and the first day of four days. starts 11:00 this morning and goes through 7:00 thurz and the areas in orange and red where we're most susceptible to heat illness and along the coast and right around the bay shoreline immediately a little bit of a localized breeze that will keep you a little more comfortable than the rest of us and plus spare the air. the areas you see in orange the east bay valleys and santa clara valley. let's talk temperatures as we break down your day planner. 51 to 63 degrees at 7:00. still comfortable and still time to open up the windows and let in fresh air. by the time you get to noon, way too late. 70 there. and 74 at the coast at 4:00 and look at that. 89 to 98 degrees for our bay and inland neighborhoods and still in the 80s at 7:00 on this memorial day. so, yes, air conditioning. if you can find it, good luck. if you're used to going to the mall and movie theater, reggie, not so much.

>> that is going to be a tough one for those folkses. all right, mike. thank you. tenants of san francisco's pier 45 can begin their cleanup operations. this comes two days after a fire that destroyed a warehouse at the historic pier on saturday morning. abc7 news reporter lauren martinez joins us live with more information. hi, lauren. >> hi, reggie. the port of san francisco and the fire department are working closely together to inspect and make sure the structures at the pier are safe for tenants to return. we know the pier has four structures. one was destroyed on saturday morning. on sunday we learned the ss jer maya unique world war ii artifacts stored in the warehouse was lost. the captain says that they used part of the space that burned as storage. >> in a call which is what holds the compass, a lot of brass, some brass items that had been donated from other ships.

>> in a facebook post volunteers with the "ss jer maya" national ship memorial are asking for donations to replace what was launched. "the o'brien" launched in may and 2,700 built during world war ii that remain fully functional. port officials say they'll likely move the ship to a temporary location. the cause of saturday's fire is expected to be next week. reporting live from fisherman's wharf, lauren martinez, abc7 news. >> thank you, lauren. new questions about how long we're going to be feeling the impact of the coronavirus at the grocery store. we've been reporting for weeks now about plant closures around the country and that leads to higher prices for us. jobina has more of that for us at the live desk. hi, jobina. >> hi, reggie. thank you. some of you may have noticed higher prices over this memorial

day. hot dogs and hamburgers that are typically on sale this time of year. the biggest spike in grocery bills that we've seen in 50 years because meat plants have been deemed hot spots for spreading coronavirus. nearly 5,000 workers in 19 state have been sickened leading some plants to close for weeks. the impact has been passed on through higher prices on things like beef and chicken. but the head of one grocery store chain was just on "gma" and says things will get better with the supply chain. >> yeah, the entire american food supply chain has been hustling and working very hard to make sure there is nor availability and we're starting to see that. we're seeing it in the meat departments and our fresh meat cases and really across everything. >> as for how long we may be paying higher prices, experts say it will likely be through the end of the year. they recommend doing more meal planning while you shop so you

can really make your dollar stretch. back over to you. if you thought you had heard it all in 2020 so far, there is another twist. the cdc is now warning that aggressive mice and rats could become a problem because of the coronavirus pandemic. it turns out, according to the agency, so many restaurants are closed that rodents are getting kind of desperate out on these streets. several cities have reported a spike in rodent control calls including new orleans and washington, d.c. experts say you can usually avoid mice and rats in your home by not leaving food or water sitting out. covid-19 testing has expanded to one of san francisco's most vulnerable neighborhoods. a free community testing site abc7 news was there when it opened yesterday. client groups want to get more people, especially the homeless, tested for covid-19. >> this is one of those instances where it's like no one does community like the tenderloin and we've come

together and, you know, including partners that are sometimes on opset side of the same coin and we came to work this as best as we can. >> testing site will reopen thursday may 28th through june 1st. organizers are working with the alphabet-owned health enterprise. high school students in napa county will get their diplomas through virtual walks. graduates will pull up in a car and meet the faculty before driving away. only family members allowed in the cars. the school district says they will schedule the walks and put m feeling that usually ver that comes with aduati th graduation ceremonies for vintage and american canyon and new technology as well as valley oak high schools are set for the first week of june. and this is the first spare the air alert of the year. light winds, high temperatures and vehicle exhaust expected which will make air quality unhealthy. officials say with less traffic, there is still enough exhaust to

