investigators are looking into what caused a fire to break out in the heart of san francisco's fishing and tourism industries. it's memorial day weekend. and bay area residents came out of shelter in place to enjoy the warm weather. this is just one of many hate-filled letters found in an east bay neighborhood. i'm dion lim in san leandro with who made these racist notes. >> abc 7 news starts right now. >> announcer: building a better bay area for a safe and secure future. this is abc 7 news. tonight firefighters are still investigating that fire at san francisco's fisherman's wharf. the process and the damage are leaving many business owners in the area nervous about the impact on their bottom line. good evening. thanks for joining us. i'm eric thomas. the fire destroyed one warehouse and narrowly missed burning a historic ship. abc 7 news reporter lauren martinez is live in the newsroom with more on this.

lauren? >> reporter: eric, the historic pier is critically important to the fishing industry and to tourism in the bay area. these industries are already trying to get by because of the pandemic and now this. >> everyone want to back out? this thing's really taking off. >> reporter: in the heart of san francisco's fishing industry, pier 45 at fisherman's wharf was engulfed in intense flames. >> we'll be going defensive on this fire. >> reporter: 150 firefighters battled the fire from the ground and the water. one of them taken to the hospital with severe cuts. the fire was reported around 4:40 and took nearly eight hours to contai fishermen.rts we're adhe was nooss of life. >> reporter: the pier, built in 1926 i splstruures. one was dtroyed. it houses museum space, office space, and storage units for fishermen and seafood companies. >> this is a lost day of business, a lost good day of business. it means a lot of restaurants and a lot of our home delivery

customers aren't going to be able to do what they were planning on doing for the memorial day picnics or barbecues or whatever. >> reporter: a crucial day of selling was lost and expensive equipment. >> i lost probably $15,000 worth of fishing equipment, maybe two trucks. and it looks like one or two more might be damaged. >> reporter: the fire destroyed corporate office space for red and white fleet, a family-owned tour boat company since 1892. >> it sort of feels like the triple whammy. >> reporter: they ceased operating their boats on march orr from cod.e shelter in place we unfortunately ended up having let go of the staff shor. and now this. we'll get through this. what we really need frankly is to get back out on the bay, get people back out on the bay again. >> reporter: part of the pier is used for commercial flishing. where fishermen sell their catch to fish processors. but as the investigation into

the structural integrity of the pier continues, those fishermen have to wait. >> any vessels that are out there typically are equipped with ice to keep them for at least a couple of days. we want to work with the fishermen and we want to work with everyone in the area to bring the area back, but in order to do so we need to do it safely. >> firefighters will remain at the scene overnight. the cause of the fire is still unknown, and the integrity of the pier is still up in the air. eric, back to you. >> lauren, thank you very much. now, firefighters managed to save an important piece of history from the fire. the "ss jeremiah o'brien," a world war ii navy cargo ship was docked a few feet away from the fire. using the fire boat st. francis crews managed to hold off the fire this memorial day weekend, and the ship's captain is beyonr >> it sounds corny at times but that was the first reaction. it's a miracle. and it's because of the fire department. >> here's a little more background on pier 45. not one but two world war ii naval vessels are docked there,

better bay area. abc 7 news recorder luz pena spoke to a ucsf infectious disease doctor who suggests sunlight might not only be good for your health but make it harder for the coronavirus to spread. luz? >> reporter: it's not officially summertime yet but today's weather gave us a hint with the upcoming heat wave the bay area is set to experience. inland temperatures hitting 100 degrees by tuesday. >> if the virus doesn't kill me at this point the boredom is going to kill me. >> reporter: and many share the same sentiment as danville resident lisa who came out of shelter in place to hike in lafayette. >> more and more people are coming out and enjoying nature and also keep the social distance. >> reporter: in san francisco's dolores park these circles were painted to help crowds practice social distancing. according to research, sunlight might not only be good for mental health and exercise but also to kill the virus. >> in the lab, the uv rays in

sunlight can kill the virus. also the heat kills the virus. but again, if you're on waikiki beach and everyone has covid-19, it doesn't matter how hot it is. >> reporter: ucsf's dr. hung said we're still not out of the woods and need to practice social distancing. >> when you're outdoors with a lot of wind and various elements of outdoors that make it very -- harder for the virus to make a direct path. >> reporter: meanwhile, many are searching for ways to cool off in the mstf this but here'sthin r t covid-19 libraries turned into cooling centers. and malls became shopping and ac destinations. but now they're all closed. san francisco's department of emergency suggests to stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities, but many would rather be somewhere else.

