temperatures. kumasi, you wanted it to be hot. >> i did. i got it. i also have two friends on this screen that might have pools. we won't say any names. or at least one. at least one. so, i've been blessed. >> wait, jobina, that pool is not open, is it? >> my pool is not open because of this whole situation, but hopefully soon and then, of course, everyone is invited. >> no pressure. we're coming over. >> come on over. there's plenty of room at my house. we can social distance and i'll have the air conditioner. i already turned it on yesterday. so, got the windows open right now trying to get in some of that fresh, clean, cool air. because later on today, the air is going to be hot and be unhealthy and here is a look at some of those areas where the spare the air is in effect. and it's mainly the east bay valleys and the south bay. that's where we expect the worst

air quality this afternoon. now, look at the heat away from the bay shore and the coast. we're going to hit the 90s and triple digits. not only today starting at 11:00 but all the way through thursday. we have four days of dangerous heat. now, that is a heat advisory in the orange. even hotter in solano county. temperatures triple digits today and for the next four days for sure. that's why you're under an excessive heat warning. fairfield 100, antioch, 100. look at the rest of the upper 90s and mid 90s in the south bay and low to mid 90s in the north bay and low 80s around the bay and even an 80 in san francisco today. we'll talk more about this heat coming up next. >> mike, thank you. as mike mentioned, today is the first spare the air day of the year. light winds, high temperatures and vehicle exhaust all combine and that makes the air quality unhealthy. officials say even with less traffic right now, there is still enough exhaust to allow smog to build up during hot weather. people with respiratory issues

should avoid any outdoor activities today. and happening today, tenants of san francisco's pier 45 will be allowed back there to clean up their operations. this comes two days after a fire destroyed a warehouse at that historic pier on saturday morning. lauren martinez joins us from fisherman wharf. >> the port of san francisco began inspections of all the structures at pier 45. the fire department is also making sure it is safe for tenants to return. this pier houses museum space and storage units. the portion that burned on saturday morning houses office space and storage units for fishermen and seafood companies. we received new video that shows thousands of dollars of crab pots being destroyed and one $75,00ther t table the fire could be, quote, disastrous

for the local fishing community. >> that pier supports the entire san francisco fleet. there is not a way to unload boats from between half moon bay and bodega bay. this pier is critical for the local fishing community. >> while the fire department was able to save the historic ss jeremiah o'brien some world war ii artifacts were lost in the fire and volunteers with the ss jeremiah o'brien ship memorial are asking for donations from the public. donations can be made online. we have a link on abc7news.com. port officials say they will most likely move the ship to a temporary location as the investigation into the cause continues. reporting live from fisherman's wharf, lauren martinez. >> thank you. walk-up covid-19 testing has extended to one of san francisco's most vulnerable neighborhoods. a free community testing site

items like hamburgers and hot dogs are ntar but not this year. the biggest spike in 50 years because meat plants have been deemed hot spots for spreading coronavirus. nearly 5,000 workers in 19 states have been sickened leading to some plants closing for several weeks. the impact has been passed on through higher prices on things like beef and chicken. but the head of one grocery store chain was on "gma" this morning and said things will get better with the supply chain. >> the entire american food supply chain has been hustling and irk withing very hard to make sure there is nor availability and we're starting to see that. we're seeing it on the side counters and the meat department and fresh meat cases and really across everything. >> as for how long we may be paying higher prices, experts say it will likely be through the end of the year. they recommend doing some meal planning so you don't have to buy as much as you might think you do and really stretch that

dollar. reggie? >> okay, jobina, thank you. if you thought we had seen it all in 2020 so far, think again. this year has another weird twist. so, the cdc is saying that mice and rats may start to be coming out more often because they're desperate right now. the agency says so many restaurants are closed so rodents are having to find food scraps and go farther to find them. several cities have reported a spike in rodent control calls including new orleans and washington, d.c. you can avoid mice and rats in your home by not leaving food or water sitting out. so, there's that to worry about. >> you did say the animals were taking over. i don't know if this is what you quite meant. >> this is part of the process, i think. >> i don't like that part. all right, so, back-to-back appearances. the president's plan for memorial day today. a unique celebration for grads in napa county. the students and their families will have a special way to mark

