commemoration at the naval cemetery in vallejo. this is the oldest military cemetery on the west coast. it opened in 1858, nearly 1,000 are interred there, including three medal of honor recipients and veterans from the war of 1812, the civil war and world war i. good afternoon. i'm larry beil. >> and i'm dion lim. while memorial day is about honoring those who died for our country, for many it's also the unofficial start to summer. the heat and holiday sent many people off to beaches and parks across the bay area despite recommendations to stay at home. leeann melendez spoke to people who said they just needed to get out. she joins us live from the roof top of abc 7. a beautiful picture behind you. >> reporter: it's beautiful up here. we often hear people say, i'm so tired of staying at home. i am really tired of hearing about covid-19.

does this make them a bad person? absolutely not. it makes them human. today, humans had the heat, the holiday, and the will. here at stern grove in san francisco, peop gathered as early as 6:30. by late this morning, it was clear people were gathering elsewhere like at ocean beach. this is before noon, and already the beach was getting somewhat crowded. the painted circles were still there, and so were volunteers with the san francisco police department. handing out masks and reminding people to keep their distance. >> be safe. >> reporter: we picked a much calmer mother's meadow in golden gate park to talk to people about what get them out of their homes. >> just trying to find some little sense of normalcy, even in a very different way with a

six-foot pole and distance and mask. >> reporter: this couple came up from woodside, where it was much hotter. >> we thought this would be a nice place to be, and they're pretty much social distancing here, so it seems like a safe place to be. >> reporter: people here remember other memorial day holidays before covid-19. when they were only reminded to never leave pets inside a parked car, and to drink plenty of water on a hot day. now, add social distancing and cover your face. >> i think it gives everybody an indication of what's really important and what things they can enjoy and appreciate. >> reporter: nancy and wallace have found it hard to be away from family. >> they say people are social beings, and that is really true. it's hard not being social. particularly with family. >> reporter: like many of us, people are just trying to make the best of their world, which has been turned upside down.

>> gosh, i wish i could still do that. a reminder, we still have a few more days of this heat, so please don't give in to temptation. try, try to stay home. i'm live in san francisco, lyanne melendez, "abc7 news." >> leeann, my money is still on you being able to roll down that hill with no shame. quick question, though, before you go. was anybody at mission deloris park being cited today, do you know? >> reporter: that's interesting, because we went there, we spent some time there. over the weekend, the supervisor, which covers that area for that district said that he saw the pictures over the weekend and said it looked pretty serious, the situation. today, of course, the volunteers were out there, volunteers with the san francisco police department. they remind people, send gentle

reminders, saying, you know, be careful, mind your distance. they were trying to hand out masks. we did see some san francisco police department officers, some regular police officers, they were not handing out any citations while we were there. but, again, it's 4:00. >> and we will leave it at that. many thanks to you for that report. the heat really rising in the east bay, where people are trying to get out while still abiding by the rules designed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. laura anthony is live from one hot spot, crown beach in alameda. hi, laura. >> reporter: last check, it was in the mid 80s out here. there's a nice breeze. let's show you what's happening here at crown beach.

spencer christian is here with the forecast. hi, spencer. >> okay, larry. happy memorial day to you. we have had temperatures up to 100 degrees in a couple of spots. here's a look at the camera overlooking san francisco. sunny skies everywhere right now. 85 in oakland. low to mid 90s at redwood city. here's the view from the east bay coast camera. 92 at santa rosa. 91 in napa. 101 in fairfield. and mid to upper 90s at livermore and concord. i should mention that this heat is going to be with us for a few more days and even hotter tomorrow as a result, a heat advisory is in effect from now until 7:00 p.m. thursday for virtually all of the bay area. and an excessive heat warning for solano county. so not a bad idea to spend a lot

of time out in this heat. i'll give you more details how hot it's going to be the next two days. larry and dion? >> sounds good, spencer. thanks. hard to believe, but we've been sheltering in place in the bay area for 70 days. but some changes are starting to happen, at least at the state level. california took a big step toward reopening in-store retail shopping. the guidelines include physical distancing and face coverings and will apply to both malls and department stores. each store will have to provide a written plan and train employees and investigate cases of covid-19. reopening is subject to approval by county public health departments. it does not include personal services such as hair and nail salons and barbershops. the governor posted the announcement on twitter writi writing --