>> towards the beach. >> missing the warriors game. >> going to church. we miss church. >> reporter: and i get it. but we're all getting used to this new reality. in san francisco, luz pena, abc 7 news. sonoma county wineries, breweries, and restaurants are opening back up to outdoor drinkers and diners. sonoma has now been approved by the department of health along with napa and solano counties for the expanded opening. only outdoor dining is allowed under the amended shelter in place order and only one household per table. both kendall jackson winery and le cremo are two of the esablishments that will be opening tomorrow. le cremo is reopening its walking vin yard tour and kendall jackson winery is offering a four-course meal with wine pairings. >> we do our wine and food on our back patio, and long before all this happened we already had tables nice and separate because we want people to enjoy with each other but you want to feel like you're doing your wine and food pairing just with your party. >> the county's covid-19 cases

have remained consistently low. russian river brewing company is also opening back up according to a post on facebook. the windsor brewery is offering takeout and beer all weekend through monday. the beer garden will remain closed until indoor dining is allowed, but the temporary patio out front is open. their pub in santa rosa is also open for takeout daily. all right. we were talking about it's going to be hot in the middle of the week. just how hot? meteorologist drew tuma joins us with a check on the weather. >> yeah, eric, we are tracking a pretty intense heat wave coming our way that will last several days. in fact, we'll find that warmer weather beginning to move in here starthd tomorrow afternoon. tonight, though, we'll take a live picture outside the exploratorium camera showing you clear skies. temperatures this evening, it's on the mild side. we're in the 50s and in the 60s. with temperatures really ramping up starting on monday. we'll have an excessive heat watch starting on monday and it will last four days through

thursday afternoon for excessive heat during the day and pretty warm nights on the way. we'll look at the numbers, how hot we'll get in the acuwaerthd forecast in just a few minutes. >> all right, drew, thanks for the warning. an east bay community is on edge tonight after a string of racist letters were found on homes and posted in public. abc 7 news anchor dion lim brings us an exclusive interview only on abc 7 with video that helped police catch, then release the person who did it. >> you have until the day may 2rd, 2020, saturday 10:30 a.m. to leave this country. no asian allowed. >> reporter: this is just one of several hate-filled letters found by residents in the heron bay neighborhood of san leandro. one of them was found on this tree, another found by trihn's brother friday evening. >> it was really shocking. and the whole family was really shaken up by it. i can't comprehend the hatefulness. reading this letter sends chills down my spine. >> reporter: san leandro police say there were at least five

letters posted on homes or other locations by this woman, nancy arechiga. the letters suggest those not native to america leave the country immediately. the letters also target women and children. >> obviously there's been a spike in attacks toward the asian community due to this pandemic. it's sad to say that. at the end of the day we have to really be strong, resilient and speak whup we see something. >> reporter: police arrested arechiga for inappropriate posts toward minorities but released her from jail because of the current state bail schedule, something that does not sit well with trihn, who has always considered her neighborhood a quiet and safe place. >> it just tells me that they don't take hate crimes seriously. >> reporter: while trihn knows speak out like this can be scary it's why she's choosing to use only her first name. san leandro police tell me speaking out is why they've added more patrols in the area. trihn has this message for y ow,re a stron rward.

this is a look at the front page of tomorrow's "new york times" as we approach 100,000 coronavirus deaths in the u.s. the front page alone is just 1,000 names, 1% of all the deaths. the first name on the list is patricia dowd, the san jose woman who died the first week of february, the first known covid-19 death in the u.s. the list continues on multiple pages inside the paper. and it's not just names. each person's age, city, and a small fact about them is included. the "times" writes of the people lisd, "none were mere numbers." in-person religious ceremonies will remain off limits in california following a federal appeals court ruling. a divided court refused late yesterday to force governor gavin newsom to open places of worship. newsom has been meeting with

live doppler 7 along with satellite tonight. it's a really quiet night out there. we have calm conditions, light breeze, and temperatures are on the mild side for this time of the night. we still have cities stuck in the 60s if not low 70s. it's still 71 right now in brentwood. 65 in vallejo. little bit of a sea breeze influence keeping san francisco at about 55 this evening. 58 in san jose. and napa checking in a little warmer than that at 62 degrees. overnight tonight those numbers will gradually fall back into the 50s under clear skies. you can see we kind of level out on either side of about 15 r 50 degrees for our starting temperatures on our sunday. sunday afternoon will be a warmer afternoon compared to today. we find those hot temperatures inland going back into the low 90s like livermore and concord at 91 degrees. about 79 for a ney oak loond. it will be warm in the east bay tomorrow. 87 for san jose. mild afternoon at 73 degrees. and we are warm in the north bay at 91 degrees in santa rosa.

however, we'll add about 10 or 15 degrees onto these numbers as we head into memorial day itself on monday. in fact, future tracker temperatures, watch those numbers just really rise. we'll likely hit 100 degrees in our warmest spots for the holiday on monday. even around the bayshore line. it is very warm if not downright hot, in the mid 80s to mid 90s. and we get even hotter than that on tuesday. in fact, temperatures on tuesday are well above average for this time of the year. our hottest spots certainly exceeding 100 degrees. likely 104 in our hottest spots like napa. even oakland will be sizzling in the low 90s. san jose, the south bay hitting very close to 100 degrees. even in the city on tuesday we're in the mid if not upper 80s. and we'll do it again on wednesday. little in the way of relief from the heat on wednesday as well as this heat wave rolls on. so it's for that fact. we have that excessive heat watch going into effect starting monday and lasting through

thursday afternoon. so it's really important that heat illness is going to be very high with this heat wave. know the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke. with heat exhaustion your skin is pale, you're sweaty, you're nauseous, you're dizzy. you want to seek ac as quickly as you can and drink some cool water. heatstroke is more serious. that's when your body stops sweating and you have a high body temperature. you want to call 911 for that because that is a very serious emergency that is happening. the accuweather seven-day forecast, it's sunny and warm on sunday. the heat wave really begins here on memorial day on monday. and then you can see eric just a series of very hot days across the entire bay area. tuesday, wednesday, thursday. before relief hits us on friday. refreshing air. saturday chance of a shower with a front moving through and temperatures below average in the 60s and 70s. >> all right, drew, thanks. still ahead on abc 7 news at 11:00, bigfoot appears to be quarantining in a santa cruz county home up for sale.