>>t,hankoubi.g today, predento t arlington national cemetery to commemorate memorial day. after that, the president along with the first lady will head to baltimore to speak at ft. mchenry national monument. that's where the "star spangled banner" was written. some high school students in napa county getting a virtual walk for their graduation. grads will be able to pull up in a car, collect their diploma and meet with faculty before they drive away. only family members allowed in the cars. the school district will schedule the walks and put together the videos to deliver the feel that comes with a graduation. the graduation ceremonyor vintage, american canyon and valley oaks high school are set for the first week of june. >> appreciate that effort. well, republicans are not happy with the governor's plan

or, here's my bank. because if you download and use the chase mobile app, your bank is virtually any place. so visit chase.com/mobile. republican groups have filed a lawsuit over governor newsom's executive order to send mail-in ballots to every voter in california. the voting expansion earlier this month in response to covid-19. on twitter, the chair of the republican party said that the party, the republican national committee and the national republican congressional committee are part of this new suit. they take specific issue for the governor's plan to mail every registered voter a ballot. some of whom may be inactive. rhonda mcdaniel called it a recipe for disaster that would create more opportunities for voter fraud. now, a different conservative group has already filed a similar lawsuit saying the change has to go through the legislature and here is the

governor's response to that lawsuit. >> we are confident in the effort. we believe it's the right thing. we also believe it's a nonpartisan issue. public health is a nonpartisan issue. we want to keep people safe. >> in response to the rnc lawsuit, a press secretary for governor newsom said california will continue to defend california's right to vote, including their right to vote by mail and the right to hold an election that is safe, secure and accessible. voters shouldn't have to choose between their health and their right to vote. a push to help more animals get rescued in san francisco is now stirring up a debate. according to the examiner, advocates are calling on the city's animal care and control shelter to give the public two days notice before it plans to -ditch effort to wer, theaccs would really improve outcomes. the director also says it will

there you go. so, we've got high pressure over top of us or not. this area of low pressure, bye, bud. moving up and bringing us the sea breeze by friday. dangerous temperatures. mid to upper 90s in the south bay and 83 in millbrae and 87 in san mateo and everybody else in the 90s on the peninsula. mid 70s along the peninsula coast and downtown san francisco and sausalito. upper 60s a little breezy along the north bay coast and low to upper 90s along the north bay. 85 to 91 is your spread along the east bay shore and 98 to 100 in our east bay valleys. 50s and 60s where most of us live. if you're in higher elevations, 70s and 80s for lows the next couple mornings and that's what makes it most dangerous. record highs tuesday and wednesday. the heat breaks friday and then all of us are comfy saturday and sunday with a slight chance of showers. all right, guys, back to you. >> all right, mike, thank you.

>> we look forward to churches reopening in a safe and responsible manner. now at 6:30, guidelines from the governor could be coming as soon as today, but some faith leaders in the bay area are split on whether now is the right time to reopen. parts of the u.s. seeing a spike in coronavirus cases. it comes as many people are ignoring social distancing guidelines on this memorial day weekend. here at home, a dangerous heat wave. warm weather is expected to grip the bay area today as we take a live look right now. and it's only expected to get hotter as we head into our new week. good morning, everybody. it is monday. may 25th. and it is also memorial day. a lot happening today. we know a lot of people want to get out, but you do need to be careful because it is going to be hot. >> yes, mike, you're talking about 100 inland and 80 in san francisco. that is something. >> right. and it's not even the hottest day. i think that will be tomorrow and wednesday when some record

high temperatures are possible. so, each and every day, your body is going to become weaker if you work outside and more susceptible to heat illness. something to keep an eye on. right now about 64 on sutro tower and what happened to that beautiful, clean air and the blue sky? it is gone. especially in the east bay valleys and down in the south bay, that is where we have the best chance for unhealthy air this afternoon. everywhere but the bay shore and the coast, the immediate bay shore and the coast. everywhere else under an excessive or a heat advisory and then that excessive heat warning for solano county where it is even hotter with triple digits for four days. the areas in orange 90s and to nearly 100. see mid 80s to low 90s around the bay shore. mid 90s in the south bay and upper 90s in the north bay and upper 90s to near 100 in the east bay. how hot it is going to get coming up. who are we going to go to?