allow smog to build up during hot weather. people with respiratory issues should avoid any outdoor activities today and you're also reminded it's illegal to burn wood on days when spare the air alerts is in effect in. we'll check in with meteorologist mike nicco because he has information on what we should expect for the rest of the day. >> i want to ask you a question. were either of you out and about and near a park in san francisco and if so, it's a two part, how was the social distancing? >> kumasi? >> i wasn't, friend, so you tell it. i know you saw some things. >> i was. so many people at dolores park on saturday i just headed there and came back home. and then yesterday we went to a closer park where there weren't as many people. but i have to say, at dolores park, people were using those circles and it seemed like that was really working. kudos to the city on that one. >> all right. all right. good. i'm glad to hear that because probably even more people trying

to get there and some of the smaller parks like you utilize, people can utilize those, too. this whole thing can snowball. just going to be hot and we have to find some way to stay cool. that's the bottom line. temperatures in the upper 50s to low 60s along the east bay shore right now. let's take a look at some other neighborhood. low to mid 50s in the north bay and 63 in san francisco carlos and oakland 62 and 66 in antioch and san jose 64 and little bit warmer spots out there. and trying to stay cool no matter how you're commuting if you have to today. we appreciate you working. it is a spare the air and hopefully air conditioning is working everywhere. let's talk about san francisco and run of mid to upper 70s starting at noon all the way through 4:00. we begin the day at 6:00 and about 66 at 8:00 this evening. for the east bay 66 this morning, also. look at that. already 84 by noon. this is on the upper end of how

hot it will be along the east bay and some people will be maybe two or three degrees cooler like berkeley and richmond than these temperatures here. it gives you an idea. for the north bay. i think this is underdone a little bit. mid to upper 90s is the rule for several hours this afternoon as you make a run at the east bay for our hottest neighborhoods. in fact, 100s are going to be a little more likely the next couple days, also. we'll talk about that coming up next. first, over to jobina and find out how the traffic is going and maybe what she is going to do to stay cool today. >> well, i am blessed to have air conditioning, so, i will be inside enjoying the view of the sunny day today. but for our essential workers out there, things are looking pretty good. we'll start off here with a live look showing you the san mateo bridge. a very smooth ride. we don't expect there to be too much heavy traffic because of the holiday today on top of our shelter-in-place order. these are the most essential of the essential workers headed in.

the space center and aboard a falcon 9 rocket and the first time it will lift off from u.s. soil in more than a decade. republican groups have filed a lawsuit to send mail-in ballots to every voter in california for the november election. newsom announced the mail voting expansion earlier this month in response to covid-19. on twitter, the chair of the republican party said the party, the republican national committee and the national republican congressional committee are part of this new suit. they take specific issue with news newsom's plan to register every ballot and some of whom inactive. in her tweet a recipe for disaster are to create more opportunities for voter fraud. saying the change has to go through the legislature. newsom gave this response on friday. >> we are confident in the effort. we believe it's the right thing.

we also believe it's a nonpartisan issue. public health is a nonpartisan issue. we want to keep people safe. >> in response to the rnc lawsuit, a press secretary for governor newsom said california will continue to defend california's right to vote, including their vote to vote by mail and the right to hold an election at a safe, secure and accessib accessible. voters shouldn't have to choose between their health and right to vote. defining what it means to be effortlessly cool. she barely missed a beat while she was doing an interview on live on tv. >> we having an earthquake here. if you see things moving behind me. >> she just continued with the interview saying she wasn't under any hanging lights and was in a structurally sound building. listen to this, it was a 6.5 magnitude earthquake.