and released after allegedly posting a string of racist letters on homes and in public in the heron bay neighborhood of san leandro. police say nancy arechiga threatened minorities. one part of the letter read "no asians allowed." she was arrested for inappropriate posts toward minorities but released because of the current state bail schedule. the warm weather pushed many bay area residents out of their shelter in place. today's temperatures gave us a sneak peek of what we could expect in the upcoming heat wave. doctors say that even though we're in phase 2 of reopening the pandemic is not over and social distancing is still important. memorial day weekend is often the unofficial kickoff to the summer season, but this year the beaches look a little different. meantime the president is calling on places of worship to reopen. abc news reporter karina mitchell has the details. >> reporter: after months of stay-at-home orders many americans are anxious to get outside and enjoy the memorial day weekend. states have been rolling back restrictions on beaches, parks,

and golf courses. in california while some businesses have been allowed to reopen with modifications, gyms, salons, entertainment venues and hotels have not. along the santa monica beach many visitors chose to not practice social distancing saturday. president trump was golfing today for the first time in two months but without a mask has called for states to allow places of worship to reopen. this video from the boston archdiocese shows what services could look like. minnesota will allow places of worship to resume at 25% starting wednesday. the announcement coming even as some hospitals in the twin cities are nearing capacity. arkansas, which is how seeing a second peek, is one of eight states with an increase in cases. >> increased cases indicates that there's more arkansans that are out there than we knew about before that are positive and could potentially spread the virus. >> reporter: but some former hot spots are seeing positive trends. new orleans hasn't registered any new deaths since wednesday.

county town of lincoln. more than 90 seniors and their families organized the photo shoot just like previous classes had done. but the pre-2020 grads at lincoln high didn't have to worry about a pandemic. and as you can see, the maskless members of the class of 2020 disregarded social distancing. >> great that the community was coming together to see how they could sbrat us. >> people should be at home social distancing. so this thing doesn't keep going around. >> placer county's health officer called the picture quote a recipe for virus transmission and despite that warning lincoln high's class of 2020 plans to gather for another photo shoot. a photo showing the dangers of hand sanitizer in a hot car is sparking controversy. the photo was posted by the western lakes fire district in wisconsin thursday morning and racked up thousands of shares. but dozens of facebook users question the authenticity, pointing out the spanish written in the background. turns out the photo was originally taken in brazil but the fire department says it doesn't change a thing.

heard of the name cici yen, but chances are you've been to one of his restaurants. the vacaville resident runs a fast food empire with 30 mcdonald's branches in northern california, 16 in solano county. now in addition to happy meals he's serving up ppe. >> we have benefit so much as first generation immigrants. and this is a time to give back. >> reporter: and the help is enormous. millions of surgical masks, goggles, gowns, face shields, hand sanitizers. a gift from yin's non-profit to workers everywhere. vacaville, fairfield, sacramento, even seattle and new york. >> the firemen, the police. and because mcdonald's we working with them in the past we continue to do that. >> reporter: the 83-year-old entrepreneur says his desire to give back stems from his gratitude for the opportunities that america has given him.

born in china, he fled to taiwan during world war ii and immigrated to the u.s. in the '60s with $100 in his pocket. yin worked as an engineer until getting laid off at age 48. that's when he stumbled upon the chance to buy a failing mcdonald's in oakland. >> mcdonald's warned me because i was not qualified, wasn't good at speaking english. i said mcdonald's, you cannot judge the immigrant. the guy might be good for you. >> reporter: turns out he was good. a year later yin turned that branch profitable for the first time. and more mcdonald's followed. the entrepreneur says the key to success was and still is working with local organizations and supporting the community. last year when yin's vallejo branch had a grand reopening he donated to the local humane society. >> he's provided employment for our local youth, scholarships through his foundation for college-bound seniors, and he has just been nothing but generous to our community.

in times of need. ed. >> reporter: the community is often invited to yin's thriving ranch in vacaville. it's his home but it's also a conference center, wedding venue, and amusement park, complete with a mcdonald's racetrack. here yin often hosts events for his non-partisan apapa organization, asian pacific islander american public affairs. with 30 chapters across the country, its mission is to increase asian-american civil engagement and political leadership. >> for being those leaders in our community and giving folks like me the opportunity to network, to be educated, and to grow as leaders. >> reporter: yin says developing community-minded leaders is now more important than ever. to the next generation the man who realized his american dream through the golden arches offers up his golden rule. >> america taught me how to give back, how to work with the