kumasi? we'll hear from governor newsom as soon as today when places of worship can reopen but here in the bay area faith leaders are split whether it is safe. amy hollyfield is live with more. >> there is a divide, kumasi. some churches say they are not ready and some say they are and they can do is safely. many have banned together to put pressure on the governor. more than 1,200 pastors and clergy from across california sent the governor a letter saying they plan to resume in-person services this sunday regardless of state restrictions. amos brown of third baptist church doesn't think it is safe but a pastor in livermore told us he thinks it is time and it can be done safely. >> aisles are six feet apart and told people if they come with their immediate family, they can

sit together. the people they arrive with they can sit together. we ask everybody else to put three chairs between them which would be about seven feet. >> governor newsom has said he is working on safety guidelines for places of worship and an announcement from him on when in-person services can resume is expected today. president trump has called churches essential and says he thinks they should reopen. live in livermore, amy hollyfield, abc7 news. >> all right, thank you, amy. happening today, a group of black religious leaders plans to call for a delay in opening services. they want to continue virtual services until they can guarantee their services can be safe from coronavirus. they're organizing a rally at city hall that starts at noon and call for more medical and educational services to help people disproportionatelylyly

coronavirus. the california international guard will perform two flyovers between 11:30 this morning and 3:00 this afternoon to honor bay area health care workers. there will also be a socially distanced drive-by tribute to fallen service members in antioch. that begins at 11:00 at the antioch marina with stops at the veterans memorial, county fair grounds. in marin the get together at the auditorium will be online instead of in person with a message posted on facebook. as the coronavirus death toll in the u.s. inches closer to 100,000, new concerns about social distancing. we've been looking at pictures and video from across the country over the past couple days of people who are simply ignoring the rules. some states are seeing an increase in cases. jobina is at the live desk tracking that. jobina? >> thank you, reggie. good morning. with all 50 states easing some restrictions, at least eight are seeing a spike in new reported

cases. those states include nevada, arkansas, alabama and also north dakota, north andou carolin and west virginia and maine. crowds came out over the weekend but membany did not fol social distancing guidelines or wear masks. >> it's really crowded. it's beautiful out. you know, it's fun. everybody's having fun. >> insane on how many people are out here today. i didn't expect this at all. >> and the state of new york, governor andrew cuomo announced professional sports teams can return to their facilities for training. leagues are continuing discussions with their players' unions. kumasi. >> thanks, jobina. abc7 is committed to building a better bay area and focusing on four key aspects of reopening. health, education, the changing workplace and the economy. all bay area counties are now in phase two of their reopening process for the economy. on friday, santa clara became the last county to reopen, but some counties are actually

further along than others. in parts of the north bay, outdoor dining resumed over the weekend. kendall jackson winery in sonoma county started taking they're spaced ten feet apart. the staff they have on gloves. similar measures are also in place at the wurst restaurant. the owner there said it has been a struggle, though. >> two months and normally memorial day it will be packed. i'm grateful to have whatever i have right now. >> russian river brewing company in windsor is also back open serving food and beer on the front patio or to go. if you're wondering what is open or not in your county. here's the break down. sonoma county has moved deeper into phase two and this allows for dine-in restaurants and shopping centers to reopen. napa and solano counties are also deep into phase two. in san mateo, santa clara and alameda, retail stores areside.

mateo county but the parking lots are closed. in san francisco, contra costa and marin and restaurant and retail stores are open for pickup only. the beach parking lots are closed and in marin county, the beaches are closed. uc san diego ramping up its coronavirus testing it and they are trying to make it safer to go back to school in the fall. started with 100 tests per day for students, faculty and staff. according to "san francisco chronicle" officials doubled that total last week and they hope to increase it to 400 per day this week. if all goes as planned, uc san diego plans to expend to 1,500 daily tests in the fall at which point they will allow in-person classes and activities. as unemployment continues to rise, renters are asking for the eviction moratorium to be extended. it expires sunday.

are still closed and businesses that sell home pools say families are looking for something to entertain their kids, especially with summer coming up. a lot of companies are reporting a surge and they say they may have to hire workers to keep up with all of this demand. but, if you are looking to buy, sellers say just be prepared for a bit of a wait. the pandemic is driving up the cost of memorial day cookouts. covid-19 outbreaks have shut down some meat processing plants and the supplies of beef, pork and chicken are kind of limited. nielson data shows the price of fresh meat was up more than 8%. more macy's stores are reopening across the country over this long holiday weekend. macy's says most of its doors will be open by late june. the company is forecasting a loss of more than $1 billion for the quarter. as gyms remain closed during the pandemic, maybe you noticed the bike shops in your neighborhood have had huge lines and the one in mine does.