and other churches that feel that same way they have all banned together to put pressure on the governor. about 1,200 pastors and clergy have sent the governor a letter saying they plan to resume in-person services this sunday regardless of state restrictions. president trump said he thinks churches are essential businesses and should be reopened. but the reverend brown and third baptist church in san francisco says he is not ready. >> the black church will not be by any politician when it's scientifically not safe. >> governor newsom has said he is working on safety guidelines for places of worship. the federal appeals court has backed governor newsom's stay-at-home order. that ruling came out on friday saying it supports the governor's stance. an announcement from the governor on when in-person

services can resume is expected today. live in livermore, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> all right, thank you, amy. happening today, a group of black, religious leaders plans to call for a delay in reopening services. they want to continue virtual worship services until they can guarantee their congregations are safe from coronavirus. the inner faith council is organizing a rally and call for more medical and educational service to help black people who are disproportionately affected by the virus. today is memorial day and there are changes to some events in light of the pandemic. the california international guard will perform two flyovers between 11:30 and 3:00 this afternoon to honor bay area health care workers and a socially distanced drive-by tribute to fallen service members in antioch at the antioch marina which stops at the veteran memorial and oak view cemetery. in marin the annual memorial day

governor andrew cuomo announced professional sports teams can return to their facilities for training. leagues are continuing discussions with their players' uni unions. kumasi. >> thanks, jobina. our efforts to build a better bay area are focused on four key aspects of reopening, health, education, workplace and the economy. phase two of reopening their economies and santa clara became the last county to move into phase two and now as you can see on this map, the entire bay area is green. outdoor dining resumed in parts of the north bay over the weekend. cornell bernard has a look at how businesses in sonoma county are doing. >> it's all brand-new. we're all learning kind of together. bare with us. >> reporter: kendall jackson winery taking lots of reservations for wine tasting reimagined. it reopened sunday and employees back at work with new guidelines and lots of disinfecting. >> we spaced tables ten feet

weird to be back. >> it is a little stressful. we want to be respectful of the workers and other patrons. so, it's good to be out, though. >> reporter: owner charles bell says luckily this weekend has been busy, but it's been a struggle. >> after two months, normally memorial day would be packed. i am grateful to have whatever i have right now. >> they were fully booked today. a reservation-only basis for now. 50 parties per day is all they're allowing spaced out throughout the day and they hope to increase that number in the future as long as it's safe. cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> if you're wondering what is open and what is not in your county, here is the breakdown. we'll start in the north bay. sonoma county has moved deeper into phase two and this allows for dine-in re raunts and napa and sonoma county restaurants opened back up in.

restaurants are open for takeout and delivery. beaches are open in san mateo county but parking lots are closed. in san francisco, contra costa and marin retail stores open for pick-up only and parks and beaches are open in san francisco but beach parking lots are closed and marin county beaches are closed. uc san diego ramping up its program in hopes of having classes on campus in the fall. started with 100 tests per day for students, faculty and staff. according to "the chronicle" th we. and hope to increase it to 400 per day this week. if all goes as planned, uc san diego plans to expand to 1,500 daily tests in the fall at which point they will allow in-person testing and activities. you can check out all of our coverage and also send an alert and stream live any

bay shore and some mid to upper 60s in the south bay. if you are an essential worker and you are commuting today, here's a look at the bay bridge toll plaza and all about trying to stay comfortable hopefully with less people on mass transit they will keep those cool and the air conditioners will be able to keep up. here's a look at the peninsula. we go from comfortable to hot. we're still talking about temperatures in the upper 80s and 75 at 8:00. by noon we're at 86. low, i think mid 90s for several hours this afternoon and 80 at 8:00 and here the hottest temperatures today. east bay valleys. already near 90 at noon. mid to upper 90s from at least 1:00 through 7:00. many of us will be hitting 100. and then still 86 at 8:00. want to bring jobina in and talk about the essential workers and she also asked me what is on the
