from that fire scene. investigators are look at surveillance footage. they say homeless individuals have been seen inside the warehouse before. the only injury today, one firefighter treated for a cut to his hand. tonight, authorities now looking at the structural integrity of this peeier. they need to make sure it's safe before it can reopen to the public. live in san francisco, fisherman's wharf.

deaths. arkansas is going that you second peak of covid-19 cases, but the state's governor adds there are plenty of beds to accommodate patients, and hundreds of protesters again gathered outside the capital in sacramento to protest the governor's stay-at-home order. meantime, in-person religious ceremonies will remain off lifts in california following a judge's ruling. newsom has been meeting with religious leaders and said he would announce reopening guidelines on monday. supporters of the suit say the state is violating the religious freedom of the church. yesterday's decision falls in line with one earlier this month when a federal judge ruled against religious assemblies in the interest of public health. a surge in demand has led east palo alto to extend testing. a testing center was set to close today, but 550 people

signed town g signed up to get testing yesterday and today. it will be open next friday and saturday. testing is free and available regardless of symptoms and an appointment is needed. a one-day pop-up testing clinic is set to open monday in mountain view at ringstrof park. no documentation or preregistration is required. the santa clara department of public health is encouraging more people to get tested as more businesses reopen. the memorial day holiday weekend is usually considered the unofficial start of summer. but the pandemic has many under stay-at-home orders. many have started to reopen, but a half-dozen states are seeing increases of the virus. >> reporter: with many americans eager to get outside and enjoy the memorial day weekend, after months of stay-at-home

orders -- >> i'm so happy. i love it. i'm just so happy i'm out of the house. >> reporter: states have been rolling back restrictions on beaches, golf courses, mountain trails and more. while all 50 states have reopening plans under way, six are seeing a rise in cases. north carolina reporting its hi highest one-day total and in alabama the state's health care system is pushed to its limit. >> right now, if you're from mon montgomery, and you need an icu bed, you're in trouble. >> reporter: the cdc has updated covid-19 guidelines, saying the virus mainly spreads directly from person to person and doesn't spread easily from contaminated surfaces. it's also estimated at least a third of the people who contract covid-19 are a-symptomatic. in new jersey, many heading to boardwalks, but some are hesitant to join crowds. >> i'm actually headed out of town for the weekend. so i'm going to stay away from

it. >> reporter: as some states begin to allow places of worship to open their doors, president trump is calling on governors nationwide to allow all churches, mosques and synagogues to open, calling them essential. ? in america, we need more prayer, not less. >> reporter: the president threatening to override governors who don't open placing of worship those his authority to do so has been questioned. some public health officials warn reopening too quickly could lead to a spike of the virus. >> if they're too close together, if we're singing. if we're unmasked, these are the types of measures that will cause this virus to spread like wildfire. >> reporter: the cdc advising people to limit singing and promote social distancing in congregations and minimize the sharing of worship materials. andrew denver, washington, d.c. people are not looking to leave cities for the suburbs just yet, according to zillow. it had projected a bit of an

boy, dreams do come true, even during a pandemic that has scrapped social events and pushed many of life's big milestones into the virtual world. a couple got to tie the knot today right in front of the chase center as their fairy tale wedding happened with social distancing in mind. this actually was plan b. they had other ideas until the pandemic hit, but the bride was not about to let the outbreak put love on hold. >> this is absolutely sur rilre. we know we are fortunate to be in this situation. >> reporter: they began their fairy tale romance a year and a half ago. >> we fell in love quick, and when it's right, it's right. and it just feels right. >> magical. >> reporter: and this past december, these disney fanatics got engaged at this waltz disney world museum with plans to wed in the fall. but then coronavirus.

will rapidly warm up over the next couple days as we begin a pretty serious heat wave starting on monday that will last several days across the entire bay area. we'll show you the numbers in one second. live doppler 7 along with satellite showing you we are cloud free and filled with sunshine. the exploratorium camera showing you blue skies, lots of sunshine, and we've already begun that warming trend to start out the holiday weekend. most areas are warmer by 11 degrees in palo alto, 9 in san jose. that will continue. right now it's 57 in half moon bay, 85 in brentwood. 81 in san jose, same in santa rosa and 62 in the city with a bit of a sea breeze kicking in. overnight tonight, we'll keep clear skies, plenty of stars, upper 40s to lower 50s as we get you into your sunday, and sunday will be a warmer afternoon

tomorrow compared to tomorrow. warm inland, 91 concord. 73 in the city tomorrow with a lot of sunshine. 91 in santa rosa. and 92 in fairfield. but it gets excessively hot starting on monday. future tracker temperatures will show you on monday afternoon, memorial day itself, watch as those numbers quickly rise, nearing 100 degrees in a lot of our hottest spots inland, even around the bay shore line. we're in the upper 70s if not upper 80s, and it gets even hotter by tuesday. tuesday is just going to be a hot day, no matter where you live, even in the city, we're going well into the 80s. look at oakland, low 90s near 100 in san jose and triple digit heat in the hottest spots away from the coast and we'll do it all again on wednesday. so, it is for that fact, we have an excessive heat watch going into effect for much of the bay area, starting monday morning at

disney's wide world of sports in orlando seems to be gaining more traction by the day on sports, potentially returning there. thaticallies major league soccer, there's rumors of that. and now the nba could be coming to orlando. according to an espn report, the league has entered explore torrey conversations with disney about restarting the season at the complex in orlando in late july. still unclear if they would try to play some games or jump straight into the playoffs. the nba suspended on march 11. disney pt c 7. former stanford star, christian mccaffrey is ready. check out this catch from the panthers star running back.