>> california also released guidelines for reopening churches. under the recommendations, houses of worship can resume in-person services, limited to 100 people. or 25% of the building's capacity, which ever is smaller. also, worshippers should wear masks, avoid sharing prayer books and skip the collection plate. the guidelines ask faith leaders to discontinue singing since it could spread the virus. this afternoon at city hall, a group of bay area black ministers called for churches to stay closed. >> we're still preaching and teaching, still trying to help our community. we will continue to do that until it is safe. church people, it is not safe yet! >> hundreds of other california churches have vowed to defy the current stay at home order for may 31st, which is pent cost, a major holiday for many

take a look. a fire erupted this afternoon at a land fill right off of i-880. it started just before 1:00 p.m. at the republic services island landfill on lickson landidixon . the smoke could be seen for miles. large piles of trash containing mostly paper products went up in flames. firefighters from fremont and san jose came in to assist and it was contain ed a about an hor

ago. no reports of injuries. >> that fire at pier 45 on saturday still under investigation. extensive damage inside the warehouse is threatening to disrupt the crab season. dozens of crash fishermen lost millions in gear in that fire. cornell bernard spoke to fishermen today about how they plan to recover. >> you wake up and realize that everything you did your whole life is gone. >> reporter: bob has been a crab fishermen for 46 years in san francisco, but now he's not sure what to do. >> i lost every piece of equipment, fishing equipment that i own, not just crab gear, in the fire. >> reporter: his expensive crab traps, mostly hand made, were stacked to the ceiling inside the warehouse, along with hundreds of others. here's what it looks like now. a total loss. after saturday's four-alarm fire ripped through the warehouse, this video gives us a look at the destruction.

the ceiling and walls destroyed. how bad is it, larry? >> it's bad. at least 30 families lost everything. >> reporter: larry colins is president of san francisco's community fishing association. he puts losses at $4 million to $5 million and could put the 2020 crab season starting in november in jeopardy. >> it's a terrible tragedy. we'll need support from the community and the port and everybody. >> reporter: the port of san francisco stepping up to help with relocation assistance. >> we are understand this is a devastating and tragic loss. we're also going to try to put our heads together and some up with creative solutions. >> reporter: some seafood companies were spared with only smoke damage. but crab fishermen are in a different boat. many say they had no fire insurance because they can't get it. a go fund me account now helping to raise $1 million to help the crab fleet recover. in san francisco, cornell bernard, "abc7 news."

fall may not get all the group activities that come with campus life, but they may not have to pay as much. the new york times is reporting the student loan interest rates will cost undergraduates about half of what they cost last year. this is great news. 2.25% verse more than 4.5%. the savings are eenormous. student s paying off loans in 1 years will save $1,000 for every $10,000 borrowed. the cruise industry will survive the pandemic, but the buffets may not. the industry says it will continue feeding its passengers plenty at each meal. but thhow food is displayed probably will. crui there is no agreement on what the new normal will be. the salad bar could undergo huge changes, where restaurants have been reopening, often the salad

a special memorial day tribute for the medical personnel on the frontlines of the covid-19 pandemic. a plane and two helicopters you see there from the california air national guard's 129th rescue wing circled the bay area today. we captured them here flying over eden medical center in castro valley. this was over the bay area, and another flight over the central coast and selinas valley. final preparations under way to launch u.s. astronaut into space from american soil in nearly a decade. nasa and spacex hope to usher in a new era of space travel with a

launch on wednesday. the first attempt by a private company to send astronauts into orbit. nasa veterans spent the weekend completing a final dress rehearsals. >> we have been in quarantine probably longer than any other space crew has ever been in the history of the space program. >> this is something we'll still be successful at and do it in the face of the pandemic. >> they will be tested one more time before their launch, a 19-hour trip to the international space station. speaking of elon musk and his partner, they have changed their baby's name. under california's constitution, names cannot include numbers. so yesterday, singer grimes said their boy has a new name. here we go. musk says the child's name is pronounced, i hope i get this right, x ash a-12. and it originally included the

