virus is not yet contained. he's calling on everyone to protect themselves and their community. abc's andrea fujii has more. >> reporter: this morning new images of crowds coming out in droves for the holiday weekend, and many people not following social distancing guidelines. in southern california a popular hiking trail forced to close after large crowds showed up. in ocean city, maryland, thousands flocked to the boardwalk, some unmasked. >> it's really crowded. it's beautiful out. you know, it's fun. everybody's having fun. >> reporter: at the jersey shore rough surf and clouds made for an unappealing beach day, but on the boardwalk sunday night business owners said it felt like a holiday, especially as far as crowds go. >> it's insane on how many people are out here today. i didn't expect this at all. we were thinking, ah, because we went to atlantic city and it was, like, dead city, nobody out. we came over here, we were like, wow. >> reporter: this pool party in missouri's lake of the ozarks

packed to the brim. aerial images from florida showing people swarming daytona beach. >> there's two people out the sun roof throwing money. >> reporter: police referring to the scene as a gauntlet. >> this type of behavior is unacceptable. we don't want people coming to our city disrupting our city. >> reporter: and outside this water park long lines of people crammed together waiting to get in. >> right now i'm absolutely frightened, like frightened. as you can see, nobody is social distancing. >> reporter: many churches also reopened their doors on sunday. in alabama upper room baptist church held their first service in eight weeks. kofsh congregates sitting apart. >> i talked with my deacons and they agreed that they felt like we could do this safely and that it was good and the right thing to do. >> reporter: in new hampshire, the diocese of manchester held communion in some churches. parishioners socially distanced

and priests sanitized their hands after serving each person. but reopening and relaxing restrictions runs the risk of new infections. at least eight states seeing an increase in new reported cases. in santa cruz county, california, mother's day celebrations may have contributed to a 20% spike in cases there. and in arkansas authorities say a high school pool party led to a second spike in the state. in missouri health officials say a pair of hair stylists returned to work with covid symptoms and have now tested positive, potentially exposing more than 140 customers to the virus. >> i'm going to be honest with you. we can't have many more of these. >> reporter: and this morning with new cases declining in new york, governor andrew cuomo announced professional sports can begin spring training and major sports teams can reopen without fans. las vegas casinos set to reopen june 4th, but it won't be business as usual. casinos will be disinfecting dice and retooling card games and slot machines to promote social distancing. >> whether it's in the hotel, the gaming floor, food and

beverage, and they're going to see a lot of hand sanitizer. >> reporter: and unforgettable end to this unprecedented school yea gallatin county high school's class of 2020 got to take their own cars for a few laps at kentucky speedway. most of the country has seen a dramatic decline in cases, but there has been an uptick in some areas. dr. deborah birx from the white house coronavirus task force says that may be due to increased testing in high-risk places like nursing homes. trevor and mona? >> andrea, thank you for that report. and despite more testing, half of the nation's states won't meet the white house goal of testing all nursing home residents and workers by today. that's according to a review by the associated press. some aren't even trying to meet the deadline. others cite costs and lack of resources for the failure. about 1/3 of all coronavirus deaths were in nursing homes. president trump is barring travel into the united states

from brazil, one of the hardest hit countries in the pandemic. the ban takes effect thursday. it does not apply to american citizens or permanent residents. abc's ines de la cuetara has more. p strel er: overnight president restrictions on brazil. more cases of covid-19 are surging. according to data from john hopkins university, brazil has more than 363,000 cases, ranking second for most cases worldwide, only behind the united states, now surpassing 1.6 million. the white house saying in a statement they are suspending the entry of aliens who have been in brazil during the 14-day period before seeking admittance to the united states. before the announcement sunday night, national security adviser robert o'brien hinting that the restrictions were coming. >> we hope that will be temporary, but because of the situation in brazil, we're going to take every step necessary to protect the american people. we'll take a look at the other countries on a country by country basis. >> reporter: cases of coronavirus are surging across latin america, including mexico. abc's ian pannell is in mexico city. >> latin america is now the new