despite the rising number of coronavirus cases in the u.s., crowds of people still flocked to memorial day hot spots. one of the most egregious examples, in ozarozarks, missou. this shows dozens of people without masks. it went viral over the weekend. also in florida, police had to

break up several crowds in daytona beach. roughly 200 people packed an area, appearing having to jumped on a police car that was trying to clear the streets. i totally get people frustrated and wanting to get out, spencer, but when i look at the scene in the ozarks, i could at least understand it if somebody was wearing a mask, but it's almost like we're done with this, it's over. i don't know. you explain it to me. >> i don't know what to say and sound like a plolite person. it's mindless and senseless. yes, we all want to get out and get back to our normal lives. don't we also want to live? i just don't get it. >> yeah. chris, you're younger. so maybe there's a demographic that feels they're invincible, that's often the case. i remember those days. but this is a whole different

element that we're dealing with here. and we're not hearing chris unfortunately. >> oh, well. i guess it's fixed. real quick, chris, in ten seconds. what were you going to say? >> a lot of people in scottsdale were partying like it was spring break is what i saw. >> all right. >> hey, talking about big groups like we talked about earlier, california has released new guidelines for reopening houses of worship. and there are some tough restrictions like no more than 100 people or 25% of the building's capacity. the guidance recommends no passing of the collection plate and limited singing, because of risk of covid-19 transmission. others say they'll stay closed until it's safe. i don't know, are you still able

to practice even though you're in a house of worship. that's the big question. larry, what do you think? >> i'm not the most religious guy on here, so i would say you probably could. i totally understand the feeling of wanting to go to a church or whatever religion you practice and meet, especially if you're dealing with some tough times. this is a frustrating situation for everybody. but we had one of the pastors on earlier saying it's not safe right now, at least in his opinion. so i lean towards science here, and i'm just hoping that we can get through this to a point where it's manageable. none of this is going away in a month or two months. it's going to take some time. spe spencer? >> most pastors i know also lean in that direction, larry. there are two service i attend regularly, and both pastors are doing facebook live on sunday for their congregation and

anyone who wants to tune in. in my belief system, if you are a person of faith and you pray, you can exercise all of that, those practices not in a building with a bunch of other people. so i salute the pastors who are doing online services. >> yeah. i'm going to have to agree with you there. it's all about the faith and having it within you. moving on now, here's a question, would you feel comfortable going to your favorite store for some in-person shopping? the state is allowing just that, with the final decision up to individual counties. now, it seems many of us aren't up for that yet, because a survey says just 35% of people nationwide would be comfortable vitz itting places like -- visiting bars and restaurants. there is a political divide, as well. 56% of republicans would be comfortable visiting local

businesses within a time frame, compared to just 20% of democrats. and i will say, before work today, i passed through a neighborhood where people were out and about running errands. one guy, this is disgusting, i saw with my own two eyes, blow a snot rocket into the middle of the street. i was horrified. so chris, how do you feel, would you want with everybody around you, doing whatever they happen to be doing, blowing snot rockets, want to go back to everyday life again? >> larry knows snot rockets, the first thing you think of is madison bumgarner. but the reason i would want to go out is because of small businesses and the things, the financial hardships, you want to patronize those businesses. but if snot rockets are flying around, people aren't being safe. but the reason to go out is help these businesses get back on

their feet because they're suffering hard times. >> people have to show more sense they the guy you're talking about. many students facing their senior year without going through graduation, but one school district found a way to let seniors and parents have their moment. it took several days to have students from two students walk across the stage with two parents in attendance. the graduation will be edited into a video and streamed online in june. every school is dealing with a different situation here. my daughter is about to graduate from uc santa barbara. they're talking about a virtual graduation. i would love for them to find a way, even if it's staggered, if it takes several days, whatever. so these kids can have a moment of walking and getting their diploma. whatever safety precautions you have to take is my thought. chris, what do you think? >> i was happy to hear about

♪music) abc 7 is exited to build a better bay area. today, we're focussing on a changing workplace. people may be able to keep their jobs but work remotely. nevada is expecting a wave of relocations. david louie joins us now. >> this is not the first such wave. 50,000 californians moved to nevada last year, along with others to texas and other more affordable states. with facebook indicating that long-term half of its workforce could be working remotely, that's a game changer. the once utopian tech campus is facing disruption, as the work