global epicenter of this pandemic. here in mexico, we're seeing record numbers of cases. in fact, we've just seen the highest number of deaths being reported, but some controversy over that tally with some suggestions by an independent research group that the real number could be as many as three times higher. as in many other cases, we're seeing hospitals and morgues nearing capacity. >> reporter: in the meantime, president trump hitting the golf course both saturday and sunday over the holiday weekend repeating his mantra "america must reopen." >> we did the right thing and now we're doing the right thing by getting it going, getting it open. we have to open. >> and president trump will participate in a number of memorial day ceremonies today including a wreath laying ceremony at arlington national cemetery and another at fort mchenry in baltimore. trevor and mona? >> thank you, ines. and also breaking overnight, several republican groups are suing california's governor over his voting by mail order. governor gavin newsom signed the

order earlier this month because of the coronavirus pandemic, but a new lawsuit claims it's an illegal power grab and will lead to voter fraud. president trump has frequently spoken out against the expansion of mail-in voting. well, skiers can finally hit the slopes in colorado. the arapahoe basin ski area will reopen this week but with restrictions. skiers will need reservations and most of them will go to pass holders and they'll need to wear masks in certain areas and no tailgating is allowed. this will be the first colorado resort to reopen. time now for a look at your weather for this memorial day. residents in seven states today will continue cleaning up after the weekend's tornados. a majority were in iowa like this one, illinois and wisconsin. an especially severe storm system stretches from southern

fire along san francisco's fisherman's wharf. the vessel took part in the d-day raid on normandy. it was saved by a san francisco fire boat. one firefighter was hurt. breaking overnight, an urgent manhunt is under way for a connecticut murder suspect considered armed and extremely dangerous. the hunt for peter manfredonia started friday night. authorities say the 23-year-old university of connecticut senior is suspected of killing two people and stealing guns and cars in a three-day rampage. he was last seen in stroudsburg, pennsylvania. it is unknown how he got across state lines. authorities say anyone spotting him should immediately call 911. a test of a new satellite launching system has been pushed back to today. a censor glitch delayed yesterday's test by richard branson's virgin orbit company. the plan is to launch a rocket from the underside of a boeing 747 at 35,000 feet. virgin orbit said that would allow satellite placement from almost anywhere.

they're being forced to ditch the great outdoors and turn to their computer screens instead. the boy scouts of america is among the first to retool its program. troops across the country are taking part in an online scout fest. other camps are scrambling to follow suit. >> there's so much about camp that is irreplaceable that virtually we'll never be able to do, but i think camps will do everything they can to keep their kids connected and feeling like they're a part of their community. >> more than 20 million kids attend camp every summer. experts say in addition to the fun and physical activities, it's also about mental stimulation. moving back to those holiday weekend crowds from coast to coast, earlier i spoke with dr. imran ali. i asked him about the nursing home testing goal that is going to go unmet for many states. we started with those large crowds over the weekend. >> dr. ali, we appreciate you making time for us. we know something as this

pandemic develops that we don't see the results in real time as a result of our actions. there is a little bit of a delay. with we know there's been an uptick in gathers for mother's day. people weren't throwing huge pool parties for mother's day. with these huge crowds we're seeing in places across the country, what kind of fallout can we expect from these memorial day gatherings? >> well, trevor, i'm really worried. i'm seeing that some people are beginning to let their guard down. and i know that it's the holiday and people want to get out and spend time with friends and family. we have to be careful because we may see new infections on around june 8th if today, on memorial day, we don't really keep, you know, that social distancing. it's really important that we not let our guard down. >> we know about two weeks ago the white house urged governors to test every single nursing home employee and resident within 14 days. now almost half the states have failed to meet that goal. they say the cost, the manpower is just too much to get it done. how important do you think it is for nursing home staff and residents to be tested? is it logistically even possible

to get everybody tested? >> it's just not possible to test that many people, approximately 50,000 or more. there's not enough manpower, and also, trevor, it's a moving target because you see these nurses' aids who work in the nursing home. they work at several different facilities. so if they get tested on one day, they may get exposed the second day. we don't have the infrastructure or the manpower to test people every single day. >> on "this week" yesterday, dr. birx said it's difficult to tell if there's going to be a second wave of this virus. this first wave has already been so tough for everybody. what scares you the most about this possible second wave? >> well, i mean, i've been looking at the studies out there and the projections, and it really is hard to tell if there will be a second wave. with sars and mers, there was no second wave, but this is a different virus because it's highly virulent. now, what really bothers me or worries me is that influenza
